My favourite part of this episode is probably the way Amy is made to be an audience surrogate figure. She was abandoned as a child by the Doctor, and so when he returns she's naturally sceptical and resentful towards him. Likewise, we the audience are going in with the baggage of losing David Tennant, and we're naturally sceptical of Matt Smith and his ability to play the Doctor. The scene where he asks Amy to "believe (him) for 20 minutes" also feels like he's asking US to see him and trust him to play the Doctor as well. I think it's fair to say he succeeded.
Matt is absolutely fantastic, nailing the character's ancient weariness in spite of having the face of a 27 year old. He's incredibly goofy and silly, yet he manages to still feel reassuring and commanding. Karen Gillan is also brilliant; sassy, and sarcastic, yet clearly showing a very kind and vulnerable side, and her chemistry with Matt is wonderful. The direction is great, the script is packed with great one-liners, and the music is phenomenal, easily some of Murray Gold's best work. Series 5 is my absolute favourite series of Doctor Who, and I'm looking forward to re-experiencing it with you two!

@@ciarantc7881 I hate to say it but I think mine for Capaldi proper first time round was Flatline confronting the creatures. A lot of that season was, in hindsight, the Doctor trying to understand the Doctor and watching it the first time round it only really hit me that he was close to understanding it at that moment. I think that's alright though, because also in hindsight I absolutely adore that storyline throughout S8. It's a fantastic examination of the character 2000 years into his life. I also heavily heavily doubt any modern Who except maaaaaybe Tennant could've achieved anywhere near the same results with it as Capaldi did.

While it's true Karen Gillan had never met her cousin (Caitlin Blackwood), she did know of her and recommended her for the role. Caitlin still had to audition, and though she'd never acted before she got the role. She's continued to act, and recently starred in a short film called Sundown alongside Fraser Hines (who played Jamie McCrimmon, the 2nd Doctor's companion in the 1960s) - ruclips.net/video/yxdHeDgmniQ/видео.html She looks even more like Karen Gillan now!

I actually found it harder because it was so "new" I was so used to David Tennant as he was the Doctor when I first watched it growing up and then went back to watch 9 properly after Series 2 when I properly loved it. So to have nothing carrying on from that to make it familiar at all was hard to take and because of that I still don't like 11 as much as I properly should. 10 was just too hard to follow, especially given my nostalgia.

I'm never seen any reactor comment on this, but I'm pretty sure the food thing comes straight out of Winnie The Pooh. When Tigger first comes to the wood he says that "Tiggers like everything," but then tries a whole load of things for breakfast that it turns out he doesn't like. What he eventually goes for is not fishfingers and custard, but Roo's strengthening medicine, but otherwise it's exactly the same. And there is something definitely Tiggerish about Matt Smith.

I thought, and still think, that Moffat's full time writing for Doctor Who is pure garbage. The Doctor was taken from being a living legend who always had the whole field in his mind, always had a plan, to a child who literally never did anything implying intelligence that had to flounder his way through every episode until he accidentally put the square peg in the proper hole.

I'm sorry Paula, are you honestly saying that the Doctor has ever been reliable? Lol. I loved 11 from the start, you can just tell he's going to be zany and fun. I think I would have struggled if they'd cast someone darker like Eccleston was straight after Tennant. Another great reaction.

It is fun watching a couple of newbies. Your comments about Matt Smith echo the sentiments that we had back when Tom Baker left the show. But we knew Peter Davidson from Hitchhiker's Guide so we were excited to see how he did.

Glad to see you back in action!

The 11th Doctor was always my favorite, I liked all the other Doctors too, but the 11th stood out as something special to me; not just because of the actor, but the writing. The show kind of adopted a sort of "fairy tale" feel to it during Moffats era, and as someone who always leaned more to fantasy than sci-fi (though I enjoy both), I greatly enjoyed that change in the mood.

YAY!! Welcome back girls! Im so happy youre back on this journey together. Also it was originall intended for tennant to be in series 5 which is why some of the stories feel like something tennant could have done which is why many people had a hard time with the transition. He unexpectedly decided he would leave with russell t davies so they had to get a new doctor and rework some of the episodes a bit.

@@robvanriot ok ok they didnt write specifically for tennant but the plan was for tennant to do season 5 and i think thats why they did those specials and had such a long gap between seasons 4 and 5 because they had to get a new doctor and do the transition because tennant and davies were leaving. Also there are absolutley more than a few episodes in series 5 that were written before tennant left.

Can’t wait to see what you think!

After months of wandering aimlessly on the web, i have made it back to the oasis that is The Gallifrey Gals Who reactions. (BTW, you need a WHO version of fan/newb for your Wibbly Wobbly intro). Paula, i hope you love the future episodes as much as i have and Katrina, good luck with keeping those secret knowing looks hidden and/or repressed.. While 9 is my favorite Doctor personality and 10 has some of the best episodes ever written, the 11 team and overall arc is phenomenal and the reason DW exploded in popularity on this side of the pond. I just wish you hadn't seen River in the trailer cause the entrance is LEGEN... wait 14 years for it cause the Doctor has Tardis timing issues.... DARY

I've been watching Doctor Who since I was a child in the 80s. The thing about Matt Smith's Doctor that makes him my all time favourite is the way his performance blends the characteristics and personalities of *all* of the previous Doctors. One moment I'll see the third Doctor in him, the next it'll be Seven, or Four, or Nine. Matt's Doctor is the most *The Doctor* that I've ever seen.
Also, I loved that Matt's Doctor finally put an end to the worst New Who trope: companions falling in love with the Doctor. They acknowledged it, and then put a stop to it right away, and thank goodness.

Karen Gillan didn't push for her cousin as such. They were actually having trouble finding a little girl with not just *a* Scottish accent but the *correct* Scottish accent, from the specific part of Scotland Gillan was from. (I'm guessing people getting that wrong was a bugbear of Scottish showrunner Steven Moffat). They couldn't find one so approached Gillan in desperation to ask if she had a little sister or anyone like that she could suggest. It's all the more impressive considering Blackwood (the cousin) wasn't an actor, and wasn't even a drama school kid or anything. She'd never even been in a school play before she showed up on set.

12 is my favourite Doctor, but for my money this episode is the best opener to both a new Doctor and a season of Who as a whole, though Rose and Deep Breath aren't too far behind for me either
