Why You Can't Invade Solo Hosts in Elden Ring

  • This week I wanted to address the absence of solo host invasions in Elden Ring. I'm all for more invasions but this is an area where I feel this game was just built different, though not necessarily for the better.
If you like my work and want to support me further, I won't stop you from giving me money.

Being a solo-host of an invasion is the only multyplayer aspect I am actually interested in, but sadly the taunters tounge is so cumbersome, that I do it rarely, and very quickly stop it again. It could add some friction and tension into legacy-dungeon exploration, which I agree is missing to the games detriment.

I've had a very similar experience. I enjoy invading in the other games but basically in elden ring. I've never wanted to. The idea of taking a consistent 2v1 is rough. I'd always aim to fight someone as fairly as possible but in elden ring I basically just leave until I get a 1v1 as I'd rather not be the minor inconvenience of an invader to 2 friends just trying to play the game. As the one being invaded? I'm meh. I don't mind the occasional invader but my friends hate them so it's a weird dynamic this game has fostered.

Wow crazy timing, I actually started a TT run today and was so disappointed at how I wasn’t even invaded at all. I played for around 40 min and nothing. I know low level is active since I was getting constant invasions as an invader. So disappointing.

    • @BlaZay
      @BlaZay Месяц назад +2

I have about 8 TT full playthroughs under my belt pre-DLC, currently doing one in the DLC. I can testify that pretty much all level brackets used to be much more active, now most people are around lvl 200. However, you have to keep in mind that the DLC came out a little over a month ago, there are still plenty of people playing through it for the 1st time, not to mention New Toy Syndrome encouraging players to invade with DLC stuff. Give it a bit of time, and I'm sure invaders will start spreading out over different level brackets again once the dust starts to settle.

    • @iota-09
      @iota-09 Месяц назад

@@BlaZay i honestly don't think it's about the level, i tried all level brackets while knowing that there weere invaders at all level brackets, I tried even sniping solo hosts with taunter's tongue(friends) and it didn't work.
i can say with high likelihood that the issue is that there's too many people playing in co-op right now... which isn't actually a bad thing till you realize how badly skewed the system is towards leading invaders to invade only them.
essentially what i'm thinking is happening code-wise is that that game checks if there's any co-op sssions open at the moment to invade, IF THERE ISN'T then it will send invaders to the solo TT hosts, meaning that if there's always at least one co-op group in the invadable worlds, invaders will always invade the co-operators and never the TT solos, which would explain how come at all level ranges i tested in the last year* there will always be low activity when solo no matter what.
on dlc release day btw it was even worse, i got effectively 0 invasions after 4 hours of tongue active.
*i do recall things being differet in the first omnths of the game, where you would get invaded constantly, again, regardless of level range.
the one test i want to do but hadn'had the chance to try is trying to snipe invade a solo tt host, fail for 30+ minutes, than have the host summon someone and seee how long it'd take me to invade them, while that wouldn't be definite proof, it might at least clear up if my doubts are reasonable.
(given that using TT in co-op led to extremely better results though at the same levels as my ttruns, i'd say i'm fairly confident of my theory)

Rune arcs should have been more common and dropped by every single boss encounter.
Activating the effect of a rune arc should allow the host to be invaded by 1 if solo or 2 if with coop.

This probably isn't the right video to comment this under, but I've always thought that the rune arcs should be more frequent for hosts, and that invaders who "kill" their hosts instead simply take the rune arc, leave the host where they are, and then disconnect / absorb any summons with their rune arc. it would leave the host defenseless but not stop their progress. Then just ensure that hosts can't use rune arcs away from graces.

99/100 times a new player would get pooped on by "twinked" out pvp builds whose players have near olympic level competence, even 3v1 can really start to favor the invader once they get good enough, see chase or steelvosky. In dark souls 1 or demon souls it was a bunch of "specially abled" silly billies foolin around with foam paddles but these days there's such a gap in preparation and skill that I think it undermines that narrative your referring to in the beginning, the host has no chance unless the invader throws.

