I love how every instructional video of removing the dash are from the angle behind the person giving a great shot of their backs while they do it.
I am so glad you did this video, I just ordered me the Low Profile brackets and ditch light switch from Cali. Cant wait to put it on. Love your vidoes
Thanks Russell!! I’m sorry I was in the way a little one the panel when I popped it off. But it’s super easy
The only channel I need for all my 4Runner install questions! Outstanding, thank you!
Thabk you!!!!!!
Yes, this channel is great! Thanks for the info!
Sweet man. Just ordered my light bar switch. Looking forward to this!
Hope this helped !
Thank you Jon
Referred to your wire connections and tadaahh!! I told myself "Jon you're a genius". Thanks bro!
No worries!!!
Thanks Jon!
Simple and very helpful. Thanks!
You're welcome!
If you are feeding the wire through the small grommet hole at 1:16, I recommend drilling a hole through the grommet and feeding your wire through the grommet. That way you protect your wire from the sharp edges of the fire wall and the hole is more weatherproof.
I agree, you definitely want to run the wire through a grommet. What I have done in the past is to heat up a center punch and drive it through an existing grommet creating a hole just big enough to where you can squeeze your wire through so that it basically seals itself inside the grommet. BTW, Amazon sells a large variety of replacement switches that have custom labels and are LED illuminated.
@@mikeaustin5670 This was just the video I needed, many thanks. I have my ditch lights, and front grill bar running up into a few OEM style aftermarket dash switches. Worked perfectly!
Great vids as always. Super useful
Glad you like them!
Thanks for the wiring diagram.
Nice, great video... much appreciated.
Good to know you can move the aux power up top... Ran into same problem with switch notches and cursed Toyota for a bit. Figured did that to keep assembly all the same but still a little dumb.
Of course!! And yes but annoying for us non average consumers who mess with the cars
I imagine you could use a file to cut your own notch to fit
That light bar is f’n siiiickkk!!!
Auxbeam. Super cheap yet way way functional.
Thank you ✊🏽
Good vid man👍🏼
Thanks man! I appreciate it
The new spot you put the inverter switch were you able to reach up from the bottom where you pop open the panel?
I tried to move mine down but yes they have different notches on the openings.
Thank you
Thanks for the video - it helped a lot with installing the OEM switch.
Does that light bar illuminate the road well?
Yes this one did
Wish you had spent some time on relay wiring and choosing a fuse size. Nice filming and great switch install.
I would leave the grommet in the hold, best to punch a hole in the grommet and feed your wire thru the hole. Without the grommet the wire insulation could get damage causing a short and or a fire.
Good call!
Hey mate I’m looking in to wiring 2 lights with the ARB wiring harness but it shows in diagram to tap a hi beam ? To run this harness is that what you had to tap to ? Or did you tap to any fuses to make sure your switches work when your key is inserted? I’m just getting confused with all these extra wires lol
Haha I was just over there at cali raised! There only 10mi from my house. Those guys over there are super nice Morgan was awesome over there and he has a pretty awesome 4runner him self. Anyways I just ordered sliders from Cali raised there going to be awesome 20% angel with kick out black powder coated I’m excited about it😬
That was awesome man. Most informative install on RUclips for sure. I have a Tacoma but the process I’m sure will be the same. As far as the extra wire from the switch is there somewhere to tuck it or is it just left hanging out.
That extra wire is used to tap into some light wire to keep it illuminated
Hi Jay! That wire should be spliced into a dash light wire in order to have the letters on when dash lights are turned on. I have a video on my channel explaining this on a third gen Tacoma, the video is about wiring a LED light bar, jump to minute 18:00 so you find the OEM parts quick.. it is in Spanish but I think I set up closed captions on English, let me know if you have questions! Good luck!
No worries!!! Thank you!
What would you consider the best budget 40" (or similar) LED light bar?
As others have said, you should NEVER run wiring through a metal hole in your vehicle without bushing the edges of the hole. Some of these holes can be razor sharp. Also, never leave unconnected wires behind the dash without insulating the bare ends.
how do you insulate them?
@@Boom-oq5yj the plastic thingy
Easy, thanks !
You're welcome!
Which wire would you tap into to make the switch work with your dash lights.
