Just to let you know, Bernard Cribbins filmed his one and only scene literally days before he took very ill. He died on July 27th 2022 aged 93. RTD said they had plans for more from him, including scripts written to be featured more in the specials, but his health took a turn for the worse just days after filming that scene with David and Catherine.
They did film that scene with Bernard Cribbins before he passed away. He was supposed to be in the next special as well and he was there for the table reads but they weren't able to film any more other than this one scene. At least we got this one scene instead of him dying off screen
Really? I feel like we had more scenes with him filmed. The news about his death came after they stopped filming as well. Did they mention it in behind the scenes?
@@mjm3091 he was in hospital before he died and they were still filming after he passed away
@@mjm3091 yes, RTD confirmed this is the only scene he could film
@@mjm3091 RTD mentions it in the behind-the-scenes on RUclips, but even though he was still alive when they filmed Ep 3, he was in declining health, and I'd imagine it was just too much for him to manage at that point. It's possible they filmed some his scenes before he had to drop out, at which point their only choice was to cut him from Ep 3 entirely.
@@mjm3091he got too ill to continue filming unfortunately
Another phrase to add to my creepy New Who collection.
"Are you my Mummy?"
"Who turned out the lights?"
"My arms are too long."
Hey who turned out the lights?

They filmed “wild blue yonder” in July 2022. Bernard Cribbins passed July 27 2022.
Also Georgia (David’s wife and his doctor’s daughter as well as the 5th doctor’s actual daughter) tweeted when Cribbins passed that they had named two of their children in honor of him. One of their sons is named Wilfred.
That is a beautiful tribute.
Bernard passed away while the specials were being filmed, and the scene at the end was filmed earlier in the production so he completed it.
Want to really blow your mind about how long they've been filming? The next Doctor recently started filming their SECOND season. And we've not even met them yet.
The episode Eric is thinking of is 'The Doctor's Wife', it wasn't a ship it was a planet and it wasn't at the edge of the universe it was;
Smith: "Imagine a great big soap bubble with one of those tiny little bubbles on the outside."
Darvill: "Okay."
Smith: "Well it's nothing like that."
Gillan: "So we’re in a tiny bubble universe sticking to the side of the bigger bubble universe?"
Smith: "Yeah. No! But if it helps, yes."
I love the way Smith would just pivot mid sentence to make his friends feel better.
I thought he was talking about Utopia
@@jhuido9594 No, Eric said he remembers it was called house or home.
House is the sentient planet outside the universe that put's the TARDIS's consciousness into Idris and puts his own into the TARDIS.
House: "Fear me, I've killed hundreds of Timelords."
Doctor: "Fear me, I killed them all!"
@@jollybodger it bothers me so much that the Doctor actually says "I killed all of them" instead of "I killed them all," because the latter just sounds so much snappier
Yes! The way they talked to each other, "Sexy" and he was embarrassed. Great episode!
Eric and Calvin were 100% right with Bernard Cribbins. It was him. I have no idea how Aaron and Melanie thought it was fake
it was 2 weeks before he passed
Melanie didn't think it was fake. Just the editing.
I think it was just because Aaron knew he'd passed last year, he didn't think the episode had been filmed that far back.
@@erg1947yeah s lot of American shows seem to be filmed real close to the air date from what I can tell.
@@markc4008 even Doctor Who usually was in the past. They're unusually far behead now because RTD hated how tight deadlines got the first time he was showrunner.
That actually really was Bernard Cribbins appearing as Wilfred for the last time. I was shell-shocked watching when he showed up too, I really will miss him as my favourite companion. RIP.
They filmed the scenes in Camden in May 2022, Bernard Cribbins passed away in July 2022. They managed to film that one scene with him before that, and they did have more planned for him which sadly had to be scrapped as a result.
Meeting they really probably going to say that UNIT got him to safety off camera
@@Artisan1979 I know they keep putting that scene of Donna holding his hat into trailers, so I guess that’s going to be the shot that implies he’s with her just off screen and she’ll maybe take him to safety while the Doctor does something else, perhaps during his first encounter with the Toymaker.
"That must have been a fig that fell on his head."
