      Yeah my livingroom is 4x5 metre , I stupidly bought a 3 seater and a chair, and I have a dining table in the corner, I wish I'd bought 2 2seaters or a went back to a sectional, I will once all the madness goes and I can get some money behind me again, I think a round table might be better aswell, but govy , where doors are placed, windows and power points, old houses, it's not that easy, especially when all you see are generous sized rooms decorated for ideas . Love this video, 👍

      Hi Julie,
      I love your videos, I am trying to decorate my living room dining room area and I find it very difficult. I have an open floor plan, the living room has a fireplace with big windows on each side and built in benches under the windows. Issue is that the oposite wall of the fireplace has a very large window and it s length is shorter than the wall where the fireplace with the windows are. It s very hard to center a couch on that wall. The 3 wall also has a big opening as it is access for a step down den like area
      Do you have any suggestions? It s very hard to explain I do not know if I managed to explain it well enough.

    You have quickly become my favorite designer to watch! While viewing each of the videos many questions that I have are answered or at least addressed; however, as you said, no two living rooms are the same which adds unique challenges. We built our home 14 years ago and I've struggled with furniture placement always. In addition to moving from a 1922 Chicago Bungalow style home to building an Arts and Crafts style ranch with a touch of an Asian theme if that makes sense, to adding a child to our family once construction had begun which would have called for a different layout. Additionally, my husband and I have each lost our mothers, then gaining additional pieces to our already mismatched version of decor. I love to mix things up with color, patterns, texture, but I also require a balance to feel peace with the arrangements. My husband and I have different ideas whereas I tend to like using furniture in nontraditional ways making an attempt to get multi-functional purpose from the same pieces. He thinks it is too crowded and that is where that art of space planning that you have is like magic. The exact same pieces could be used in different ways and have a whole different feel. One that is fresh and easily maneuvered to feel inviting.
    We designed our home together but ultimately he designed the layout and drew up the plans. As the architect for our home his idea of not wasting space utilizes all areas of the home in a functional way. As I feel this to be efficient it leaves me not knowing how to add a vignette or display sentimental items without looking cluttered. Ultimately, I believe like every couple we agree on the function of the space but both are unsure how to balance out the room so furniture feels cozy and inviting instead of crowded and confusing as to natural walkway patterns and such.
    So, to be specific, my living room is a huge challenge for me. There are stairways coming down into the room from two directions, a large window that takes up over half of one wall and the window is three deep across the bottom with one the middle window being double the height; therefore, I have no idea how to dress it. Currently, there are wood blinds that match the wood casings on the bottom three. All of the wood in our home is stained which I feel requires the furniture to be painted or a different material than wood so it does not look redundant. The top window is not dressed which would be okay but the sun comes in from that side of the house in the afternoon and it is fading my leather couch and is just too bright. Also, there is a stone fireplace that should be the focal point in my opinion, but adjacent to it is the large undressed window that is beautiful but undone. Our home has somewhat of an open floor plan so yeah that is tough as well. It may have been easier and much more brief if I had just sent a few pictures. Ha!
    I did purchase a 11x14 banded jute rug that landed in the living room. It was purchased for my kitchen but was too big when placed underneath my farm table so I shifted it to the living room which is larger and has taller ceilings. The wall height is 13 ft. and walls are painted a deep gold which we plan to paint a deeper color that will give that room the pop that it needs. The color of the jute rug almost blends with the wall color as opposed to having a contrast but I feel a smaller rug atop the jute rug could designate the focus area. Any suggestions that you provide for direction would be much appreciated!!! I have moved some of the same pieces from room to room in this home for almost 15 years! After a recent spinal fusion, it is time to settle on a fresh layout and enjoy it!:)

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 года назад

      Thank you for sharing your story 💗 I would suggest motorized shades for the tall windows, layered with nice drapery panels. If you need to to access that uppermost window to block out harsh light, this is a functional and convenient method. As far as layering rugs, go for it. Just be wary of making the space seem smaller. If you want more contrast from rug to wall, try large statement art pieces in canvas or a large mat- the colors will help draw more attention to the art vs. wall color. Hope that helps!

      Everything facing tv unconsciously depicts a life that is not connecting with people. It's like a living room inside the movie theater. You ignore your life to pay attention to a fantasy.
      If we talk to people, we exchange ideas, grow. Most high achievers don't waste their precious time on this earth with brainwashing, fake news, a drug enducing trance and escapism like tv that really just want to take your money with commercials.