Not every invader wants to just dunk on newbies or underprepared players going through the game for the first time. But I get your point. I play co-op, at least I am right now with friends. And man, we all hate invasions in this game.
We’ve played all the soulsborne games together and invasions have been anywhere from aggravating (Dark Souls 1 twinks) to actually kinda fun (Dark Souls 3 in the right circumstances).
We are playing through the game together and then going into the DLC, we get invaded constantly, and every damn invader seems to have the same traits: they all use late-game weapons, armor, talismans, and fully-upgraded healing flasks. So they have a ton of healing, each of their heals heal them to full, more powerful Physick tears, late game weapons and/or ashes of war, etc etc.
They also all play really scummy, get off 1 hit, use rot in the early game when normal players can’t cure it, always run into enemies (even though we always try to signal the invader that we wish to duel 1-1 sequentially, with one of the phantoms going forwards and bowing while the rest of us sit down).
Due to the change in stagger lengths, aka no Combos besides edge cases, and how slow weapons can feel compared to how lighting-fast and easy roll spam is, the invader just never seems to get hit, and when they do their Veteran’s Set makes them take basically nothing. It makes these invasions take a long time, and even if we win we all just go “Finally, it’s over”.
We’ve recently realized that when an invasion ends successfully, that host is immune to invasions for 20 minutes. We often wait to see the invader, and if they’re scummy just jump off of a nearby cliff. You basically lose nothing if you die except a rune arc, anyway, so all getting killed by an invader really does is waste your time.
Feel free to insult or judge me all you want, I don’t care. Just thought I’d share an opinion forme someone who loves Soulsborne games but only occasionally enjoys PvP. This game ain’t it for PvP.

Went through the DLC into the abyssal woods and got invaded by someone only using madness as the theme of which there build was. They weren't cheese. The invaders that use overturned garbage that then complain cause it's not fair. And the hosts and hunters that have to use meta weapons in a 1v3. PvP in ER is so bad that it actually pulls the entire game/ experience down a few pegs.
They should have simply made the entire game offline. Setting limitations for coop in an open world game without horse travel, forcing invaders to face ganks by ruling out organic solo invasions, is FSW once again trying to play both sides.
The same way they “refuse to put an easy mode” in the game, they allow players to password up , use ash summons or one of the various OP meta weapons to bypass the entire game they worked so hard to make challenging. See? Both sides. They’re hypocrites.
Miyazaki and FSW was really in their prime with ds1….and of course Sekiro. I’ll even say ds2 had more of an identity because the coop was way more obscure and you had to work a little if you wanted to skip bosses. Once BB and ds3 introduced passwords, FSW became the biggest hypocrites in the gaming world.
“We want to make a hard game that challenges players but here’s the cheat code durrrrrr” absolutely imbecilic behavior.

I miss solo invasions, I used to love dried finger runs, the taunters tongue just isnt the same. I think they should have made the furl finger remedy or whatever its called be the trigger for opening yourself upto invasions from a single invader, that way its not tied to power, it's still optional but also allows the thrill of being invaded, then taunters tongue should behave exactly like dried finger did, you cant just disable it after getting an invader in.

Allowing a horse works only as long as the host still has intention of progressing the game as game progression most often required you to hop off torrent, so eventually, if thr host doesn't plan to run away forever, it can be fun to have torrent available.
Taunter's tongue on the other hand sucks:
1: it being toggleable off is insanely bad for so many reasons I can't bother listing them all.
2: even if you use taunter's tongue you still will be at the bottom of the list when it vomes to invasion priority, which in theory makes sense, but in practice means you almost never will get invaded unless you summon someone.
3: however, when used when summoning, you get invaded near instantly and guess what? This paired with it being allowed to be turned off is what created modern day gankers.
In short, the current system favors ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY gankers.
And i can attest to that, if you want tobhave a pvp focused run with a friend doing 2v1s and 2v2s, it's great, just run through dungeons while fighting a gauntlet of invaders, it can be insane fun.
...or be a little bitch and wait in a hole with no exit with a gank squad of healerwith heal from afar, nuke mage with 3000 gravitational missiles and comets and the swift slash melee bleed guy.
These are the only two groups that receive any form of benefit from the current multiplayer system compared to any of the previous online iterations.

