I literally rushed out to a tree nursery after watching this great video, and got myself a Pomegranate Wonderful, about 5 feet tall. Can’t wait to add it to my Mediterranean garden which is being landscaped at this very second!
I open the pomegranates over a bowl of water. The waxy membrane will float and the seeds will sink. Makes separating much easier. Great video! This inspires me to grow my own one day.
I live in nz and the first time I tried this fruit I was flabbergasted , I had know idea how to eat it.I had read about its existence in the bible so stirred my curiosity. To this day I haven't grown one. Now I'm determined to grow one if only for appearances. Thank you.

So I covered it with mulch and uncovered it in the spring. I am very happy to see that it is putting on leaves and growing now. It is a wonderful pomegranate from Stark Brothers Nursery

Best explanation video ever. Loved that you mentioned all the questions I had!!! We got one from a plant store that's about 6 month old and we look forward to what you said!
I have a tree, It was 6" when purchased. I reported it in a larger pot, at the bottom there's bushy stems with leaves and one stem growing now about 5'. It has small leaves but some seem to wilt and fall off of the large stem. Is that OK, or am I doing something wrong? Is to much water causing this, not enough sun. or does it need repotted again into a larger pot? Also to finalize the potting process. what actual size of a pot do I need, and would a certain pot do better than a plastic?
I have a pomegranate tree in my front yard that I grew from a seed. The parent plant was a Wonderful variety. The new plants pomegranates are nearly identical to the parent plant so we got lucky. It took the plant about 4 years to start making fruit, and 6 years to get a high yield of fruit. I've also found cross pollinating varieties gets better yields, as we planted a Wonderful variety in the yard and now when both plants flower we've gotten almost double the amount of pomegranates on the plants, then from the single one I grew from seed originally.
The best way I've found to open pomegranates was actually on a box of them I got from Costco. First you score a ring about 1 inch down from the flower end of the fruit. Next, peel up the edges of the ring you just scored to take the flower end off. This will allow you to see where the membranes separate the clusters of seeds. Then just score down the sides of the pomegranate along those membranes and you can easily break apart the clusters.
In order to encourage fruit set, stop watering the pomegranate tree for a while when the flowers appear until you see small fruits being formed. If you water/overwater during the appearance of the flowers, they will just fall off.
Thanks for the video. It taught me a lot and especially since I'm a new pomegranate tree owner every bit of information counts. Greetings from another person in California.
An awesome very informative knowledgeable video. Just purchased a pomegranate wonderful yesterday and can’t wait to plant outside. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for the video! We inherited a pomegranate tree in our plot of the community garden. I don’t think anyone harvested the fruit as their were dry empty shells everywhere. It’s growing up next to a fence. We will prune is this upcoming winter 👍
You should mention that the tree is a bit thorny and pruning should me done with care. Other than that I would reduce watering before the ripening of the fruit to avoid cracking. In Israel where I live, as in other parts of the middle east and Africa, we have a pest called Deudorix livia- a butterfly that lays eggs in the fruit and ruins it; we need to cover the fruits with paper bags to prevent it if we don't want to spray. You guys in California are lucky.
Nancy, California doesn't have the abundance of insects like Florida, or the humid east coast, in general. I grew up in New Jersey, "the garden state". Now in sunny San Diego for over 31 years. The drier climate isn't as bug friendly as back east with the dreadful humidity.
Thanks for a great video. I live in La Habra which is only about 20 miles from Irvine. I have 4 pomegranate trees (bushes really) in the Wonderful variety that I am growing agains a fence. I tie them to the fence in a kind of espalier treatment. The plants are about 3 years old now and this year I am getting maybe about 20 fruit from all the plants. They are still rather young. I have them behind some peach and apricot trees so while they get direct sun in midday the get partial or filtered sun in the later afternoon. I am a little concerned that they get enough sunlight but so far the fruit seem to be doing well but the ones in the sun get more red in color while those with more shade seem to be more blushed with pink and red. When I open them up the seeds are not dark red but also blushed with pink. They are amazingly SWEET and delicious.! I take out the seeds and put them in a bowl in the refrigerator and they make a sweet and juicy snack. I do have to fight the squirrels and opossum for them. I lost six last night to these little critters. They hollowed out the fruit leaving only the leathery shells behind. I am treating the plants with a natural animal repellant to ward them off. Any other advice to dealing with these critters is much appreciated.
