There were two things I didn't catch until the second viewing for this. One was River commenting "today's my birthday" And the other was how River talks about what the Doctor is going to turn into if he keeps on his current path, and during the episode the one girl from the Forest talked about how the word Doctor meant a great warrior.
Jack Harkness was supposed to appear here but John was busy filming Torchwood: The Miracle Day at the time. It premiered during this summer break. Silurian is not just a word. It's a geological period, around 430 million years ago. Also, I don't think you caught the name Madame Kovarian. You didn't talk about her at all. Or Dorium Maldovar being back.
@@bun6134 Well, she IS SJW pandering, the BBC practically beat is over the head with the fact that Bill was gay, conveniently leaving out anything else that may have made her, oh i don't know, an interesting character, wait, nope, I've said one too many words, that would have made her a character, but that's not the only reason I think she's the worst thing about new Who. There's a bit of a chain of thought needed to exlain why though, so prior to travelling with the Doctor she thought the TARDIS was an extention of his office, but she'd have to have walked through the control room..... to get into his office, so there's some proof that she doesn't understand bjective reality, which is in-and-of-itself proof of an overall lack of common sense, and if the Doctor's companions lack common sense, then just anybody can be a companion, which makes the whole exclusivity of time-travelling with the Doctor irrelevant, and if just anybody can make a position irrelevant, then it never really mattered in the first place, meaning Rose, Jack, Clara, Amy, Donna, Martha and the rest are inconsequential in the grand scheme of the series.
Almost all companions were more 'beating us over the head' about their sexuality than Bill was. Consider how often Amy's sexuality is brought up, in comparison. At the start of series 10, Bill was somewhat ashamed for her sexuality, but over time grew more confident and learned that there really was nothing to be ashamed of - Jack was never ashamed for his sexuality. That's the difference. Hate to break it to you buddy, but DW, like most Sci-Fi, has been progressively leaning since day one. It isn’t something that just recently popped up like most of you "SJW PWNERS" think - the only think that has sprung up in the last 10 years is your kind and platforms for you to speak on. I think it is rather odd to call Amy/Jack/Clara/Amy/Donna/Martha people with "common sense", but not Bill. Bill was at the top of her class at university, and always asked the right questions. What makes any of the other companions so clever in your opinion? She saw the Doctor like the grandfather she never had, and her arc perfectly reflects the warmth that Pearl Mackie brought to the character. You argue that Bill is a bad companion, because Bill mentioned her sexuality a few times (I fail to see how that's a problem unless you're homophobic) and 'lacks common sense' because of some shit about the Doctor's office (?????). Okay pal.
@@bun6134 Personally I've been really hating it when TV shows shove sexuality down your throat. It's bad when one of the first traits you think of for a character becomes "gay/lesbian" instead of their actual personality. I think it's awesome we're being more progressive in media, but it shouldn't be super in-your-face. That said, I agree that it wasn't pushed that hard with Bill. It felt natural enough to me, and I really liked her character.
The first 7 episodes aired in Spring 2011. The remaining 6 episodes aired in Autumn the same year. Steven Moffat has said in interviews that it was the BBC's decision to split because there was another show they didn't want it to overlap with in the summer (likely Torchwood: Miracle Day), but that he already intended to have this in the middle of the series so it suited being split. The next episode has a meta-joke about the Doctor being away all summer.
This episode was written by the same guy that did 'Blink' and 'The girl in the fire place', and many more amazing episodes. Steven Moffat is definitely my favorite writer.
this word is so overused but this episode is so EPIC. i love it and it has some of the best moments imo of New Who. River being Amy and Rory's daughter The Doctor's incursion and takeover of Demon's Run with the help of his friends the baby being revealed to be a "Ganger" Rory being a badass ITS ALL SO GOOD!!
@@TimeturnerJ Sure but my point is it would be _exactly_ as telling if it was also his cot (before it was Son/Daughter of Who then Susan's) - it'd still have that uncomfortable history _and_ be his. It's open to interpretation of course, to me it doesn't feel like he's lying here, to you it does. So it goes ;).
I love the bit at 2:55, which few reactors seem to catch: Madame Vastra (the Silurian woman) says "Jack the Ripper has claimed his last victim." Jenny says "How did you find him?" "Stringy...but tasty all the same." Understated but totally bad ass.