I watched this before, just installed the light bar tonight. I have ditch lights waiting to be mounted. Question: are you running two positive leads to the positive terminal of the battery? That’s what I’m seeing. Is it safe to do that? I thought the voltage difference if any, could damage the light that takes the lower load.
I have a Baja light bar and Baja ditch lights and need new bolts for Baja fogs. Lol
So did u just push the rubber grommet back into place in the firewall over the wires?
Did you disconnect light from battery when cutting the wires and replacing the switch? Or was everything still connected when you were replacing the switch?
Did you use an inline fuse and a relay?
Exelente video.
Cuales son las medidas del interruptor?
not sure if you glazed over this or I wasn't paying close enough attention but...does it come with a relay or is the switch itself the relay? And does it come with an inline fuse or does it tap the fuse box?
What about hooking up the other red wide for the dash lights? Where does it go?
Please please do a video on how to wire the switch to stay lit like the OEM switches. Thanks in advance.
Are those RGB ditch lights? I've found some on the retro fit source and i want to know if they will connect to the OEM style switches from Cali raised
The should. The switches are generic to fit multiple applications
Great video! I'm trying to figure out my setup now. have 4 separate lights going on the roof. each is 20W. a harness came with each pair. has a factory switch, and no relay. I want to splice the additional 2 lights to the same harness. The main wire looks 14 gauge, and should handle the 6 amp draw, but the Toyota style switch is only rated for 3 Amps. It sounds like I'll have to add a relay to the harness so the switch doesn't get the full 6 amps, and melt. Do you have relays on your harness? how many amps is your light bar? Have you encountered this issue? Thanks.
The factory harness that I have comes with an in-line fuse so if it gets too much current that will blow before it gets to the switch.
I have mine all set up already just got it today came with it off the lot but it won’t turn on
Hi there from Toronto Canada will the 32 inch light bar fit in a 2017 4Runner limited
Nice video
Please do a review of your rav4 at some point
Thanks
I can definitely do that
What if the baja lights in looking at include a wiring harness with a switch and non-individual wires?
I just cut the switch off that came with my harness and wired it up to the new switch
Nice work!... what color wire is for the dash illumination light on the vehicle side?
Thank you! I am not sure. I did not tap into the vehicle lights
Are these the same switches that fit in the gx460?
hey Jon... i would not recommend the cali-raised switch... it won't depress fully when installed
Tundra is made pretty much the same I have the same switch
Awesome video. Thanks so much for doing. I’m going to do exactly what you did. I do want to wire the lower part of the switch to my running lights, so, it looks cool. Have you don’t this? If you did, which wire did you “tap” into??
I haven’t done it yet. Hesitant to tap into any
You can use an add-a-fuse on the tail fuse if you want something less permanent
Yes that too
Find the fuse box by your parking break and use an add-a-fuse into the fuse that is for your dash lights. Make sure to transfer the fuse you take out and put it into the add-a-fuse. Then when you turn on your headlights, your dash lights will come on and so will the backlight for your OEM switch
Ahhhh, Google. Finally got my switch and bracket from Cali Raised and this is the next thing i see on youtube. Did you ever hook up the 2nd power wire? I was thinking of using a fuse tap.
I didn’t. That may work with the add a fuse
What brand ditch lights?
Bro, you need to get that light to the inside dimmer, you need to connect the negative and positive from another switch to get the right voltage into the switch for the dimming light. Great video!
Thanks! And you mean for it to come on with the dash lights ?
@@TRDJon yeah buddy, I forget which video I watched was the older couple with the res 4runner. I have the bottom lighting using the interior vehicle dimmer. Looks sweet, great video!
@@TRDJon check my videos. I just uploaded the effect
Will do!
Phrank Rizzo I will have to watch. I definitely want the switch to be able to dim with the rest of the lights.
I want to make a distinction and I hope that you would be able to confirm my thoughts. I don't trust my ability enough to splice into the existing vehicle electrical. But this project seems to be completely independent of the vehicles electrical (save the the connection to the battery). Am I on the right path?
Yes correct. Unless you are wanting them to illuminate when you turn on your interior lights. But if not they are completely independent
Hi Jon!!!
Nice video, could you please do a video on how to splice to a dash light wire? I did this on my Tacoma, but I am trying to install it the same on my friend's 4runner, and we can't find a dash light wire.
Thank you!!!
Porroquio did you figure this out by any chance?
