Thank you. I did the water pump your way today (leaving the crankshaft pulley on), and although I was very careful, the belt still loosened off the crank cog, and I couldn't get it back on (because of too much tension on the "down" side of the belt). I turned the crank back a few degrees (like 5...), and that gave me enough room to refit the belt on the lower cog. But then there wasn't enough slack on the tensioner side to get the tensioner bolt back in, so I turned the crank back (to the original TDC mark) and was able to complete the job , making SURE the belt stayed on the crank cog. I turned the engine over using the 30mm nut, and triple checked the timing marks. Then cranked the engine, the spark plugs were out (see below) so it had no compression, and lined up the crank pulley pin at 12:00, nope, the cams were at the bottom, so one more rotation, then the cam gears and crank TDC mark all lined up! Then got the engine running (spark plugs, coolant ect) before buttoning up the job. Thank you for your video! Paul Oh, just to make things easy, I took off the "upper cross over motor mount bar" and the spark plugs. It add a bit of time, but makes the job easier.
Fine job! I was changing the accessory tensioner on a T6 when I noticed leaking. Now I know. Thank you. You're tie-wrap technique saves a ton of work!!!
I like how you keep reminding us that these steps take time. I just did this on my 1998 S70 and, honestly, it was a bitch. Worth it it though for money savings and self esteem. Very nice tutorial!!
Great point, Dave! Just needed water pump. Belt is good. If you are going to do the job at the shop, I would replace belt, tensioner, water pump ect. at once.
Great video bro but the only thing I would suggest is way less gasket maker! It already has a gasket! If you use too much sometimes they work against each other. I usually use a thin thin coating by applying it to my finger and then rubbing it on both sides of the gasket. The cleaning job was wonderful very important!
awesome vid man this is easier than i remember i did this kinda style waterpump years ago as a teenager on an eclipse now i got a volvo just the name scares me and all the horror stories LOL but its cool the WP not that horrific the sensitive part is keeping the timing right thats about it
Hey i need some help if you're still responding to comments on this video, i did everything you did in the video, finished up and got everything put back together. Everything was going fine till i was turning the crankshaft and it just stopped dead in its tracks, can move it at all. Any ideas on what caused it and/or how to fix it? I dont wanna crank the engine in case its seized. Or am i overreacting and its not an issue?
Take out the spark plugs, and only turn it clockwise, (using the 30mm crank nut) and DON'T turn the crank without the cams moving too, the pistons will hit the valves!
Just got a 2002 Volvo S80 with a leaking Water Pump, looks like a good walk through, how difficult is setting time if I do decide to go ahead and replace the belt at the same time as the water pump?
If you're not going to replace a water pump belt and tensioner are pretty easy to do. It takes about 2-3 hours. If pump is leaking and hasn't been changed I would replace it for sure with OEM quality one only.
Had new pump installed,on volvo xc 90 picked it up and discovered heater not working. Contacted shop and they stated system was contaminated by aluminum shaving from pump failure. They reassembled with shavings remaining in the system . Suggestions?
How are you locking the cams in place? Valve spring pressure will usually move one or both cams immediately once tensioner is released, and you will never get it back in position overcoming spring pressure. Cam locking tool is essential.
@@gerardjones7881 Nobody should ever try this without the proper tool, the cam locking fixture. Cam lobes are distributed throughout the circumference of the cam, pushed on by strong valve springs, the intake cam is very likely to move, and has on multiple jobs I've done. It's called the right tool for the right job. Hoping to get lucky the cams dont move is foolish. The fixture is only $30 on ebay, no reason to cut corners. You counting on cams not to move under heavy spring pressure is bad advice. People, do the job right....with the right tools. 💯
The local Volvo guy (not even the stealership!) quoted me $1500 for the waterpump, $2000 if he changed the belt too! I did it myself using this (and all the other RUclips videos). It took most of the day, so take your time.
i pour Coolant in the reservoir as the engine is turned on but its not flowing down So the reservoir just fills up and thats it My car overheats after 5 minutes of driving ! Does that mean that the water pump is bad ? Because radiator is not clogged I already passed water from side to side of the radiator and it flows through Any body please help im new to Volvos
@@PistonShack thank you very much! I watch all your videos. I am now putting by timing belt back on after I replaced the water pump , idler pulley, tensioner pulley and timing belt I just wanted to double check and confirm with you that when the little hole in the harmonic balancer, I'm not sure exactly what it's called. I I set that to 12 for the timing before I took the old timing belt off is it still at 12 and I am about to put on the new timing belt just to confirm when that is set to 12 straight up your on your harmonic balancer timing is correct is that right?
@@lanajacknichols8397 The locating pin on the crank pulley at 12:00 is only an approximation. You need to line up the TINY mark on the inside of the crank cog with the pointer on the block, and the cam marks with the slots on the cam cover.
Thank you.

Do you know how to remove that main aluminum coolant pipe that you can see at 10:10 ? That pipe seal is leaking in my car.

not true at all. i've done tjhis at least 4 times and cam shafts have never moved.
cam lock tool is for removing the vvt hubs or cam sprokets.

First, check how long it takes for the thermostat to open. Does electrical cooling fan turn on at 95C?
@@PistonShackfan Works
No thermostat
I have never seen anyone use an RTV silicone sealant in conjunction with the OEM water pump seal.
Im about to attempt this exact thing. If you are religious, send a prayer my way.
God help!
So how did you end up going with this amigo?
the harmonic balancer did not need to be removed, correct?
That's right, correct.

Dude WAAAYYYY too much small talk dialogue both in between steps AND during any particular explanation.
Go elsewhere then. Tf
