Dear Ms. Kimura, you can rest assured you have achieved your goal: your Chaconne is no less breathtaking than Perlman's. Thank you for presenting this most beautiful piece on your difficult instrument. Your touch and skill make this music seem as written just for you and your koto. Perfect.

Brilliant! Art as a celebration of human ingenuity is radiant through your performance. I like the curation that neutralizes the flavor of traditional Koto-sound, honoring the original. Your execution is absolutely awe-striking. I was particularly amazed by how the chromatic movements, the two key changes, and the arpeggio part were played with such precision and proficiency. JS Bach would be so pleased. RIP Maria Barbara Bach 🙏
As a guitarist, I played this wonderful work with tears in my eyes, so deep and transcendental is the wonder of J. S. Bach's musical thought. I found everything here while listening to this work played on a Koto. The delicacy, the depth, I would even say the respect that we must have for this work so demonstrative of the deep connection that J. S. Bach had with the world of sound. A wonderful interpretation that goes beyond understanding, so much so that the adaptation on this instrument requires constant adjustment with the alterations. A performance that leaves us speechless, but makes us live a pure moment of bliss. Thank you so much Mrs. Maya Kimura for daring to confront this immense challenge with so much sensitivity, and a mastery that makes us completely forget all the difficulties of adaptation. I felt that the Chaconne was fully adapted to the koto and to your playing. Bach would be proud of how well you brought out the core intent of the composition!
Bending strings is part of the art - but also moving the bridges seemingly with little effort… I’m absolutely knocked to the floor in amazement… After pondering the complexity and sheer wonder of her performance, my words can’t express anything meaningful. My deepest thanks! 🙏
This is impossibility!!! For an instrument like koto to faithfully make music of Bach's time one needs to constantly retune, repurposes strings while constantly augmenting intonation on the fly, and on top of all these, project the great musical thoughts and emotional depth the work itself carries. I refuse to believe any human can do it, unless it is a miracle....It must have been a miracle!

This must be the morning for great musicians. First on the cello now this fantastic incredible experience. You are a great musician. I know the chaconne backwards and forwards every note. I studied Bach for four years. You are such a great musician . You certainly made my day. Thank you so much.
This is so impressive on many levels. To interpret, you have to know the piece intimately, and there is a lot to remember, lots. And the sheer physicality of it. That instrument seems designed to wreck a person's back, yet she danced around it with lightness and focus. Thank you for your work and dedication. And thank you for sharing with us.
Funny, my own classical guitar teacher told me the same thing when I was 18 and asked to play this song. She said I need to be older to properly interpret the song. I picked it up again when I was 37 and it took me nearly 2 years to play it to my satisfaction. This woman plays it beautifully on an instrument so foreign to Western music is absolutely amazing.
I bet Bach would absolutely have loved this, so interesting hearing what the instrument does for example in the broken chords and bringing out the harmonies so beautifully.
Absolutely breathtaking. As a pianist, this interpretation gives such a breath of fresh air to the piece entirely. Taking this piece at this slower tempo with so much space and air between harmonies creates such an intense atmosphere that is so captivating. Bravo 👏🏼
Unbelievable beautiful - she is not only able to play this complicated piece - she can also tune the instrument while performing, just beyond this world. I have heard this chaconne being played by many artists and also on unimaginable instruments and all of them where up to this monumental piece of music. I got to know this chaconne not before I was in my 80s - I am thankful that I didn't die before that happened,
When you say 'tuning' are you referring to Ms. Kimura placing her fingers on the other side of the bridge and pressing the string down? That would just be temporarily bending the string to get chromatics. That is often done to get vibrato, but in this case, it allows her to tune the 25 strings to a single key, and then bend the notes for any chromatics needed in the score. UPDATE: Sorry, you are correct, I see that she is moving the bridges as the piece progresses!
Lovingly performed and faithful to the original. Your technical mastery of the koto is on full display. I really enjoyed the performance. Thank you for sharing this video.
@@dcc70A musician can't interpret a song? If she can't be too rubato, I guess she shouldn't be playing it on a koto, either. I mean if one were trying to be pedantic about it, it seems the tempo would be the least of one's concerns.
This is an instant classic of the towering repertoire. Kimura shows a depth of understanding that would have surprised and moved J.S. Bach probably to tears. Well, it got me anyway chaps :')
Assolutamente emozionante e commovente esecuzione!!! Grandissima!!! Vorrei abbracciarla!!!
I've been watching this video for many times now but still can't find the words to express my feelings. Doesn't matter, others already have said everything what possibly could be said. I just want to add, it was a great occasion when a great piece, a great artist and a great instrument met each other. And the most important thing: the devotion to the piece was unsurpassable.
All you need is Bach, artists in love with music, complex instruments they play and ears to listen. Your soul connects with its homeland and a new life begins ❤
I can't speak for her, but as a koto player, what we normally do if we have to quickly change the bridge position during a piece, is during setting up, make a small chalk mark (on the sound board) at the point we need to move the bridge to. It is surprisingly accurate, because even if the strings tighten or slacken due to temperature, as they are all the same thickness, they all adjust by the same amount.

