According to Alex Kingston, Steven Moffat told her the story of River Song since "The Pandorica opens" and she was the only cast member to know that truth, in order to play with that background. This twist wasn't even in the episode's script so they didn't know what Kingston was about to say.
There's an online picture of him - actually lots of the same picture - captioned "Time's New Roman". Wish I knew who originated that brilliant pun. He's a hero who doesn't mind calling the doctor to account - and going alone on a Cyber ship …
He really gets 5h@t on, oddly never respected unless he performs some life saving feat. Amy discarded him the night before her wedding. She ignored him when he was on the TARDIS until forced to by The Doctor. It really made Rory and Amy's relationship feel forced. I think I felt more chemistry between Rose and Mickey 😬

If it was just her leaving to explore space with what was a childhood imaginary friend, I would've looked on the story more kindly and really felt the cold feet angle. Imo, they really messed up Amy's character. It's supposed to be obvious she loves Rory but they have a terrible beginning of married life and split because Amy can't bring herself to communicate with Rory. Again, I could understand if Amy left Rory with the reason "I'll never have kids so bye" but Amy threw an emotional Molotov at Rory in the hopes he'll leave her. Full on dragged him through the coals so he would give up. They made Amy toxic AF and that makes her entire being really out of place in a kids/YA show. While I love Matt Smith's portrayal, his stint was really the beginning of the end. Capaldi was a plaster/bandaid to a leaky lung and everything after him is fan fiction.
The only water in the forest is the River!!! The fact that River Song's name is translated from English then to the language of the Gamma Forest then BACK to English is brilliant.
So as others have mentioned, Captain Jack was going to return for this episode, and many people theorize that he would have taken Doriums' place, getting decapitated by the Headless Monks. Which is how he would become the Face of Boe
Some people complain about S6, and it does have its faults, but I love it so much. There are so many clues pointing towards River being who she is, and yet it's totally shocking at the same time.

During the two parter where River is introduced, I remember you theorised in an off the cuff way if she could be Donna's future daughter. I remember shouting at the screen "Wrong! But owe close but still no cigar!" Right theory wrong companion!" Then you never once revisited that notion again.
One of the things Moffatt is always good at is hiding things in plain sight. Don’t feel bad for not getting it but the most obvious clue was there all along - River Song/ Melody Pond!
He also keeps you too distracted throughout the episode with other stuff, so that you're too busy to stop and think what's the big reveal you're approaching.
There's A LOT I love about this episode. * Strax. Every line is treasure * Vastra and Jenny and their subtle flirting * The way the Church of the future is portrayed. "We're here to fight him, not praise him. Praising costs way more!" * Matt's shocked face when he realises they were there on their wedding night * Rory turning absolutely badass for his wife, invoking his Centurion training and two thousand years experience guarding the Pandorica * Amy's scream when the baby turned to goo. Karen's delivery was exactly the kind of horrified screech you'd expect * The Doctor apologising to her after was also an incredible delivery by Matt * Laurna Bucket and her exchange with the Doctor I'm sure there's more that I could list, but this is already plenty.
One of the subtle moments I love in this episode is when Strax is dying and rory ( A nurse literally dressed up as a warrior) says "come on, you're a warrior" And he's just like "Rory.....I'm a nurse" Such a powerful moment that most people miss because we forget that Rory is a nurse
Fun fact: Remember back in season 3 when Jack revealed he was the Face of Boe? Well John Barrowman was supposed to be brought back for this episode but the filming conflicted with another show he was doing. The plan was to have him get beheaded by one of the headless monks, over time turning him into the Boe we know.
Oh this plot twist... I jumped off the couch when i saw that years ago and walked back and forth on what just happened while my boyfriend sat on the couch laughing at my reaction. My favorite WTF Plot-twist ever
I think S7 would like to speak with you for a minute, in private. I do like 5&6 but 7 was more of a clusterfuck story wise than any of Capaldi’s seasons. I do agree Capaldi had amazing themes though, unparalleled.

This is actually my favourite episode of this series, it’s so dramatic and each time river does her monologue I get goosebumps! It’s so well acted and portrayed.
Moffat’s a friggin genius and it kills me so much to see people hating on Season 6 when he planned everything out to the last detail... In fact, there are very few non-explainable plotholes throughout his run and people just hate on him because they can’t understand it

Captain Jack was originally supposed to appear in this episode and he would have had his head cut off, explaining how he would become the Face of Boe. But there was scheduling conflicts and he couldn’t appear in the episode

Captain Jack was originally supposed to appear in this episode and he would have had his head cut off, explaining how he would become the Face of Boe. But there was scheduling conflicts and he couldn’t appear in the episode