Honestly the "Good men have too many rules." "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many." is one of the best most chilling moments in the series.
Fun fact about the term "doctor". Just like to them it meant "warrior", to us it means "healer", but neither are the original meaning. "Doctor" in Latin meant "teacher", hence the connection with "doctrine" (teaching).
This is one of the best episodes for displaying his special kind of angry. In the Family of Blood episode they hinted at it. The Fury of the Timelords. And I think they did a great job showing how his charm and humor are really almost like an emergency vent for the barely contained rage he feels to those who harm the people he loves.
11 here is a lot like 7 in that deep down there is this sinister and dark side he'll turn to. 7 was the Doctor who would straight up tell his companions to blow shit up. Some Doctors worry and fret and negotiate with their enemies. 7 and here 11 are just "Your plan is stupid, you're stupid, and you just called down the thunder!".
I like to think she was taken when they separated in the second episode, exploring the country to find out what the Silence were. Because she really does think she's pregnant when she shoots the suit, there's mention she's put on a couple of pounds, and other symptoms. But when she visits the orphanage, she sees the sliding door. So before then, but after the doctor "died."
This episode could have explained Jack as the Face of Boe! You see, Jack was supposed to appear in this episode where the monks would cut his head, thus leaving him with the beginning of the appearance of the Face of Boe!!
To get why he is called the Doctor, you need to watch the first episode. I don't mean the first episode from 2005, I mean the first episode all those years back in the days of black and white television; "An Unearthly Child."
This episode has people hating and loving it, I personally love it. Rory’s scene in the beginning and the doctor taking over demons run. They give me the shivers every time
And we finally made it to this episode! One of the best of Matt Smith's run for sure. I would even be so bold as to say it's one of the most satisfying twists in the entire series.
QUESTION TO ALL OF YOU: So as someone who loves season 6 and saw everyone(a lot of people) saying that season 6 is where it goes downhill, I’m intrigued to hear why. I’ll at least accept that the ending isn’t great. That’s fair. I like tWoRS but I can at least see why it wouldn’t be a good episode. However, besides that, I can think of any bad episode individually. Everyone they’ve reacted so far has been decent-good. And we have let’s kill hitler, night terrors, girl who waited, god complex and closing time... all which I would class as very solid episodes. (The point I’m making is that if there’s only one episode not considered good, how isn’t the series at least considered decently enjoyable?)
Gilanes This might be a long comment, so sorry about that in advance. Firstly, I'll start off with why I think series 6 as a whole doesn't work. The emotional impact of Amy and Rory losing their daughter is completely glossed over. Mel being revealed to be River and growing up alongside Amy and Rory all along is a ridiculous attempt at softening the blow of them losing Melody. The Doctor using the teselecta is a cheap get out of jail card, which doesn't even make sense because the Doctor started to regenerate in "The Impossible Astronaut". The teselecta is a machine operated by humans. It shouldn't have been able to replicate a regeneration. It would've made slightly more sense if it was a flesh duplicate of the Doctor, but that thread was completely dropped and never mentioned again. Even then, the Eleventh Doctor was the last in the Doctor's regeneration cycle, so it would've still been inconsistent because he had no regenerations left. Also, the whole premise of the series is kind of ridiculous. They teased us with the possibility of the Doctor dying, but we all knew it was a bluff. As a result, the level of dramatic tension and suspense wasn't as much they probably hoped. We were simply waiting too see the answers to all of our many, many questions and find out how the Doctor got out of it in the end. It would've helped if the answers were at all satisfactory. Why was it necessary for the Doctor and River to get married? It felt so OTT and dramatic for absolutely no reason. All of that emotional build up and drama felt so cheap, unnecessary and manipulative, when the teselecta twist was revealed. Also, it was never even explained how the Silence were able to control and blow up the Tardis in the previous series' finale and why they were willing to put all of reality in danger just to stop the Doctor from getting to Trenzalore? They were trying to save reality by destroying all of reality? Makes sense. As for the episode quality, I think the opening two parter, "The Doctor's Wife" and AGMGTW are all brilliant stories. The only other good episodes in the series are TGWW and "The God Complex". The rest of the episodes are either mediocre like "The Rebel Flesh"/"The Almost People" and "Night Terrors". Or they were just bad like "The Curse of the Black Spot", "Let's Kill Hitler", "Closing Time" and "The Wedding of River Song". That's half of the series' episodes that aren't good. I would agree that it's not a terrible series though. In all honesty, there isn't a single terrible series. There are just some that are poor in comparison to the rest and some that standout. I think series 6 is an ok series overall, but it has lots and lots of missed opportunities. I would argue that there's never been a more ambitious series than series 6 and there's something to be said about that. The arc, no matter how ridiculous in it's premise was incredibly interesting and innovative. It had the potential to be absolutely mind blowing in the same way the previous series' cracks in time arc was. However, Moffat put himself into a corner by putting so much in to the series arc and making it so integral to the series as a whole. The arc HAD to be great for the series to succeed and it wasn't. Moffat put all his eggs into one basket and he couldn't quite turn his ambition into something truly great in the end. Again, apologies for the long comment, but I hope I got my points across well enough and you understand why so many people think series 6 is probably second only to series 7 as the weakest series.
