Kai... If you ever think that " ooo everybody has done the review" please still make it.. because i only listen to a man with a chinese body but a british voice opinion.
I feel like this is like when they released the Canon 6D, they simply made a camera for people who want a brand new full frame camera that does the job just fine. Only this time it's mirrorless. The 6D was never a breakthrough camera but it was a great affordable way to get that sweet taste of full frame. I feel like I will be seeing lots of Canon EOS RP owners in the future!
I think the RP is for Canon Rebel owners who want to go full frame mirrorless and don’t want to spend too much on lenses or on switching systems. That’s all it’s meant for, and Canon knows it’ll make plenty of money just from this user base alone. Anybody who complains about the camera is obviously not who Canon is targeting.
Acierto, you nailed it! As simple as such! You made all the camera experts look dummy with complex unnecessary conclusions. I will get y RP after your very clever point of view. Thanks, bro.
Canon: "We'll release a camera just for the population of ppl who have the Rebel who happen to want to try a full frame camera! That'll sell like hot cakes!!"
I have one, got it for still photos and it's actually great for what I use it for. But this is THE INTERNET so we have to get angry about literally everything.
So I am upgrading from a PowerShot point and shoot camera to a DSLR. I was converted to the Canon 80D, but someone told me to check out the new EOS RP. I am into Architecture but do small wedding/graduation ceremonies. I also love taking it hiking to do landscape, wildlife, and macro photography. Which camera would you recommend? Which is more sustainable with a low budget?
Not a canon fan, but the 80d is a far more superior and hard core camera compared to the eos rp, the only thing the eos rp has on the 80d is the full frame sensor, and being that it's the 6d mk2 sensor it's not even much of an advantage. The 80d is canon's upper midrange crop sensor and is an absolute beast for photography and video, save for the lack of 4k, it has great 1080p and video af, it's quite hard to go wrong with the 80d
Kai is one of the few RUclips reviewers who truly understand the purpose of the eos rp, a photo camera that is decent enough for the casual photographer who doesn't expect much at a lower price point
@@limyohwan to enthusiasts, yes, Fuji is undoubtedly provides better value from many if not all perspective. But from Canon's marketing standpoint, for a person with just the basic understanding of cameras, Canon is one of the more reputable camera companies, combine that with low price + full frame, it is a no brainer for the average Joe out there Not disagreeing with your statement but at the end of the day, Canon is still a company operating a business, unfortunately.
@@danieldavid891 It's the end times, man. Nothing is sacred, even those who design and sell shrubberies are under considerable economic stress during this period in history.
I think that most people that will buy this camera will not buy L lenses. They will use the included EF adapter and buy less expensive EF zooms, which will be just fine for most people.
Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of reviewers miss that point - including Kai (who I love and have followed for years), who should know better. At that price point, I suspect most buyers will grab the body and an adapter and shoot with their existing range of EF and EF-S lenses. And most of them won't give a crap about it's video features (or lack thereof). This isn't marketed at the folks considering buying a Sony or a Fuji, it's Canon keeping folks in it's orbit. That's a questionable strategy, granted, but it's a legitimate one.
@moo I'm not sure how that question comes from my statement... The EOS RP doesn't seem to be aimed at folks who already have full frame Canon DSLR (who'd probably buy the EOS R anyhow). The EOS RP is a budget(ish) camera aimed at people moving up from APS-C (the Rebel series or possibly a "sidegrade" from the 80D or 7D) to full frame or who want to move into mirrorless. It strikes me that it's possible you don't think that people who don't own a full frame don't have EF mount lenses... I can't speak all Canon owners, but I do and I know people who do. EF doesn't mean L glass, there's non-L EF lenses and a ton of 3rd party lenses that use the EF mount.
There are literally two options for cheaper if you buy new: The a7 at $800, and a7ii at $1,000. 6 and 4 year old cameras respectively. For $1,300, you get the RP and the EF adapter allowing you to use all your legacy glass. Sure, it's not the best camera in the world, but it's also not as bad as people think.
What's the point of the RP you ask? For me it is to use my EF lenses mirrorlessly, at the lowest ticket price. Sony A7II + Metabones or MC-11 is more expensive.
I'm moving house. Afterwards I will reward myself with the RP. I have mirrorless cameras before, most recently the Leica D-Lux (Typ 109). EVF plus Exposure Compensation Dial gives me the exposure I want everytime...before I even press the shutter. Can't go back to DSLRs now!