"Slap him"
The thing that Eric was talking about with house was a pocket universe. And that was the doctor's wife which was written by none other than prolific writer Neil Gaiman. Aka the episode where the Tardis becomes a full human
i always forget how americans pronounce bernard hahaha. i’m not really sure what melanie is referring to with it feeling ‘off’ because he filmed everything he needed to for that day. if anything was ‘off’ it would just be an editing issue. as others have said, bernard was supposed to film a few more scenes (for ep 3 possibly) but unfortunately he passed before they could start filming again. it’s sad really because from russell’s account on instagram and the small interview with him on ‘unleashed’, he seemed relatively healthy and energetic for a 93 year old. he loved the show so much and part of me feels like he was holding on to be part of it one last time
Everything after the ship felt "off" to me at first but that was only because I got used to the greenscreen for the hallways.
There’s a great behind the scenes video on their offical channels showing how they did the multiple Tennant’s and Tates’, along with a thread on Twitter from the director. They used two stand in double actors for them, and a lot of hidden transitions and clever editing to smoothly hide them jumps between doubles and actual actors
There’s some footage of Tennant being introduced to the long arm prosthetics for the first time and trying them out that is fun to see. 😊
I've been checking the channel non-stop since Monday waiting for this. I'm so excited to see the four of them to see it!
The entity known as House was in S6E4 "The Doctor's Wife" - voiced by Michael Sheen. It was set "outside of the universe" not at the end of it, but I believe that's the character you were remembering.
RIP Bernard Cribbins. That's the only scene he was able to film before passing. I bawled like a baby and still do. Love that man.
I wept!!
Ever since Aaron has been doing live Doctor Who reactions he's basically just been trolling the others and I love it.
In terms of time, it's interesting to consider David filmed this around the same time as Good Omens 2. It was that long ago, so we were graced with Bernard before he passed. May he rest in peace.
Bernard R.I.P was supposed to be in next episode as well but died before it could be filmed! I have no idea what the Melanie is talking about! it was filmed while he was alive he did a full table read which you can see in the Doctor Who extra show!
It was probably just the shock that made her think it looked off.
They filmed these specials in June - July 2022, before Bernard Cribbins died (he passed on the 27th of July 2022), resulting in this being his final role ever, RTD say he wanted to film more but they just couldn't due to Cribbins age (he was 93 at time of filming).
this was filmed 2 months before he passed so He was able to film everything for this scene. I knew he’d be in it because I remember seeing the leaked photos of him on set but he was such a treasure. RIP Bernard
I'm surprised they didn't die of pure disbelief when Wilf showed-up
Reel Rejects reaction to that scene is gold
Ngl the fact they presumed it was a deep fake is a bit bizarre and a telling reminder of what the industry is atm
Yeah that depressed me...
@@bradleyhowell2898 I don't know about all that. One thing to remember is they actively avoid news. I think they assumed (fairly too) these specials were filmed in the last year and don't realize that these specials were actively being filmed a year and a half ago. That's why a lot of people were surprised that they weren't spoiled about Tennant's return because there was a lot of set photos going around.
the bbc defended jimmy saville for years@@bradleyhowell2898
@@NONAME-qf6gjyeah exactly. they aren’t the first reactors to think it could be fake, and i don’t blame them for thinking it initially because of things like fast & furious and star wars using it. It does make me sad about the landscape of the entertainment industry. This is exactly what all the strikes were fighting, but it’s a bbc show so it’s not really affected by the strikes
Their perceptions have been warped by the fake Luke in the Mandalorian.
That scene was filmed before he passed and is exactly as the scene always was intended. Whatever you think was off is just your expectation that something is off. They did always know they'd have him for a limited amount because he was of course old and not as healthy as he used to be.
Bernard Cribbins finished filming his scenes before he passed away. It wasn't CGI or a different actor portraying Cribbins and his role.
I knew Bernard had done some filming before he died (they filmed SO early...it was before Jodie regerated so I knew Tennant was coming back but I had no idea it was going to be as the new 14th Doctor. I knew they were for the anniversary so remember being like "these episodes aren't gonna be on for AGES this is mad") but I expected him to show up ep 3 so when he popped up I was nOT EMOTIONALLY PREPARED! I think yes they had planned a little more but unfortunately he was too unwell. So so happy we got this moment of him seeing the Doctor again at the very least. Must be quite strange for his family to see him again almost 18 months after his death. But hopefully it is heartwarming that so many of us were so happy to see him.