TVScanner99 totally agree with you man. May be a little biased as Smith is my favourite and the combo of Amy, Rory and River felt was prime doctor who for me 😄
I think it's very underrated. The arc is very flawed, and the finale isn't very satisfying, but dangnabit this season as a whole was one of the most exciting rollercoaster rides of a season for me, even if it didn't stick the landing. The two that I HATE are Black Spot and Night Terrors, but there are usually 2 shit eps a season. 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 11 are all fantastic imo, 12 is pretty great too
Other than 7B, S6 I enjoyed the most overall compared to S5 and S7A. I don't love S6 or even really like that much but in comparison to S5 and S7A...I enjoyed more episodes as a whole. Actually, I don't even like S5 and S7A.
The VR idea is a cool one. You need to write a Who script! The avatar was Amy last episode...that is, her consciousness was in and was directing the avatar. I love love Rory in this. I think the doctor had him wear centurion clothes to open the door in his mind to his centurion past and skills. Love Rory the centurion. Wish we had more of that after his plastic period. This ep had some fantastic characters. Some of the best of Moffats run. This is also one of the episodes that made me believe the Doctor was a serious badass in the time war. Btw..,the baby was there with Amy, but not later when Rory “rescued” her. The doctor is the name he chose when he became a time lord. We don’t know the name he was given at birth (or whatever gallifreyans do). A lot of these questions are answered or implied in the Classic series. The doctor was always somewhat asexual...and clueless about human reproduction. It is possible it’s different on gallifrey. Or maybe for time lords. Don’t confuse fondness for sexual love (as I think Rose did). Ten loved Rose but could not love her the way she wanted him to, until part of him (a detached part!) became part human. It’s just not in him naturally. He probably can experience it but I’m not sure it’s a normal thing for time lords
11:05 I also thought he saw the names of his future children with River! I still like to fantasize about the Doctor and River rebuilding a new Time Lord race.
The Doctor is part of the Prydonian clan. The Prydonians are hereditary members of the High Council. Borusa, the Doctor's mentor, was also a Prydonian.
The reveal is finally here! It's not a full circle yet though :v Is Vastra's origin really from this episode? She's not from the classic era? If not, how is she related to those Silurians in 2020?
This is when she's first introduced. The Silurians in the classic era were in much smaller groups than the civilisation depicted in series 5, and looked very different. The modern redesign was explained as being a different branch of the species. There's a tiny bit of backstory given in this episode. If I remember right, she's the only survivor of another small group underneath London. I wouldn't be surprised if Big Finish later did an origin story for her.
@@TheMoonRover I don't know about an origin story, but Big Finish is doing a Paternoster Gang series. www.bigfinish.com/news/v/the-paternoster-gang-return
John Barrowman was supposed to be in this episode as Captain Jack, but he was busy filming Torchwood at the time. I think it's canon that he is assumed to have been there at Demon's Run even though we didn't get to see him.