Exactly my thoughts. I looked at the Sony options because of all the praises for the 7iii but when the body alone is nearly 1000€ more expensive and Sony lenses cost up to three times more for the same specs then I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Especially considering many people might already have a EF lense and the eos RP is able to take those without a problem
I had a 6D m2. I swapped it for the RP + a 35mm lens. I like shooting astrophotographs and otherwise daily/nightly "all-rounder" shots, meaning I prefer full-frame, and like to have the camera with me as a comfortable afterthought - there when I need it, uncumbersome when I don't. After moving from my 6D to the M50 for weight considerations, I was horrified by the results of that crop sensor. What I'm looking for: 1) reasonably lightweight 2) definitely full-frame 3) definitely fully articulating viewfinder (I used the 6D VF in every possible angle, all the time) RP was the only one on the market I could find that fit those needs. I fell in love with a few Sonys, but their viewfinders only slid out one way, and worried me. I was even willing to pay more than I had for the 6D, but I simply couldn't find another camera that had those three features. When I do, I'll happily sell the RP without a second thought :)
“Sony has lenses. Lots and lots of lenses.” - Been an og sony user since the 1st SLT alphas and I never thought I’d hear those words spoken.😂 All the criticism back then to sony was, “there are no lenses”.
This review should be revisited. Body alone is $999 and you can get the RF 24-240 lens kit, for only about $1,500. You get a fairly decent camera, with a great lens that may be, the only lens you'll ever need for this camera.
I think a lot of people who get this camera will end up being really happy with it. It does offer s lot for the price, and I’m hopefully that some firmware updates could fix some of the quirks. That being said, I’m very excited to see the rumored high end R series camera, and I’m hopeful that the RP will lower the price of the 6D II (I’d love to get a second one of those)!
As somebody who would LOVE Canon to release a 4K60fps no crop camera, I have to say that this is a very good deal if you're trying to get into the full frame market. It's NOT meant for video but I'm sure Canon is planning something like that.
Yes it is what it is, and it ticks all the boxes for my need: - full frame mirrorless - good and not expensive 35mm - flipout screen + touch screen - basic video options - usb charging - good grip + comfortable to hold Though, i would have prefer a bigger battery
I wouldn't even mind the hobbled video features if they weren't hobbled to such an extreme - no 24fps at 1080p? No 30fps in 4k? It's just so blatantly artificial feature omission for the sake of product differentiation. Canon blew it with the EOS R - they made a sub-par effort that doesn't stack up to the competition, and so their entire mirrorless lineup going forward has to fall in line with that disappointing standard. I foolishly got excited for the RP before its official announcement. Now I'll probably end up spending a bit more and buying myself a Sony A7r ii and beginning my transition away from Canon.
Yes you are right we shouldn’t have expected much since the R was a rather disappointment. But we aren’t asking for features that aren’t already in their older cameras. My 70D shoots 24p at 1080. That’s not hard to do. That’s what I’m upset about. I don’t care about 4K nor 120p. It’s just silly man.
I shoot 70D and am moving to RP. It is full frame and mirrorless while being smaller that my 70D. Uses my EF and EF-S lenses plus all the new R lenses. Super for travel. Super for birding with EF-R adapter. Have not shot any video since 1984.
@@donh4907 well of course for you that's an upgrade. You're moving from a camera released in 2013 to a camera built for ~2016. This camera is perfect for people who have low expectations and aren't used to the technology/features released in the past couple of years.
It is actually a good camera and good value for money despite the negative criticism. Anyone who has handled and used the camera will appreciate its goodness.
Coming from an 80D which I always found too heavy for a daily shooter (when not expecting to go out to shoot, I mean, just keeping a camera in my bag) I love the RP. Reduced size and weight makes it VERY worthwhile. Not to mention the upgrade from APS-C to FF, there's a big difference in lens quality as a whole. I got my first L lens because of this camera, and now that I'm in the FF game I'll continue to get nicer glass. I know I'll eventually (in 2-4 years) I'll get another FF camera, not an APS-C. I think this camera body is great, and that's coming from a high level enthusiast level body.
@@KentSpain85 I found a really cheap camera secondhand and it was too irrestible not to get it. I was blown away by it. I was lcuky to have invested in some L lenses and Sigma Art glass and I was very impressed with it. I was coming from an M50 and the RP was like a bigger version of the M50. Despite going up a bit in size, it was no big deal. I found it better to carry than my 77D and 700D. They were awesome but too big and drew attention. It is a fabulous camera and many people made the mistake of judging it by the cover [specs] including some who wrote it off withour even touching it. I think the people who benefitted were a lot of people like you and me who made their first foray into full frame cameras and got the RP. All the business abourt dual cards and the likes were not an issue. I know not to trust too many reviews from people who don't relly use the cameras or don't shoot anything. I have had mine for over 7 months now and I don't see myself upgrading in a hurry. The R6 looks great and the price is OK but I have no need to abandon the RP I am still loving it. You can't beat the price. I am on the lookout for a second to use as a backup. You can't beat this camera for the price and value for money. Enjoy it mate.
