  • Superb version of this tune by Louis Armstrong, acting as a bartender, and the former Luis Russell Orchestra. Wonderful performance by "Satch".

    Beyond his unmistakable genius as a musician, Louis Armstrong had another, simpler quality that is so rare: he's having so much fun performing that you can't help but have fun watching him. If this clip doesn't make you smile, check yourself for a pulse.

    That intro is so distinctly Satchmo. The horn, his voice, unmistakably him.

    It's from an episode, "the Blue Butterfly". The setting was in the 1940's, and this song was really special to the couple in the story.

    Needless to say that Satch is the greatest ever. Not only is he the most fabulous trupeter in jazz, but the greatest jazz singer too! When Dizzy Gillespie playet 10 notes in a bar trying to swing, Armstrong just needed two!

    • @MrKlemps
      @MrKlemps 2 года назад

      But later in life Dizz admitted to spending a lot of time learning what notes NOT to play!

      Fats did not write it, nor did he ever claim that.

    • @caradineen

      harryoakley Either way it's still a great song! And great video here, thank you for sharing, Harry. I read somewhere that when he was older he heard the song on the radio later on and exclaimed "that's my song!" I don't remember where i read that, but another small reference at least suggesting a controversy: "Some controversy surrounds the song's authorship. Andy Razaf biographer Harry Singer offers circumstantial evidence that suggests Fats Waller might have sold the melody to McHugh in 1926 and that the lyrics were by Andy Razaf."

    Video with wrong speed. Too fast, too high! Louis did not play the tune in concert A !!!
    Must be Ab.

    • @hanseekhoff1093
      @hanseekhoff1093 8 лет назад +6

      +Bix Bolden It's only slightly sharper than Ab actually. I copied this from a 16mm film, which was no doubt also a copy. During all that copying a toch of tempo increase is unavoidable and nothing to get so worked up about. "Lovely bit of Louis Armstrong music" would have been a nicer comment.

    • @DmitriFilms
      @DmitriFilms 8 лет назад +2

      +Bix Bolden You know what, i like this speed. It sounds brilliant, perfect even i'd say.
