      In my manual to my volvo 850 1997 it says: cooling system: sealed pressurised.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  2 года назад +2

      Awesome! If you can pull the cap off of the reservoir with the engine running, is it pressurized?

    • @enfuzzygamer4987
      @enfuzzygamer4987 2 года назад

      Isn’t the pressure is released when opening the cap? you can hear it hiss and also the coolant level rises after removing the cap. If the system is sealed and the coolant heats up inside, it becomes pressurised because hot coolant takes up more space than cold coolant.

    Quick question Robert,
    2012 Volvo S60 t5...122k miles
    Overheating...due to rad fan not running....at all.
    My question is : does the thermostat have any bearing on whether or not the fan comes on via a sensor or whatnot ?
    Thanks

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  2 года назад

      No, the thermostat is mechanical. It doesn't know if the fan works or not, only the temperature of the fluid running through it.

    I have a 2004 V70 2.4 liter station wagon and had to replace thermostat because prior maintenance person did not put gasket on housing secure enough...started drip leak. I have replaced the thermostat with the half of housing and gasket on the half attached to block. I refilled the radiator through top hose at engine end and reattached and refilled reservoir. I am worried that the fluid is not filling the head on the engine because I did not see much fluid removed from reservoir after short trips. Any suggestions on how to be certain fluid has filled the head?

    what's the maximum engine coolant temps for the 850R turbo?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Год назад

      Like, right before it blows the head gasket? The magic number is 265F for non-pressurized systems for all cars. What blows the head is when the coolant boils. A good coolant mix will boil at 265F.
      I've had my car at 257F and it didn't blow the head gasket or damage the engine.

    Hi Robert.My 1998 Volvo V70 2.0t behaves strangely! On the open road I do not lose cooling fluid, and when driving slower off the road, on the bottle cap that is new, liquid comes out, the thermostat is new and installed correctly, as well as the engine temperature sensor and its connectors! Specifically yesterday I drive 80km on the open road without any loss of fluid, and it was in a bottle a little above "MIN" when it was cold, but today off the road at a speed of 10-20km / h some 3-4km when I opened the hood with with the engine running, water was leaking from the bottle cap, when the fan started, it stopped! But it is impossible to open the cap then! I need your opinion ??? Thank you ! Greatings from Serbia.

    As an onwer of a Volvo v70 XC '01 (P2), I have tried to open the water reservoir while the engine was hot and liquid spilled. In the mean time I have found a fluid leak on the heater cord to the interior, which get the pedal floor wet. Can this be the culprit of the fluid spilling and accumulating pressure, or should I check the head gasket more? The glove test was passed with no problems and maintenance was just done (all filters and oil).

    • @redbeak1453

      Change the heater core. If it's leaking, the only solution is to replace. Could also be the connections. If it hasn't been changed in over 10 years... it's time.

    • @RobertDIY

      As explained in SEVERAL of my videos, the cap should NOT be removed with the engine OFF. You should be able to SLOWLY remove the cap WITH THE ENGINE HOT AND RUNNING.

    Hi mate 2005 s60 2.0T had a leak in the pipe coming from the reservoir and it emptied the coolant. I fixed the pipe and topped back up with coolant. now it’s sometimes struggling to start when cold and when it does start it sits on about 500rpm for a second or two then kicks in normal and will run perfectly. It seems fine when the engine is hot I was wondering if you had any idea what it could be

    Hi Robert. i need your help regarding a pressure problem i have on volvo v 70 year 2002. the cooling circuit gains pressure after the car is stopped after 2 to 3 days. So, after that time, I find the water expansion vessel full and liquid on the floor, so the coolant comes out through the lid. I inform you that I changed the thermostat, water pump, the engine head was rectified, the radiator is only 2 years old and the water pipe that falls from the thermostat to the radiator is also new. I tried to release air through the expansion vessel lid as soon as the thermostat opens and the fans do too. the water level then drops and then when heating the water the level rises to the maximum and I cover it again with the lid.
    I also inform you that I took the new cell gasket and the coolant is the appropriate one for direct use.
    Can you help on that? Tks

    Hey great video! Got a question, recently went to a mechanic to replace a cracked radiator and put in new coolant. All is well, when the same evening the fan went on when starting the car on an ice cold engine. It prevented the car from getting warm! Coolant temperature was low as hell and didn’t circulate through the upper hoses (thermostat closed?). Tried driving for 30 minutes, revving it a few times up to 3000rpm and nothing happened. The fan even went on to blow for 5 minutes after turning the car off.
    Next morning I get in, start the car, fan still starts blowing immediately! Going to the mechanic and halfway it turns off. Car gets warm and mechanic can’t see nothing wrong. Since then everything has been fine. He suspects a thermostat that is unhealthy and didn’t open all the way, but that doesn’t explain the fan starting on an ice cold engine. What can it be? Wanna know so it can’t happen when I go on a trip. Mechanic said all plugs were in okay and he didn’t break anything when replacing the radiator.
