You were right about the audience - the angels don't move when they're on screen because the Audience is looking at them. It's a bit of a 4th Wall lean, but that's part of what makes it so brilliant.
i f**king hate those episodes. when we SAW weeping angel move i was so pissed. and it was still stone, they only turn to stone when observed, so seeing a stone angel move is just stupid. god i hate it so much
No, they're quantum-locked when observed (literally frozen in time - none of their atoms can be moved relative to any other, which is what renders them indestructible). Their appearance won't change so they'll still look like statues when they move. Saying that they "turn to stone" is just dumbing the concept down for the benefit of the widest possible audience. They are probably actually made of stone - silicon-based life is a common enough sci-fi trope.
theres a church on my street with a angel on the banister. They removed it recently for repairs because it had a chipped nose. My younger sister freaked out when they put it back.
*minor spoiler for a future episode* after the episode extremis came out for series 10, me and my sister were making fun of the whole computer simulation thing, so we turned to each other and were like "1..2...3..." and we both said the same number "76" at the same time, totally random...it was too weird
They weren't killed, though. They died naturally. They died happily. Doesn't have the same affect as, say, "Dalek" or "Waters of Mars" (which I can't wait for them to see)...
Eric's reactions are great. I once saw a guy dressed as a weeping angel at Anime North, so I ran over to tell him his costume was epic. Halfway back to my friend I turned around and he was standing right behind me with his hands over his eyes. Lost my shit!!
This episode was written by Steven Moffat, the next show runner. He really has a thing for making you scared of harmless stuff, like statues or people in gas masks...
Steven Moffat said once in an interview that he got the inspiration for the weeping angels when one time he walked past a closed, chained up graveyard with a sign that said something like "unsafe structure" and he obviously was curious enough to take a peek at it. There was a statue of a weeping angel, and that's where he got the idea. But that's not all - a couple of years later he happened to be there again (this time with his son) and he went to show his son the original weeping angel and it wasn't there, even though the graveyard was still abandoned and deemed unsafe.
When we were renovating our house, we wrote the Sally Sparrow message under the new wallpaper (which is official BBC 80s Tardis roundels and columns!) so hopefully whoever lives here next will get the reference🤣
The fact that we are participants in the story, in a small way by keeping the Angels at bay by seeing them on screen is terrifying. It makes the Angels so much more terrifying, makes them seem more than just fiction.
Blink has always been my go-to episode to get people into watching DW. Worked every single time. Plus: Sally Sparrow would make for an amazing companion.
Maik Bossert not just her but many others who would've made really good companions cause of how well they caught on to things and wouldn't tell the doctor what to do every single time
Which is strange when you think about it because it's the most dissimilar Doctor Who episode. The Doctor is hardly in it and it doesn't follow the formula of the regular show.
I remember watching a special features thing about the Weeping Angels, and it was mind-blowing to me that they had actors in costume with Angel masks (including removable opaque eyes). It looked so uncomfortable, and not moving for extended periods? So uncomfortable! So impressive!
Though there are plenty of street performers who pretend to be statues for much longer periods of time than even the longest individual takes in this episode.
So, apparently, after Love and Monsters, none of the writers wanted to be the one who'd have to do another Doctor-lite episode (which they had to due to budget). At the same time, Moffat promised he'd write an episode for series 3, but because of Sherlock, he kept putting it off, until it was almost too late, so as a way of apology, he took it on himself to bear the brunt of the Doctor-lite episode for this series. The rest, as they say, is history.
I am not sure how accurate that is as this episode aired in 2007 and was probably filmed in 2006 while Sherlock did not air until 2010 so I don't think it was any part of this.

It may have been Jekyll or whatever Moff was doing at the time. It's been a while since I read this tidbit and my brain just thought, "Oh, Moffat, he must have been doing Sherlock when he wasn't doing Doctor Who."
Interesting. Moffat based it on a story he had published in DW annual 2006 called What I Did on My Christmas Holidays' By Sally Sparrow. The story really just covers the final scene, the realisation that Sally gives the future Doctor the key to helping her in the past. Also the weeping angels aren’t in it.