Best technique I have found was here on RUclips. Remove flower end & score fruit into about six petals. Slightly separate petals, hold flower side down in one hand and use heavy spoon in other hand to tap the bottom end. its amazing! Seeds tumble right out.
I love your videos, it's so great to see the progression. I'm in zone 10A, so I hope this variety works for me, too! I was thinking about adding a pomegranate to our yard, and this gives me the courage to do so. We used to have a huge tree in the central valley where i grew up. I remember just being outside all day and sucking seeds and spitting them out! (: I like to hit the sections on the back with a spoon, and they fall right out!
@angelicah01 Your tree needs sunny place, also improve soil around the tree. For example, I add chicken manure several times during the spring and summer, and also water with infusion of mowed weeds.
I also live in Atlanta, and I have 5 pomegranate trees. Two Wonderfuls, a Salavatsky, Phil’s Sweet, and a Crimson Red. The last three are Russian variety pomegranates I bought from Edible Landscaping in Virginia. Not many people know there are many varieties of pomegranates from southern Russia that are more cold hardy and produce really tasty fruit.
I live in South Texas. I never fertilize my Wonderful pomegranate, nor do I water it except when there hasn't been rain in a long time. The largest harvest I got was 100 fruit.
I am in Huntsville and for the first time my tree has flowers. They've all fallen off though so I doubt I'll see any fruit.I didn't even know what it was. Do you water yours? I thought it was a Youpon which we sadly have a lot of so I've never watered it.
Thank you for the great video. I planted two Parfianka trees in 2020 in OK, zone 7b. They are in full sun and are doing great! No flowers or fruit yet.
I have a ‘Parfianka’ pomegranate I planted back in the summer and I can’t wait to get some fruits off it this year! It seems to me that if you have a decent layer of organic mulch around the tree that watering 2-3 times per week should be a little excessive even in the hottest, driest times of year.
California Gardening I’ll bet it needs watering 2-3 times per week at least in a container - should do great though. I got it because the Parfianka is supposed to be the best tasting variety for fresh eating.
@@richardbarry04553 I recently planting parfianka but the leaves are turning yello and the plant does not look happy. The stem is green though. I am new to garnering. Please share your thought. Thank you for your time!!
Thank you for a comprehensive guide to growing these trees. Now I know why my 10 yr. old trees don't bear fruits in Austin, TX. Not enough chilling hours and perhaps not properly fertilized....
There are many varieties of pomegranate that does not require chill hours to set flowers/fruits. Look at varieties from South India(tropical varieties).
Best method I found: roll the pomegranate to break the membranes, then score the Shell and separate in half. Now hit it with the back of a wooden spoon and the seeds all come out very clean and very easy.
I do grow mine from seed. I did from my mom's plant. So, I was successful at growing them and getting really big red fruits. I did this four times and it worked. I have no idea why.
My mom has two pomegranate trees. Her seedlings have sprouted lots of baby trees. I've collected 2 dozen over the years that have grown into producing trees with very large juicy pomegranates. Many were gifted to friends. I don't know why they did so well, since genes can be like a roll of the dice. But, the fruit has been satisfactory.
He didn’t say that you couldn’t grow them from seeds, he just said that he wouldn’t suggest it because you never know what kind of fruit (pomegranate)you’re going to end up with. Meaning, growers will pollinate different varieties together to end up with a certain variety that perhaps produces larger fruit or sweeter fruit. He has the variety called Wonderful. If he were to grow fruit from that plant he would not get the same pomegranate as Wonderful

I have a ‘Parfianka’ pomegranate I planted back in the summer and I can’t wait to get some fruits off it this year! It seems to me that if you have a decent layer of organic mulch around the tree that watering 2-3 times per week should be a little excessive even in the hottest, driest times of year.
I am growing the Parfinaka in a container this year. Excited to see the results!
Thank you for your time!!
such beautiful abundance from your garden. thanks for producing these videos.
I have no idea why.
truvelocity do you have other ones growing close by? cross pollination helps
But, the fruit has been satisfactory.
truvelocity do you sell pomegranet tree or seeds ? wish i could grow mine too.
If he were to grow fruit from that plant he would not get the same pomegranate as Wonderful
it is easy as hell to grow them from seed
Shalom! Thank you for sharing your beautiful pomegranate fruit tree.
Blessings to you and yours!
Wow incredible video , I too have a wonderful pomegranate tree.