Would this be a good camera for someone like me who has been taking mostly still photos with a Canon 70D since its release and is looking to move up to a full frame sensor but lighter camera to again, mostly use for low action stills? I would probably just get the body and adapter and use with my current EF lenses.
Keith Stansell Yes, it would be good for that. You can use your existing EF lenses with the EF adapter and they will work just like on the 70D. Way too much huffing and puffing from youtubers but the camera has good ergonomics, good AF and the fully articulated touch screen is also great - but you know that from your 70D.
Nah, go with the fuji xt 30 or if you want full frame, you can have an A7 mk2 for the same prize as the eos rp and it is a lot better for stills (better focus and dinamic range) and also does 4k and frreat video 😀
If you want to stay in the canon ecosystem and you want to stay in with EF lenses, honestly just buy a used 5D III. You can get one for the same price and the sensor is better than this dynamic range wise. Though it will be slightly behind in AF. Or save a bit and go with an EOS R or 5D IV. But do not go with a 6D II. Its a horrid camera even for stills. The RP might be ok, but id say this is more of a first time camera than an upgrade camera. Its dynamic range is pretty bad and at that point not much of an upgrade. If you really want to upgrade and go full frame, its honestly worth saving a little bit and spending a little bit more for something that will last you longer. The RP is a camera you can grow out of fairly quick.
@@touyube481 I know that. Honestly I don't recommend this camera at all to any hybrid shooters. As a stills camera, its not much better than a cheaper APSC camera, so at that point its not much competition with anything else in its price range. Thats why I said it might be ok, but definitely don't recommend it.
I think the RP is for those who own a 5D Mark IV or a 1DX Mark II, and lust over the RF lenses, so it's basically a rear lens cover that one can use to test the lenses during the wait of release of the "pro Canon Mirrorless body" Or a RF -Z/ RF-FE adapter
@@bentonbrightwell8953 I think having a longer flange distance is what makes enough room for an adapter to happen, I admit that Z-RF and FE-RF will not happen with today's knowledge of physics (or at least mine)
@@kyokuten No, a shorter flange distance is what allows for them to happen, because the adapter simply adds length back. You can not go the other way though and take away length. That's the reason we have DSLR to mirrorless adapters but not mirrorless to DSLR adapters. Nikon has the shortest flange distance of the big three and thus the advantage here.
Damn, Kai really changed my mind about this camera. I'm a sony shooter and I have been defending this camera for the last week. While I still stand by my statement that this camera is definitely made for people looking to upgrade from either their APS-c sensor camera or their old full frame canon. he makes a very valid point. The A7ii & A7Rii are really good value right now and the specs knock this out of the park. However, it is worth noting that switch systems (especially if you have a lot of lenses, is a major pain in the ass). This camera isn't for everyone but it certainly will sell to some. Lastly Kai made a great point, people's expectations for a 1300 dollar camera is absolutely insane! its a 1300 dollar full-frame FROM CANON!
this is $1300 at launch. The A7ii was $2000 (? thereabout) at launch. What will this be in 2 years? And the next "entry-level" FF generation? Not to mention the cost of lenses if you go with Sony. Using this with EF lenses makes for the most economical mirrorless FF alternative on the market.
October 2022. I sold my Fuji XT3 and for the same money ($1300 total) I got this week my new RP with the “lowly” kit zoom which happens to take amazing macro shots, exactly for what I needed it. Full frame, small, compact, accesible and with awesome Canon colors. Don't let the specs fool you, this camera with a nice lens will take awesome images.
Great video Kai, I'm tired of everyone complaining about it. I reminded myself who this camera was for when I thought back to what camera I started out shooting video with.
I suppose so but like he said, I'd get a smaller sensor camera with better features like the Sony A6500/400. That would get you further in most respects than having a 'full frame'.
"I'm tired of everyone complaining...." Why do you care what other people think? Get it if you think it's a good value. I'll wait for a non-crippled version.
If they'd just put in a better sensor, I wouldn't really have any complaints given the price, and how small it is. I mean, I don't know, just stick in the 5D Mark IV's sensor, like the R has. It doesn't matter if it's slow and "only" does 5fps, or if it takes longer to autofocus. It's not a sports body. Even a slow camera that takes a full second to autofocus can still give you fantastic portrait and landscape shots.
@@mavfan1 It's not about what people think. It's been a solid 2 weeks of rants on every channel now and yes, it's getting pretty boring, time to move on.