Love and Monsters is definitely not my favorite episode. At the beginning when Rose and the Doctor were chasing that creature, it made me think of Scooby Doo. I thought it was pretty corny to see on DW. ruclips.net/video/Ueh3nsI_7ts/видео.html
@@darcybrummett7004 Well yes, I imagine that's why no one wanted to do another Doctor Lite episode. Because that's almost universally regarded as the worst episode of Nu Who. No one wanted to bear the risk of being the one responsible of a repeat of that fiasco.
I remember watching Blink as a kid. First school day after it aired everyone was walking around the playground like they were shellshocked. Moffat legitimately traumatized an entire generation with this episode lmao.
Also, Eric's reaction to the angels throughout the entire show is why I watch these videos. Totally justified reaction; they are so creepy!! I'm so glad you did this video.
In most tv shows, especially Doctor Who, there is always one episode a season in which the episode has very few sets, locations, graphics, etc. to save budget for a more grander finale. Doctor Who shows that these episodes, despite not having the flashy effects, can be some of the best of the season...such as Blink or Midnight
I remember first time I saw this. It was in the middle of the night, I was in my bed, with my back towards the door, in a pitch dark room. Let's just say that wasn't the optimal way to watch this episode if you're already afraid of the dark... I think it's definitely the best examples of a Doctor-lite episode. I love it. It's not one of my absolute favorites, but I understand why people love it so much. It definitely opened up DW at the time, showed people what the show could really do. It's a bit of a cult-classic, and it has the highest rating on IMDB out of all the episodes (yes, IMDB isn't the most trustworthy ranking system, but still). Fun fact, the writer of this episode (Steven Moffat, also wrote the "Are you my mummy?" and The Girl in the Fireplace) had no idea when he wrote this episode that it was going to become such a classic, and he's still amazed by that. So glad you guys enjoyed it! And got freaked out. As you should. And nicely done with the pops, Aaron and Calvin! :D And Lono, great job with the editing, as always.

Arguably one of the best Who episodes ever made, but stands on it's own as an incredible piece of Sci fi. Could be a standalone twilight zone episode and it would still work. Masterpiece.
For me and the people at my school, “Blink” was a right of passage for new Doctor Who watchers. We would tell them to watch “Blink” and then start from the beginning. Basically as a way of saying “this is how scary it gets. So if you’re okay with that, then welcome aboard.”
I love this episode so much. Of course now I can't look at statues the same ever again. Loved Eric's reactions. Definitely my favorite episode of Doctor Who.
This episode is great! It has a real scare factor to it. The Weeping Angels are very intimidating and creepy villains. The fact that they have the advantage and opportunity to kill you slowly when you're not looking at them makes them a real threat. The whole situation of not being able to blink or turn your back away when surrounding or encountering them is so intense and makes things extra nervous. Eric and Shane's reaction to this episode was great. Glad they enjoyed it. This is one of the strongest Doctor Who-lite episodes. Sally Sparrow is also a great one off character (who could have also been a great potential companion).
As a kid, and becoming obsessed with watching statues I saw in the streets, I, some time after watching some of the episodes where the Weeping Angels appear, turned to my father and said "Why can't they wink? One at a time and you can outrun the easily, at least you can hold longer." :D I love the fact that we also take part and the Angels can't move if the audience sees them, such a good point. ^-^ A fantastic episode.
How is no one mentioning Carey Mulligan? One of those "remember when we didn't know they'd be famous?"-moments in Doctor Who, along with the Andrew Garfield appearance earlier.
Fun fact, this episode was written by the same guy who wrote the two parter with the Gas-Mask kid, and the Girl in the Fireplace, which were favorites of yours. He wrote a two-parter for Season 4, and became the lead writer/creative director as of Season 5
Note how none of the angels ever move on screen here, even if no character is looking at them. It kinda indicates that one of the people that prevents them from moving is you. They are aware of you. (Spoiler: Of course this gets fucked up in later appearances since the Weeping Angels were basically ruined in every other appearance, but we're talking about the masterpiece that is Blink here)
Time of Angels was... alright. The problem is that Blink basically got the Weeping Angels perfect, they work perfectly in this story, have enough mystery around them to be especially interesting and were very original here. They were never going to match that and never have, all other appearances have just been second rate by comparison.
