i dont know why i start crying when ever i hear sakura sakura by kimio eto ...
Maybe because Sakura is about the how the cherry blossoms, such as in life, are beautiful for a time, and then they fall from the trees, and even that is beautiful...
@@skmkoto that's an Awsome way to look at life, I see even tho u are American u didn't seem to lose your culture at all! Seem like u are very wise and respectful. Beautifully respecting your cultural heritage ancestors
@@iriviking774 I feel that each of us have a history and ancestors who came before us, and it's important to acknowledge that and pay respect to it. It's what makes each of us very special and unique.
@@skmkoto I totally agree with u! It's always good to remember where u came from. And always have respect for those who came before you
I do too, especially when I hear it on shakuhachi
Wow! She’s probably one of the greatest koto musicians alive today. Thank you for sharing.
I wish I were, but thank you for the compliment!
So beautiful, my kids and I found an old shellac record of Japanese music at the thrift store and fell in love. My 5 year old son amazed me by playing the opening notes of Sakura Sakura on the piano. I was so proud he’d figured it all by himself with no one’s help. He also had a little Japanese girlfriend at preschool. Thank you for such a beautiful performance.
Thank you! And wonderful your 5 year old son played Sakura, Sakura! Seems like a budding musician! :-)
When a musician plays or sings from the heart with all their heart, there is no mistaking the connection they have to their gift of music. She is a true musician, and a master of this instrument. Thank you.
And when one receives such a warm compliment, it is very touching to know that we have connected through the music. Thank you for your nice comment, JW!
Beautiful, relaxing and sophisticated, thank you for that performance.
Thank you, Jose!
This is so beautiful. Somehow you managed to capture something so bittersweet about this time. Going to share this with my students. Thank you!!!
Thank you, Colin. I wish you well in these challenging times, but still teaching your students.
Hi Shirley, I keep coming back to this recital aa to me it is the best rendition of “Sukura” I have heard. 🙏
Thank you, Talsius! I play this everyday because it's not easy, and I need to keep my "chops" up with it! It's my favorite version of "Sakura", and I'm glad you like it, too! :-)
I like how distinctive every string stroke is! And this is what makes koto charming and intriguing in a way. Unlike chinese guzheng (which I also enjoy) koto is more about strong emotional expression rather than transfering a beautiful melody

I can't tell how many times i've enjoyed this video. it's sublime.
Thank you so much, Alejandro! Appreciate the comment! 🥰
@@skmkoto I´ve watched hundreds of videos and read thousands of comments of people saying "I like", but never people saying "i come back often to watch it again and again". Your rendition is so touching and beautiful that we keep coming to relive the first time, it never gets old.
I'm very touched@@ARichli !! I made this when we all had to stay home from Covid, feeling sad that all the things we were used to doing were suddenly put on hold. I was working on this piece, and truly didn't feel I played it well, but it has received the most response of anything I've ever posted! Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment! 🥰
It´s because you're right, you didn´t play it well. You played it perfect.@@skmkoto