The best camera is the one you have. I sometimes deliberately shoot with "lesser kit" to prove to students I teach that its the photographer more than the kit.
@@noseyparker6622 i printed two images to A0, one on a canin 750D with Canon kit lens one on a Sony Nex 7 with a Pentax K fit 50mm. I asked the class what I used and they said 5d MKiv as because I have access to one it was inconceivable that I wouldn't use it. Even at A0 none (and there were somw very fine photogs there) thought it could be crop. Or old. Or mid range.
What do you guys recommend, RP or EOS M6mii? I mostly care about taking pictures. I do care about the amount of detail and I wanna be able to crop. I will use mostly the kit lenses and shoot jpegs only. Do those 7 extra megapixels really make a difference when it comes to detail that can be seen on a 15 inch laptop screen? Or should I forget Canon and get Sony a6100/6400?
I have both. EOS RP will get you into the RF line, which has a long life as far as things go. $600 refurb on Canon store rn. Not that much larger than M6ii. I bought an M6ii on a steal of a price, and it is HANDY, but I forgot how light and clever the RP is. RP is now my everyday carry and R is my “serious” gear with battery grip for art walks.
Kai - very nice video. BUT, one thing you forgot to mention. The Canon RP is the smallest, autofocus, full-frame, interchangeable lens camera (had to include lots of caveats to cover Leica M). The size is what led me to order the camera. Mirrorless is supposed to be about reduced size - a.k.a. the original Panasonic G1. But now they are just getting too big. The new Panasonic S1R looks like an incredible camera in many, many ways. But for me, it is just too large.
Great video. The RP is my first full frame (well 2nd actually after I realized the used Sony a7R II I got had a bad sensor). I don’t do video, and I am happy with it. Yes the DR isn’t great but there’s workarounds like exposure bracketing and in camera HDR. I’d like to add that one of its biggest bonuses for me and landscape and macro work is focus bracketing. It’s the first Canon to feature it and it works amazingly well. It’s a huge time saver for me and my macro studio work and it‘s great for landscapes. Not to mention the RP does have a nice touchscreen and the a7 II doesn’t. I personally love the RP. I got the grip and EF adapter for free too which is a huge money saver. If you’re like me and were rockin a Rebel T4i and had some L lenses or just a nice Canon lens collection, go for it.. the benefits of mirrorless are amazing. Just seeing the exposure before the shot is awesome. Manual focusing is a breeze too.
Although the camera is "cheap", I don't see it as a good fit for most beginners considering the lenses and lackluster continuous shooting performance. Beginners would probably be much better off with something like a Sony A6400 or Canon EOS M50. There probably are a good deal of people with APS-C cameras wanting to get into FF to try it out that have EF/EF-S glass. I went from Pentax APS-C to Nikon for the cheapest FF back when the D600 was released. The RP is a similar attempt at what the D600 was, though I'd say the D600 had more "pro" features at the time outside of the weak AF system, though it did technically cost more it was the cheapest FF at the time. I like the body design of the RP and at some point I'm hoping to try one out. That grip extender is a great idea.
The lenses? thats the big bonus here for the RP. the EF adapter comes in FOR FREE. you can add all EF lenses ever made on it with great AF. just get the RP and a 24mm f2.8 pancake and a 50mm f1.8 (each lens around 100$). and you have a great light fullframe setup already!
You have to look on the price for the system. Who buys just a body? With all the great Canon AF lenses availible from the past, the RP is brilliant. I mean, look at what is on ebay. A huge amount of cheap AF FF lenses that will work on the RP.
@@weizenobstmusli8232 Good point. I was a Canon user, however, this new Canon mirror-less line made me switch to Fujifilm. Love their cameras and their way more affordable glass. The images I'm getting for pics and video are so good.
It's the camera made for canon Reflex users... like 2nd-3rd body and try the mirrorless technology. With an adapter they can use all the Canon lenses without strange mix up with other brands. It make sense for canon users, maybe it's not super attractive for the rest of the world.
Lok is right. The key to this camera is look at the price and size. It does not have a bunch of features but it is low priced. Just to be clear Ken Rockwell is a good guy. He publishes a detailed useful blog on his own with details about camera gear and using cameras. Very useful suggested settings. A huge archive of useful information. I use it as a reference guide almost every day. Of course he wants to make money and promotes using his site for links and would like it if you sent him a few bucks now and then. But for the most part his opinions are very accurate with a few obvious exceptions. When I was having some problems trying to decide what camera to buy he had me call him and talked to me for 30 minutes. What have you ever done for me? Besides putting some good and some not so good humor into photography.