@@IfUfindthisURlost That's fine once, but all the time?
She isn't retuning all the time, most of the time she is simply string bending. The string is supported by a bridge, which divides it in to a playing side and an untuned side. When she pushes the string down, she is doing that on the untuned side, in order to tighten it. This can be done in half or whole steps in order to gain two more tones from the same string. When released, the sting returns to its previous tuned note. This is not retuning the instrument, but is equivalent to a guitar player bending a string.
this amazing instrument was made for this transcendent piece of music, and this transcendent piece of music was made for a sublime artist like Kimura san. much gratitude.
Amazing, one is transported to a recollection of Lute and Harpsichord timbres... yet this is unique. Your rubato and dynamic sense are superb, even invoking the ponticello and tasto of the original violin manuscript (BWV 1004). Your roaming intonation and tuning changes/string depressions are a sight to behold! Bravo Maestra.
Not only was the interpretation beautiful, the mastery of the instrument and the dificulty of playing bent over it just blew my mind. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.
I am STUNNED to see this performed on the koto. What a masterful performance. There aren’t even words for how impressed I am. Thank you so much for the time you must have spent working on this, and thank you for recording it to share with us!
This is one of the deepest and reflexive pieces of my favorite composer. In the 70s I found a recording of Bach's music played on Japanese instruments it was a marvelous recording that I cherished for a long time. This performance, although the difficulties of the composition and the inherent difficulties of the koto, is of such beauty that any praise to the performer falls short of my thoughts and words. ¡Bravo, bravísimo! Thanks for such beauty. There's something about the Koto that has the warmth of flesh. Certainly if Bach knew about the instrument he would wrote exquisite music for it, as he did for the lute and the cello.
Absolutely and utterly amazing! Many years ago, I saw Segovia play this - but now I think this is my favourite. It's not a question of the evident skill or the difficulty of the instrument, but the sheer musicality of the interpretation.

@@didiermontagnier6114you should upload your chaconne.
I bet Bach would absolutely have loved this, so interesting hearing what the instrument does for example in the broken chords and bringing out the harmonies so beautifully.
Mesmerizing. Hypnotic. Magical, Beautiful.
Thank you.
Absolutely breathtaking. As a pianist, this interpretation gives such a breath of fresh air to the piece entirely. Taking this piece at this slower tempo with so much space and air between harmonies creates such an intense atmosphere that is so captivating. Bravo 👏🏼
Absolutely extraordinary! No superlatives come close to expressing the beauty and power of this performance. Bravo!!!
Brava! What a beautiful interpretation. Moved me to tears. Bach would be so proud.
♥
😢this performance had me crying. so touching so so beautiful
First, I heard a fantastic rendering of this on Swedish nyckelharpa, then this! They both sound like Bach composed it for their specific instrument!
This remains one of the few most amazing things I have seen ever.
Really beautiful. At certain passages it moves the soul even more than the violin does.
Sublime! Bach transcends all boundaries, your artistry commands the utmost respect, Bravo!

I was waiting for a standing ovation of the crowd at the end of the video... You deserve one, Maya!

Who knew the traditional koto could play such amazing classical music. Maya Kimura is a true master of her instrument. Bravo!!
Lovingly performed and faithful to the original. Your technical mastery of the koto is on full display. I really enjoyed the performance. Thank you for sharing this video.
The rhythm at the beginning already is far from what Bach wrote.
A little too free with the rubato
@@dcc70A musician can't interpret a song? If she can't be too rubato, I guess she shouldn't be playing it on a koto, either.
I mean if one were trying to be pedantic about it, it seems the tempo would be the least of one's concerns.
Wunderbare Interpretation.
respect from China!
This is an instant classic of the towering repertoire. Kimura shows a depth of understanding that would have surprised and moved J.S. Bach probably to tears. Well, it got me anyway chaps :')
Indeed! I think Bach is looking down from wherever he is and is deeply moved!
Oh my god.....this is absolutely outstanding!
Incredible! A fabulous interpretation***** thoughtful, elegant and truly expressive. Bach would be charmed and moved by your music Maya!
Absolutelly wonderful! one of the best musicians ever listened. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I cannot imagine how deeply you need to know the music to be able to retune the instrument on the fly. Amazing.
@@IfUfindthisURlost At 4:40 she's moving the bridges around though, not just bending the string.
@@orsonpeters That's right, please read the original reply which covers this.
this amazing instrument was made for this transcendent piece of music, and this transcendent piece of music was made for a sublime artist like Kimura san. much gratitude.
One of the greatest Bach interpretations. Very deep, passionate and very baroque. Rhythm and Notes inégales are marvelous.
This piece sounds so natural. Like it was made for it. Sounds a lot like the baroque lute
I was thinking viole de gambe.
Incredible mastery of the instrument!
Absolutely and utterly amazing! Many years ago, I saw Segovia play this - but now I think this is my favourite. It's not a question of the evident skill or the difficulty of the instrument, but the sheer musicality of the interpretation.
Bach wrote music - he left it to us to play it - even on instruments he never knew about (and even those we still haven't invented...)
Utterly sensational, beautiful in every possible way.