On the invasion change: They wanted to protect the casual "new to franchise" players and we long term players suffered as a result of this change.
This is my opinion and as always feel free to challenge it, but I believe that FS is starting to become more keen on analytics and observation based methods of development, wherein the devs chase after player retention, sometimes in a way that screws the player in the long run or changes up the formula too much.
One of my favorite franchises had this happen a few years ago, MHW. Imo what happened there, is that Capcom casualized the game to cater to a new/expanding audience, and watered down a lot of its features/gameplay mechanics in order to appease these players. As a result post dlc/patches, combat ended up feeling LESS fluid and more clunky due to complaints from people who didn't play the game for long enough to learn other methods. If you don't know what I'm referring to, it's the clutch claw. They added in this gauntlet which you are forced to use every couple min, or lose 50% if not more of your total damage output which is MASSIVE for MH. You are required to use it just to simply reach your baseline, standard damage output against a monster.
Tangent aside, the reason I brought that up is that this feels like a watering down of several systems like MHW had happen to it. I'm talking about multiplayer player caps, I'm talking about covenants, I'm talking about arenas, and I'm even talking about coop. Since that also got -1 to player cap.
But bear with me, the old system is how FS actually retained players like me, I liked having those far-off multiplayer goals to work towards whether it be a new aura for red/blue, darkmoon blade, or a unique weapon that comes from covenant play.
There is none of that stuff anymore, the intrinsic/extrinsic motivation that you used to get from multiplayer and covenants.
All that's left from that era is moments where you see someone's gear, look it up, and there's no real achievement for getting it, and you're most likely also playthrough-locked from it anyways, if it is a quest item. Which quest items are fine but like not everyone makes their build expecting to have to do it all over unless it's exclusive to NG+/beyond.
For example, No more 50 player kills/boss victories etc. Those boss victories were necessary for the sunbro economy, as well as blue pvp in ds2. and pvp victory at least gave you humanity for your efforts on either side so you also had some online motivation for your own progression.
I am almost certain that this decision with elden ring to stop solo invasion is a financial decision. It seems obvious that a company would choose more money over long-term audience every time no matter the company.

One of your best-written videos yet. Really appreciate your understanding of self-conception the player has, or used to have, in these games.
"Instead of hunting players for something they have, [invaders] exist to counterbalance the benefits of co-operation".
Yes, indeed. As with most of the lore of ER, red lore removes agency from the player. It may seem silly to say, given ER is a power fantasy. But the way the world and lore is conceived, my Tarnished has the least agency or personal drive of any souls protagonist. A disembodied voice told me to take over the world, and I did fetch-quests on the way. There's no great roleplay value. When I did Fia's or Dung Eater's or Goldmask's ending, I felt like I was just ticking boxes, not revelling in a fascinating worldview. The Souls games achieved it so much better. And PVP was an integral part of the worldview in each faction. Here it really is reduced to a mechanic. Maybe they haven't lost their touch, maybe ER was a one-and-done bullshit affair with casuals. I hope so...
I've simply put ER down for good. If I want immersion in a well-written and compelling lore world, I'll just go back to souls. Unfortunately, that is that.

Covenants could’ve been so helpful for co-op and invasions alike. Imagine a covenant focused on gaining power, being in it opens you to invasions from players in the same covenant. PvP focused players would get their invasions and their solo host encounters. Then there could be a sunbro/like covenant that enables co-op without risk of invasion, instead counter balanced with higher scaling enemies or even additional, tougher enemies. Instead of just a group of basic soldiers maybe they’re now accompanied by several knights. Some covenants like these could have addressed the issue people have with the multiplayer.

