    I've been waiting for Paula's reaction to this, and it was perfect!
    And yes, Alex knew from the beginning. Moffat told her about River's character all the way back at Silence (hint hint) In the Library so Alex could play the character right. And people have edited together River's story in chronological order for her and Alex's acting is perfect for the character growth. She deserved all the awards for this character.

      Alex didn’t know from the beginning apparently she was told at the start of series 6. Rivers story does seem like this massively convoluted well thought out story but you’ve got to remember, it’s written backwards and so is easier than it seems. So for example when River mentions the Byzantium in series 4, it’s not because that whole arc has already been planned out, Moffat just has to remember to write a scene including a ship called the Byzantium at some point in the future. A good chunk of her story is very that. Throw out a few crumbs in one episode and just make sure those crumbs become plot points later on

    • @LadyDoomsinger
      @LadyDoomsinger Год назад +5

      @@obiwankenobi687 True - but you still have to remember what has happened from the Doctor's perspective, what has happened from River's perspective - and make sure neither character accidentally gets it wrong, or that the plot never contradicts anything (unless it can be written off as a lie or misunderstanding). Might not be a convoluted as it seems to the audience, but it's definitely not a trivial thing to write like that either - just the fact that Moffat thought of it as a concept is an incredible display of creative writing in its own right, and deserves credit.

    It’s so crazy that Moffat had been working this into the story line since Silence in the Library, leaving little clues here and there. One of the best slow burn reveals in TV history in my opinion.
    Also this is a few seasons away, but once you watch the Husbands of River Song episode, you should re-watch Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead. It’s so much more impactful watching it in context with their whole relationship because you understand the story from River’s point of view.

    Paula - Kudos for the light going on in your brain when you heard "the only water in the forest is the river". Not every reactor picked up on what that meant as far as "River's" name. Even though it was a dawning realization on your part, I could see the gears turning in your brain as your remembered what "Sexy Tardis" told Rory before she died. .. Even though Moffat kept this surprise ending from everyone until right before they filmed it, he has a pattern that he follows: HE said once that if there is a "reveal", you always want to leave some questions unanswered.. so stay tuned!

    Moffat fed Alex a lot of information about River way ahead of time so that she could act appropriately (I think she was told already in season 5, but cannot confirm it completely), but obviously she had to keep it a secret and the cast tried to bribe it out of her and she wouldn't budge. However Arthur actually did eventually piece together the idea as his own theory, and upon asking Alex she just replied "Hello dad", so he technically knew a little bit ahead of time because he had guessed it.

I'm pretty sure that she describes this situation earlier and it's what told me that she was the baby pretty early on.

    Like so many others, I have been waiting SO LONG for this episode, and Paula's reaction was totally worth it. This episode broke her. It's one of my all-time favorites. One of the great things with Doctor Who is that the non-linear time dynamic (and the amazing writing) enables moments like this that have all the effects of a retcon, but really aren't because they're deliberately planned in advance. Just like Katrina said at the end, after this reveal you can go back and watch earlier episodes and pick up on little character interactions (like River and Amy in the series opener) and other tiny details that you probably overlooked as insignificant, that suddenly mean so much. I can't wait to see how Paula fares with the rest of the series!

    Well, I certainly didn't expect Paula to react to the revelation in that way...
    I really enjoy A Good Man Goes to War. Moffat throws everything and the kitchen sink into the episode, piling in countless setpieces and epic visuals that take us on a proper emotional rollercoaster from ecstatic highs to brutal lows, in a sense making this feel very similar to The Pandorica Opens from last series. Matt Smith gives a fantastic performance as the angry vengeful Doctor, with his scenes opposite Colonel "Runaway" Manton being a particularly good depiction of this Doctor being one who hides his volatile emotions under all the quirks and silly personality traits associated with him. I love the way the episode gets you to bask in the glory of seeing the Doctor use his reputation to threaten his enemies into retreating, before you realise that, as River points out, his reputation is precisely why they've kidnapped Melody and plan to use her as a weapon. Not to mention the abundance of fantastic lines here, especially "good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many", which reveals that the "good man" of the title actually refers not to the Doctor, but to Rory.
    Rory is definitely the MVP for series 6. Much like Mickey, we've seen him grow from being a bumbling somewhat unadventurous dork to being a brave and courageous hero (though where Mickey did this by deciding to stop following Rose, Rory does this by sticking with Amy and trying to keep up with her). Arthur Darvill is fantastic here, clearly relishing the chance to show off Rory's action hero cred, while also nailing the more emotional scenes with Amy. The supporting characters are all loads of fun, adding a great deal of levity to what ultimately turns out to be the "darkest hour" for our heroes. With all the explosive action scenes, cool speeches, and emotional gut-punches (that scene where Melody is revealed to be a Ganger is particularly horrifying), the twist that River is actually Melody grown up actually ends up being one of the least interesting aspects of the episode. That said though, it's a good reveal, one that's been very well set-up throughout the episode, and a sequence that brings the first half of series 6 to a very satisfying close