The trailer that aired right after Whittaker left showed they were already working on this last year
Unfortunately this was Bernard Cribbins' final appearance as Wilf 😢 - Russell said on the behind the scenes of this episode that he was too sick to complete any of the other scenes they had planned...What a man - RIP ❤
Spoilers.
@@flaggerify ?? You cant spoil someone passing away??
Someone dying is not spoilers, what are you talking about?@@flaggerify
Eric is referring to "The Doctors Wife" and the planet they were on that was outside the universe was called House.
They were filming all three specials at the same time, so they had to have started filming a while back. If they knew he was dying, they coukd have filmed that segment early.
Man, Arron really underestimates when Doctor Who films. They film really early to the point where they actually already filmed all of next season/series and are currently filming the one after!
16:05 Mark! Hi there! 👋 Melanie saying "Who's who?" is funny! Here's why! Once upon a time "DC" published their "Who's Who in the DC Universe" and now just imagine a "Who's Who in the Doctor Who Universe" and it being a book about those that have played the titular character! 😮
PS: Oh yeah! There was the aforementioned comic book collection version. But there was also an RPG supplement version with all of their statistics. Plus, a trading card version, but not as detailed. 😎👍
Edit: For the "DC" RPG not the "Doctor Who" RPG!
I legitimately cried when Bernard Cribbins showed up. Had no idea he was able to film anything for this before he passed.
When I saw Bernard Cribbins, I was so happy! I waved my hands in the air saying 'Its them aliens', and then I headbutted a ball across the room. RIP you legend
I love how this episode brings up an old villain, the imitators are said to be the same thing that was in the S4E10 episode on the planet Midnight, copying the passenger(s) and almost getting the doctor killed. it adds so much to that episode.
The last Jodie stuff was actually those one-off specials we had in 2022 that came after The Flux stuff and culminated in The Power of the Doctor, so only just over a year.
The mavity of this episode is amazing
Some of the reactors tie themselves in knots trying to work out whether there was editing, deepfakes, green screens to explain the Wilf scene when the reality is it was just three actors filming a scene with no technical trickery. They shot it on the end of the Star Beast location shoot, and intended to shoot more but Bernard passed away so this was the only scene shot.
And it totally distracts them from just enjoying the moment. I feel like people are getting less able to just watch a story unfold. They bring real life into it constantly.
It was just filmed before he died. Nothing special. No weird cuts. No cgi. They didnt know he would die, only that he couldnt do a lot. Im not sure why you think there must be some big thing they've explained to us how they did it. It was literally just... before he died. Doctor who normally is filmed long in advance. Didn't think tbat was abnornal.
I think it's because people are getting so used to deepfakes of dead actors nowadays
@@c.lvr2602yeah, since fast & furious and star wars, it’s been a big thing so i don’t blame them for initially thinking it’s a deepfake or cgi. I’m sure they’re well aware now after the influx of comments telling them the truth
Well there's a lot of fake faces and things nowadays
Well, it normally isn't filmed this long in advance, we're seeing stuff that was filmed in May 2022
@@matheusflores619Yeah, they’re pretty far ahead at the moment. They’re shooting Ncuti’s second season now. Not sure why the rush, whether they need to get all of Ncuti shot now before another commitment happens or what. I’m sure there are boring production reasons behind it.
This month's new Doctor Who Magazine contains Bernard's final DWM interview. The interview, and filming, took place on 16th May 2022. Bernard passed away two months later, on 27th July.
The specials were all filmed over a year ago; Cribbins passed away during production, however, but was able to film this cameo before passing. (He was intended to be in the third special, but then wasn't available due to passing/continuing health issues.) Sidenote very minor spoiler: the first season of Gatwa's season has already been long-completed, as well -- they are well into filming his second season already, before his Christmas special airs later this month. EDIT: in re only having basically two actors for this episode -- yeah, this was a great "two-hander" of a story, with just the cameo inclusion at the end to break that.
This episode reminded me of the episode in season 4 where the doctor gets SCARED! The one where Donna stays at the vacation centre and the Doctor goes to travel on that train thingy and the monster copies them in speech etc...such an eery episode
I mean they were filming in my city centre (Bristol) for the 3rd special last year, one of my friends saw David filming some runnning, shocked face shots
There's photos from them filming the end scene with Bernard Cribbins, that people leaked.
