"I think that's one hell of a bird" - This is peak Capaldi right here everyone.
It goes without saying that 'Heaven Sent' is a true masterpiece and a beautifully portrayed battling of grief, loss and fear with a triumphant resolution. Everything about this episode is pitch-perfect; Steven Moffat delivering his best story yet, Rachel Talalay's direction is flawless, Murray Gold's music is superb, the pacing and structuring works perfectly, plus the Veil was truly bloody terrifying! However, this was Peter Capaldi’s finest hour and he earned it big time. Plus, it delivers one of the best cliff-hangers in the show's history. For me, this was not just the standout story of the series, but it was Moffat's best story, Capaldi's best story, the best story of Modern Who, and quite possibly, the best Doctor Who story of all time.

This is my all time favorite episode of the show (though as a whole I hadn't liked the past few recent seasons) but unfortunately for me it's sort of like utopia from season 3 in that it was a masterpiece of an episode and such an epic set up but the payoff wasn't great in the finale

@@zeallust8542 imo the follow ups to those masterpieces to close out both seasons didn't even meet the "good" threshold for me lol. They were average or even below it I think tbh. You've got me wondering though if you can close out a season with something that's only "pretty good" if it was just preceded by a masterpiece and for the audience to find that acceptable. I can't think of an example atm lol. All I can think of are episodes from shows that then exceeded the set up or flat out failed in ending a season and were simply not good imo lol. So maybe that goes to your point that even if they're just good they fail and I then perceive them as bad though surely I'm blanking out on some example in my memory. I think I'm struggling because I often find it hard to recall everything I've watched and then remember what in each series belonged to each season and then each episode lol

    1) I loved how Capaldi got interrupted when he made progress. (only part way through a sentence just like he was part way through the wall)

This is the straight up best episode of Doctor Who. I don't care about your angels. I don't care your casts. This episode takes the main character, gives him no actual characters to play off, and sparks the ONE episode everyone always compares to Blink. It's the polar opposite to Blink, and that is why this is the best DW episode of all time. Sure, Blink had the best story and playthrough - but Heaven Sent is so good because it is ONLY the Doctor, not the absence of the Doctor.
And with ONLY the Doctor, it gave us a story that simultaneously made us never able to properly understand her sacrifice for her friend, while also admitting the same while trying to protect their friends. The angels were so dangerous, they would never risk the lives of anyone who were not capable of dealing with their infestation, which the dealees did
Moffat struck unbelievably largely out with this

_There was once on a time a shepherd boy whose fame spread far and wide because of the wise answers which he gave to every question. The King of the country heard of it likewise, but did not believe it, and sent for the boy. Then he said to him, “If thou canst give me an answer to three questions which I will ask thee, I will look on thee as my own child, and thou shalt dwell with me in my royal palace.” The boy said, “What are the three questions?” The King said, “The first is, how many drops of water are there in the ocean?” The shepherd boy answered, “Lord King, if you will have all the rivers on earth dammed up so that not a single drop runs from them into the sea until I have counted it, I will tell you how many drops there are in the sea.”_
_The King said, “The next question is, how many stars are there in the sky?” The shepherd boy said, “Give me a great sheet of white paper,” and then he made so many fine points on it with a pen that they could scarcely be seen, and it was all but impossible to count them; any one who looked at them would have lost his sight. Then he said, “There are as many stars in the sky as there are points on the paper; just count them.” But no one was able to do it._
_The King said, “The third question is, how many seconds of time are there in eternity.” Then said the shepherd boy, “In Lower Pomerania is the Diamond Mountain, which is two miles and a half high, two miles and a half wide, and two miles and a half in depth; every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on it, and when the whole mountain is worn away by this, then the first second of eternity will be over.”_
_The King said, “Thou hast answered the three questions like a wise man, and shalt henceforth dwell with me in my royal palace, and I will regard thee as my own child.”_

Well folks, we're finally here. We're finally at one of the best, arguably _the_ best, episodes of Doctor Who ever. It's not all downhill from here, don't worry. Series 10 is good, while 11... I wouldn't say it's bad but at the same time I wouldn't say it's good. But that's a discussion for when we get there. The real reason that The Doctor couldn't see Clara's face during the whole episode, is that her back was the last thing he saw of her when she was alive. Seeing her face at the end, is a way to show that she was still alive in his mind. Being his conscious and his carer, being more than just a memory. That's sad and beautiful at the same time. I just love the complexity of their relationship
