    My grandparents had avacado trees in San Diego. She would pick lots of fruit, wrap them in newspaper or tissue paper and stack them in lug boxes and stack them in a very dark closet in her house and she would pull out a few at a time and set them in her window to ripen. She had avacados all year. Sue

    I grew up in San Diego and our avocado tree was HUGE. It was a Haas for sure. One year it would produce a small amount of fruit...next year it would produce so much we were giving them away by the paperbag full. I’m talking large paper bags from Food Basket.
    Nobody in our neighborhood lacked avocados for guacamole.

    I went to an avocado festival 2 years ago and now I have a beautiful tree from a mega avocado, seed was big as my palm, it’s about 2 1/2 feet tall now. Toothpicks and water is all you need plus TLC 😉 Fruit or no fruit I’m just stoked that I have a beautiful tree.

  • @MrThedocholiday
    @MrThedocholiday 9 лет назад +358

    I started my tree with toothpicks from a pit. Now it's 5+ years old, twenty feet tall, loaded with blossoms & recently harvested of about 50 delicious avocados from last year. It can be done. You can do it too. Just water the daylights out of them & protect them from dehydration from various sources.

    • @juanluisnieto7540
      @juanluisnieto7540 9 лет назад +10

      I was told that when you grown them from a seed they don't produce fruit and they need to be implanted a branch from another tree that give fruit.?? Please advice.

    • @MrThedocholiday
      @MrThedocholiday 9 лет назад +81

      Juan Luis Nieto I was told the same thing by many so-called experts. They were wrong. It depends on the seed & how fast it grows. I start multiple pits in water cups with toothpicks & the ones that sprout & root quickly are the ones I plant into pots. The fastest growing seedlings are the most likely to produce fruit the fastest. I have a six year old tree grown from a pit that was very fast growing from the beginning. This will be the third year it blossomed & the second year it is producing. Last year I got about 50 large delicious fruit from it. This year it has ten times the number of fruit growing on it. This fall I should get somewhere between 100 & 300 delicious large avocados on a six year old tree grown from a pit. I think the biggest challenge is keeping them from getting dehydrated when they are young. You need to keep them out of direct sunlight & wind for long periods of time until they are old enough to endure it & keep them well watered in porous soil.

      ***** Hello Duster Dan, May I ask what climate you live in? I live in Southern Ca. Riverside. Also, what kind of avocado did you use.
      Thanks.

    • @MrThedocholiday
      @MrThedocholiday 9 лет назад +37

      teamdicky91 Riverside is perfect for avocados, but they will need a little more water than they would in the tropics or down near San Diego because Riverside is dryer & hotter. I've been using what I believe to be a native fruit that resembles a Pinkerton. Just remember if there's two things I would advise, 1. There is no such thing as over watering avocado trees in a desert like Riverside. 2. You can grow quality fruit bearing trees from a pit if you select fast growing seedlings & water them well. I'm convinced the reason why so many have issues growing good fruit bearing trees from a pit is because they under water them & they don't throw away the slow growing seedling & move on until they find fast growing seedlings. If a pit is not showing signs of enthusiasm, throw it away & start new ones until you find the fast growers. Then, water them well & get-em in the ground quickly after they root. Keep them in the shade until about 1 year old & keep them watered well. Riverside has the perfect soil for this.

    I am a commercial Avocado grower with over 7000 GEM trees in southern California. I agree with pretty much everything you say on your video, except for one thing. You should not harvest GEM avocados until they have sufficient oil content. This we find, in Southern California, happens by late February. This will give you the best quality fruit. Also the brown bruise shown on the young fruit is caused by sunburn, something rare on a GEM as they set their fruit inside the canopy for the most part..

    Interesting. I am at Dehradun in North India. I brought several seeds from Assam and grew them into trees that started fruiting after 8 years. I believe it is Fuerte, 300 to 500 gms. Flowers in
    Dec and ready by end Jul but best tasting after rains subside in end August.
    Surprisingly, one tree is flowering twice a year, in Sep n Dec for the last 2 years.
    Am introducing Booth and Hass, though from seed. Hope to procure grafted Hass this season.