Many thanks to Eric, Calvin, Melanie and Aaron! ⏳
I am constantly surprised by how geniunely out of the loop you guys keep yourselves and it's so joyful in the end! I try to keep out of the loop, and I still remember leaked set photos showing Bernard Cribbins on set, but it makes me feel like I hadnt known about it either, aand you guys genuine reactions make it so much better.
Bernard was in his 90's and his arm movements are extremely common in elders for a variety of reasons, my dad does it and he is in his 60s. I don't think it was chopped together, I just think Bernard's performance was just alittle different considering his age. His performance however is obviously fucking fantastic, and made me sob.
I hadn't enjoyed a dr who episode this much in years. so happy russel came back for some more who
This is the last we'll ever see of Wilf, my favorite and absolute best companion.
Bernard Cribbins, The man who made me cry heartily with his performance. The man who made me laugh heartily with his performance. He will be missed.
o7
I don't think I've ever looked forward to a reaction moment more than I've been waiting to see you guys see Wilf one last time.
In the behind the scenes you see that they actually did film this with Bernard before he died, so great to see him one final time!
Around 29:00 - there were 2 separate beings. The duplicate of The Doctor said “we drifted here in the lack of light”, we being plural.
18:47 that episode was matt smith with amy and rory when the tardis is in a woman. That wasnt the end of the universe, almost like a pocket dimension.
Think of a bubble inside another bubble, except its nothing like that
get ready for a farewell to Tennant again. Christmas special will be Nucti Gatwa's first episode
Three 60th specials, then a Christmas special and then a full series confirmed as early spring. Then there will be another Christmas episode next year followed by another full series, which is currently being filmed.
The House in the episode "The Doctor's Wife" was a being in that asteroid that lured timelords with fake distress signals of another timelord and then killed and also ate them I believe. It then proceeded to posses the TARDIS itself
I've been so excited to see this!
This is one of the most tense episodes of Doctor Who, in the same scary vibe as "Midnight" or "The Doctor's Wife", where Amy and Rory are being hunted in the Tardis by House. The body deformation, the Doctor and Donna having to face their internalized fears and thoughts in the form of their monster counterparts, being trapped in an eerie environment ... I'm all in. ❤ RTD is being bold with this story for the second special and I'm chuffed to bits!
It also shows the emotional progression of the Doctor. Between 10 and 14 there are subtle differences, ie 14 being more open emotionally and more mature. But also his fallibility, that he does not always get things right, like not recognizing Donna rightaway. I guess 14's character stems from David Tennant's age and experience as well as having gone through 11, 12 and 13, and he plays that out. It's not that 14 and 10 are different personalities with the same old face but 14 is rather an extension of 10, which just makes more sense.
And Wilfred Mott, such a bittersweet reunion, knowing that this was his final scene and there were more scenes intended in the last special but sadly did not happen because of Bernard Cribbins declining health. I salute you, Sir 🫡 RIP Bernard Cribbins! ❤
I forgot about house for a moment there so I got a really weird image in my head of Hugh Laurie chasing them through the tardis 😅
They originally had planned more Scenes with Bernard Cribbins. Unfortunately this is the only Scene they got with him due to his health and shortly afterwards his passing. But I am so happy i got to see him one last time as Wilf.
3.2K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️
Notes: "Residue Evil"? 😉
In the year 2022 AD, BC died? 😢
Rest In Peace. Thanks for all of the good that you've done and condolences to your family, friends and admirers. 🙏
19:54 Mark! "Schlong ship"? 🤔 Like the one in an "Austin Powers" movie? (I haven't seen them since they were new in movie theaters.) But that scene is a funny one! 😅
I did not know that Bernard Cribbins was in this. The second I saw him I just started bawling my eyes out.
Filming on the specials began in May 2022, 2 months before he passed and they filmed the last special first.
It was the episode called The Doctor’s Wife. It was a pocket dimension.
Filmed before he passed.
Wait until Blind Wave clock that they're already filming S16 of Doctor Who
I was wondering where your reaction is xD
This Special was wild. An interesting Villain. 14 being a prick (lick joke) :P
Also nice that after 60 years Doctor Who finally fixed that weird Word "Gravity" I mean, why not just call it what it is? Mavity.