    I love this episode. The best episode in this series imo and also one of Smith's best. I'd say it's easily in his top 5. The rollercoaster of emotions, the twists and turns, just wow. I like the prologue with River and Rory because they very cleverly utilise River Song's perspective (as she's from the future) to basically set us up for the rest of the episode. River tells us right at the start that the Doctor's about to find out who she really is. However, she also refuses to help, which was very shocking at that point (of course we later find out that she couldn't help because she couldn't interfere with events that occurred in her own past, which creates a number of inconsistencies from earlier on in the series, but I'll get back to that at a later date), but she also tells us that the Doctor's about to achieve his greatest victory anyway. That he's about to rise up higher than he ever has before, but would then fall down so much lower. All of this put a lot of mystery and intrigue into the episode, more than there was already. We wanted to find out what all of that meant and I think the episode mostly delivered. I say "mostly" only because they probably oversold the Doctor rising up higher than he ever has before. I think the Doctor's had greater victories. Defeating the Daleks and Cybermen simultaneously comes to mind. He's also fallen lower than he did here. In fact, a great example is losing Rose and the rest of the Tylers from that same story. In this story he may have been tricked into losing Amy and Rory's baby, but that baby turned out to be River Song anyway. So is it really that bad? What they absolutely delivered on though is the River Song reveal! The way they executed it was just brilliant. Kingston and Smith's acting was just fantastic and the music was also absolutely beautiful. Another thing I really liked about the episode is the "Colonel Runaway" scene. Smith was incredible there, I love his delivery of the line "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many". One of his very best moments in the role. In fact, I think that scene is one of the greatest moments for ANY actor in the role. I also love the scene between the Doctor and Lorna, when he pretends to remember her to try to keep her spirits up as she's about to die. Such a sad scene that really serves to highlight how many people the Doctor inspires, without even realising he does. It also reveals how messed up his life has become and River Song turns up at the end to really drive that point home. And what she says is definitely true! The Doctor taking it upon himself to fight injustice wherever he encounters it has made him a huge target. It has basically ruined the lives of those closest to him. It's really interesting to get the other perspective and see that to certain people, it's the Doctor who's the biggest "monster". I also think the moment Amy's baby turns into goo is very disturbing, but a brilliant moment of horror all the same.
    You might've noticed that this episode was a little too big and epic for an episode 7. That's explained by the fact that this was a mid series finale. We had to wait six weeks for the next one! This episode left us on a massive cliffhanger, we had absolutely no idea what would happen next. Literally anything could've happened. This series had such a great opportunity to come back with a bang after a break. At this point, the series and story arc were going quite well, despite some things being messy. The series could've gone anywhere after this episode had set everything up so brilliantly. You're lucky that you get to watch the next episode straight away! Yeah, "lucky"....

    Back in season 5, there was a short comment discussion on what Alex Kingston got to know and what the show runners had planned, and I mentioned that there was one aspect of her character that either hadn't been decided on or even thought of, but I couldn't mention it because it was a spoiler for next (this) season. And here we are.
    They hadn't actually decided on whether River was going to be Amy's daughter back then, as they hadn't decided which direction the story was going. But I'm glad they went that way.

    You know what I love, Alex Kingston always knew, as did Moff of course, but you know who DIDN'T know? David Tennant. He was so confused that he assumed she was a future regeneration of the Doctor. Not that it made much sense but it made more sense than any other idea he had.
