HOW TO: clean fashion jewelry with one household product

- Опубликовано: 30 май 2013
- Here is a quick and easy tutorial on how to clean jewelry that is not made from real gold or silver. Jewelry becomes dull and dirty from the oils in your skin, the air, and just laying around. This is a good way to brighten up old fashion jewelry that you may have bought from Forever21, Charlotte Russe, etc.
All you need is:
-jewelry that needs to be cleaned
-any kind of toothpaste
-an old toothbrush
-a soft towel

This is the tip ive been using for years passed down from my great grandma. Works better if its a cheap white traditional toothpaste too. It works on real silver and gold.

Please do NOT use toothpaste on real gold or silver jewelry! You will damage it--I saw it too many times when I worked in a fine jewelry store.
Jessie Baker if something like (toothpaste!!) can hurt real expensive gold and not fake gold then why even buy the real thing ? 🤷🏽♂️
Whether this works or not it's a good idea to suggest putting the plug in the sink, or a washcloth, so nothing falls into the drain.
And, if you do that, then lay out a washcloth in the bottom of the sink too, to protect both the jewelry and the surface of the sink from dark marks, chips, etc from dropping things in it while you are working. It's difficult to be too careful with this!

OMG...thank you for posting this video! I was racking my brain trying I to figure out how to clean my favorite statement necklace. You're a life saver! 😃
Quick and to the point. Thanks!
This really works I used it on my necklace and now it looks really nice like it did before
It really worked I tried it today because I was about to just throw away my collection of jewelry away but thanks for the video it really helped
I just did it and it worked! It was a nice gold tone intricate design with simulated pearls. It was new, but so tarnished I was kind of embarrassed to wear it. I didn't have her Crest, I used my Crest "Brilliance" and I worked deliberately and quickly. I didn't want to dull the pearls. The Crest almost started to take the color off to where a copper color showed. Just be quick and stop the sink up in case you drop something. Thank you for the tip. I also used it on 2 silver tone bracelets. Again, working super fast with toothbrush. Bingo! Well actually I used in on a gold ring that has opal. Hard to clean with that opal. I worked super quick with toothbrush and rinsed quickly. Nice. First time that was cleaned in a long, long time. Again, much thanks and thank you for not making the video long and drawn out.
I thought this would'nt work, but nkw my jewlery looks like new THANKS!!
Try ketchup too leave it in 20 mins and it will shine like new

I seriously was about to be mad if I put toothpaste on my real gold chain. I tried everything the dish soap, the baking soda and it didn't work. But this of all things worked like a charm. Thank you. Cuz I really didn't want to buy jewelry cleaner from Walmart.

Gurl you deserve more subscribers
I have bought one chain from online it looks like covering what to do for that
So do you have to scrub for a while or maybe multiple times because I am using this on multiple costume pieces of gold jewelry that have tarnished and began to turn bronze and after I rinsed it off it is just now shiny bronze. What am i doing wrong??
while my LV keychain has been tarnished for over a year and i gaveup on it and been on its pouch for over a year. and now i remember about it so i soaked it on sprite first and proceed with the toothpaste. i didnt expect that it will work like a charm. im so inlove on it again. ill try to work on my favorite tomorrow , see if it will work aswell. TY
I Should have done this right after vacation lastyear, dont know why that area tarnished all my LV´s haha!!!

NEVER keep your jewelry on, either costume or fine, when using any kind of chemicals. Especially strong chemicals like that contained in Nair! You've already seen the results of that. But that also includes household and laundry cleaners, particularly anything containing chlorine bleach, which will absolutely ruin gold. It will eat it up, like acid.
My grandfather was a bench jeweler when I was born in 1957, and until he passed away when I was in my 40's. I learned a considerable amount from him over those years - he started teaching me for real when I turned 9. That's a lot of years of great information!
Shari D57, Hello Shari, I was wondering with all of that awesome information 👍
u were handed down...
Have u thought ab passing it down? Perhaps your own podcast like this one. Pls let me know if u do. Ty.
Have a blessed day. 💝
@@sandraoaks7887 - Thank you very much. It's a lot of information. I'm actually not what you might consider a good candidate for doing podcasts, but I have passed it down on these kinds of posts on RUclips wherever it seems to fit in appropriately, or whenever anyone asks questions where I feel the answer might be helpful. It's easier to do it "in small doses - or even almost large" wherever it seems to fit in best.
It worked! Thank you!
Does it really work on Golden costume jewelry.. Mine turned rose gold.. 😢
Plzz tell me does this wrk 4 'Silver' artificial jewellery....??? 😰😰😰

Woah, hey army
Very nice video!
I just use baking soda and dish soap. The toothpaste works because it has baking soda in it, right?
Can anyone tell me if this also gets rid of a bad dusty/musty/old smell ? I found a necklace to wear for an event but the smell is attrocious. Im gonna give this a try though
Have I ever been this happy? No :D :) :D
Thank you for sharing your idea about how to clean jewelry!! :)
Thank you so much for the amazing video! I was gonna throw my rings and necklaces away because they looked disgusting, I did the exact same thing and it worked great. Please upload more videos. 😊
I know you can use toothpaste for real gold. But can you really use it on fashion jewelry? Even if it's just a little with a soft brush? I know toothpaste has a grit to it so they say dont use anything with gritty material cleaners. Please help me. Thanks
Thanks!
Thank You soo muchhhhh.. 😋
If I have some cheap material jewellry is even works, a color like copper is made on it and the silver color is erased ?
Dam who knew - thank you so much

Yo bro I give you a good thanks 👍👍
And could it take rust smell out of any regular old fake jewelry ?
Does this work because I'm trying to find a way to clean my only birthday gift
Absolutely brilliant video. I managed to clean a copper charm bracelet, and it worked! It came out beautifully, thanks to your amazing tip, cleaning it with toothpaste. I've tried vinegar and ketchup, and this is the best product by far!
i've read that you should never use ketchup on your jewerly because it is acidic.
I can’t believe how well this worked, thank you!!!
i think that for gold or silver or even copper works, if you know what kind of metal is your jewelry made of, then look for all the alternatives to clean it.. i have some silver so i use baking soda and warm water, but for others i will try anything
Ketchup works great for silver by the way 🙂.
Thank you much
I will do this and its worked
It magically worked .. thanks
