Blue Box Man: very insightful. And a very clever analysis of the Doctor. I wouldn't have thought of it. He can be very dark at times and he knows he has to hold to the rules because if he doesn't he'd be just like his enemies. Worse than the Master. So he has to tow the line. Also he needs to have companions travel with him so they can be his moral compass. Otherwise he'd be just like the Dreamlord or Valeyard.

Yes it was very effective. And I have no idea how the Tardis has more knowledge than The Doctor - unless it has imbibed info from experiences with a previous user. But then I never understood the whole Idris thing anyway. Best to just go with it...

    • @xexasperon

its vague, but it is said that the tardis exists across all space and time. Idris even mentions having saved more "desktops" (tardis control rooms) than the Dr. has experienced - future control rooms. So it would stand to reason that she has information from the future (which is also an explanation of why she takes the Dr. places he doesnt ask to go. she has the overview of the big picture and knows things the Dr. doesnt)

Thanks Eva. To be honest that sounds somewhat like a catch-all capable of explaining just about anything and everything rather along the lines of an improbabiity drive crossed with the Discworld million-to-one chance theory. But I appreciate the thought.

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 5 лет назад +7

@@WolfGratz (Just jumping in late, >casts Necrothread< lol) It isn't so much it being a "catch-all" explanation but rather a legitimate POV for the Tardis. From *our* (and even The Doctor's/Timelords') POV(s), the Tardis *does* exist across all of time and space, including the myriad sub-realities within the universe we perceive. That's why it's capable of traveling/existing "anywhere/when". The trick, though, is that the Tardis' consciousness is so vast/multi-dimensional (it exists in 11 dimensions, including 3 temporal ones) it has trouble focusing/existing in any particular point/reality. That's where the machinery and telepathic/temporal awareness of the Timelords/Gallifreyans come into the picture. They act as conduits through which the Tardis can experience the universe on a more compressed level, while the Doctor/"we" get to have a very small taste of what existence across multiple temporal realities is like.
It sounds/reads as a bit heady and complicated, but when you take a step back it's actually a bit simpler than it sounds... especially if you have a couple drinks and/or smoke something first... lol ;)

If we take “The Doctor” to be the Doctor’s name - even if it is in the form of a title no doubt meaning something deep and Gallifreyan - perhaps our earthly use of the word “doctor” meaning healer or wise man is direct result of the Doctor’s multiple interventions in our history as a healer and wise man. In other words, we got it from him. This is a very silly idea and I’m consequently rather proud of it" - Steven Moffat, 1995

In this case the person doing the spoiling wasn't being a bit too enthusiastic (like ChanCeNeck maybe), but was malciously puting in a lot of effort to deliberately spoil Jess (and other reactors). CCN - just don't talk about future episodes at all - pretend you don't know what's commng when you write your comments.

Super reaction, I've been waiting so long. Thank you. Stephen Moffat (show runner) told Alex Kingston (the actress who plays River Song) what her backstory was right near the beginning, but kept it a secret from the rest of the cast until this episode. Apparently Kingston loved having a secret. You *must* now watch a minisode called "Demon's Run, Three Days Later". It was recorded the following year but story-wise fits after "A Good Man Goes To War" ... it was made to prevent a plot hole from showing up next series. The prequel minisode/trailers for both these two episodes are fun too. (Okay, too late I guess, but you might still get a kick out of them.)

Even if the destination was spoiled this time, the journey with you was still incredible. Really very wonderful, Jess. Obviously, a lot of things on the way still did not get spoiled, and that's great. :)
They certainly left no doubt that Rory has taken several levels in badassness (while still being good ol' Rory). I shared your excitement at the ensemble of characters showing up. I was glad to see that knowing about the ending revelation wasn't able to blunt the impact of how it all came about. That said, I hope that you _do not_ get spoiled further on the story lines. There's all sorts of good stuff on the way.
As always, looking forward to next time. Please, take your time and don't sweat it with schedules. I just appreciate that you do this at all. See you then!

I really enjoy watching your videos, and this one was a special treat :) Admittedly, I only watch your Doctor Who ones (and I went back and watched some of your older Downton Abbey ones), just because I am unfamiliar with the other shows, so I don't want to be spoiled on them if ever I see them obviously. But it is a lot of fun, and I love how many of your Doctor Who reactions have been similar to mine. I love the 11th Doctor so much as well (I think he's my favourite!!) and his little "gang" of Amy, Rory and River Song; Donna/Wilfred and even Martha were very dear to me back in the day but there is something really special about the 11th Doctor and his run with his companions :). Regarding being spoiled about the ending, that must have been a bit sad for you, but I still get all the feels and absolutely love rewatching that ending - as you said, it always sends shivers down my spine, and was beautifully performed by Matt Smith and Alex Kingston! The way the Eleventh Doctor reacts was absolutely wonderful, and I just felt so so sad for Amy and Rory, and even River!! So glad you enjoyed the episode!! ^_^

Isn't it basically giving away at the start who Melody is? Like Rory says he has a question from him and the Doctor, question being "Where is my wife?". Then the cyber men ask what the Doctor's question is and Rory is like "Would you like me to repeat the question?"
Like am I not understanding something that everyone else is or does he straight up give us the answer to who River Song is at the start of the episode?

