My husband makes savory oatmeal all the time (to stay away from sugar). But he had a brilliant idea to cook oats in chicken stock. Try it, it's awsome! He adds pinch of pepper, sautéed onions and pieces of precooked sausage to his. He also makes his oatmeal in microwave which is a bit quicker.
I also cook my oats with chicken stock like your husband did, try to add the stock with ginger and garlic. Serve with boiled chicken and drizzle it with sesame oil and leeks.
I use stock for polenta actually. It's pretty good. One of these days, I wanna try out using miso paste for the broth. Make like a spicy sriracha, miso broth.
As im Malaysian, always eat some side dishes with rice, i just replace the rice with oat and if the side dishes are gravy, i just pour the oat and cook/heat up the side dish together with oat. My favourite oat meal is with "asam pedas" Malay's side dish. So spicy and nice aroma
I tried using milk and chicken stock and it worked fine! While it was simmering I added miso and a few other things... sauteed some onions with a fried egg on top! Added green onions and sesame oil. It was so good! Thanks for the recipe!!
Living in Peru, I use 1/4 cup Chicha Morada and 3/4 cup water; add pinch of salt, few drops of Angostura (the Bitters from Trinidad), heaping Tbsp. Coconut Oil, Tbsp. Butter, 1/4 Papaya and add Cinnamon and Vanilla.
As a mother who breastfeeds, I eat oatmeal a lot to with my milk supply and these new recipes are a Godsend! I was getting so tired of the same ole thing. Thank you so much.

Great recipes! Thanks for the pickled pepper and miso suggestions. Definitely will try them.😊 I cannot swallow any sweet when I am hungry, so I always cook my oats in water in the microwave with salt, pepper and turmeric. Topped with spring onion, garlic, fried mushrooms, any type of egg with or without avo, cheese, smoked chicken breast.
I've always wanted to try change my food to a healthier way by eating oatmeal. But I'm no sweet tooth. And I feel weird eating meal that is sweet. This video just blown me! Imma gonna try it asap! Thank you
I am taking meat our my diet for 3 weeks. So I am eating oatmeal and eggs mostly and spinach and kale. I love oatmeal. I made 4 batches of different kinds just now.
I had my doubts too but I literally just finished my first savory oats and I licked the plate clean 😋 with sauteed onions and mushrooms and a bunch of spices
I do this instead of eating bread in the morning My favorite way to eat this is with "schug" Israeli hit sauce. I make it at home its super healthy Coriander Hot Green peppers Garlic Cumin Paprika Salt Pepper Pinch of Tumeric. I drizzle this on the oats and add a Sunnyside up egg on top. Delicious
I start with 3/4 cup of Organic oats, 1 cup of water, a dash of Himalayan salt, one scoop of ground flax seed then microwave on high for 2 minutes. Remove, add 2 Tbsp of peanut butter, stir it in, back to microwave for 40 seconds. The oats have the same consistency as the stove top boiling. But, not finished yet - I add a scoop of pure whey chocolate/peanut butter protein powder and stir that in. Top with Blueberries. I do intermittent fasting and this is my break-fast at noon time. Really filling and really nutritious. I've lost 6 lbs in the last 3 weeks by eating oatmeal at noon each day. Curious to see my cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Good health to all!
I was never a fan of oatmeal, but I just tried the miso one with raw carrots and cucumber, it’s amazing!!! Thank you for introducing me to this new world!!!🤤🤤🤤
I LOVE savory oatmeal. I never liked sweet oatmeal. My 2 favorite are: oats with country gravy and sausage and for a little hint of sweetness - add cranberries. My other favorite is chicken stew and oats similar to chicken congee.
I don't eat oatmeal much, but when l do it's with milk and sugar and 'butter in the eye'(small pat of butter In center top). I've also mixed real well a raw egg in hot oatmeal(it kinda cooks) and fruit cocktail. Tastes better than it sounds. These oatmeal dishes look good, l might try them sometime.
I love this savory oatmeal idea. My family is Russian and we often make different kinds of porridges with savory additives (onions, peppers, mushrooms, etc) Glad to see you trying this
I always have 1.5 tbsp of quick oats with 0.4 cup of milk which i microwave for 2 min or 1.5 min and at the end i put 12 blueberries and 2 sliced strawberry.( Sometimes i microwave oats and milk with egg mixed, that's for protein)
For a savour recipe I use soup stock to cook the oats and it’s like a congee consistency and delicious - goes better with eggs and veggies instead of being cooked in milk (in my opinion). I like the ideas you have presented.