Thank you Kai. We sometimes forget what a great commentator you are. Please consider making more videos with this type of commentary and reflection on the industry.
It is quiet obvious why Canon didn't made a lot of fuss about this camera, no RUclipsr would have talked good about it, like it actually happened. They know the market for this is for hobbyist photographers that want to upgrade to Full frame and have no interested on video, which of course doesn't include RUclipsrs, but mid-working class people with a good enough budget and decent enough knowledge about photography.
You're right. There's that intangible element that some overlook. The RP felt great in my hands. Felt like something I'd actually wanna use. I know that Sony cameras are great but I hate the way they feel in hand and hate their menus.
Canon have the interface, the flip screen.... and ..... unfortunately I'm not sure what they have been doing with this range of cameras. As someone who uses video/photo modes equally and cant afford a 1dx there isn't choice in their range to convince me... yet. I have faith they will crack this, but at the moment sony/Fuji have definitely got ahead of the game. 4k 60 and 1080 120 is the standard from 2018. Really looking for 4k 120 and 6k or 8k 30fps as the next game changers. Thanks for the video Kai
That’s the problem with this generation of photographers, they just want that video feature. It’s sad that people stopped taking actual photos with cameras anymore.
FIRST!! Ive been watching you for so many years! Great videos and im glad you have your own channel. I remember the day you left DigitalRev and im glad you never stopped! Greating's from Texas!
I really don't know at what point 4K and how many FPS on continuous autofocus got so important for cameras, things that are designed to take photographs. Are all people professional moto racing photographers or am I missing something?
Totally agree, this video and burst shooting thing is becoming an obsession with a lot reviewers. I just want things to evolve to a point where a split happens and the cameras come either as video only or still photo's only. My Girlfriend is part of a dance group and wanted to video their practice sessions and performances, but their phone stuff was crap on RUclips, so they chipped in and bought a nice Panasonic 1080p camcorder and they just set and forget it, and it's perfect for them, videos are excellent quality. If you videoing anything short of a professional clip for art or commercial reasons, most people would be better off with a good quality camcorder, no ones going to be criticising your kid movies ! Point is that, stills and videos, are two different things and trying to do both on one machine always brings compromises. I don't want any video so I don't want to have to pay for that extra processing that seems to come in every camera today. Canon should of taken the video out of the RP and made it a great stills camera, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've been seriously looking at the Sigma DP Quattro, seems to have a few issues, but excellent pic quality and NO VIDEO !
Oh damn. You mean it doesn't actually compose my pictures, position my models, pick what landscapes I should shoot, jump into my hand, load it's own SD card? What a piece of shit?!
I'm just looking to upgrade from my 7D, and I was looking at the 5D MkIII or 6D MkII until the guy at the camera store put an EOS RP in my hands. All three cameras are about the same price (used price for the 5D MkIII of course), so I guess what I need to know is if the RP is a good choice over the 5D MkIII and 6D MkII for stills, particularly concert photography and fashion. What say you, Kai?
Lok Roks!!! The EOS RP, not so much -- but, as you say, for an entry-level, full-frame photo camera, it's not bad -- and with the option (the lens adapter is included free) of using all Canon EF lenses, this is a good, first-step, upgrade path for a Canon DLSR photographer to move to mirrorless -- they can trade in their DSLR body and keep all of their lenses....
Hm, 5D3 on Adorama/Craigslist/B7H used for about the price of an RP body... But, skipping lightly over that, what kills it for me is the SENSOR. Being quite crippled of brain I spent a month's worth of lunches browsing maybe 1500 pages of photos in the Flickr Canon 135/2 and 24-105 l (original) groups, during which i concluded that a 6D + these lenses is simply awe-inspiring for portraiture. Meanwhile, a reasonable perusal of the 6D Mark II groups yields - not one damn photo that can come anywhere within a thousand miles of the 6D for portraits. I would love to be wrong about this - show me the pics and I might even consider buying an RP.
have the chance to buy a 6d for $600, or 6d2 for $1200. Nice to see someone has done actual homework on comparing the 2 considering I haven’t found many videos on it. I think the direction I’ll be taking is the 6d with nice glass. Thanks for your comment 👍🏻
@@WesleyDropDead I have the 6D and I love the colors, size, price, etc. But what it's lacking in is autofocus options. I do miss quite a lot of shots because of it. I'm a big fan of the way you guys think because the 6D really is a gem, and not just value wise. But personally I'd love to upgrade to something that gives me that auto-eye-focus :-)
Regarding the 6DMII and portraiture: I think the people who buy the 6DmII just aren't into portraiture. Doesn't feel like a portraiture camera to me. I'd put it in a 'it's a fast small and affordable full frame for action photo's and stuff' box, even though it's probably not. Us budget portraiture geeks will reach for the 6D or 5DmIII or something mirrorless, I suppose.