I know this is a bit late, but you can tap into the wiper heater button led power cable to get the button leds to come on with the dash lights.
@@kilo6one also late but which wire went to the led? Thanks.
Do you have any videos on how to connect the wires to the switch? I have no electrical experience.
Each switch and wire may be different. I do though have a general wireing video.
i have the same light bar and switch you have but besides the button wires and the light bar wires do i need any additional wires to wire the bar properly?
You shouldn’t
How have they held up? Do you still like them? I like the look, but have seen some vids with them sticking. Like they don't stick out far enough from the trim and get hung up.
I like em but I’d go with the air on board brand if I had to do it again
Having a problem with getting my Rigid D2's wired to that switch
4:41 I have a PRINSU light bar and the wires are blue, black, and white. What are the codes? Blue positive? 🤷
Are you able to turn on the led lights without the key in the ignition? I assume so based on your video.
Yes since they are attached to the battery you can whenever you want
So what brand/kind of harness are you using? Tried to tackle a light bar installation today and the switch and the harness I had we just not working together. The switch itself is just like yours so maybe it was my harness?
Idk what one it was. Whatever came with the light bar.
does the lights on the switches turn on only when turned on, or do they turn on when you turn on headlights also? asking because i just got this setup, am about to install it on my 4runner
You can tap into your vehicle wiring as well to have them on for that
Really appreciate all of your videos! I want to access the blank switch to the lower right of the steering column. Any suggestions?
Just pop out the plastic around the steering wheel on that side
That’s the “Party” mode switch & the standard OEM switches don’t fit
@@TheKPDX wow, good call...didn't realize that
Zachary Starr This USB plug did fit www.amazon.com/Cllena-Charger-Socket-Charge-Toyota/dp/B07FD2Z6GF
Important note - you must pull the surround around the HVAC fan knob on the center stack to be able to remove the right side of the driver knee panel to access the “Party Mode” blank.
Have you tried tapping your switch led to your marker lights? Im talking about the led that will light up your switch when you turn your key to ACC.
So for some reason the pods now are always on. I haven’t tapped the LEDLight bar one on yet.
This is where I'm stuck right now. Mine are always on. Any details?
I can’t remember who commented. But there is a comment on this vid and somebody fixed it
Thanks for the video. Helped a lot. Have you had any issues with your switches sticking? I feel like mine sits too far in the hole and when the switch is pressed it catches on the dash and cant release back out.
I actually have not. I’m sorry!
Same problem. Just sits in a fraction too far to properly work
Same issue. There isn’t enough room for the button to click on and stay on. I took a small piece of wire sheathing and super glued it on each side of the switch body to act as a small spacer. Works like a charm. Good luck guys!
Spoke with Cali raised. They offer a replacement since their is variance in 5th Gen models. There is a diy fix of electrical tape at ridge for possible fix. Will try tomorrow
Matt Dunn thank Matt, good to know. My solution works if the tape doesn’t. Good luck.
Really trying to find a convenient way to tap into the dashboard lights. Wish you had covered that. Those switches are set up for that.
How do you get power to the lights? Did I miss that in the video or was it not included?
I just did the positive to the red of the battery and negative to the negative terminal area on the side of the engine bay. I said it but it was fast.
@@TRDJon Below are the lights that I am going to install. There are only 2 wires (positive and ground). Would this switch still work? I guess I'm just not understanding how its going to get its power without a fuse.
(cartrimhome.com/LED-Front-Bumper-Grille-Replacement-4Runner?tracking=EIGTH97mO3riLbEroxgrInpBxVjBL47HdXcjQJms3oosbvrP6LpZMvm1TYIc0C4u)
How did you move the 400w relay next to the light dimmer? I can’t figure out how to move that part of the dash back without feeing like I’m going to break something.
It felt like it was gonna break but it just pops off
Should have put a small slit in the center of the grommet and fed your wires through it with a heatshrink sleeve so you didn’t have a big hole for possible water intrusion there..
other than that, good video..
Thanks! Ya the grommets is a little to thick for that. I thought of it. Both wires kinda fill it up the hole though.
Blue TRD Jon okay.. didn’t look like it was that thick from the angle you were shooting from..
but good to know..
I guess u should say thick. It has like a thick part in the center that goes into the cab portion of the firewall.