Did you notice in Blink that the Doctor says about the same Angel touching Billy as him thus sent back to the same time, and the crew hypothesised that the same one touched Martha. But in AtM (series 7) when a certain character asks if the same angel will take her back to the same time as the other character sent back (avoiding names just in case) the Doctor says "no one knows" Err.... It happened to him!!!
I'm gonna admit I never watched this episode in full cause I knew I'd fucking piss myself, so having the reaction to follow along and hold my hand really helped lol. I'm never going to a park or a cemetery again in my life.
the thing I love about the weeping angels is that they move past Doctor Who as a show itself like I knew about these things ten years ago before I even really knew what Doctor Who was, just by listening to people in my class talk about it, and they sounded so terrifying that I never looked at a statue the same way again
Sally Sparrow is played by a then unknown Carey Mulligan(probably spelled that wrong). She's now an Academy Award nominated actress who's been in a ton of movies. One movie in particular was "Drive" with Ryan Gosling.
I’m here just to say that I have waited all these months for this episode (since you guys started to react to the series), and I’m so happy. Eric freaked out just the way I did when I watched this, I couldn’t stop talking and giggling just for the sake of not crying haha Props to the editing of the video (as always), and excited to watch some other wonderful episodes to come :)
This episode reminded people of what true horror really was. No jump scares, no sudden loud noises, no over the top cussing or gore. What is worse than death? Losing everything and everyone, but still having to keep going on despite knowing you'll never get them back.
Blink was my first episode I ever watched of Doctor Who. I was on a school field trip and we were staying the night in the gym in some school across the state. A group of friends brought their portable DVD player and we watched this in the dimly lit hallway, half of it chained off and lit by a single lightbulb. Immediately after the episode ended the lone lightbulb blinked and the whole group freaked. It was great.
Probably my favorite David Tennant Doctor Who episode. I knew about the Weeping Angels thanks to a sleepover when I was little where my friend retold an episode as a scary story (and it worked). Years later, when I finally decided to give Doctor Who a try, I was amazed how unerving they were; and I just now realized how good the editing for this episode was.
I love this episode, you guys should watch doctor who confidential which was the behind the scenes series that accompanied every episode, the angels are actually people is consumes so that they could move from frame to frame which looks so awesome behind the scenes xxx
I think it's funny how dude on the right is telling dude on the left that "wibbly wibbly timey wimey" is basically saying "don't worry about it" while trying to explain how it actually worked. I'm with dude on the left: I love the idea that there was an actual explanation from the Doctor, but it ends up becoming "wibbly wobbly timey wimey".
First Comment: I have been waiting for this episode, and I want to say it confirmed my opinions of you, and decision to watch this channel. You picked up on EVERYTHING I wanted you too, and more. Just phenomenally well done guys
There's a theory that The Weeping Angel's are undead Time Lords. That's why they feed off of time energy. Vampires feed off blood because they can't produce their own. Weeping Angel's feed off time because they can't produce their own time energy like they could when they were Time Lords.
My parents who watched dr who: Every time we saw the daleks we just hid behind the sofa they we're so scary. Me: Hey, wanna watch this totally not scary episode of dr who? And that my friends, is how you remove all trust between you and your parents when it comes to TV shows.
I honestly don't get how the Daleks managed to make an entire generation of kids hide behind the sofa. I guess it may have been because it was before the age of CGI and the ability to make genuinely scary bug-eyed monsters. So Daleks were unique in their position as non-humanoid aliens that didn't look like they were made of bubble wrap.
You're not the only one to noticed the Angels didn't move while the viewer was watching.Another person had made the same comment.Didn't notice it,myself.Great episode!
This was the first episode of DW I ever watched. My friend decided to show me the scariest episode she had seen (this was somewhere in 2009 I think?). Took me a year before I gave DW a chance because I thought they’d all be this terrifying. I have not watched this specific episode since. The weeping angels have literally been in my nightmares at least 5 times a year for the last 13 years, so there’s that 😅
I have always had a deep-seated fear of statues since I was a girl and watched the 63 version of Haunting of Hill House. This episode reaffirmed why I never really got over it.