What you said has nothing to do with the quality of the sensor. It's literally a bit better than what you'll find in a 5d2, and people took (and take) excellent portraits with that. The problem is, that sensor is old and asking new camera money for it is silly. That's all. People would be better off saving that few hundreds more for an R and have a camera that doesn't have its roots in 2008.
If you want a full frame Canon for little money and don't care too much about the latest technology or the lack of a mirror, get the OG 6D. That's what I did a year ago and I'm still blown away by the quality and value of a camera that came out in 2012. Plus, lots of EF lenses and (used condition) very good value L lenses to choose from
@@shelosalinas i own mirrorless and dslr. Really dont see much difference between them other than previewing. Dslr has no viewer lag so it is actually better. Only use mirrorless for longer reach and video
If it had 1080p 24fps and was kitted with the upcoming 24-240mm lens at a reasonable price then maybe. I can understand the 4k cropped and lack of dpaf at that price point.
And if I want not only overpriced good lenses, but cheap good lenses? If I dont want to pay 1,5-3 times more for equal Sony lenses? I know that many Sony lovers dont need lenses at all, DR is only one thing they need, but I am not one of them.
sergtrav Yeah, you can buy any EF lenses that were made in the last 32 years and they would be fully functional with the EF adapter on the RP. Sony lovers just don’t want to accept that not everybody wants a Sony. I’d pick the RP over the A7II any day just on the fully articulated fully functional touchscreen alone... I tried Sony but their ergonomics is not for me doesn’t matter how long their specs sheet is.
what am i gonna do with all those cheap third party lenses that outperform canon and all those adapters that let me use any lens i want? See like the guy below complaining about ergonomics, fully understandable. But youre just making shit up.
@@limyohwan The problem with all those cheap third party lenses is that their functionality - like AF - is crap/unreliable compared to the native lenses... On the other hand, Canon's wast selection of EF lenses will work like native lenses with Canon's EF adapter.
Sony sold us the E mount as compatible with all the lenses in the world. Sadly, this wasn't true. It's hit and miss. EF on RF works pretty good. And the AF on the RP is good in itself.
They knew camera nerds would have a cardiac arrest because all they want is "IMPRESS ME with something I've never even dreamt of or it's automatically a bad camera". This camera is NOT targeted at them. It does NOT have dual card slots (even tho most reviewers aren't even wedding photogs), so they didn't need the complaining. Canon took it old school and intro'd the camera to dealers like it's 1990 again, and that's just fine coz those are the people who will sell it to their target market: amateurs who wanna upgrade from phones or crop frame.
But is it really an upgrade from a Canon APS-C? Burst speed, auto focus tracking, build quality. What's the point in buying a FF body if all your lenses are EF-S? And if you'd already been planning on upgrading by having bought some FF lenses, is an RP really what you're after? Even as an upgrade from a lower level Canon APS-C I don't follow. You're still basically starting again.
The main Problem with the RF-Lens-Lineup is ... well .. it's almost all L-Lenses. It wouldn't be too bad to have an adapted, cheapish EF 24-105 STM on it, but there are so many used EF lenses out there for less money that might be right where it's strenght might be. And since it's an RF-Mount, it also takes the EF-S-Stuff although the crop stays and renders the FF-Sensor slightly useless.
IDK why all the RUclipsrs are shitting on RP, it's way better than the disappointment that R is, IK RP has nothing standalone to offer other than its price which makes it a great starting point (for new FF camera) into FF mirrorless photography camera, also smaller and better looking, video is RiP tho
Because all RUclipsrs need a camera for exactly that, RUclips. Which is a platform based off of video and not photography. So in their eyes, it renders this camera completely useless. And for $1300, it's not cheap for most people and there are many better choices for less. As Kai explained and I completely agree, this is a so called cheap body to adapt to expensive lenses which makes no sense. Perhaps they're taking a page out of Sony's book and trying to lure people into buying a camera for their expensive upcoming lens lineup? 🤔🤷♂️ People going into full frame most likely already have another camera and want to upgrade which means they also have a bit more money. Canon already makes an entry level full frame camera, the 6dii. They didnt need another mirrorless option with worse specs imo. They need that high end "R" with A7iii/1dxii specs so all of us with Canon glass dont sell everything and jump ship.
I've got 3 options. Which one you suggest. CANON M6 MARK II CANON EOS RP SONY A6400. Which one is the best option. 80% times i'll be using this for potraits and street photography, and landscapes. Rest i'll try videos.
