Julie, I’ve been watching your videos for years and I just wanted to tell you that you have really grown and you continually put out better and better content… this was another great video :-) thank you for all of your hard work! Appreciate you!
I truly enjoyed this video ! Very informative and soooo helpful. Saving this video and passing it along to my children. 5 sofas in 2000 SF home …that is amazing! This video is like a good lesson in a design lecture room that I can rewatch again and pause and let the info soak in my brain before I go sofa shopping. Thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 . GREAT content !!
I have 2 sofas , 1 in the living room, one in my family room, but now I want to reevaluate for the house we are building. You gave me a lot to think about. Thanks!
This is by far one of my most needed videos you’ve made this year!! I would love a mood board video from you, with today’s paint colors you love and you could use some of these sofa choices included from this video! Design us some rooms (with painted built-ins)😊!!! ❤❤❤ please!!! We need help before the holidays!!
Art history was one of my favorite deep dives in design school. I love this aspect because it shows how trends cycle around from centuries past and all across the globe 😍
Hi Julie! Measure measure measure! The lady from Ethan Allen who sold me my sofa and sectional came to my house from Manhattan to measure bc the sectional cost a fortune! She needed to make sure it would fit. It was expensive I still have it ! It’s 24 years old! Great piece and held up well. All cotton Italian tapestry upholstery from Robert Allen. I covered the body with plastic bc I had cats. Some of the cushions need to be re upholstered but it’s a great piece. The fill never sags or wears out. It’s amazing. Made in america! Probably North Carolina. I just know the factory workers put a lot of hard work matching the patterns and making the seams tight. You get what you pay for. Sofas can last a long time if you buy quality. If it’s the biggest piece in the room spend the most on that. I like patterns on my sectionals bc they hide accidents. My sofa is a small maybe 72” curved camel colored chenille with very subtle hints of orange and green dots. It fits the room bc the room is small. But it’s very cozy and the arms are high enough so that you can sit against them and lounge with your feet up and your lap top and work away. Like your camelback sofa. My kids love to sit on that sofa. I like second hand but reupholstering is very expensive. I’ve had it done but not often. I remember when you did the garage conversion. It looks terrific! 🥰🥰Margaret
Great vlog Julie. We have a sectional in our front snug movie room and a more formal sofa in our back lounge. The sofa was custom made as we had looked at many designs and struggled to find one that was comfortable. Some modern sofas have low backs and are not that comfortable. We found one whilst on holiday in California and got the store to measure the back, height, depth etc. once home in the UK we had a local company make one exactly to that spec. Definitely worth the money.
Brilliant! You’re thinking like a designer for sure Samta! 🙌🏻 I keep a tape measure in my purse. You never know when inspiration will strike and you want to custom make an exact copy of something you saw/ can’t bring home/ can’t afford lol 😆
I currently have a big sectional but am passing it on to my daughters little family. I want a traditional sofa and 2 chairs. We are retired and found that the sectional was extremely difficult for us to unhook, move and rehook together again. Much easier to just move a chair.
@@JulieKhuu I am busy redesigning my living room and am in the market for a sectional. I realize now that I can also have a couch instead of a sectional as well because I don't host often. I'm working my way through your links. Love your channel. Your advice is very practical. I don't leave the house without my measuring tape now when I go to furniture stores. THANK YOU 🥰
This was very well thought out! Wow Julie ! Thank you! I definitely am buying a sofa and couch this year. It’s well overdue 😂 Our new cat has torn up our sofa we’ve had for years lol but oh my goodness the inspiration I got from this video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’ve got my notebook out and getting it done! Love your office space 😍 Dis you paint the walls or is that wallpaper? BTW you look gorgeous! I love your hair 👌🏼
Great video Julie. Ironically I got one of my couches from the Ikea 'as is' section. The couch still holds up well. I got the Kivik and put furniture legs on it to give it some height.
Great video! I love sofas and chaises, would put them everywhere if I could. I recently put a " floor sofa" in a bedroom I use for an offce and it is a game changer. I'd been searching for just the right murphy bed option but this sofa fits all my needs for now since it can fold out for sleeping and the curved shape is a real design focal point.