      Hi Mark from @selfsufficientme
      Water quality alone has a huge impact on avocados.
      Our water, even straight from the tap, is not good enough for them. The require low EC (salts) and low chloride content.
      Hopefully mixing 5% charcoal into the growing media makes a difference, otherwise I’ll need filtered or rain water just for it.

    Beautiful and easy to understand and follow. I prefer the GEM avocado because it short and bears fruit that can be harvested 6-7 months old. They turn burgundy and ready to eat in time. Besides, the seed is smaller than others that are big and eat up the space for its flesh. Thank you very much.

    When the Avocado tree drops its leaves......leave them at the base of the tree and do not move or rake them away. The Avocado tree has many, many sub surface roots which depend on those fallen leaves for shade and moisture. Our property has 5 large Hass avocado trees and thrive due to leaving those leaves around its bases (trunk). You may, also, spray paint (water based white paint) your trees (and its trunk) to reflect the sun rays which harm the green limbs of your Avocado trees which should stay green and NOT turn brown from too much sun exposure. Nice video!

    Nice video, thanks for the advice; maybe i'll buy a grafted tree at some point. I've had some Florida avocado seeds already sprouting inside the fruit. I love that kind of life force. I planted one or two like that and they grow so fast and willingly - I like to see what happens. There is one that I started from a sprouting seed less than two years ago, which is already bigger than a variety I bought almost three years ago. I'm very curious how the fruit will come out. I've grafted some lemon trees, but I have half a dozen avos in my yard that grew from composted seeds! Too fun. I also have a mango growing from a seed which dropped from the mother tree.

    Nice video! Thank You. My favorite ways to eat avocado...
    1) with Broiled fish with a coconut milk and coriander powder sauce, a cherry-mango-red chili-cilantro salsa, black Japonica rice cooked in coconut milk or coconut water and avocado (Great Meal).
    2) Guacamole, tacos and any Mexican application, like a seafood coctel or ceviche.
    3) Blended with half a banana, frozen limeade and a touch of rice milk or coconut milk for a creamy drinkable texture (this is a great drink when you are sick).
    4) On buttery toasted white bread or rye bread, or a croissant with smoked or honey turkey, tomato, onion, mayonnaise, black pepper, sea salt...sandwich, which is great with crunchy lower fat potato chips, like Krunchers, especially the Jalapeno flavored. Adding crisp bacon to this sandwich only makes it more delicious!
    5) With tropical fruits for breakfast or as a light lunch (fruits like mango, papaya, sapote, cherimoya, red banana, pineapple, dragonfruit, carambola, jackfruit, blackberries, mulberries, grapefruit, mandarins, oranges, limes and crystallized ginger). I try for a mix of buttery, creamy, acidic, sweet, unexpected in about 7 fruits on a tray with some coconut rice. It is an excellent meal.
    6) Just a simple avocado with salt and pepper, with well heated corn tortillas that have been lightly buttered and salted with hot decaf vanilla or vanilla-cocoa coffee.
    7) If well-ripe, I love to mash into a cream and use them to slather all over my body immediately after a warm shower, to keep my skin very soft and youthful. Great for hair too. Adding vanilla bean paste or mashed ginger to the avocado is really good too, and nicely scented.

      +California Gardening bro if the seed takes 15 years to produce then how do the people that sell the parent do wait 15 years

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  8 лет назад +2

      +josh rojas Good question! The people that sell trees use a rootstock (base tree) and then use a graft (which is a branch or bud from a mature tree) which then produces fruit. A lot of nurseries grow root stocks just for this purpose. They are not the real fruit tree but in the same family. Another example is that orange trees and lime trees are grafted on to citron (a citrus base plant) rootstock. A lime seed takes several years but the grafted tree bears fruits immediately. That is why in nurseries/garden stores you see small plants in pots but still bearing fruit. Hope that explains it!

I'm thinking of cutting it way back to the rootstock and rather than getting rid of the whole tree, I will graft one of our favourites here, a Golden Queen on to this rootstock. I know the rootstock isn't dead as it has lots of shoots coming growing from it.

