Female flowers are shape like peanuts 🥜... male flowers are shape like a bell 🔔 ..

we've had pomegranate trees in our garden all my life...
they have quite an odd growth type... 3-year-old wood usually gives new shoots that flower, so always keep in mind when pruning and always keep the older wood.
younger trees usually drop their entire flower set the first year (tree age 4 years), sometimes even the second year of flowers (tree age 5 years)
i'm not exactly sure, but as far as i know, pomegranate trees have perfect flowers (each flower contains both male and female parts) and for the past 30 years, we've never hand-pollinated out trees.

Just bought my first pomegranate the end of last year. I'm in zone 7b and it's been growing great in this heat we've been having! Thanks for sharing, I'm learning things through you!
It's great because we are growing the same things! Lol

If you have problems pollinating…. Plant some flowers or put flowers in pots near trees to attract bees.

They fruit on new growth each year.

Amazing you have flowers so early, doubt if we'll get flowers here in the UK until late June / early July. Think I'd rather use a paint brush than fingers to pollinate them. I think you are right in your assessment, the earlier flowers are male only, the next flush of flowers have both male and female parts but supposedly still need cross pollinating from other flowers ( maybe like pawpaw the anthers and stamens are ready at different times ).

Pomegranate needs lots of sun and need lots of water until the fruit is almost ripen and be lightly pruned, and space to grow. the pomegranate that you have close to the house doesn't have space to grow doesn't look like he gets a lot of sunshine. They also like to be fertilized. You have to treat them opposite of figs

What kind of fertilizer to you use please.

Not necessarilly. Many varieties of Pomagranite trees are very droubt tolerant and produce bountiful amounts of fruit without people watering them at all. The yard connecting to mine has 2 pomagranite bushes that are fruiting like crazy and there has not been anyone living there in several months. They also are both in shade most of the day so Im not sure where you got that from but these beautiful shrubs are thriving without being cared for by anyone in probably at least a year if not a few years.

Now that you’ve had your trees for a while, which tree has produced the best tasting fruit?

hello just did plant some russian varieties in 7 b , do they need protection during winter the first years like figs ?

I think an anti desiccant will really help. Protection is definitely recommended.

Ross, do your friends grow it in a microclimate or out in the open? I just purchased a Russian pomegranate that is supposed to live here in zone 7a. I have killed too many trying to get one to live through the winter so right now it is in a pot . It had two flowers on the same tip. One fell off and I did the same technique you did to try to pollinate the other flower. So far it is still on the bush.

Against the house or a wall.

If it doesn’t fall off pretty quick it is pollinated and making fruit.

Bees know exactly what to do with them. You just don't have many bees in your area. Its not just about bees though. Theres all kinds of bugs that pollinate. Notice if you have ants all over them. Cover your tree next time if it gets below 25. Always cover them.

Dude those were female flowers because they were already turning to fruit. The thick pomagranite like outer shell of those flowers you first showed the camera. If it wasnt it wouldnt look so much like the fruit lol