    I love this channel ❤️ it’s so chill. SO I have a huge tv 80. Because I’m a big movie nerd. And I have a trick of my own. My living room is also my movie room. I’ve used basically 3 of your layouts because bi get bored with furniture and all 3 worked great. But that huge tv is hard to hide. UNLESS 😜. The wall behind the tv is BLACK. I have mine on a large brick wall. I painted black. I used RUSTOLEUM spray paint. Yes. Spray paint. Because it gives the bricks a combination of satin and Matt. And the grout completely Matt. The brick has so much dimension unlike other brick walls I’ve seen that were primed first. My method allows the paint to collect more and less on the different surfaces. Grout is much more pourous. And the tv disappears into the black. This could be done with TILE. Burnt black WOOD panels. Anything black behind the tv. Then I use APPLE TVS Ariel screen savers. They are a talking point of thier own. It’s moving art. So beautiful. I also hung a swing chair with black chain. to distract a tiny bit from the fireplace/tv focal wall. I wish I could send pics here.

    When placing a sectional in a small living room, do you recommend one side on the long wall opposite the focal point and the other side ... floating in space, against the other wall so it's pushed into the corner, or does it depend?

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 года назад +1

      Exactly- main side facing the focal point, return side facing the view or entry to the room if possible. The space will feel more open this way Sonya. Just think about your design intent and play around with the possibilities 👍🏻☺️

    Hi Julie, your videos are very informative. Regarding my livingroom space, I feel I have no choice but to put the sofas against the walls. We have an L shape open space with a wood burning stove in one corner opposite the kitchen and a huge staircase that divides the front entrance hallway and livingroom. It's a challenge!!😢

    • @JulieKhuu

      You may anchor the largest sofa against a wall, but don’t be afraid to float smaller seating in space to create zones. If you can’t achieve this, then the scale of your pieces are too big for the space. Check out my video on scale and proportion for more tips Rita!

    Hi Julie, just stumbled across your channel & I am so glad! Slowly de-cluttering & organising my house & also finishing touches on styling, so your wisdom is just the thing. Living in the UK the rooms are teeny tiny! As you come in the door to my lounge you face the focal point: a gas fire with a faux rough marble surround, sort of classic contemporary with slight art deco hint. On the left is the longest wall against which is the small sofa in black leather (boxy Ikea model). Between that & the wall where the fireplace is an old antique steamer trunk, as a side table with storage. I have 2 nesting clear glass side tables as the coffee table to give illusion of space & to provide flexibility - easy to move out of the way for exercise vids or whatever! To the right is a short wall where I have a cozy armchair & side table with classic contemporary glass table lamp. The other wall is an awkward bay window. Currently I have a round black leather ottoman/footstool parked there for seating, footrest, or work surface. To the right of the fireplace in the corner is the tv on a corner unit. I am really pleased with the layout. I may get another casual chair which can be brought in to complete a conversation group or be taken to the snug/office/sunroom.
    Thank you for sharing design principles & validating my gut instinct. I can’t wait to learn more! 💝

    Hi Julie, Love your videos. Not sure how to place furniture in room.
    I have a sitting room which I would like to create as a talking room with family and friends. I have a plum velvet 3 seater couch, 2 x single chairs and an upright piano. The room is long with a bay window at one end (4 windows) and a fireplace in the middle of the room with 2 windows on either side. There is a double french door opening into the room facing the fireplace and a side door (left hand side of the room) opening into the study room). The longest wall is the one beside the french door on the right hand side. The doors are usually closed as we have heating only downstairs. The French doors open into the front entrance which shows off a wooden staircase. The style of house is Victorian on the outside and French provincial (mostly classical and traditional) on the inside. We are working on a renovation at moment and are nearly ready to put our furniture back. Any tips would be much appreciated. Laura

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 года назад

      Thank you for watching Laura! I would place the single chairs in the bay window with a side table in between. Flank the large sofa facing the fireplace and try additional accent chairs facing each other perpendicular to the sofa. If you have room, maybe even a low daybed in front of the fireplace to create your seating group. Watch my awkward space series, the long and narrow spaces video will help guide you 👍🏻☺️

    Hi there, Julie and followers - I am quite new to your channel, but am loving, learning and very much enjoying your videos. I have, what has become the bane of my existence, a corner fireplace in a very long living room that is open to the kitchen and dining area. I have spent so much time & energy trying to come up with a suitable arrangement, but have not found it. Large, low windows and the need (?) for a television complicate the issue. Do you have a video that speaks to this issue? I simply want to check this off my list once and for all! Thank you. Take good care.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 года назад

      Hi Audrey, this seems to be a common issue with a corner fireplace. So much so that I am addressing it soon in a video. But for now, try using the adjacent wall to place a low console with the TV above it. Even if it blocks the window. You can still access it from behind

    Yes, I feel like I have an awkward space. The room is closed off you have to enter through a door. From the door looking into the living room on the left (far corner) is a bay window (no built in bench/storage, but a floor heater right under the center window). From the door looking to the right (far corner ) is a gas fire place. The bay window and fire place are across from each other .