Does Toyota or anyone after market sell this small rubber grommet with a hole in the middle for the firewall? I don’t want my wires rubbing on the sharp edges.
I’m sure autozone or amazon sells some rubber o ring ones for super cheap
would this work the same if i were to add a usb in these spots?
Some usb things come with other options. But should be. Or just to a fuse as well
How did you fit the inverter switch in the top slot since it has different notches?
The spot I put it in the notches lined up
@@TRDJon Does the top panel pop off with a simple tug as well?
I haven’t tried the top portion
Did your switch make the ditch lights only light up amber? Ive been trying for the past couple hours but can only get it to light amber, not the white LED
May need a separate switch for that if it is a dual light
You can finally build the 2019 4Runners on Toyotas website!
You can??????
Yes sir!
Dang that’s crazy. The prices are true. Gotta do another video now for that. Sooner then I thought
Like build a new purchase or build a already bought one? I purchased a 2019 TRD Premium, that would be cool to have them do it
I wanna liked it better if you wired it to your dash lights. Lol trying to figure that part out. 😂
this is running straight to battery? inline fuse?
Yes straight to battery w/ an in-line fuse.
Always need a grommet in the hole. Don’t pull the grommet and leave it out. It’s a water intrusion point and the metal edge will abrade the wires and possibly short out in the future.
It can cause some chaff yes. I’ve wrapped it in electrical tape since this and chaff tape
Cheers to that - PS, thanks for the vid. Saved me a good bit of time doing my own install this last weekend.
No problem!!! Glad it helped.
Great video! I have decided to tackle my light bar today. However, mine didn’t go as easy. Very similar switch and wiring, just can’t get the damn thing to light up. Any ideas?
The switch itself won’t light up ?
Blue TRD Jon After a lot of trouble shooting I found 2 problems. The wires for the plug were somehow backwards, so I was plugging power into ground. Then the switch wouldn’t function and found a burnt patch on the circuit. Time to buy another switch.
Call whoever it was for the switch and let them know. They should send one for drew
Free
Blue TRD Jon I reached out to the company on amazon, so we will see after the holiday weekend. 🍻
Did the switches come with the wiring harness?
Harness sold separately for whatever bar or pod application you need
How did you move the 400w switch to the top row? I could not pinch and pull the top row blank cover off. Thanks.
I was able to pull off the blank cover. Not sure what yours won’t come out
Blue TRD Jon Just found out the upper panel can be pulled out too with a little force. Now the 400w switch is moved to upper row. Looks more organized. Thanks.
No worries!
Im pretty confused right now. So i was able to wire this switch to a light bar. the light bar turns on and off with no problems whatsoever. But when my car is off or i turn the light bar off, the light bar icon on the switch doesnt turn off. Any idea why this would happen? Or is it supposed to be like that? Im worried itll drain the battery
Hey did you ever figure out the problem? Mine is doing the exact same thing. Would appreciate any info you learned!
Question, is your relay button light still on while the car is off?
Yes it was for some reason
@@TRDJon any problem with the light on while the car is off? Like battery drain etc ? My installed and the light still on iam not sure if I need to connected the 7.5 AMP fuse to the wire
Do you leave your 2nd red unuse?
Correct
How did you put the inverter push switch on the top? Thanks,
Just popped out the blank panel up top and moved it up. Just be careful of your fingers
@@TRDJon Thanks John. I thought I would have to remove the top panel. Your channel is very informative and a huge help for all of us that has 4runner. Thanks a lot Man.
No worries! Nah just pull that low panel out carefully and you're good to go. Just watch your hands.
Does the Light bar come with all of the necessary wiring I need to use with the caliraisedled button?
I'm not sure about cali raises light bar. The AUxbeam one I got came with the light harness and everything
@@TRDJon I purchased the same one you have but just had to return it as well as the modular Mount as my 2019 4 Runner is the TRD Premium and the cross bar is not drilled out with a horizontal bar in the middle along with a hose for the bigger radiator because of town package I guess.
Spoke with Rago, sent pictures and they stated as they know, there is no other way than to mount on front of bumper. What a bummer right!!
Hmmmmm that’s strange
Great Vid. Im going to use it for my install. Can someone give an example on what can you possibly use the spare red wire for? Not sure what "running with dash lights mean" , maybe run with fog lights for example? I saw on some other vid that the two of the red wires were spliced together for the connection so this got me confused a little. Great vid , everything close up and no useless talk. Thanks!
