There are some great videos of this service on RUclips. This is the most concise in my opinion. Thank you so much. I will be attempting this on my XC70 this weekend. Cheers.

Man, thank you! You make everything looks so easy! You explain so well that even a person with rudimentary technical skills could handle it!

Excellent video. A couple of other considerations/tips for this job.
Volvo reccs replacing the timing belt and acc belts every 80k miles ( you can probably get away with waiting up to 120k). If either has oil on it or have cracks or other signs of wear, then do replace both.
Do a visual inspection of the camshaft seals behind the two cam pullies to identify any oil leaks, and replace them if you notice oil. This will require you to first line up all three timing marks on the crank and cams, scribe a line on the cam pullies and the cams so they can be replaced in the same exact position, and then remove the two pullies. Also mark the position of the VVT hub. Then, using a T-55, remove the oil cap on the hub, then the bolt beneath that, and then remove it to access the camshaft seals. Drill a small hole in each seal and run a screw in to be able to pull the seals out, then replace them by applying a thin coating of oil on the new seals and then press them in. Volvo sells a tool to allow you to press the new seals in to the correct depth. Also inspect the VVT hub bearing to make sure it spins freely and doesn't have too much play in it. If it does, or it's got more than a 160k miles on it, then replace it with a new one.
There are two kinds of VVT hubs; one kind is soring loaded, the other not. If yours is spring loaded, then it is very important to rotate it two pully teeth to properly allow for the spring to tension and time properly. There are videos about how to do this properly on YT.
This may seem like a daunting job, but it's really not all that difficult.

    FYI .
At 26 minutes and 20 seconds (you say it backwards).
The CRANKSHAFT rotates 2 revolutions to the CAMSHAFTS 1. Not the other way around.
Hence, the cam gears are twice the size as the crank gear.
Other than that, VERY GOOD VIDEO!!! Good job...

From what I have heard, the timing marks do NOT equal top dead Centre. It is a point where no piston is at the top of the cylinder at all, because of this you are able to rotate a camshaft 360° without damaging the valves. Hope this helps.

This is a wonderful video. Just wondering if it is totally necessary to remove the harmonic balancer? I've sen other videos where they don't do this during the timing belt change. Any comments are appreciated, thanks.

    Hi.
I've just finished renewal of timming belt, tensioner, hydraulic gizmo and roller. Serp belt.
I've worked on all makes of cars over the last 45 years and I can honestly say this was a pig of a job to do.
As we know cars are not made for home mechanic maintenance these last thirty years.
The main problem on volvo 850 petrol engine is the belt is almost impossible to fit with balancer in place.
It's also impossible to get cam pulleys lined up once the pin is removed from the hydrolastic piston.
They move back one tooth off the mark after two rotations of crank.
Therefore you have to outsmart the car by carefully turning both cam wheels one tooth to the right, towards the front of the car, in order to have all notches lined up after pulling the pin!
This I've found out by bitter experience.
I must say I had the same problem on my mgf after HG renewal last year.
Well, I hope this helps anyone out there facing the same job.
Allow at least six hours to complete the job.
    Great learning curve!!

Be careful guys with the exhaust camshaft pulley with vvt system as in this video, because it can rotate the pulley and it can confuse you with the marks. You believe that all in place and you did not notice that when you take off the belt the vvt system move the polley one or more tooth; here it is the raison because there is a tool that blocked the cams in their opposite sides.
It has happened to me that despite putting in marks before removing the old belt, once I removed it I did not realize that the VVT system moved a single tooth backwards, which in the video does not indicate that this can happen. Sincerely, after the installation and check the marks i had doubts, it seems that it was a tooth deplaced but it was difficult to differentiate because the angle of vision when you do it with the engine in car. In adition, all was in the same place (or i believe) before removeing the old belt.
Well, honestly, I still don't understand what happened, but thank goodness that when starting up I hear noise and stop the engine immediately and I can realize this. I didn't understand anything, the marks were in place, nothing had moved during the belt installation process, the polleys were in the same position before removing the old belt,... but it had and I realized when I took the belt out again that I saw how the pulley moved back a tooth by itself. I had to rotate clockwise this cam one lap until arrive and the correct mark.
In short, guys, be very careful with the vvt system and watch other videos about how the change is made with this system.

Use a solvent to take off the leftover gasket material. Gasoline, acetone or isopropyl alcohol work great to remove that.

8:00 Haynes manual says that "The crankshaft sprocket flange rib should align with the oil pump housing mark". That rib is only visible after you remove the crankshaft pulley. I absolutely can't see the 2 marks that you describe here. I'll try to clean it up a bit better.