    Yes, sometimes pit grown trees take a while to bear & the fruit may not be very good, but not all seeds or trees are the same. I have a five year old pit grown Avocado tree that is almost twenty feet tall, producing excellent fruit & loaded with thousands of blossoms. The very first year that it produced (2014) I got about fifty delicious fruit off the tree & it was only five years old at the time of that first crop. This spring it will be six years old & working on it's second crop ever. I have another healthy grafted tree purchased from a nursery that could never keep up with my pit grown tree. The pit grown tree is thirty times the size of the nursery bought tree & has thousands more blossoms on it. Yet the pit grown tree is only three years older than the nursery bought tree. Besides that I really liked your video & it was very informative. Beautiful tree by the way.

    I've watching videos on how to increase yield from my dwarf avocado tree. We've had it about seven years but typically only get about 7 or 8 fruit that grow to maturity. In April we get a lot of fruit buds, but most end up on the ground. Was wondering what I might do to see that those buds that end up on the ground remain on the tree to maturity. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    We live in an apartment but hope to purchase a house in the next year. Til then, I do a LOT of container gardening. Do you think this would be doable at all in a large container?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 лет назад +4

      ellepwnzstevedaily Absolutely doable in a large container. Dwarf trees do grow well in containers. However you would need to choose a large one - like a half whiskey barrel or one of the larger ones. If you have a Costco near your place, they sell the large containers for quite cheap. Hope that helps!

    6:08 I’m growing a hass variety grafted, from the store, is giving some avocados after three years but the tree is small (5’ ft) and is like 5 years old now. Last year bought another “Pinkerton”, this year had flowers but is it a small tree like 3’ ft so may not give any fruit yet. I have three more from seeds, one of them is flowering this year, (10 years old, 9’ ft), the other two from seeds are in pots, around two year old and 4K ft.
    I’m a avocado lover 😍, your trees are beautiful! My daughters love avocado toast, I like avocado cupcakes, salad whit avocados and guacamole, my husband loves avocado tacos (corn tortilla, avocado and salt) very simple 😄

    I have 3 1- is in my back yard. it's 4 years old. Since 3 years old it started to give fruits but last summer it gave so much that I had to give then to everybody that I could find. This one is very sweat. I took one of the seeds and grow another one.The third one was a different type of avocado that a friend gave me to see if I like it so I could plant the seeds and I loved it because this one is buttery. In July they will be 1 years old but they are pretty big. I keep cutting them so they can through side shoot. I grow them in compost and from one seed, they gave 2 plants. I'm wondering can I grow them in pots and will they give fruits?

    I just planted my Gem avocado tree from Brokaw nursery on Dusa rootstock. I have four other trees a Reed, a Lamb Hass, and a Sir Prize as well as a multi grafted tree which includes; fuerte, Mexicola and Hass.
    We like to eat avocados directly with a spoon shaking a little salt on it, also really enjoy avocados on sandwiches and in salads.

    My friend bought a Hass from Home Depot 2 years ago. It was two and a half feet tall.It is around 3 feet tall now. This March or early April it had blossoms. Four Avacados formed on the tree. The old leaves fell off and the tip of branches produced new leàve but smaller than originall leaves. The three Avacados are growing. Of the four Avacados one disappeared. The problem is. The leaves are starting to be covered with small brown dots on top of leaves. Bottom of leave normal and no holes. Some An insecticide that covers everything was used but did nothing. I also noticed the trunk was turning light green. I fear the tree is dying. They also have some tress e years old grow from seed that are lush and robust. They were the first to get these brown spots. Does anyone know what is causing the brown dots that cover the whole leaf. I have never seen this before. The plants from seeds still have dark green trunks and trees are growing with new leaves. It is the Hass from the Nursery that looks like it is dieing. they all have been given Dr. earth Organic fertilizer and organic leaf spray in the past.. would appreciate any information to why this is happening and what to do. The trees were so healthy until recently. I can't believe this happened ☹️

    I make a dip for my avocado. I use Katsup, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Slice in half, remove the pit and fill the empty avocado bowl and start scooping mouthful after tasty mouthful. Or you could slice the fruit and plate with dipping sauce on the side.
