It's actually kid of weird how when people are recommended by their friends to watch Doctor Who 'Blink' is often one of the strongest recommendations. As a show every episode or 2 parter is often it's own idependent story so picking a mini story isn't the odd bit, it's that there's hardly any of the Doctor in it at all. Maybe it's because it's a story that requires so little knowledge of all the technical mumbo jumbo that people can just get into it. Also it's a masterfully written script and really really well directed.

As someone who got into Doctor Who by watching Blink, it's actually a really great episode to start with because not only do you have the mystery of the episode, but of the Doctor and his role/character overall. Having him be barely in it actually stokes curiosity in his character and the series as a whole.

And strangely enough, people recommend it a lot, and it's one of only episodes that is NOT in the perspective of The Doctor, and also strangely enough, it's my favorite.

Skipping Eccleston and ignoring the classics are the true sins. (I love em all but Eccleston and Tom Baker are my personal favs). I've only been a Whovian for i think 7 years now and I'm still working on watching the classics. (Not nonstop I take my time and return to it now and again). I just want to say its worth it and seeing the show as a whole is incredible. I'm glad you guys are considering watching more I love your stuff!

I remember my best friend Drew showing me a couple episodes of Smith, and I immediately starting watching from Eccleston, catching up to the show (including the 1996 movie, minisodes, and spin-offs) a week before the 50th Anniversary, and I’m glad I saw it live. After watching An Adventure in Space in Time later that day, I decided to jump around the Classic era a lot with recommended episodes for each Classic Doctor, plus every Multi-Doctor episode. Then I listened to a bunch of audios and bought some comics. Eventually Capaldi became my Doctor. I have a TARDIS tattoo and will soon get a Weeping Angel one above it. I can still remember calling Drew half-way through the episode “Rose” saying, “This is cheesy as hell! I can’t explain why, but I love it. You sure it’s worth it to go on this journey? I know you’ve spent a lot of time diving into the lore, but is it really something I’d truly love?”. I still laugh thinking about it to this day. Doctor Who is in my opinion, the greatest show ever made, and I can’t imagine my life without it now.

But a slightly more understandable one. Not everyone can cope with B/W t.v. programs, also some people are more bothered by the effects than the great stories. All we can hope, is once someone becomes a Whovian, they will have the urge to learn how his journey started. :)

This was the first of only... 2 or 3 episodes of Dr. Who I have watched in its entirety, and I LOVE IT!
I also showed my mother the episode, and she was riveted, even though she knew nothing else at all about the show.
she used to have a water fountain in her bedroom with a cherub statue pouring out the water, looking at her bed...
She said she couldn't sleep well for like, 3 nights afterward because of that.
I like how Pat was all, "phsssst..." at the beginning, and ended up being the most freaked out, 'shirt up over his face' frightened by the end.
    Normies are the best.

I agree with Chris. I strongly suggest you guys search for the most acclaimed episodes. The show is still finding its legs in the very beginning (however I also love Eccleston), and with each regeneration, it's like starting over again, each actor trying to find his own rhythm. So it is wiser to do Chris's method. Also, IMDB rates Blink the #1 Doctor Who episode, Silence in the Library (which is actually a 2 parter) in the Top 5, and Vincent in the Top 10. I am so excited you guys are reacting to Doctor Who! This is my favorite tv show, and those, especially the Library, are some of my favorite episodes.

The mannequins in the very first episode was chosen as the villain because it was a revival of a classic monster. They were trying to appease and hook longtime watchers of the classic series. But at the same time hook a new audience. Remember that at the time, the only people who would be watching the revival first episode were original fans and maybe a few people who were curious. They had to hook the OG fans. But they also did not want to blow their first episode on Daleks or Cybermen. They picked a second tier villain that could try too hook new and old fans.

Great editing once again guys. I can seriously watch an entire video of you guys just shooting the shit. You are all that entertaining.
Now on to Doctor Who, this is more for Surj than Brown Pat (as he'll never want to watch this show again) but if you want a good idea of what this show is then starting off with Blink was a pretty good start but I would also recommend these episode as well since they run the gamut on the different style of storytelling the series does. From the Christopher Eccleston run the episodes Dalek and the Empty Child two parter. From the David Tennant run there is Human Nature/Family of Blood and also from Tennant Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (all two parters) and finally from Matt Smith I recommend The Doctor's Wife. If you don't enjoy the show after all these then your initial gut feeling was right and the show is not for you. Regardless I hope you give these a shot and film your reaction with the rest of the Normies.