Not because I'm any good at PVP (I always use the invasion items when I pick some up just for laughs/to keep multiplayer alive, and I invariably get my ass handed to me), but because I like being surprised and it makes the game feel alive. I recently replayed DS2 and there is still a surprising amount of multiplayer activity, especially in the Bell Keepers, although I didn't manage to get red-invaded even with the Delicate String (I didn't have much luck invading hosts using Cracked Red Eye Orbs either, I think I was in a bad soul memory range). But in ER, having to activate the Tongue really kills the vibe. It's more like clicking "search for a match" than it is like being invaded.

I think of all the Fromsoft Souls-games, ER is actually the most about multiplayer and cooperation. That doesn't change the nature of its genre as primarily single player, but it feels disingenuous to say ER specifically is centered around single-player. Because of every one of these From has made, it does the most to empower multiplayer. It may be slightly inconvenient, but you can always have a coop if yoi're willing to leg it from a summoning pool. And most bosses have npc summons to aide players, even moreso in the dlc.

    • @emotionaljonxvx
      @emotionaljonxvx  Месяц назад +1

That's an interesting perspective. The summoning pools are a strong indicator of widespread cooperative availability and, by extension, a support for PVP. I would say NPC summons don't count as multiplayer but the concept of having player-style support is certainly there.
I still think the game is largely tilted away from multiplayer as the smaller player count per session and vast expanse of the overworld makes cooperative play challenging, but it's worth considering how it was in previous games as well.
I think, for me and for a lot of the community, multiplayer comes down to how strong a PVP experience is because that's where the largest facets of multiplayer thrive. Co-op is well and good but without a similarly robust PVP experience, it comes off as lacking. Certainly a matter of perspective but I think that's the bulk of the issue.
      Appreciate the different perspective!

There is still lore and factions that represent invading, though. It also would have been incredibly easy to allow single player invasions by having invaders seek to hunt those using the great runes similar to the ember mechanic. Really, the only reason to get rid of solo invasions is torrent and all the ways either invading on horseback or getting stuck off your horse could go wrong.
Its also important to note that I think invaders have always been how they balance coop, but solo invasions serve an important purpose in helping new blood learn how to invade. I slowly but surely started to get accustomed to 2v1 if not 3v1 in DS3, but I literally can’t touch invasions in elden ring. I barely touched pvp in the souls games until ds3.
When elden ring was announced I was so pumped to try the pvp and make builds and what not. However, I was disspointed in that aspect.
And I'm troubled, cause the way I like pvp is not sporty. I don't like hot swapping weapons, I like to have my character be a specific build. Something thematic, not as much as cosplay but something that was result of the struggles I went through in this world. That is why I was eager to have some covenants, it was perfect for players like me.
But we dont have that, so I can only join pvp in a disconnected way, I rather have to tp to the roundtable to acces the colosseums which are usually sweaty af. Or wait standing somewhere in the world while I use the finger thing. PvP in this game is so optional in all aspects it makes it feel shallow. Its so careless in design that a lot of weapons are not used, maybe 60% of weapons are ignored in this game.
And I've been thinking lately how to make things right with this pvp system and one of the last answers I have come up with is "not caring" about it. Its so discouraging I may simply stop caring and focus my builds on the pve. Cause thinking about the lvl requirements, the advanced move tech, the phantom hits, all those shennanigans the pro pvp players use its too much to me. Specially if there are no rewards, there is no roleplay, no purpose besides winning. Why would a pve player be interested in joining pvp if there is nothing else over there?
Thats why I think a lot of players dont care, are angry at it, and the pvp playerbase may be decreasing at best. It makes me so angry :(

You can't invade solo hosts because of the horse mechanic multi-player disables the horse and fromsoft didn't want people getting constantly dismounted by invaders.
I know there are places where you can't use the horse but my guess is the reason we can't just invade there is because it would have been too costly and way to much work to install two invasion systems.