Many thanks!
So soothing.
Thank you, Graham.
beautiful.
I've heard this song on the koto so many times. I never understood until this version how powerful and deep the emotion of it is.
thank you, Scott! 🙂
Lots of love from India (インド) awasome playing 😍, my goal is someday I will definately learn Japnese Language, come to Japan and learn how to play Koto or Shamisen.🤗😀😀.
Actually, my training on koto has largely been in the U.S. from my mom, and I can't speak fluent Japanese! You can learn in India, especially now by virtual! Just have to get the koto instrument, finger picks and book. If you're interested, I can help you. Please contact me at my email from my website www.skmkoto.com...:-)
Thank you so much for playing and sharing this. Now I don't feel so lonely
Thank you, Chad. I think one is never lonely who can hum a tune...
God that was beautiful. I have never heard such an entrancing cover of Sakura Sakura, Im literally speechless lmao Im so glad you shared this.
Thank you Shirley! Words fail me. I come back to this video so often.
You're so sweet, Chris! Thanks so much for your kind comments!
Wow that part at 4:43 was absolutely stunning this is so intense but i love the sound of the koto its so beautiful i need to buy me one of these. This piece is amazing! this instrument is true meditation
Many thanks for your nice comment, paigesalas8142! 😀
This is so fly 🎶 🎼
Thank you, Jaguar...
What an amazing rendition!
Hearing you talk about COVID and looking back, 2020 seems like such a surreal and absurd year.
I hope you're doing great. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
n k, yes, looking back at 2020 almost seems like a dream, but we are still having to contend with it. Thank you for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the music! 🙂
Came here after watching Rob Scallon's video on the Koto. It's really a beautiful instrument, and your performance really shows the beauty of the instrument.
Thank you Slix Noir.
This melodic masterpiece can be covered as any modern music styles and still it wont be as good as koto alone.Beautiful string sounds with no other elements is just too powerful
Thank you for this beautiful comment. Sometimes the simplest things are the most moving...
Well done Shirley!
Thank you, Diane!
Just finding this but this piece is one of my favorite traditional Japanese pieces. Thank you. ありがとうございます!
Thank you, Lavender, one of my favorite colors!
I have seen the cherry blossom here in Hieizan Sakamoto ( next to Kyoto ) 30 times , but this year without people...it reminded me that we all fall alone and are all at the mercy of the winds of fate. I am learning the koto now, but I must say your performance made me realize how difficult and yet how beautiful it can be ...why is beauty so difficult and takes so many hours of dedication...
Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge with me...ありがとうございました、よろしく Jonni
If you are learning koto now, I find that just the simplest playing can reach one's heart and soul because of the beauty of the sound of a single note. As in anything, the more time and effort one puts into it, the more they will get from it. You can find beauty anywhere. You just have to notice it, and it is in the simplest things...
You're just killin' it. It was actually better than what I heard before from the first time.
You're very kind, Daiki! Music is really helping me through this pandemic, and is even more special to me than it was before.
Listen to the music and watching your hands dancing among the strings
Thank you, Irene! 🙂
Thank you Shirley. God bless you 🙏🏽
Thank you, Venetia! :-)
Absolutely Beautifully Played !!!
Thank you, Spanish Dragon.
That was just the right tempo... Well Done! Shirley!!! And stay safe.
Many thanks, Brett! :-)
That's really remarkable. I've never heard a rendition quite like that. I like all the extra flourishes.
Many thanks! :-)
Now this is a mood
Miss Shirley, I'm currently living in Yokosuka, Kanagawa and just started taking koto lessons today. I hope some day my skills will be half of yours! Beautiful rendition of Sakura 🌸
Congratulations on starting your koto lessons! I hope you enjoy learning about the koto. This is one of my favorite versions of Sakura, music I have been trying to find most of my life, and finally happy to be able to play it! Gambatte! :-)
Love this. My favorite parts are 2:37 when the notes cascade down and 4:38 when you are absolutely shredding!
Many thanks, Robin! I'm glad you enjoyed this piece! :-)
This takes me back to when I used to live in Japan. I trained to play the koto for about 2 years, it was before the earthquake, I continued playing afterwards for a bit as well but, eventually I left the elementary school where I was learning and went to high school. I loved playing it and its a sound I've dearly missed, Thank you
Thank you for sharing that story, Thomas. The sound of koto clearly holds a special place in your heart.
Wow!! Such a beautiful version... and thanks so much for sharing this! Aloha & Mahalo! (Maile.)
I find the koto has such an amazing sound to it, I really wanna play it now :) beautiful!! ❤
I love the sound of the koto, too! I hope you find a way to play it! If not, you can contact me, too! :-)
Thank you for this. Beautiful. Stay safe. Best wishes from Panama.
Wow, Panama! Are there koto players there? Thank you for responding!
Makes my day ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Thank you wishing you and yours and everyone very well!!!!! I miss the festivals so much......
I miss the festivals, too, and we are still having to have them virtually. But soon, I hope things will gradually go back to some kind of normalcy. Crossing fingers...