Some great healthy ideas for usually dull oats( I usually eat it only with milk and not cooked)...and it is not even expensive to cook with your ingredients. Thank you from Berlin, Germany :)
I've never thought of savoury oats before. I've tried porridge oats with salt but hated it. These look delicious, although I'll have to vegetarianise them. The boiling water tip sounds great. I've always found porridge oats solidify into a block. I'll give this a whirl. I'm thinking veggie meatballs with a spicy tomato sauce, and fried mushrooms with grilled tomatoes and tofu scramble as variations.
Well i used to hate oatmeal, i hate the taste especially with the fruit recipe oh god i cant stand it, but when i cooked oatmeal with spices voila, soo yummy 🤘🤘 sorry bad english ✌️🙂
Btw oats aren’t necessarily gluten free because most oat fields also contain wheat so if you are allergic to wheat or have celiac disease I would recommend finding a brand of oats that specifically says that they’re gluten free
Oh my GOSH this is PERFECT. I've been so intrigued by the notion of savory oatmeal, but I haven't been able to wrap my mind around it! I always get so disheartened because a lot of healthier snacks and breakfast foods that are hearty tend to be sweeter, especially if they have oats. I just don't have a sweet tooth, I have a savory tooth instead. Thank you so much for this video!
I love making my oats savory! i make one using everything bagel spice, with sesame seeds, black pepper, onion and garlic powder. I also make an italian seasoned one with parm cheese, onion and garlic powder with lots of dried italian herbs (rosemary, basil, oregano and dill) How do you caramelize onions? that one looks amazing!
Lisa Spirito *Caramelized onions - Heat medium sized skillet on med high. Add olive oil or butter to pan and once heated add sliced onions. Add salt. Stir occasionally for 10-15 minutes till onions are golden brown. If you have brown bits in the skillet you can add a little bit of water to skillet to get the brown bits up. This adds to the flavor of the onions. Hope this helps.
I eat groats - whole-grain oats - with my homemade ham and beans - mostly beans, with onion, carrot, and kale and it's delicious. I freeze small portions of the ham and beans in plastic bags; boil my groats, microwave my h and b and eat them with sauteed (in EVOO) kale. Yum. The groats are interchangeable with rice so I'd like to try making Spanish groats (as opposed to Spanish rice) and eat them with beans. I'd also like to try them in Stuffed Peppers. I love them savory. Much better than sweet. Thanks for your suggestions. I plan to definitely try the one with miso.
I made the green eggs and ham this morning, but used steel cut oats instead of regular. It was soo good! Great suggestion Dzung! I love all your videos. You’re one of my favorite RUclipsrs ❤️
Am breastfeeding and oatmeal is what a real need now I always cook it in the microwave bz it is quick and add milk but now I want to drop dairy and sugar from my diet so this will be good idea 👍🏻thanks
I make my coach’s oats and top with cooked spinach, avocado, sprinkle of cheddar cheese, hard boiled egg and sprinkle with Bragg’s aminos which is a lower sodium that low sodium soy sauce and is really delicious. My granddaughter who is a year and half loves this savory oatmeal!
Husband and I eat oatmeal 4-5 mornings/week. Two of our favorites are spanakopita inspired (chopped spinach, feta, and garlic), and pizza (chopped tomatoes, spinach, pesto, and mozzarella). I really want to try your miso one now.
Wow, great recipes. Thanks for those. I have been in love with oatmeals for months now. Since I stopped eating rice, I learned to love oatmeals. Gotta try some of those.
Thank you so much for those creative combinations. Interesting. Will give a try later😍. I normally cooked oak with water, fresh cut corn. Besides, cook oak with water, milk & put a egg and turn off the heat.
Being low on groceries (and cash!), I tried something new yesterday - oatmeal with shredded cheese and a Tablespoon of prepared bacon bits. That was really good. I've done that with grits before. I'll have to add an egg to the mix! Thank you for this video!
Oh my gosh. This video and all the comments have completely changed my mornings. Absolutely delicious, keeps me full, and doesn't make me sleepy right after like a bowl of cereal would.
What I really like is oats with champions. While you are cooking the oats (1 cup of water (lightly salted) plus 1,2 c oats) you gently fry the mushrooms. Add them and a hand full of shreeded cheese (i for personal use gouda or mozzarella) and a splash of milk or cream to the oats, then season it (sea salt and a seasoning callrd „gewürzmischung 1 by Maggi) (I am from Germany) and enjoy (:
I love your recipes, and can’t wait to try them all! I make mine after a recipe I found online which just called for cheese, an egg, and scallions. We have a homemade Cajun seasoning that I add to the egg while it’s frying.
I’m going to try cooking my oats in some mushroom stock and milk them add onions and a soft boiled egg with a few leaves of spinach. Thanks for the inspiration.