I think the episode with “House” that you are referring to was a Matt Smith episode The Doctor’s Wife where the TARDIS is in a woman’s body. The TARDIS team end up in the nether space between Universes. Or something along those lines…. It’s a favourite episode of mine ❤
New writer casually adding in cosmic horror and philosophical ponderance of the infinite nothingness of space, certified goat behavior.
Amazing episode. So unique and reminds me a lot of Midnight from their previous time on the show. Favourite scene has to be David doing the exorcist and chasing Donna.
Shooting for these specials took place in mid-2022, before Jodie's final episode aired in October 2022. They already have all of Ncuti's first season filmed, and are shooting his second season now.
It wasn't CGI or a deepfake guys it was actually Bernard Cribbins (Wilfred Mott) this was filmed over a year ago a couple of months before he passed it is the last thing he filmed and unfortunately this episode is his last ever appearance of Wilf he was originally going to have a bigger part but Bernard Cribbins was too unwell to continue.
The scenes were filmed in May 22, he passed July 22.
This episode reminded me a lot of Midnight.
That was Bernard in that scene. He was going to be in next special but he was hospitalised during filming and then later passed. This is Wilf's last scene, and what a scene it was
The edge of the Universe was the Doctor's Wife? The one that House stole the TARDIS and put her in Idris the woman's body. Matt Smith episode, I like that one.
They filmed around may-June of last year I believed before Bernard passed away but he’ll be remembered 🫡
What a great and classic Dr Who episode. Just brilliant stuff.
I have watched enough Dr who to know when somethings off… I called it straight away that it wasn’t the real Doctor. I love how that moment made me feel like I was watching peak dr who again
I love weirdWho so this is story hit for me, it was very much a spiritual sequel to Midnight. While I do personally prefer Moffat overall, one of RTD's greatest strengths is always coming up with new acting challenges for the core cast & displaying new sides/aspects of their characters.
Based off 05-23 ideally we'd get a season with 2-3 RTD episodes, 2-3 Moffat, 1 Neil Gaiman, 1 Paul Cornell 1 Matt Jones.
I way prefer rtd to moffat, moffat makes weird choices with the characters
I always felt like RTD focusses on character, while Moffat focusses on story.
They're both good at both, each just seem to have a preference toward one over the other.
@@alansmithee419 I was literally just about to say this. RTD does lots of magical hand-wavey resolutions that don't stand to scrutiny but are perfectly emotionally satisfying.
Make no mistake Moffat is a high highs & low lows writer, he comes up with some of the most creative/fresh concepts I've never seen before anywhere else and when it lands it's like nothing else. Then when he misses its an absolute mess. I've been a Who fan since watching my dad's old VHSes as a kidin the 90's, Moffat has written some of my favourite episodes, scenes & lines of dialogue in all of Who, but sometimes he gets too impressed with himself & looses sight of telling a complete story.
@@alansmithee419 honestly your write even though I do still think rtd writes better stories. Moffats stories were awesome for me as a kid and still hold so much importance to me but in retrospect I am alot more skeptical of his character writing especially how he views wimen
This episode reminded me of the midnight's episode on the train
Bernard Cribbins filmed this scene on 16th May 2022 (16th - 18th were the dates of Camden filming) and he passed away in July 2022. It's a complete scene and he was meant to film more for the 3rd special, but was too ill, so this was his only complete scene. I watched the filming of this in London and it was lovely to see him. We waved to him and said hi as he was taken to his car at the end of the day and he gave us a big smile, raised his arms above his head for a double wave. So sad he passed soon after but so special he got to be a part of this. The tribute to him within Unleashed (the making of programme for each episode) is lovely. Unleashed is a great 30 mins of behins the scenes for these episodes.
So there's three specials running 25th Nov - 9th Dec, then a Xmas special, then in April I think we get series 1 (with Ncuti Gatwa), they are actually filming Ncuti's second series right now.