Speaking about meaning of "doctor" probably done with Japanese connotations (along with swords etc in this episodes): "sensei" is used for for all three categories - medical doctors (healers), scientists and teachers (wise men) and martial art masters (warriors)
It also makes sense and a hint that Riversong says 'Sweetie'. When we are older we repeat phrases we overhear as children. The eyepatch calls peoplemSweetie, she probably called the baby that as she grew up as well ;)
Given that the universe doesn’t implode when different incarnations of the Doctor meet, I’m sure the universe would not have imploded had River met Melody as we know that Melody regenerated at the end of Day of the Moon. Then again, it might’ve as River isn’t a Gallifreyan Time Lord.
you know, I always assumed the Time Lord/Galifreyan thing was like the Human/Earthling thing. You know, the Doctor is a Time Lord, but he is also from Galifrey, so he is a Galifreyan
Vastra was in the previous episodes. Not TV though, it was PROSE audio dramas on the BBCone Radio. (They're quite good btw, they are meant to be like the old fashioned radio serials like 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' when it was a radio show)

Check out his Jekyll series before the new one comes out. I'm not sure whether it's a continuation or a reboot.
this word is so overused but this episode is so EPIC. i love it and it has some of the best moments imo of New Who.
River being Amy and Rory's daughter
The Doctor's incursion and takeover of Demon's Run with the help of his friends
the baby being revealed to be a "Ganger"
Rory being a badass
ITS ALL SO GOOD!!
The Doctor had a granddaughter. Ergo, he had at least one child.
So no, it probably wasn't his cot. But some things are too painful to speak about.
No reason it can't still be his cot (even if it was _also_ used by his son/daughter and/or Susan - passed down to them as it was to Melody).
@@anonymes2884 Perhaps, yeah, but I think that little uncomfortable pause he does before suddenly saying "It was mine" is very telling.
Novels specify that he had 13 children.
@@Kasterborous1963 Wow, that's
That's a lot of children
So...remember when Eric said that it'd be crazy if the Doctor ran into someone like Hitler? *glance over at next episode*
I'm looking forward to the snowmen episode simply because of the ending.
3 did. Hitler helped him stop the Master during The Night Of The Long Knives.
This is one of the best Smith episodes in my opinion
one of the best DOCTOR WHO episodes in my opinion :)
Kevin O'Grady I thought it was one of the worst and I think the next episode is possibly THE worst Smith episode.
I love the bit at 2:55, which few reactors seem to catch: Madame Vastra (the Silurian woman) says "Jack the Ripper has claimed his last victim." Jenny says "How did you find him?" "Stringy...but tasty all the same." Understated but totally bad ass.
"what's the Doctor's message?"
The message: "Answer the question"
"No! I'm old! And fat! And blue!" Best underrated line of the episode
The Headless Monks always reminded me of an off-brand Sith. The robes, the lightsaber like swords, the lightnings. Just tweaked a bit.
Honestly the "Good men have too many rules." "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many." is one of the best most chilling moments in the series.
Rory the Roman badass!
I love this episode so much!
Especially that ending made me cry!
AND GOD THAT WAITING WAS THE LONGEST 3 MONTHS OF 2011 FOR ME!
Fans who waited.
So obviously when you think about it. Melody Pond / River Song. It’s just alternate words for the name with the last name first and first name last.
I can't believe we're finally here! Eric has been dancing around the edges of the answer with his theories. I'm so happy we get to see the pay off.
This storyline has to be one of my favourites in New Who.
God the music when River reveals herself as Melody is one of my favourite tracks in the entire Doctor Who. It always makes the hair on my neck rise.
yeah her theme always makes my heart ache real bad T.T
Strax is seriously one of the best characters!
Fun fact about the term "doctor". Just like to them it meant "warrior", to us it means "healer", but neither are the original meaning. "Doctor" in Latin meant "teacher", hence the connection with "doctrine" (teaching).
IV been waiting for this reaction from the start of Matt Smiths era started for u guys!!!😄😄😄
Saw the title of the episode for this week... instant chills
"Good men don't need rules...today isn't the day to find out why I have so many." One of the darkest Doctor moments next to Time Lord Victorious
7 and here 11 are just "Your plan is stupid, you're stupid, and you just called down the thunder!".
the Dr is a Galefreyan Timelord and River is a Human Timelord
They give me the shivers every time
yes he speaks baby. STORMAGEDDON!!!!!
And we finally made it to this episode! One of the best of Matt Smith's run for sure. I would even be so bold as to say it's one of the most satisfying twists in the entire series.
The sad thing is when you remember that the Doctor actually did have children, and grandchildren
*"They've taken Amy. And our baby."*
Rory says this to River Song.
River Song IS Melody Pond.
Deja vu over here....
Night Terrors is an episode I forgot existed. The rest are indeed solid.
Series 6, the series where you end up with more questions than answers...
