Remember to never add cold liquid to an overheated engine, let the engine cool down, then add your liquid. This also helps to keep a consistent mixed solution no matter how much you lose, whatever is left in the vehicle is always 50/50!!!

Nice video Chris. You could take testing of coolant a little further though. This method only tells you that the coolant is strong enough to stop your car from overheating or the coolant freezing it doesn't tell you if the corrosion inhibitors are still doing their job. To do this use a multimeter. Set it to millivolts scale DC or 20vDC .Put the negative probe on a good ground and the positive probe in to the Antifreeze. The reading should be below 200 millivolts or 0.2v. Anything higher means that the inhibitors are failing and there is an electrolytic reaction taking place. Give it a go.

Being someone from Malaysia, specifically a mere 4.4 degrees north of the equator where we never go below 24°C or 75°F, I always find 'antifreeze' confusing and it's to be something needed in cold places only, turns out it's a 50/50 mix and has higher boiling temp. Glad to learn that! Also, I always use hose wooder for my wipers since it doesn't freeze here. Not something I'd recommend but for people where I'm from it's pretty normal.

Not really, lot of cars are like the first one having the top coolant mark in the middle of the overflow tank. With a funnel like that you'd only fill it to the top and had to remove quite a bit of coolant to get the level right.

Snowmobiles also have no heaters, aside from Bombardier B series or heated grips/seats. I find I don't ride much when it's below freezing anyway, I'm too scared of falling on ice, then being run over by an F150.
I remember back in the day when me and my buddies had to cover my cars hood with a thick blanket and park it in a wind resistant spot becuse my Waterpump was leaking and i put pure water in the cooling System. Very informative and detailed video. The only thing missing was a caution about Antifreeze and animals who will be poisoned by any spilled if its not cleaned up.
It is terrible in India, where I belong to, as we have 6 SEASONS to play with, with a season called monsoon, the season of rain, between summer and autumn being the longest, spanning from late may to even late September. But this year(2020) it felt like we had only 2 seasons, winter and monsoon as it rains out of literally nowhere an' there are at least 3 days of rain every month(It rained yesterday for the comment on 29.12.2020), anyway, this is one of the factors that gives identity to India and makes its climate interesting
For sure. But even using it on those cars helps get all the air out when it may be trapped because the height of the coolant and the pressure that creates does an amazing job at pushing the air out.
@@chrisfix The only reason I said that was because there are some countries where these sort of parts are hard to come by and due to the COVID epedemic, it is really hard to get tools in to certain countries. (One of them being Norway). I don't want to discourage anyone from working on their coolant system who can't get their hands on some of the products used in the video.
I also have a mk4 golf, how does the air bleeding system work? My antifreeze is about -25c or so right now, i don't expect it to drop under -20c either way. But still a cool feature i didn't know about.
My kids(7 and 4) love it when new ChrisFix videos come out! This one was fun for them- once they got done watching, I took them out to the garage and try a tester out for themselves. They loved it!
And squeeze the radiator hose - either one. If it is soft, go ahead. I skipped that when working on my daughter's Honda. Boiling coolant soaked my sweatshirt and long shirt sleeves, besides dousing my hand. It took me a few seconds to get both sleeves over my hand. It smarted like crazy for a few hours, didn't hurt so much in the morning. A week later all the skin peeled off my hand.
I have a 2009 Chevy Aveo 1.4L LS automatic (odometer: approx. 140k). I take good care of my car & it serves me well. Every time I top up the reservoir to max level, the coolant returns to min level after a few days and stops at that level for years without a leak. Throughout my car's life of 11 years, I only used 2 brands: (PEAK coolant & AC Delco 240k/5 years extra long life coolant) without an issue. During that period, the coolant & reservoir was always clean as I periodically change the coolant. Is there a way to know why the coolant always drops & stops at minimum level even though it wasn't doing that when the car was new? I live in Jordan with temperature typically varies from 3°C to 32°C and is rarely below 0°C or above 35°C. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.
Sounds like some air making it way out of the system, or just normal expansion/contraction of the coolant. Try bleeding the system and see if that makes this go away!
Thanks to you I was able to replace the tie rods on my car by myself and only needed to pay for the parts and pay for the alignment of my wheels. Now I just got done replacing my break pads and rotors also and I pull a compressed piston on my rear wheel and broke the seal. It was a expensive mistake, but I did learn from it. Thank you for you videos
Chris, just saw your video on your RUclips success, Congratulations! Another well done in accounting for the coolant left in the water jacket after a radiator drain. I didn’t learn this technique until I was in New York during an extreme winter, NOT a good time to learn! Another great video & congrats again on your RUclips success, well deserved!!!
Check the maintenance schedule and also compare the color with the OEM coolant for it. If it seems right, passes the hydrometer check, and is still within its life (usually 5 or 10 years now) it's your choice. If it is the wrong color or out of date or messed up you really should. Just being aware gives you the upper hand.