Spoilers! I’m pretty sure they don’t know about him
The Not-Things reminded me a lot of the Midnight Entity, wonder if they’re related at all
I just feel like mentioning that there's a few comics out there of Dr. Who that are mental. Maybe some day one of you will check them out :)
All of the specials were filmed in 2022 and Wilfs actor filmed that scene before he died. Nothings off about it lol
was looking forward to your reaction to this one! i always love when Doctor Who goes more into scifi or cosmic horror.
that scene where Donna thought she'd been left to die always gives me chills when i see it. i think i (mostly) believed she wouldn't die like that but the what if, how long the tension was held for and Catherine Tate's great acting just really got that horrible feeling to sink in for me. took me a while to process heh.
Just about Bernard Cribbins: in the behind-the-scenes show Doctor Who Unleashed that we have here in the UK, Russell T Davies said he had wanted to shoot more scenes with Cribbins - obviously, who wouldn't? - but he passed away before any more could.
He died in July 2022; the scenes from The Star Beast in that same location were shot in May 2022, so I think it's likely they shot Cribbins' ending scene at the same time. The rest of the episode was shot in July that year.
Other behind-the-scenes stuff: regarding how much of the ship was CGI, the long corridor was a stretch of floor surrounded by green screen (a large treadmill was used for the running at the end), and the rest was three sets being repurposed (for example, the green room where the Doctor puts down the line of salt is also the bridge); the long arms when the Not-things were introduced were prosthetics; at the start, that was Isaac Newton's actual house - I know because I've been there, but director Tom Kingsley also confirmed it.
Bernard was supposed to be in all three parts I believe, definitely was supposed to be in the final part but after filming the final scene of part two he became too ill so had to be cut out shortly before his passing. The entire 60th was shot over a year ago and the next season is already filmed too think they are close to finishing the 2025 season too.
I like that they touched on the timeless child thing, it had bugged me that until now that issue hadn't been treated with quite the 'mavity' it deserved, finding out they're not a timelord anymore is a massive deal and jodie/chibnall kind skipped over it/shrugged it off. In 5 mins these two gave that more weight than an entire episode or more has done previously
They made a very big deal of it, and I appreciate that it was dealt with in a similar way to the founding fathers plotline in "Lungbarrow." The scene between the Doctor and the fake Dona reminded me of the scene in "Eve of the Daleks" where the Doctor gets angry at Yaz before apologising and saying that she didn't want anyone else to die because of her decisions. She later refuses to explain what she means. This episode is clever in that it gives a very similar scene but puts a twist on it by having the villain be the one to get him to open up about something he didn't want to talk about. Also, the Doctor is still a Time Lord; the Doctor is actually one of the very first Time Lords. The Time Lords (who were created for "The War Games" in 1966) were the ruling class of Gallifrey; they are not a species.
They should have ignored it cus its shit
The episode Eric was thinking of was "The Doctor's Wife" from the Matt Smith era.
Did you guys talk over the entire "edge of the Universe" scene? That was one of the scariest parts of the episode.
I too noticed the odd framing *Melanie* was pointing out during _Wilfred's_ scene. It makes sense, given they couldn't do reshoots.
Rick youre thinking of the Human tardis episode, the sentient planet called house. That was a bubble universe. Not the edge
THe scene in the end is the last and only thing Bernard Cribbins filmed, before he passed away.
I think the situation on Earth at the end is going to be part of a Back-to-the-Future-style dark timeline that the next episode will be about reversing, not necessarily caused by the interaction with Newton, but the gravity/mavity thing will be used by the Doctor as a litmus test to know which timeline he's in or or whether an attempted change had worked. If Donna is saying mavity, that's the Donna who went to the ship with him, and if she's saying gravity, the timeline's back to normal.
"Where'd he get salt from?" Remember, his pockets are bigger on the inside. Who knows what he's got in there.
They were able to film one scene with Bernard Cribbins (Wilf) before his death. He was also meant to be in special 3 but it wasn't meant to be.
They have a behind the sences episode for each of the specials that gets posted on bbc iplayer. Hopefully the crew can watch them through that or find something avalible for America, because they're definitely worth a watch as a lot of their questions would be answered.
They shot this a couple of weeks before he passed age 93. RTD has said he was meant to be in the 3rd one more but didn't manage to shoot any of it. There was a clip in the trailer showing Donna pushing his wheelchair but that won't be in the final edit.
The SCP foundation calls these things "Pattern Screamers."
They do not exist. But human imagination can't deal with nothing, so we fill in the nothing with ideas, shapes, details, the human form... and pain.
