I've put 20 meters mulch around my suburban garden in this last year. I started with nothing but thick clay and weeds. I have planted about 50 fruit trees and shrubs in my 900sm block. I'm about to order another 5 meters and spread that. Also get horse poo from local farmer. My plants here are flourishing, can't wait for another few years for when they really start establishing and producing. Every single plant ive planted produces food, for either us or the bees. I'm in subtropical qld Australia. Wish i had acres to work with but you do what you can with what youve got.
Thanks for the advice man. Keep the videos coming. I put 5 meters of mulch around the garden last week - next step I'll get the seasol and chook pellets happening.
Great tips, thank you! I’ve wanted an avocado for a while but have hesitated until I decide where to plant it. Your video is encouraging me to buy one, knowing I can keep it potted until it strengthens. Do you have a recommendation for the size pot to keep it in for that time?
We are in nowra nsw and have two dewarf avocado trees (a&b) In large pots they are nearly 2 years old, our backyard is very flat with lots of clay we have raised veggie gardens our first avocado that we planted a few years ago in the ground died from poor drainage! I was wondering if we can continue to grow them in large pots?
I suggest making a big mound. At least a metre high. You can grow in a pot but it will be hard work. Don't forget to mulch. Good luck and thanks for supporting my channel.
Hi, so if possums are eating the tops of the trees would that be enough to set them back as well. Also what happens with the Avocado if you do prune is it only a set back or will it affect it setting fruit all it’s life. Thank you I love watching.
Hi Peta, it could set it back if they eat to much. It will eventually fruit but if you want it to fruit quickly don't prune until you get your 1st fruit.
Hey mate I’m from Melbourne aswell. Just bought an avocado tree from Bunnings. It’s about 4 ft. Not sure how long it’s been alive for? I literally just planted it yesterday in soil. Not sure if it’s gonna survive. Hopefully it does. Do you reckon it’s big enough to survive, also how could I protect it from frost of sunburn now that it’s planted? Thanks mate
G'day mate, well last year I bought a cheap beach umbrella from Bunnings and used it to protect it from the sun. It worked. But if the wind picks up your in trouble.good luck mate. And thanks for tuning in.
Probably a bit late for you but maybe other people might find this useful- I got 2m tall star pickets and drove them in to the ground about meter diameter around my just planted avo tree and used it to secure a 40% shade cloth over the little tree. Also was good for frost protection.
How often does the tree lose their leaves? I’ve only had my tree in ground for about a year and half, and the leaves will occasionally turn yellow and drop off. Doesn’t seem like it’s dying, but definitely haven’t grown much bigger. Also, my tree is still small, would it be too late to raise it from the ground? I feel like it sunk down a couple inches into the ground since. Thank you!!
@@frasercoastfoodforest3092 Thanks for the reply! I really hope so too! I have 2 trees, my smaller Bacon one is doing better. Bigger leaves, and it's still in the pot. My in-ground Hass tree looks skinny. Hopefully It'll thrive by this Summer.
Great video mate, any particular reason you recommend to buy a grafted one ? I had 2 avecado seeds sitting in water for a mobth (from the hass avo fruit I bough from coles), had roots for a while and I can see it has sprouted and 1st leave is about to appear, was hoping to move it into pot very soon.
G'day mate. Thanks for watching my video. The avocado are not true to type. I've made some videos explaining that, it will make more sense on the vid. Thanks again mate and good luck.
Growing a seed for fun or to graft is usually the only reason. Takes to long to fruit then you don't know what type you'll end up with. A grafted tree will fruit in like 3-4years and you know what kind it is..
Thanks for the advice once again mate. I'm in Perth and lucky to have sandy well draining soil. Planted a Hass and a Bacon recently. Been following your advice. The growth my avocado trees have had after your tips have been amazing! One question, do you struggle with fruit flys or any bugs trying to eat your avocados? All my fruit trees get attacked and worried this will happen to my avocados when they one day fruit. Anything you recommend to keep fruit flys and bugs away? Cheers!
Perfect. I'd use that combination every 2 months plus some organic chicken poo pellets or dynamic lifter. Plus lots and lots of mulch. And I mean lots, the best mulch is straight from arborists. Check out my video on mulch and MYCELIUM.
Organic Growing Melbourne no worries mate. Just curious about those pots you have around the trees. So is the bottom just taken out and it’s just around the edges of the trunk just to stop the mulch hitting the trunk etc?
I was told fuerte may not even produce fruit even when grafted, odd trees they are. Mines just kicked into gear with some healthy new growth. Wonder if there’s any tips to encourage them to flower
It very hard to tell without actually seeing it. I have several videos dedicated to my avocados. It my help you in getting it healthy and looking amazing.
Thanks for the growing tips. Was your Hass grown from seed or a purchased grafted tree? And how much sunlight hours do your avos get each day? Great local Melbourne gardening channel. Exactly what us fellow Melbournian newbie gardeners need 😊
G'day Marj, the big avocado with fruit is a grafted variety from a nursery, I have 3 other varieties that are grafted. The rest are seedling I will use as root stock. When young I protected from frost and extreme heat fro the 1st 2 years. Now they get all day sun. The more you care for your avocado the more it can handle frost and heat. My hass can now handle frost and the heat with no damage at all. Thanks for watching my videos.
Excellent video. We get mild frosts in rural SA and I have lost other trees in the past. I will be following your tips and putting my 2 avocados in posts now for the first 2 years. Great idea! It also solved my problem of not knowing where to plant them…I have 100acres but not sure where so now I can think about that for 2 years 😂. Did you know if you plant an avocado wishing 8 meters of a gum tree it will die. Interesting trees aren’t they?
The bacon you said that died, was it on a raised bed like the rest of your avocados? I have clay soil too n am worried what happened to your bacon will happen to mine.
No it wasn't raised. It was a combination of frost and heat. I put it in the ground as soon as I bought it not knowing back then it needs protection for the 1st 2 years. The hass got lucky and survived.

Good point. I find it hard to pull out a tree, or when one dies. They do look amazing.
How often do u water mature tree? Just bought house with big 20 year old avocado tree in back yard in Melbourne
Should do fine on its own. If you get some really hot days our it gets really dry I'd give it a water. Thanks for watching.