    I hope you still get notified about comments that are added to older videos! I have been struggling for years with finding a successful living room layout. The issue is that there are 4 entrances or exits to/from the living room - 1) the front door on east wall, 2) a stairway going downstairs and hallway (stairs and hall are side by side with only a railing between - so I'm counting those as one) along north wall, 3) a large opening into kitchen on the west side 4) a large opening into dining room also on west wall (the kitchen and dining room are connected). This leaves only one solid wall (south wall) and it contains the fireplace right in the middle. I know it can be done, I just do not know how to do it! Help!

    Thanks for sharing. New to your channel and catching up on videos.
    I have a very large odd great room, dining, sitting room combo. It's like an L or 1 corner of a cube where the corn is 2 stories and the sides are 9 foot. It's even more exciting with a sliding glass door on 1 end, 2 large windows (1 on each floor of the great room), the dining room connected to the kitchen by 2 bar height counters divided by a walk way/opening, and a small column that creates a walkway into each side of the L.
    Loads of fun! Please advise. Thank you!

      @@JulieKhuu Thank you for responding. I was responding to your video with my dilemma. I'm always rearranging to fin he best layout. Sadly, the architects put things in crazy places. Even light fixtures aren't centrally placed. I will have to gather pictures to show you how crazy it is.

    Thx Julie! So I love your style and ideas! I have two issues- really, with styling my furniture. We have a pretty good space for our family room which we use for gathering a lot , BUT as far as furniture, we have 2 newer brown leather “matchy” recliner sofas and 2 of the same matchy recliner chairs that we got from a big box store; also our house is mid-80’s so we have the vaulted ceilings with those weird cutouts which start above the doorways and stretches to the ceiling!! I really love my house and am inspired by your channel to make it better😊

      Sounds like you need to more color and contrasting textures to break up all the brown. Check out my color palettes video for more inspiration NanaZ!

    Julie I need your help! My mom and dad's living room is driving me crazy with the layout! The main entry door is in the middle of the room and the space is a rectangle with a fireplace in the center of one of the walls. I've tried so many angles and I need help. Is there a program i can use to see a couple of layout options, any recommendations? please help! Love your work, your just simply amazing 💕

      Thank you for watching Daisy! Check out the long and narrow room episode in the awkward space series- sounds just like your condition that I cover. I work in autocad, but Plan your room, roomstyler, Floorplanner, 3Dream, Sketchup are all free programs. Good luck!

    How would you arrange a living room with windows on the longest wall, a fireplace across from that, and a double door opening on the other two ends. One end comes from the foyer, and the other door opening goes into the dining room . The room is rectangle shape. Thank you and love all the tips in your video!!

      Subtract 36”-42” away from the passages for egress, back the longest sofa up in front of the windows (give it breathing room) across from the fireplace and float the rest of the seating in space to create a conversation area. Watch my video on long and narrow rooms in the awkward space series for more tips and inspiration!

    The main problem I encounter when I try to move furniture away from the wall is the electrical cords from lamps, etc., have to run from the wall to the tables. It's the worst.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 года назад +1

      I hear ya, keep those electrical items on side tables close to the walls, but the remaining chairs you can float in the space. I have to design floor outlets for my client’s homes for this very reason!

    I love all of these, but I have a very unique living room. My house was designed for every wall to have a purpose. I have one wall with a built in bookshelf and tv stand. Another wall has our fire place in between. The last two walls one has our Fourier and front door and the last wall has the doorways to our kitchen and also dining room. So my furniture has to stay in one place. I am really thinking of a sectional, but still don’t know.

      Your seating should optimally float in space and face the TV and fireplace to enjoy both focal points. A sectional seems to fit the bill 👍🏻

    I'd love for you to share some tips on furniture placement in regards to feung shui , I had understood a sofa should be on a solid wall?, not under window wall because that is a vulnerable position? Thank you, enjoy your style and clarity.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 года назад

      Yes, that is the most auspicious wall for a sofa, but sometimes you have no choice and have to prioritize the intent. Love your idea, thank you!

      Use the wall next to it to create a focal point and position the main sofa in front of that

    I love your tips so much 😭 I consider myself pretty good at arranging a room. But my boyfriends new house has such an awkwardly large living room that flows into the kitchen and dining room. I like your idea of using a couch as a room divider!! I might have to try that.

    • @JulieKhuu

      Yes, furniture as spatial dividers is the way to go!