Thanks! So when you turn on you lights at night time, the light will come on to the switch as well.
Does the light on the switch light up when you turn your lights on? Not just when you click the switch?
The lights turn on when you press the switch in turn also illuminating the switch itself blue
Blue TRD Jon I’m pretty sure you can run it where the switch itself illuminates when you turn your car lights on.
Oh the car lights? You just tap the extra wire this one has into the dash likes wire. I just didn’t do that.
I did this, ordered it from.cali raised and it doesn't appear to fit correct. When I hit the switch and let go it does not keep the lights on... I have to hold it permanently to keep the ditch lights on. I am really upset with cali raised as all they've told me is it is the correct switch. I am about to initiate a chargeback.
May just be a bad one. Definitely get your money back
That is one dirty engine bay
Yes. It’s definitely since been cleaned ga
How did you connect the wires together?
Butt connectors
How did you get the inverter switch to fit up there?
Just popped it in
My switch light is on always
What is the 1 switch for looks like a widow wiper ?
Windshield heater
@@TRDJon thank you sir, just got my 2014 limited and am pretty new to 4runners
does your harness had a relay? also do you know how to wire the RED2 into the stock harness?
The harness I have does have one yes
@@TRDJon what about the Red2?
Not sure what you mean by that one
TRD JON oh sorry I know you didn’t do the Red2 wire into the main harness to be lit when the key is turned but do you know where that Red2 would wire to do that? Like where into the harness?
I’m not sure. Somewhere into the dash harness to light it up.
Jon, thank you for this video. I just ordered some Cali Raised LED ditch lights and have been afraid of screwing up my 4Runner. Some of us rubes who are new to installing accessory lighting, like me, are ignorant of the basics of wiring them. Your video appears to address those basics. The Cali Raised LED switch installation video answers a few more: ruclips.net/video/W4MXEJpedrM/видео.html. Keep sharing videos!
Will do!!
Hey Jon, Question on doing this 2020 Pro. I had done this on my 15 Tacoma light bar and the push button switch. Is the dash removed the same way on the 2020 4runner. Also did you tap into the fuse box in the engine? When I did my 15 Tacoma I did add a fuse where the push button was located. But watching your install you just wired them to the push button. Any info. Thanks.
Their dash just pulls down basically. And no I have not tapped anything into the fuse box under the hood. I didn’t want potential water getting in there
Wish you would have shown where to wire to illuminate the switches (like the rest of the dashboard)
It’s in the diagram i included in the video if you tap it into the dash lights.
Blue TRD Jon hey I’m a total noob, how do you tap a wire into the dash lights??
I didn’t do it with mine. But you just have to find the hot wire for whatever the dash wire is
Battery won’t die with those two switches staying on all time?
Eventually but mine lasted a week and it was fine
Blue TRD Jon thanks 👍🏽
you should always use electrical tape on ends off wires you're not using . Thanks for the video.
You didnt go into detail on the switch light wires. What's the best way to wire those up without using a fuse tap?
Like lighting up the switch ?
@@TRDJon yep the "red 2" wire that lights up the switch while the car is running
Yea I didn’t do those ones.
Didn’t wanna splice into my stock harness
@@TRDJon yep same here, left them unwired but I dont like how they aren't lit up when they're not on.
Just did my install ditch lights with the oem style switch anybody have problems with the switch clicking once install in the panel like it not sticking out enough for the button to function properly 🤔
I've heard of sticky switches. But not that issue.
@@TRDJon ahh got it figured out the back side of the button had some casting left on it that I had to sand down and remove now the button will depress and works properly other than that the install went great going off your video
So I just installed this switch, not sure why the led on the switch stays on button pressed or not, I'm sure it's not going to drain the battery, running a small led bulb like that but I'd like to figure out why it's constant. Any ideas?
JK I figured it out. Thanks for the video!
How’d you fix it ?? Mine is staying on now.
@@TRDJon the wire from the light bar that you have connected to the red wire on the switch and the wire you have connected to the green wire on the switch need to be swapped at least that's what it was for me.
Huh that’s weird. I will try that!
Erik Lando thank you my man!!!!! just saved me a lot of hassle😭