I regret my Navy Leather reclining loveseat in my family room ...I was enamored of the reclining function...& the gently sloped arms would permit a sleep-over if need be. But alas the need never arose & I don't really use the reclining function. Wish I had a little different look... though I still love the Navy Leather. Too much trouble to make a change at this time. That's my tale of woe!
Thanks so much for all of your videos, julie. I've learned so much from you. I watch you every week. I was wondering if you can do a video on hanging art or mirrors above sofas and consoles? Is there a "standard" for that? Or you just eyeball the distance?
I recently went sectional shopping and noticed there were more reclining sectional pieces that actually looked modern and did not compromise the style. What is your opinion on reclining sectionals?
"Nobody says that you have to sit on the sofa. The sofa can be there simply because you love looking at it and the beauty of the sofa makes you happy". Thanks for these words of wisdom!
Yes! I had a natural disaster that forced me to renovate and I may relocate in the near future. The bland walls that will help me sell made me sad, a purple velvet sectional brought life back to the space. I scored a stainless steel gridiron coffee table and Oriental rug that were gently used and classic that I will likely keep forever. Very eclectic and not for most, who effing cares?! Thanks, Julie
One thing to consider: sectional sofas, people sont sit in the corner. And tou are stuck with that shape. A 3 plus 2 will often fit in same space and people are not touching knees together andpeollemore people but probably higher cost as buying teo sofas instead of a corner
In case study 1, I'm surprised you chose a sectional since it divides the living room from the other space making for an annoying walk around the sectional edges. Two sofas would allow for easier flow between rooms.
I am mentioning you on my vlog premiere tomorrow on my YT channel. You are one of my fave interior designer youtubers aside from Nick Lewis and you guys inspired me to venture into a build and sell business. Hopefull soon! 😃🙏🏼🥰
Thanks for the info!! But I still don’t exactly know what I want :(. I currently have a sectional but would also like 2 sofas (in a L shape). However, there’s this one piece of wall that will not allow for 36” clearance on a small portion of a sofa. Any advice? 😊
So I have a 10x13 apartment with only one wall - the other two side walls have a door on one side and a sliding door on the other side and the fourth side is actually open as it’s a great room so the kitchen counter separates the living room from the kitchen so if I so t want a tv I can place the couch in front of the kitchen island or place it up against the back wall or if I get a small L shape I can place near the sliding door … if I want a tv there is only one way to place the sofa/sectional and that’s in front of the island. … I’m screwed.
Where can I find a high-quality sectional like the model that Restauration hardware sells? I have heard that they sectional does not hold the shape and you have to fluff every time someone gets up.
@@JulieKhuu I couldn't resist!!! (And it's a sort of inferred joke that isn't blatantly partisan....and is totally relevant to couches!!!) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

you dont actually have to buy all of the pieces of the range you can buy 2 one seaters and a curve 1 seater for the middle you can buy them separately piece by piece which is great for small spaces
I have the CB2 Gwyneth boucle loveseat in my small apartment … I need to flexible with layout or if I move (but I love my apartment so I don’t want to ever move lol), so it works perfectly in my space. My boyfriend has a gigantic dark brown leather sectional with two recliners, a console (for storage?!) and two cupholders ALL BUILT INTO IT… this thing looks like it belongs in a spaceship suburban and not in a living room. I hate that thing. I once cried to him about it saying how as much as I want us to eventually move in together, I can’t live with him if he is expecting to bring that thing. I can’t live with that sectional. He bought it in probably 2007 and it was one of his first bigger purchases and he’s so attached to it… And it doesn’t even sit in a corner nicely at all because it’s more like an acute angle and not a right angle… I seriously hate it so much. And the 2 recliners are so hard to put down once you are reclined so I can’t ever get up like a normal human… AND those recliners make it SO impossible for a normal coffee table so don’t even get me started on his coffee table situation!!!
The title of the video is misleading, thank you for a great video on the history, what to look out for and how to shop, but I clicked on this video for sofa brands, I know I have a small space and how to fit the sectional in, given the title, "Seating Showdown", I was under the impression you were going to help show me sofa options for small spaces, which you did not.

Is it acceptable to mix different leather colors. I want to add light leather accent chairs to my living room, but I have a dark couch and loveseat?