You can always make the oatmeal creamy without having to use milk. Just heat up the water so it’s nice and hot (almost to boiling), and add the water to the oats in a small saucepan. Cover, and let that sit for 15 minutes, then uncover after the 15 minutes are up, turn on the heat, and cook for just a few minutes! It makes the cooking time shorter, and they are creamy!!!!
For the Asian version, for those who can't stand garlic smell while working, replace it with a tsp of gochujang sauce. It adds more favor, a little spicy and AWESOMENESS!
English breakfast oats! Mushrooms (~100g), fried eggs (2), bacon, black pudding, sausage and grilled tomatoes. I top with some brown sauce to finish it off. I skip the baked beans because I don't think it adds too much when there's already plenty of flavours and fillingness going on
I have been making savory oatmeal for years! My favorite is with avocado cut in cubes, crumbled feta cheese, cherry tomatoes cut in half, a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of chilli flakes!
I like to add grits to my oatmeal. 2 parts oats to 1 part instant grits. For savory add onions, a little garlic powder, salt and pepper, bits of sausage and a 1/4 cup of cheese. Combine all in a large bowl with water. Microwave at 80% for 4 mins. The grits give a much smother texture to it.
I wasnt that impressed when i started the video but I am definitely going to try them!!!!! And i will check out your other videos. And thank you thank you thank you soooooo much for the tip with rehydrating the oatmeal!!! This will save me so much time:)))
OMG - talk about eye opening idea. I've eaten oats as plain as they go and add sweet toppings but never had I thought of going the savory way. I'm so glad I watched this! Thank you!! 2020 here we come!
My doctor has me on BRAT diet for a bit due to medical issues. I can't have a lot of the food I like but I can have oats and this provides me with an easy recipe to keep the oats not so boring I can't have a lot of proteins ham being one of them so I can substitute it with something else but the vegan option is great just can't have the salsa. Again this diet really restricts me but it's only short term. Thank you for providing me with some recipes to try to keep my food options interesting.
I am salivating...and breakfast is still 10 hours away! Great recipes! Question - can you suggest a substitute/alternative to the miso? I don't have miso !
I would love if you could explore a way to just use egg yolks in breakfast. My son is allergic to egg whites and i always have a hard tim including him in scrambled eggs. I would love to try this with the yolk somehow. Your awesome!
I am looking to change the food in my life to healthier choices and I want to incorporate oats. I love all of your different ideas. Thanks for being creative. ☺️
I love the idea of savory oats being advertised. I've done it for myself and haven't really seen many people even suggest it. I've even gotten weird looks for putting an egg and some salsa on my oats. Thank you for these ideas! I'm not sure why it never occurred to me to throw some beans in!
Hi! My favorite savory oatmeal is your recipe with mushroom, spinach & soy sauce - delicious! Actually, I’ve been trying to locate that video for a long time and can’t seem to find it. Can you please comment with the link or at least the title for me? Thank you❤️
You can add a cube slices of carrots, corn, parsley, chicken breast, salty egg, scallion and a drizzle of a sesame oil or sesame seeds 😋😋😋 Asian oatmeal porridge 😆
My sister sent this to me and seriously I love how these are actually savory (was literally just discussing how most oats recipes are too sweet for the morning!) and I just really appreciate how simple you keep these recipes and the ingredients, just a few things needed, or things that can be quickly prepped, like leftover onions from the dinner before! I never could understand how people always have time to whip up these snazzy diet or Pinterest recipes. Like, it looks good, but I don’t have a professional chef on staff at home who is dedicated to healthy eating 😂 so honestly, from the bottom of my heart 💜 I I appreciate that your recipes are tasty AND real, for the average person on-the-go
I have my salty version with ham, cheese (preferably the smelly kind: camembert, brie, etc ), belpepper or mushroos and pul biber/cayenne. I will try all from this video. Usually my oatmeal breakfast is an alternative of egg breakfast:)
Wow, these look so delicious! I really want to try the green eggs and ham one. I like the tips for using a butter knife to slice avocado and to rehydrate leftover oatmeal with boiling water. Very helpful 😊
Thank you Honeysuckle for your "Savory Oatmeal" video! I'm an avid runner, & very active in my everyday life, so whole grains have always been a mainstay in my diet. Although I can't say that I'd like a runny egg in anything that I'd eat, it's very nice to see your version of an unsweetened, whole grain meal option that can be enjoyed anytime!
Cook oatmeal like normal add braggs organic sprinkle to taste. And when its almost done cooking add mushrooms till they soften . simple easy and really god and no sodium.
awesome ideas! Not much of a sweets person so I for breakfast I am defnitely more of an eggs and bacon person. I love congee and grits bowls so these are great ideas for making it healthier

Woww😊😊 your husband is so considerate to cook for you. Couple goal❤
@@katelynwtl4289 To be honest, he makes this oatmeal for himself, but I think it's still great, less work for me))
I also cook my oats with chicken stock like your husband did, try to add the stock with ginger and garlic. Serve with boiled chicken and drizzle it with sesame oil and leeks.
