It’s amazing how many great tunes have come from dreams that were forgotten and then are mysteriously recalled when doing boring stuff like listening to business meetings, having a shower, brushing your teeth or taking a crap
"Ripped off" is a bit of a reach. It is merely a singing approach, method, process or style and the ethereal voices style hardly originated with 10cc, so you might as well accuse them of ripping off ambient, chamber, choral or classical singing.
Thank you Rob. Just the way you are. It is the best song, it cannot be compared with others. It's very special. Pretty. Musically it is beautiful. And the composition is a tender, sublime poem.
I think that Billy just says that for dramatic effect. Although overall he is quite a prolific writer, Billy does not tend to from album to album have many songs at any given time that he has several to choose from so that he can afford to narrow it down to the ones that actually make the album, so usually what you get is what he has. For example, 10-12 tracks tend to be what you often find on an album and from his 12 studio albums, on his fourth Turnstiles there were only eight that had a running time of around only 35 minutes, his fifth The Stranger has nine, his sixth 52nd Street has nine, his eight The Nylon Curtain had nine and his tenth The Bridge also had nine. He also writes the music first and then adds lyrics but had an instrumental on his debut album Cold Sping Harbor and two on his third, Streetlife Serenade. Phil Ramone, Billy's producer has also said that he does not remember Just the Way You Are potentially not making the album too, due to not having that much material then available at the time.
I wish more artists would break down their songs and talk about how they wrote them I mean I've been so now I had no idea that those backing vocals were all his & if you listen to the song a certain way it does kind of give off a Vibe where like it's sort of like the cousin to Stevie Wonder's you are the sunshine of my life
What Billy says at 2:23....Even back THEN when I heard that record I thought of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love". I was like "Listen to the background vocals! It sounds like 10cc!" Billy and producer Phil Ramone did it pretty much the same way they did. Tape loops of vocals and working the faders at the console.
hah, funny...just saw this on youtube and tried to search some video about "just the way you are", cause those 2 songs are very much from the same mother and father production wise and feature the fender rhodes prominently! ruclips.net/video/3oxe4mlsQos/видео.html
One of the best ballads ever created!
One of the best songs in the world.🌈

Thsnk God they kept it on the album! Its easily one of my favorites of Billy Joel's
And that, folks, is how art is created. I always wondered if you ripped off 10cc with the multilayered voices. LOVE that version!
I did too. It's awesome that he admitted to it in such a casual, east coasty manner.
Yep. But it's a good rip off. Totally worked.
@@smokeyovertheline6394 agree, totally. 😎
TRUE!

I loved this. Thanks for posting.

Great.
Hard to believe he almost didn't put this song on the record. One of the great romantic tunes of all time, in our opinion. Fate intervened.

Wow how beautiful that it spawned in a dream 🥹
One of the best ever pieces of music…….
What a cool dude!
I'm in my 60's. Learned only the other day that Phil Woods did the sax solo. Two words: Floresta Canto.

Thanks for posting.....Do you know when this video was recorded?
The best song in history - also the track that Paul McCartney said he wishes he'd of written.

Now there's a grammy story!
2:30
Great, but said nothing about the meaning of the song. Favorite tune but still wondering...
Lol, I always thought this song was a mix of BJ and Stevie Wonder, to hear him say it at the end proved my suspicions.

I wonder how he felt about Barry's version
What is with musicians dreaming of the songs 😂😂
So sick of the I dreamt it crap...