I don't even know what shooting flat is. All I know is that you don't need to have 2 gazillion settings to get a nice clear image of someone looking into a camera 3 feet away from their face.
Sony A7ii Kit + 28/2, 50/1.8 & 85/1.8 = 2299 US$ Canon RP + 28-70 2.0 = 1299+2299 = 3598 US$ Sony is less than 2/3rds the price once kitted out with a bag of Bokehlicious primes.. Even if you went with the RF 24-105/4, the Canon kit would still cost 2398..
@@MikedieONE the AF of the A7II is great actually. Don't know if it's better or worse than the RP, but there's really no problem with it. The A7's AF was pretty pants, though.
You can still get the Sony A7 MKII for £400 cheaper here in the UK so why do you keep banging on about it being a bargain for a full frame entry level camera? It's not it's expensive. The A7 MKII has a better sensor, IBIS , 1080 HD at 24p, can shoot faster with continuous AF, far larger NATIVE lens selection with many affordable options. Lack of 4K is hardly an issue as the 4K from the RP is so crippled it's worthless. The A7II with the superb Tamron 28-75 F2.8 can be had for just £199 more than this half baked overpriced Canon.
I Believe Canon finally added 24fps in 1080p. The EOS RP is also $999 now. I think it’s almost the perfect travel/vlogging camera. If they can just fix the 4k issues like cropping the image & lack of dual pixel focusing. If they can, Canon has a real winner here.
Old news but still... so you switched from Canon to Sony ? If someone has invested with one brand wouldnt it be cheaper to switch to another model rather than brand ??
I always appreciate your self-aware perspective on gear and photography. I don't think the public generally understand that photo tech can't move anywhere near as fast as other consumer electronics.
A lot of RUclips photogs/reviewers will repeat these similar refrains, "it's not about the gear" or "save money and buy lenses instead." So here you have a brand new camera that gives you a lower entry into amazing full frame lenses (both EF and RF) than any other brand new camera on the market -- by a lot -- and everyone is focused on what it's missing. And what is it missing exactly? Video features? Trust me, 1080/30 is plenty for your family videos, that wedding video that will maybe be seen a handful of times in the first month then never again, and your RUclips content. What about that 4K crop? Steven Soderbergh is out here making movie after movie on generations old iPhones that have sensors smaller than your pinky nail. If any of you out there are actually making a film that will get distribution you're probably going to be renting a Red or Arri anyway. And if you are making that movie, stop worrying about the crop and focus on the script.

Yeah. Before 2012, full frame digital was the domain of rich people. 6D came out and made the format just attainable.
That'll sell like hot cakes!!"

wildlife, and macro photography.
Wow. A youtube personality that doesn’t think every camera should be designed for his specific needs? Shocking.
Kai is one of the few RUclips reviewers who truly understand the purpose of the eos rp, a photo camera that is decent enough for the casual photographer who doesn't expect much at a lower price point
It helps to take a step back and look at the camera market
If that is the case you get a Fuji and enjoy infinitely better EVERYTHING. RP is a scam period.

The question is wether newcomers will shy away from adapting do to being new to the industry
EF primes are the shit. I’m looking at you 28mm f1.8
A Person EVF is an an advantage over DSLR. Dual Pixel AF is available for stills. Adapting lenses is a plus.
A7S for 600$ used + A7 for 400$ used :P
Dslr better
rkan2 more like 650 unless you buy a parts body and the A7 is barely usable as a non landscape/manual focus only camera
And the Sony cameras feel cheap in the hands compared to canon
And those cameras don’t have 4K or flippy screen
So 1,299$ is cheap? guess I'm poor as hell then

Chak Wong How do you like it?
What I'm looking for:
1) reasonably lightweight
2) definitely full-frame
3) definitely fully articulating viewfinder (I used the 6D VF in every possible angle, all the time)
RP was the only one on the market I could find that fit those needs.
Yes but when Sony did it they were first full frame mirrorless camera and people weren’t convinced on mirrorless
I have it and it's the camera with the best auto-focus I've ever held
This review should be revisited. Body alone is $999 and you can get the RF 24-240 lens kit, for only about $1,500. You get a fairly decent camera, with a great lens that may be, the only lens you'll ever need for this camera.
Canon is the king of making every camera an entry level to a higher model that costs double.
Glad to see Lok in your video. It is like George Clooney with Brad Pit. They belong together like Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel.
Yes it is what it is, and it ticks all the boxes for my need:
- full frame mirrorless
- good and not expensive 35mm
- flipout screen + touch screen
- basic video options
- usb charging
- good grip + comfortable to hold
Though, i would have prefer a bigger battery
This is literally the most entertaining and hilarious camera video I've ever seen
Someone still hasn't returned their Kipon 40mm to that poor man

It's perfect for taking photos. Light and capable.