Wow that sounds fantastic
OksanaE this is such an awesome trick, gonna try this with veggie stock today!
When I make my oats rather than putting water I put stock so it has a more savory taste and sometimes put a dash of low sodium soy sauce 😍
I'll try your way next time!!!
Vegeta stock powder works for me.
Genious! I'll try it next time. Thank you 💜
You just blew my mind girl!!!!!

It’s wrong because nobody has thought about savory oats...
My go to breakfast : oats, scrambled eggs with tomato and spinach, and 1/2 sliced avocado with soy sauce :)
I tried using milk and chicken stock and it worked fine! While it was simmering I added miso and a few other things... sauteed some onions with a fried egg on top! Added green onions and sesame oil. It was so good! Thanks for the recipe!!
Just made the miso one for breakfast this morning and it was AMAZING! I wilted the greens in the tiniest amount of toasted sesame oil. So. Good.
Ahhhhhh that sesame oil sounds amazing! Rounds it out nicely
Your last name is epic
This is so helpful, this is going to be my supper ever since I have a problem of bloating stomach, and it will help to stay away from sugar.
I have never thought of having savory oatmeal. This is genius lol
I’m so glad you liked it!! The miso egg one is my recommendation!!
Same! I’m a little skeptical but this video makes it look delish. Have to try. I’m a month late. Have you tried savory oats yet?

French onion oatmeal sounds divine!!! Broth is a great idea!

A favorite savory oatmeal for my kiddos is cut up breakfast sausage, a fried egg and a light drizzle of good maple syrup on top. 🤤😋
Just curious, do you add flavor to your oats? Salt, sugar or anything?
I leave it plain but you can add a dash of salt if you’d like!! Leaving it plain gives me more flexibility 😊😊
I am salivating...and breakfast is still 10 hours away! Great recipes!
Question - can you suggest a substitute/alternative to the miso? I don't have miso !
I discovered spinach, flax meal and Tahini! Top it with a bit of salt and it's golden!
Thank you very much for the tips! Really awesome ideas. Wishing much success.
I would love if you could explore a way to just use egg yolks in breakfast. My son is allergic to egg whites and i always have a hard tim including him in scrambled eggs. I would love to try this with the yolk somehow. Your awesome!
You can also add vegan "meat" to these as well 💕💕💕 great ideas
These look scrumptious! Thank you for these winter breakfast recipes!
Girl!!!! This is brilliant; I get tired eating oatmeal the traditional way. Thank you
I am looking to change the food in my life to healthier choices and I want to incorporate oats.
I love savory oats! I like to put riced cauliflower in with the oats too.
That's a great idea! Never thought of it.👍🏼
Ahhh I love sneaking veggies in!! Genius
I’ll try one of these.... Maybe the last one but with a different flavored sausage... Looks like it’s a nice meal even for lunch🥣🧚🏾🧚🏾🧚🏾
Hi! My favorite savory oatmeal is your recipe with mushroom, spinach & soy sauce - delicious! Actually, I’ve been trying to locate that video for a long time and can’t seem to find it. Can you please comment with the link or at least the title for me?
Thank you❤️
When I'm too lazy to make any food, I just cook together canned fish and quick oats, then I add sunny side up or soft boiled egg.
You can add a cube slices of carrots, corn, parsley, chicken breast, salty egg, scallion and a drizzle of a sesame oil or sesame seeds 😋😋😋 Asian oatmeal porridge 😆
not healthy, but corned beef hash and oats are a delicious combination.
try the oat meal arroz caldo, its like congee, its good this coming winter season and if you're feeling sick this is good!
Like, it looks good, but I don’t have a professional chef on staff at home who is dedicated to healthy eating 😂 so honestly, from the bottom of my heart 💜 I I appreciate that your recipes are tasty AND real, for the average person on-the-go
Yes! Cholula is the very best!
I've never tried to make savory oatmeal before... These look delicious!
I never thought to cook savory oatmeal.... but i'm loving it
I love making skirlie or my own spin off of it, you mix with potatoes and meat as well with the oats and caramelized onion very good. Very breakfast
Thank You ! Greetings from Gouda, The Netherlands. I cook oats in water then it goes to the microwave.
awesome ideas! Not much of a sweets person so I for breakfast I am defnitely more of an eggs and bacon person. I love congee and grits bowls so these are great ideas for making it healthier
I tried the breakfast version and there were ZERO leftovers! Oh, sooo tasty, I'm so happy to try this again!
my uncle made us an oatmeal cream of mushroom soup for dinner once and it was very good!