I can't believe that one girl did not like Capaldi because of the sonic sunglasses. Dude, seriously! Please watch his episodes. The sonic screwdriver or sonic shades are just a plot device, they don't define the Doctor. In fact I think he totally rocked the sonic sunglasses...and he did get his own screwdriver as well later at the end of season 9. But seriously, he is the best actor to have ever played the Doctor. His performance is so deep and so nuanced and meaningful. I think the 12th Doctor is the perfect summation of who the Doctor is and what he stands for. He is amazing. I don't know when this particular video came out in Capaldi's run, but I don't think he has ever given a bad performance, even in season 8. Seasons 9 and 10 have some of the best episodes ever of Doctor Who.

Nahid is right, Eccleston was the Doctor who made the series popular, he was a very well known actor in the UK and Billie Piper was the famous singer and they raked in 10mill viewers together for the first episode, which propelled the series. Tennant was the Doctor when it went international and got a bigger budget/better storylines, he lasted for more then 1 series too, so more people tuned in while he was the Doctor but if Eccleston hadn't been such a hit, the show would have been cancelled after the first series.

The reason the T.A.R.D.I.S is a police box is because the 'Chameleon circuit' (its supposed to turn the T.A.R.D.I.S into something that blends into the environment) got broken/stuck when the Doctor made a trip to 1920s (i think).

Okay so they actually have a reason why the tardis looks like a police box. It has something called a chameleon circuit which is designed to scan the TARDIS's immediate surroundings upon arrival and transform the exterior into what would be the most inconspicuous for those surroundings. However, the doctor landed in 1960s London, the TARDIS turned into a blue police box, and the circuit malfunctioned and got stuck. That is why it looks like a blue police box.

It's in the contracts of the actors they get a short vacation during the season. So there is usually one episode a season where they don't appear much. They did both actors at the same time this year and made up a plot where neither appeared much, having all new actors.

Remember "Graphics" & "Budget" are never the be-all and end-all of some of these classic shows like Doctor Who. As some of you mention, it's the fantastic story telling and rich scripts that makes you lose one's self in DW.

Steven Moffat was a masterful writer in the Russel T Davies Era of Doctor Who. Just look at The Empty Child (two parter), The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Silence in the Library (two parter). No wander he took the role as head writer after Russell. Not to say he isn't now, (The Eleventh Hour, The Pandorica Opens, Heaven Sent), but he has definitely has gone downhill in his own era of Doctor Who. There are too many bad ones to name!

  • @chromosomeboo
    @chromosomeboo 7 лет назад +2

The show has always been meant for for kids and families and as a result the first season kept this in mind save for a few wink winks at the adult audience here and there. After Moffat took over, it became the hipster friendly show and saw huge ratings especially in the states.
To appreciate why the series became so big, I think you guys really need to set aside some time to see why the revival series became so loved and why some viewers have started to tune out because something is definitely off with the current series.
It would be very unfortunate for you all to miss out on Bad Wolf, Torchwood, Vote Saxon, Donna, and The Ponds. : )

The mannequins in the first episode of the Doctor Who reboot with the Ninth Doctor, are actually the Nestene Consciousness. They first appeared in the very 1st Third Doctor episode back in 1970. So, relaunching the show with an alien race that appeared in not only the classic Who series but in the introductory episode of a classic Doctor, was an homage to the original fans and original show.
As far as Nine goes, here are the must watch episodes:
    Dalek
    The Empty Child
    The Doctor Dances
    Bad Wolf
    The Parting of Ways
Those episodes encompass not only the best of Nine, but impart valuable historical, world-building information as well as critical character development.
Here's to hoping you fit in more Doctor Who reaction videos.

You don't have to watch all the early episodes, but there's some great standalone episodes in the first seasons that you guys could watch and enjoy before moving on to Matt Smith.
For Eccelston: Dalek, the empty child, the doctor dances, and you can maybe watch The parting of the ways
For Tennant: rose as companion- the girl in the fireplace, the impossible planet, satans pit
Martha as companion: smith and Jones, human nature, family of blood
Donna: runaway bride, partners in crime, fires of Pompeii, silence in the library, forest of the dead, midnight, turn left
    By himself: water of mars

Don't google best episodes and best monsters and just watch them. Most of the times the episodes have a season arc, and each episode is like a puzzle piece, especially the episodes in the Matt Smith and Capaldi era. Some episodes are not great as standalone episodes but add to the season as a whole.

I've never really twigged at the genius of The Weeping Angels as a tv monster until this moment.
Usually, when a monster appears on screen, your instinct is to turn your head, cover your eyes, hide behind the cushions, _anything_ to avoid seeing it. Perhaps it's the childish idea of "if you can't see it, it can't see you", although, if you think of it, we close our eyes at real horrors. If you're in an accident, your first instinct is to close your eyes, if only to be spared seeing the horrors of your own fate.
However, the Angels force you to keep looking at them! If you seek comfort behind a cushion or with your face nuzzled in a loved one's arm, _that's_ when they get you!
