Such an underrated song. I'm Brazilian, he's my favorite artist, and that song reminds me of a low-key samba beat. One of my absolute favorites.

One of my favorite Billy Joel songs. Always on the jukebox in college on Long Island in the 80s. I don't think he realizes how popular it was. Billy HAS played it live on the Stranger tour (he forgets). Saw him play it at Nassau Coliseum. Play it again, Billy!

It’s such a shame he couldn’t elaborate on the history of this song because it was the song that got me back into Billy Joel after many years. I woke up one morning and it was playing in my head but couldn’t remember who it was! I felt like an idiot when I had to look it up! This was back about 5 months ago and I’m totally hooked again.

Bill, without that song, the stranger album cannnot be a complete one. I also like everybody has a dream. I don't know why the last song you put in each album sounds so great. Every time I hear famous last words, it makes me feel like buying the next album, which you should release at once. How long are you gonna keep us waiting?

    Liberty "makes" that song!

I hate to say it, but I think Liberty really drove the song forward with that Latin Samba beat - of course, Phil Ramone, too, putting it all together for the "Home Run" production (😛)! While the demo is almost as good, those final elements really knock it out of the park. And while I'm sure "Only the Good Die Young" wasn't *really* going to be put on the album in reggae format, I do think it would've been a little slower and folksier if Liberty hadn't opted to just push it "full drive ahead" into pure, upbeat rock 'n' roll!! 😊
It would be nice if Billy and Liberty could resolve their differences and play together again... 😕

I'm shocked Billy doesn't remember doing the song live, apparently it was an encore up until the 80s.

Reminds me a lot of Stevie Wonder, especially the flute riff.

LOL Billy Joel is often hysterical. But this video is good evidence that sometimes the writer is not the best person to offer perspective on a song. Sometimes the songs you aren't laboring over are those that have the most authentic slices of something, where you get out of the song's way. The song is great, its fun, musically interesting, the lyrics are part wisdom, part tragedy and part laugh-out-loud funny depending on how you listen to them. Is the song imparting life wisdom? Is it sarcasm? Is it venting frustration? Yes to all of those and more, no doubt. A lotta guys don't get second chances, except for maybe a few guys who look a certain way. You have low self esteem from being rejected a lot but yet have to muster infinite courage to face the impossible and hit a bullseye on the first chance and judge yourself harshly for any hesitations or missteps, that's the dating scene for most guys.

Not hard to realize what a great album of strong songs The Stranger had, when a song like “Get It Right” is generally considered the weakest in the collection. Billy confirms that here.

    Huh? It's a samba, dammit!

There were loads of Disco tunes around at that time using Latin rhythms such as the Samba. It was a significant genre of Disco. Salsoul was just one label pumping it out in the mid 70s.