8:58 I love how the guy asks, "how do you not blink?" And the guy on the right blinks with one eye and says "you do it one eye at a time" and then the 2 on the left do it too lmao so did I
I get what his trying to say at 20:00. In that, if the dude is writing down what the Doctor said, and the Doctor is just reading what the dude wrote down. Where did the original conversation occur for one of them to begin the cycle. It's a paradox. & is it possible that in the first iteration of the Doctor having the conversation, he did fully explain the complexity of time. But the dude didn't have any clue what he was saying so just wrote 'Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey stuff', then that's why she mentions him writing in shorthand.
Finally!!! The weeping angels are easily my favorite enemy's of the new doctors. I've been waiting for this episode sense they started reacting, and I can't believe how far into the series they are.
Just perfect, if blink was a film, it would be in my top 10 favourite movies. Well paced, inventive ideas, original story, likeable and competent protagonist, memorable side characters and the best villains in the show's history.
I remember watching this at the age of 14 when it first came out back in 2007 and let's just say, that I didn't sleep properly for a whole week and I had to leave the light on because of this episode. Not even joking! This episode is absolutely brilliant in both its ideas and in its execution.
One of the best Moffat stories by far. I also love The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon and The Angels Take Manhattan in particular.
The way this episode is made is the selling point! Making the audience a part of the episode, notice how in some scenes none of the characters are looking at the angels yet they don't move because we as the audience are looking! It's brilliant!
This is still the best thing that Steven Moffat has ever written, & he's written some incredible episodes & probably the best Doctor Who episode in it's 54-year history. Its still incredibly atmospheric & creepy after numerous rewatches .Fantastic
Each season has an episode referred to as "Doctor lite". It's an episode where the two leads can go off and film another episode at the same time as the lite one to save time. Although these days they film less episodes that somehow take 9 or 10 months which is kind of insane.
This was, and is, one of my favorite episodes ever. Love the music, theme, and of course, the Angels. Did you notice that even when Sally wasn't looking at an angel, they didn't move? That's because the camera (aka) the audience, WE were looking at them. Genius filming.
"I have only till the rain stops." One heartbreaking haunting sentence. Billy and Sally woulda made awesome companions with Martha. Erics reactions were everything. A week after stared at statues till I got passed it, made driving interesting. Great reactions lads. Anyone figure out the DrWho Easter egg 17dvds?
Blink, probably the second scariest and most all around freaky episode of New Who. First? Well, just wait next season for when the clock strikes Midnight
The creepy house, Wester Drumlins, is actually (now) available for holiday rentals: Fields House in Newport, Wales. It has also been used for Sherlock, and Last Christmas and Knock Knock in later seasons of DW. I don’t think they have any angels anymore :(
You know what I notice after watching the blink muiltiple times is that the weeping angels also turn to stone when the viewer is watching them. Their power goes beyond the 4th wall.
@Mr. Fiddlesticks I'd say the original series only had a handful of bad episodes, the new series is worse but was still fine up until the later Mat Smith era. But if somebody says the original Doctor Who series is one of the best series ever made they are indeed correct.
the angels teleport you randomly though it seems each angel has its own point they drop you off at. also they feed off the ptential energy of what you wouldve done if you hadnt been touched hence why they wanted the tardis, infinite time energy(the glowy stuff rose got).
This episode creeped me the Fudge out, and also made me cry. Billy, after she just met him was then just lying on his death bed, after living a while life waiting to meet her again, to bring a final message before he died.
You were right about the audience - the angels don't move when they're on screen because the Audience is looking at them. It's a bit of a 4th Wall lean, but that's part of what makes it so brilliant.

the weeping angels and the silence are the most imaginative villains ever made.
Samantha Nickson Yeah some of the stuff they did with the Silence was genuinely impressive.
Both by Moffat
The Silence are very imaginative villains. I don't remember why, though. O.o
Don't forget the Vashta Nerada.
Not the most imaginative but still really good.
Samantha Nickson yah but the Silence were made to kill, its sucks how they where built to taunt and try to kill the doctor.

She was in An Education, Drive, The Great Gatsby, Far from the Madding Crowd, Suffragette, and Mudbound, among many other things.
Laura Kay not watched any of those
She's definitely in demand, now.

Fun fact, this episode was written by the same guy who wrote the two parter with the Gas-Mask kid, and the Girl in the Fireplace, which were favorites of yours. He wrote a two-parter for Season 4, and became the lead writer/creative director as of Season 5
Steven Moffat wrote the greatest episodes of Season 1 - 4, and is still a great writer in Seasons 5 - 10
Note how none of the angels ever move on screen here, even if no character is looking at them. It kinda indicates that one of the people that prevents them from moving is you. They are aware of you.