Thank you, this is the best version that i have heard so far. Eve uk
Thank you, Eve from the UK! Much appreciated! 🙂
This is beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Kat! Much appreciated!
My Oka-san sent me this to watch. Thank you for posting. You speak excellent English! What is the instrument you're playing on called? Thanks again!
Koto.
I'm a 4th generation American of Japanese descent, so I should speak good English! (I'm in trouble if I don't! My Japanese is not that good...). I'm playing the Japanese koto, which I learned from my mom. My mom learned to play when she was a little girl in the American concentration camps of Topaz, Utah and Tule Lake, California during WWII...
Muchas gracias por ser, por ser música, por compartir, gracias, gracias.
Thank you, Efrain, for your comments in Spanish. Much appreciated.
Stunning.. she must be a Grandmaster..
Kono oto tomare anime brought me here.. ❤️
Really, Kono oto tomare anime brought you here? That's interesting! I love that anime! I understand that the animator's mother and sister are both koto players, which is why the anime is quite accurate about koto playing and the koto world!
I have a Masters degree (DaiShihan) from the Chikushi Kai Koto School in Fukuoka, Japan, and I teach and perform from Oakland, California, also on Zoom...
@@skmkoto OMG! tbh after watching this, I binge watched all your videos.. ❤️ Happy New Year! :)
@@vanou08 I hope you enjoyed watching and listening to the music! Thanks for your comment, and Happy New Year to you, too! :-)
That’s amazing!!! I’m Guzheng player and now I wanna learn that! As I’m watching it I realize there really got some same between koto and guzheng, and I think both of them has strong different cultures character, that makes them incredible! You are an really good player, thank you for sharing that!
Koto and Guzheng are sister zithers! They both have various number of strings, but Koto generally has strings made of silk or nylon and the Guzheng has steel strings so they both have different sounds, bringing about different textures.
This is a true gift. Thank you so much. Even one year later, this is still really appreciated. Greetings from France.
Wow, thank you and merci for your comment from France! Isn't it sad that we are still fighting this virus all over the world, which makes the video I made of "Sakura" still relevant. My hope is that within this year, we will finally have the situation more under control. We can only hope and pray...
This is magnificent 😍. It felt like gentle yet piercing at some point.
Thank you, Alices, for your kind comment. :-)
Thanks Shirley! 😃. Very beautiful
Thank you, Darrell!
Thank you so much for a wonderful performance, I am always amazed and wish to play something like that someday; however, I remember I almost cry sometimes over the feeling and beauty of it all, I get too caught up :)
Koto can be a very nice instrument to play in its simplicity, only having 13 strings. After you tune it, you can play many things. You can put your own feeling in it. It's a good way to express yourself, I think.
Incredibly beautiful.
Thank you so much!
You play in a very powerful energy. I have listened to several others after coming across your performance of this song. Was my first time hearing the song and after comparing yours to other performers that have played it well too I think yours not only sounds the best but has the most passion and energy. Your magic can be heard in every note. True alchemy of sound. From one musician to another, your music has touched my heart. It has also opened me to an instrument I never knew I loved and I'm grateful. I have listened for several hours now. It's incredible. You are truly in control of your instrument I think. Magical. Thank you.
I appreciate your warm comments, Antreg. Thank you for expressing your feelings about the music. I'm very touched, one musician to another...
Thanks for this. I was not familiar with the koto. I am finding it a fascinating and elegant instrument.
Thank you for your comments. The koto is a very simple instrument, only 13 strings, but it can sound like there are many.
素晴らしい演奏、ありがとうございました
Thank you, Motoko-san! 🙂
Wow, what a stunning and talented performance! I love the melancholy listening to this....
Thank you, Ganja Queen.

Thank you el Esdi.
Some time ago I accidentally created this melody on my piano, then I searched for it with OK Google and I realized that it already existed
It is a beautiful simple melody, very much expressing the soul of the Japanese, in my feeling. I'm glad that you enjoy it!

Just amazing, thank you!
Thank you, Seattle CD! Much appreciated! :-)
I am indian but attracted to japanese music and culture. I love it. I even heard Toshiba Yonekawa's performance.
I love Indian music, too! I had a world jazz band with a hand drummer who plays Middle Eastern and Indian music. I learned about how to play koto in odd-meters from him! Very challenging, and fun!
Is koto hard to learn?
Happy new year.
@@hrusheekkara1190 Not really! You have to tune it first before you play, but there are some koto apps that my students have been using to help them tune so it's a little easier now!

To Blossom Too Soon
Sakura Sakura
Where have you gone
now that spring has left us
and Summers come along
Where is the pink and tender white
That blossomed in the dead of night
and in the waking hours a week or so
One by one in late or early spring, you go....
now gathered into flurries on sills, clustered in corners, and on calm still waters....