Well, you would have more questions if you forget to actually watch episodes 7, 8 and 13 while they're playing in front of you.
@@bigfatcarp93 when did they do that?
This is my favourite episode of the Matt Smith era. I'm glad you boys enjoyed this!
Centurions entry always gives me the chills..so epic.
I think this was the episode where Matt Smith became one with the Doctor. And won over the fans in my view. His acting in this episode was spot on.
The reveal is finally here!
It's not a full circle yet though :v
Is Vastra's origin really from this episode? She's not from the classic era? If not, how is she related to those Silurians in 2020?
Azizul Adnan I think vastra actually originates from big finish
This is when she's first introduced. The Silurians in the classic era were in much smaller groups than the civilisation depicted in series 5, and looked very different. The modern redesign was explained as being a different branch of the species. There's a tiny bit of backstory given in this episode. If I remember right, she's the only survivor of another small group underneath London. I wouldn't be surprised if Big Finish later did an origin story for her.
@@TheMoonRover I don't know about an origin story, but Big Finish is doing a Paternoster Gang series. www.bigfinish.com/news/v/the-paternoster-gang-return
TheMoonRover Question: why do the modern female Silurians have obvious mammary glands?
dvader518
I guess they didn't want to bind/hide the actress' breasts just for scientific accuracy. Also, the show has never cared for accuracy.
I can"t wait to see them reacting to The Time of the Doctor! I know it's still so far from now but I just can't wait. So emotional.
John Barrowman was supposed to be in this episode as Captain Jack, but he was busy filming Torchwood at the time. I think it's canon that he is assumed to have been there at Demon's Run even though we didn't get to see him.
When this aired in the UK it was the mid series (season) finale. We had to wait five months or so for episode 8.
Alfie 0202 two months
We had to wait from the beginning of June to the end of August. 3 months basically. Not 5
Speaking about meaning of "doctor" probably done with Japanese connotations (along with swords etc in this episodes): "sensei" is used for for all three categories - medical doctors (healers), scientists and teachers (wise men) and martial art masters (warriors)
Aaaah! This reminded me how much I LOVED & miss Eleven.
the break between episodes was a few months (part 1 in spring, part 2 in fall)
This is the episode Jack was meant to become the Head of Boe via Headless Monks
Fight him, not praise him! Praising costs way more.
I love this episode and you guys did a fantastic reaction! I love it!
“Today is not the day to find out why I have so many” Capaldi would have owned that line
The Doctor's job on Gallifrey was a Scrutationary Archivist in the Bureau of Possible Events. basically he was a Civil Servant.
1-day old Melody telling the Doctor that his bowtie sucks and the Tardis' noise annoys her sounds just like River to me.
Makes me cry every time
I love how Eric's automatic reaction was to call her Melody Pond too.
It also makes sense and a hint that Riversong says 'Sweetie'. When we are older we repeat phrases we overhear as children. The eyepatch calls peoplemSweetie, she probably called the baby that as she grew up as well ;)
One of my all time favorite episodes. Thanks for letting us watch it again with you guys.
WHERE IS MY WIFE the best moment of the last centurion
That smirk at 1:23 from Aaron killed me, because he knows what Demons Run is
Interestingly, only in this episode, TARDIS sounds can be heard during the opening credits.
When they were laughing at ‘time head’ I was just like ohhhh shiiiiiit
Favourite episode ever! I’ve been waiting for this reaction and it was WONDERFUL
I’ve been looking forward to this
This is where the fun begins
(well, that was actually The Eleventh Hour)

coladict nah
you know, I always assumed the Time Lord/Galifreyan thing was like the Human/Earthling thing. You know, the Doctor is a Time Lord, but he is also from Galifrey, so he is a Galifreyan
More closer to the Human/Neanderthal dichotomy. The two major differences between a Time Lord and a Gallifreyan is regeneration and two hearts.
You gotta love the line" I'm old I'm fat I'm Blue"
Dabba dee Dabba da.
After the Pirates episode I couldn't wait to see their reaction to them in this episode :)
I’ve been waiting for this reaction for so long, so epic
The Doctor used to be the President of the Time Lords.
My body is ready
Vastra was in the previous episodes. Not TV though, it was PROSE audio dramas on the BBCone Radio.
(They're quite good btw, they are meant to be like the old fashioned radio serials like 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' when it was a radio show)