(Spoiler: Of course this gets fucked up in later appearances since the Weeping Angels were basically ruined in every other appearance, but we're talking about the masterpiece that is Blink here)
I like _Time of Angels._ I think it gets more hate than it deserves because this episode exists.
Time of Angels was... alright. The problem is that Blink basically got the Weeping Angels perfect, they work perfectly in this story, have enough mystery around them to be especially interesting and were very original here. They were never going to match that and never have, all other appearances have just been second rate by comparison.
MyAbridged Like I said, it gets more hate than it deserves because this episode (which uses them perfectly) exists.
Did you notice in Blink that the Doctor says about the same Angel touching Billy as him thus sent back to the same time, and the crew hypothesised that the same one touched Martha. But in AtM (series 7) when a certain character asks if the same angel will take her back to the same time as the other character sent back (avoiding names just in case) the Doctor says "no one knows"
Err.... It happened to him!!!
Rob Martin He's lying because he doesn't want *character* to go through with it. Another character then immediately contradicts him anyway.
I'm gonna admit I never watched this episode in full cause I knew I'd fucking piss myself, so having the reaction to follow along and hold my hand really helped lol. I'm never going to a park or a cemetery again in my life.
the thing I love about the weeping angels is that they move past Doctor Who as a show itself
like I knew about these things ten years ago before I even really knew what Doctor Who was, just by listening to people in my class talk about it, and they sounded so terrifying that I never looked at a statue the same way again
They were actors dressed up in costume and makeup
Sally Sparrow is played by a then unknown Carey Mulligan(probably spelled that wrong). She's now an Academy Award nominated actress who's been in a ton of movies. One movie in particular was "Drive" with Ryan Gosling.
The weeping angles is easily one of the most terrifying, creative and memorable monsters in tv history
Eric's reaction is great. He will freak out whenever he sees a statue from now on.
“You stupid pieces of shit” Eric sounds so relieved those things got defeated.
I’m here just to say that I have waited all these months for this episode (since you guys started to react to the series), and I’m so happy. Eric freaked out just the way I did when I watched this, I couldn’t stop talking and giggling just for the sake of not crying haha
Props to the editing of the video (as always), and excited to watch some other wonderful episodes to come :)
Back when Doctor Who fans loved me and my Episodes
Then you started running the entire show instead of one shot episodes and things turned to shite
People still do.
I still love you, don't worry Moff.
Wow, it's been a while since I've seen a Moffat hate profile, not every Whovian hates you and your work...
Jim Fish SomeRandomGuyOnline has been in the comment sections of all these videos and he’s the biggest Moffat hater.
This was literally the first episode of Doctor Who I watched, and it really made me want to see the whole series.
Eren the "Just bink one eye at a time" is pure genius! I cant belive I never thought of that! Thanks to Doctor Who I'm scarf of everything now. 😂🤓😲
I patiently await the sound of drums 1-2-3-4
"Close one eye at a time."
That's how my dog blinks.
The worst game of peek-a-boo ever T-T
Shane and Eric kept hitting the nail on the head!! 5:48 9:26 10:02 =D
Hasn't Eric already seen New Who though?
Nvm got Aaron and Eric mixed up.
Eric also came up with the fourth wall theory of why we don't see them physically move, the audience has their eyes on them: 9:55
Probably my favorite David Tennant Doctor Who episode. I knew about the Weeping Angels thanks to a sleepover when I was little where my friend retold an episode as a scary story (and it worked). Years later, when I finally decided to give Doctor Who a try, I was amazed how unerving they were; and I just now realized how good the editing for this episode was.
I love Eric asking at 17:42 whether a camera counts as something observing an angel.
"The image of an angel becomes itself an angel"
This episode, a doctor lite episode was partially filmed in my husbands record shop. Lucky to meet both David and Freema. I enjoyed your reactions.
The weeping angels have literally been in my nightmares at least 5 times a year for the last 13 years, so there’s that 😅
Say what you will... but Moffat has the best monster, coupling & likely soundtrack. Please react to Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
I have always had a deep-seated fear of statues since I was a girl and watched the 63 version of Haunting of Hill House. This episode reaffirmed why I never really got over it.