I hope you don't get spoiled any more, though truly you're right - it's amazing you dodged this one for so long! I got spoiled for the Face of Boe reveal a few years back. Don't apologise - I think the spoiler you got was nether the most shocking moment (amy's flesh baby) nor the most 'squeee' worthy moment (either the cracking intro, or, in your case, Pirates!) or the saddest moment (the Doctor lying to Lorna). I figured they'd mostly spoilt the wrong things from your perspective. :-)
BTW - the whole 'the word for healer across the universe is 'Doctor' - we get that from you..' which River says to the Doctor toward the end is an idea that Moffat had way, way back in the mid-nighties and posted it on the internet forums of it's day. He described it as a 'very silly idea, of which he is rather proud'.
Also - did you miss the terrible Stevie Wonder joke? And that 'Colonel Runaway' scene

    • @lawrencegough

Dave F yeah I actually found the River reveal reasonably predictable (for Moffat). The real sucker punch is the ganger baby. Oh that hurt. Karen Gillan acted her socks off at the end of this episode, she looked devastated.

I started watching the show from series 5, and from what I had heard I thought that though it was a good entry point for those who wanted to skip the initial wonky cgi seasons, David Tennant would ultimately be the best Doctor. However, I absolutely fell in love with Matt Smith from the very first time I saw him in the Eleventh Hour. He was PERFECT! He was funny, eccentric, alienish, lovely and just absolutely wonderful. I remember binge watching the whole of season 5, 6 and 7 over a few days. He was just so endearing. I loved the Doctor because Matt Smith made him so wonderful. Once Matt's run was over and I had to move on to the episodes with the other doctors, I remember pausing those episodes and just feeling this wave of unhappiness and disappointment that I was watching Dr who but I could not watch Matt Smith anymore. I remember trying to go back to the David Tennant seasons..and boy oh boy did they feel disappointing after I had just seen and fell in love with Matt Smith's Doctor. I don't know, although I absolutely love David Tennant as an actor and as a person, his Doctor just absolutely pales in comparison to Matt Smith's Doctor. I just could not get through his episodes, barring a few, without them feeling like a drag which never happened with Eleven. However, once I got to season 8, I just fell in love with Capaldi. I swear if anyone can even compare to Matt's Doctor in any way, it has to be Capaldi. He is just outstanding. I think it's the way the Doctor is written. RTD focused too much on the companions whereas Moffat focuses on the Doctor's character. That's why both his Doctors in my opinion are a level above all the others (Though matt remains my favourite). I can't help but feel that David Tennant's Doctor is grossly overrated and he often overshadows the other Doctors who are also brilliant. Don't take me wrong. I adore him DT. But his Doctor is definitely not the best. In any case Eleven and Twelve are equally if not more amazing.

There are those of us who fell in love at the time with Tennant's portrayal of the tortured Doctor trying to put a brave face on things.
It could be looked at in terms of 10 as the necessary bridge between 9's self-hatred and survivor's guilt in the wake of the Time War, and 11's ability to carry his pain alongside genuine joie de vivre.
Personally, I still prefer 10's Doctor, as I prefer the portrayal of someone who's on a journey from self-hatred to painful self-acceptance.
Of course it's wonderful for anyone to fall in love with any Doctor, and I'm glad that you and Jess fell for 11.
But 10 could never be a drag for me. His tenure, characterisation and actions were a huge and treasured influence on my worldview when I first watched, and I owe a lot of inspiration to him.
So I guess we're all inspired by different things. It's part of what makes life wonderful. 🙂

@@rtozier2011 Doctor Who as a show has a very personal relationship with it's viewers, in the sense that it belongs to everyone and at the same time everyone has a unique ownership of it. There's something there for everyone. It's what resonates with you that determines which era or which Doctor becomes your favourite. A lot of people love 10 because he was the Doctor they grew up watching. I know i'll always love the 11th Doctor, because if it hadn't been for him I would not have fallen in love with the show. I love 12 because his story of determination and love and kindness really inspires me to be a better person in my own life..

Alex Kingston recently did a reaction of her character's iconic moments throughout the series, and the reveal of her identity was one of them. Well, you did it again, Sess. You made me tear up again in a reaction. Several times. :P (In a good way! And also made me laugh a lot of times too!) That was an amazing reaction.
I was actually also spoiled about River (a friend of mine thought I'd already seen the episode and texted me about it), but I agree - I don't think it takes away that much at all. There are so many reaction-worthy moments in this episode, and as you say, the mysteries about River are far from solved. AND I think that knowing it already when watching, you pick up on some things. Like, River and Rory meeting in the prison, and how you understood what was happening there.
Top reactions in this one was definitely - everything Rory, - pirates, - everything River and - Flesh baby (that's still so heartbreaking).
Fun fact, Alex Kingston, who plays River, was told about her backstory before she filmed her first episode with Amy, so she could act accordingly, and all the other actors had a kind of mini competition to get her to spill the secret (I think Arthur Darvill/Rory was the first one who actually figured it out).
But gah, I love this episode so much. It's such a great showcasing of the Doctor's character, and to what extremes he'll go just to help out. And I think it shows the fluctuations in his character between being very childlike and very old so well. And Rory in this episode have some of the most badass Doctor Who moments ever.
There's a short minisode after this one that you might want to check out - though I don't think you'd have to react to it. The name of it slipped my mind at the moment though. :P I think it might be Demon's Run - Two days later? something like that?
And for when you've gotten further in, there's of course a million people who've tried to put together different River appearances in HER chronological order. You obviously can't see those videos yet, but at some point in the future, maybe.
Anyway, this was a GREAT reaction. Don't apologize about the spoiler. It sucks, but it's not your fault. It happens. :)
Hugs for everything going on, and hopefully this episode managed to cheer you up a bit, even though it might be small in comparision to all the things going on. I'm glad to see you back either way. Looking forward to next time. :)