@@goldwolf0606 Haha already seen it, really funny. I actually showed that video and the one about blinker fluid to my friend and he actually believes it, my headlight looked bad on my car so he said that I would need some new blinker fluid and I laughed so hard haha.
Good luck hope it is a Honda so it is easy
I skimmed through thought you were gonna show how to tell the antifreeze hasnt turned acidic eating out heater core/fittings ect . Thats why you change coolant . You add for strength anti freeze/anti boil. Your videos are well done 99.9% of the time haha
you always have the best content, appreciate the effort.
Thanks!
@@chrisfix Just the plain truth. Great skills, tips, videography, links....
This is the best ad ever for that funnel😂
When I saw him use that thing, I thought...”I think I need 3 of those.”
Not really, lot of cars are like the first one having the top coolant mark in the middle of the overflow tank. With a funnel like that you'd only fill it to the top and had to remove quite a bit of coolant to get the level right.
Chris's parent: Hey chris i need my car, im going to run an errand

Yes I know it is driftstangs engine but all the other cars parts were also taken out as seen in the video and I don't think his parents would take the hummer

Oh my gosh I just got to the part with the pipe of wooder, amazing. You might confuse people who dont know you.

Me: **cries in motorcycle**
Edit: did i spell that right?
"on" not "in" motorcycle. Makes a big difference.😂
Snowmobiles also have no heaters, aside from Bombardier B series or heated grips/seats.
I find I don't ride much when it's below freezing anyway, I'm too scared of falling on ice, then being run over by an F150.
You just have to wear more layers and use insulated gloves. Heaters are for the weak. An invigorating ride on a frosty morning makes me feel alive!

I remember back in the day when me and my buddies had to cover my cars hood with a thick blanket and park it in a wind resistant spot becuse my Waterpump was leaking and i put pure water in the cooling System. It was like -10 Celsius and I really was woried that my cars Block would crack,so much so I drove it hard to get it up to temperature and then let it sit thru the night... Remember it to this day, nice Video Chris, keep it up Buddy, can't wait for the Turbo Del-Sol video.😁

"winters right around the corner"
Me living in tropical country :
Bruh what is winter? 🤣🤣
We also have 4 seasons:
Hot
Very Hot
Rainy
Typhoon Season
Rub it in lol
same here lmao
I live in Canada sooo do the math
It is terrible in India, where I belong to, as we have 6 SEASONS to play with, with a season called monsoon, the season of rain, between summer and autumn being the longest, spanning from late may to even late September. But this year(2020) it felt like we had only 2 seasons, winter and monsoon as it rains out of literally nowhere an' there are at least 3 days of rain every month(It rained yesterday for the comment on 29.12.2020), anyway, this is one of the factors that gives identity to India and makes its climate interesting
That was a clever way to calculate how much coolant was needed to achieve 50/50 ratio. Thanks for the video.
There are some cars where a spill funnel isn't necessary. My car has a built in bleeder for the coolant system. That car, being a golf 4.
Eyooo, My dad has a vw golf 4, what year is yours??
I also have a mk4 golf, how does the air bleeding system work?
My antifreeze is about -25c or so right now, i don't expect it to drop under -20c either way.
But still a cool feature i didn't know about.

My kids(7 and 4) love it when new ChrisFix videos come out! This one was fun for them- once they got done watching, I took them out to the garage and try a tester out for themselves. They loved it!
I respect people with old accounts. Yours is 14 years old since 2007. For me, that says a lot about a person.

Tip: Put a rag over the cap when losing.
Thanks for the tip!

@@flagmichael wow

My coolant looks good but now i think i should change it. It hasn't been changed since the last owner owned it over 4 years 🤤
Check the maintenance schedule and also compare the color with the OEM coolant for it. If it seems right, passes the hydrometer check, and is still within its life (usually 5 or 10 years now) it's your choice. If it is the wrong color or out of date or messed up you really should. Just being aware gives you the upper hand.