I was so impressed that the Weeping Angels were played by actors with masks on. Truly amazing job.
Wait for the Silence, Eric ;)
Who? Why don't I remember... why did I wrote this comment? ...what is happening?
wait, what? When did I write this?
Ahh, i've waited so long for your reaction to Blink! The music makes it even more terrifying 😣
Finally!!! The weeping angels are easily my favorite enemy's of the new doctors. I've been waiting for this episode sense they started reacting, and I can't believe how far into the series they are.
I'm pretty sure actors did the weeping angels. They're trained so they can stand perfectly still. Love this episode, though, and your guys' reactions!
This episode is my favorite episode, the lack of the doctor and the threat and sheer fear the angles make you feel makes me like this episode
Just perfect, if blink was a film, it would be in my top 10 favourite movies. Well paced, inventive ideas, original story, likeable and competent protagonist, memorable side characters and the best villains in the show's history.
IM NOT READY FOR THIS BEST THING ABOUT COMING HOME FROM COLLEGE
The Angels are cool but it was the Vashta Nerada that creeped me out
Hey who turned out the lights?
@@Normaub1 me
Each season has an episode referred to as "Doctor lite".
Six years later and Ncti Gatwa has ushered the Doctor into the afterlife. It's dead Jim, but not as we know it.
can you imagine what it must be like to be the guy whose job it is to put the weeping angel statues away after a day of shooting
worserboss but they're not statues they're humans painted grey
Probably really easy as when the actors are not wearing them they are just clothes and paint
I’ve been watching through this series and I finally got to this episode and I’m so excited
"I have only till the rain stops." One heartbreaking haunting sentence. Billy and Sally woulda made awesome companions with Martha. Erics reactions were everything. A week after stared at statues till I got passed it, made driving interesting. Great reactions lads. Anyone figure out the DrWho Easter egg 17dvds?
still think this is one the best Dr Who episodes makes you worry about statues now.. love the bit at end where he says "dont blink" and he blinks
And now I'm gonna wait for Midnight...
And the Library two-parter.
Midnight is my favourite episode!
me: (trying to see if the fridge light stays on)
also me: (trying to see the weeping angels move)
Blink, probably the second scariest and most all around freaky episode of New Who. First? Well, just wait next season for when the clock strikes Midnight
The creepy house, Wester Drumlins, is actually (now) available for holiday rentals: Fields House in Newport, Wales. It has also been used for Sherlock, and Last Christmas and Knock Knock in later seasons of DW. I don’t think they have any angels anymore :(
I love this episode. The angels! The library brings another personal favorite creature of mine
They can snap necks, if they aren't hungery
I've been waiting for you guys to get to this one. One of my favorites. Loved your reactions!
You know what I notice after watching the blink muiltiple times is that the weeping angels also turn to stone when the viewer is watching them. Their power goes beyond the 4th wall.
You finally got to the scariest episode!
Before the villains got overused.
Fenix 3 stories and 3 cameo appearances is overused?!
Midnight is still the scariest episode for me
Rosanna Gagne
Same. Still creeps me out
I found "The Silence" way more scary then the Weeping Angels :/
@Mr. Fiddlesticks
I'd say the original series only had a handful of bad episodes, the new series is worse but was still fine up until the later Mat Smith era.
But if somebody says the original Doctor Who series is one of the best series ever made they are indeed correct.
the problem with taking a crocodile everywhere as protection is a crocodile wants to kill you too
I don’t quite know why, but this comment is one of my favorite things I’ve seen on the Internet.
So thank you! 😄
Eric throughout this entire episode ❤ - Rosanna G
the angels teleport you randomly though it seems each angel has its own point they drop you off at. also they feed off the ptential energy of what you wouldve done if you hadnt been touched hence why they wanted the tardis, infinite time energy(the glowy stuff rose got).
Here it is. Love that episode!
This episode creeped me the Fudge out, and also made me cry. Billy, after she just met him was then just lying on his death bed, after living a while life waiting to meet her again, to bring a final message before he died.
yes they were ladys dressed up, there is a behind the sceane that was cool, also eric reactions made this episode