Yes, it is a very capable camera always talked down by people who probably never use one.
@@ISunnyChicken bro the Eos rp is the SAME sensor as the 6d 2
@@touyube481 I know that. Honestly I don't recommend this camera at all to any hybrid shooters. I think the RP is for those who own a 5D Mark IV or a 1DX Mark II, and lust over the RF lenses, so it's basically a rear lens cover that one can use to test the lenses during the wait of release of the "pro Canon Mirrorless body"
Or a RF -Z/ RF-FE adapter
Lol I think that's me.
That's me too
RF to Z or to FE will never happen. It is not possible. RF has a longer flange distance than both of them
@@bentonbrightwell8953 I think having a longer flange distance is what makes enough room for an adapter to happen, I admit that Z-RF and FE-RF will not happen with today's knowledge of physics (or at least mine)
I always thought that internet brainwashing wouldnt work, you are changing my opinion... weak minds can be easily manipulated...
this is $1300 at launch.

But Kai complaining about it, in a sarcastic way.

You gotta love Kai-Lock's bromance.
Loved the matrix meme!
Honestly one of the realest videos talking about the canon RP " really people" yall thought lol.
The lenses? thats the big bonus here for the RP. the EF adapter comes in FOR FREE. you can add all EF lenses ever made on it with great AF. just get the RP and a 24mm f2.8 pancake and a 50mm f1.8 (each lens around 100$). and you have a great light fullframe setup already!
why canon did not send you Eos RP? because they worried, you will crash it with your car!

Ken Rockwell the man the 'reviews' the legend 😂 RUclips before video right there.

it's crazy to think that someone who has internet and is into cameras and stuff doesn't know Ken Rockwell, but I guess I'm just getting old...
5 years later and I'm wondering if Lok is still okay after eating that plate.
Canon being Canon.
This would have been great in 2016.
No not even beck then checkout the A7 mk2.
It's 24 Mp sensor {roughly same as the D750) is in a complete different league.
Does the RP have 'digital' stabilization. I can find some sites saying it has but can't see it on Canon's site.
That’s the problem with this generation of photographers, they just want that video feature. It’s sad that people stopped taking actual photos with cameras anymore.
As a first full frame camera wouldn't the d750 be a better choice?
Or a D610. Or a used Nikon FF. If you're into Nikon. Definitely not if you have a bunch of Canon EF lenses you want to use.
All of that stuff is great, but WHATS IN THE DAMN BOX???
Big props for the conclusion.

I have been one of your followers since Digitalrev. Would buy a second hand RP or an Eos 5d mk 3 ? Photo is the most important for me.

I agree about the price thing though, sure it's cheap but those lenses designed for it in no way are - I guess you can use an adapter for old lenses
Well said
have the chance to buy a 6d for $600, or 6d2 for $1200.
Plus, lots of EF lenses and (used condition) very good value L lenses to choose from
I'm still using the 5dm2
for $1000 you can get the Sony a7 with lens, 5fps full frame
For $1,000 I can get a 6d and lens...Full frame and 1,200+ shots per battery...
@@consciousgentile5141 keep it mirrorless, but also I've gotten up to 900~ish shots on a full charge from my a7
@@shelosalinas i own mirrorless and dslr.
Really dont see much difference between them other than previewing.
Dslr has no viewer lag so it is actually better.
Only use mirrorless for longer reach and video
A7 is not a camera, it's a prototype haha. Shity focus and batterylife.
You have around 20AF lenses with native mount on Sony to choose from and several under/around 500 dollars.
What i've been saying! It's just 4 months!! The RP was already developed when the R was released!
Exactly and imo video is fine if you shoot 1080p.
Because it's like moving from riding a trabant to a reliant robin. It's slightly better but both cars are still shit.
People going into full frame most likely already have another camera and want to upgrade which means they also have a bit more money. Canon already makes an entry level full frame camera, the 6dii. They didnt need another mirrorless option with worse specs imo. They need that high end "R" with A7iii/1dxii specs so all of us with Canon glass dont sell everything and jump ship.

Sony A7ii Kit + 28/2, 50/1.8 & 85/1.8 = 2299 US$
Canon RP + 28-70 2.0 = 1299+2299 = 3598 US$

I love what you mentioned at the end. Don't let some social media influencer make the decision for you.

I always appreciate your self-aware perspective on gear and photography. I don't think the public generally understand that photo tech can't move anywhere near as fast as other consumer electronics.
Canon EOS R Prosthetic
after all, heavily crippled.