Elden Ring was my first Fromsoft/Souls like game. I thought it was a single player game. I thought all the Dark Souls were single player games too. I had no idea they had put multiplayer in all their games. I've been playing ER since launch pretty much non stop. Offline only. I've beaten it dozens of times with various builds or challenge runs. In the two and a half years I've been playing I've never had the desire to try co-op or PvP. Now with the expansion giving me all the tools for more builds, I'll probably play for another couple years before I get bored enough to attempt playing online in any way.
I understand Co-op: Have fun with a friend. I understand PvP: Challenge someone to a duel. Invasions just seem like a way for griefers to get their rocks off. Why do you want to impede someone else's progress when it doesn't affect your game? Who cares if a noob needs help with a boss? Why does that make you have to interrupt their game? It's retarded.

I would welcome solo invasions simply for the fact that it would mean I would have room to goof around more like I could in Ds2 rather than having to rush down the host or phantoms with some meta weapon or cheese ash of war. Currently, I usually try to eliminate the phantoms as quick as possible, so I can switch to something unorthodox and have fun with the host. Doing that over and over again is just tedious.
Interestingly enough, I find Elden Ring to be in need of solo-invasions the most for the following reasons:
    - The skill-gap seems to have been drastically narrowed thanks to over-tuned ashes of wars and lock-on tracking in general--having a lower skill gap where the outplay potential is reduced will have a frustration factor that is always exacerbated when dealing with multiple opponents; this is true for any game from Halo to Souls. I really wish Ashes were more or less treated like any other part of a weapon's moveset where they provide some utility other than an exorbitant amount of damage on the virtue of being an skill that has an fp cost. Ashes like flaming strike have no business doing the amount of damage that they do when the frame data, hitboxes, AoE, and hitstun they provide give more than ample reason to use them over the weapon's basic moveset, and flaming strike is far from one of the worst offenders. Most if not all ashes of wars need to be given the hoarfrost stomp treatment; the only reason players stopped using that one post-nerf is because all the other ashes are just too powerful for no reason.
    - PvE is not a threat; it is hardly considered to even be an obstacle. One of the core justifications for the invader disadvantages traditionally in Souls games was that they the entirety of the environment and mobs to use at their disposal--that justification goes straight into the gutter for Elden Ring. The map design is hardly treacherous--with a few exceptions. The mobs just generally seem like they don't care to attack. A lot of times players can just run past them, and even if they do get noticed, the second they get outside the mob's personal space, the mobs just drop all aggro. Compare that with Ds2 where mobs will chase the player down to the depths of hell. This is especially true in the overworld, where enemies are so sparse, if an invader wants to make use of them, they have to go on a marathon. Even then, at higher levels, players will have access to weapons and spells that will delete legions of mobs with a single press of a button. Bigger mobs such as giants or dragons also tend to attack invaders. . . Lmao
    - Password summons provide too many advantages to the host to justify a single invader. From the innate advantage of coordination that comes with cooperating with those you know to over-leveled phantoms decimating everything. . . invaders are hardly a threat. Though perhaps this and everything else is less justification for solo invasions and more for co-invasions.
    ---
Would solo invasions fix Elden Ring PvP? Probably not, but it would break up the monotony of every invasion feeling like gank at pontiff simulator. So far, the current Seamless update is the closest to what invasions and multiplayer should have always been: I know it has 1:1 invader to co-op slots, and I think that includes the host, so solo invasions are possible. Levels of cooperators are taken into account when matchmaking. Everyone has access to the same tools more-or-less--that includes rune arcs, spirit summons, and torrent. The only thing it needs are a some bug fixes and co-invasions (where players can invade the same world with a friend or two), and it will probably be perfect.
To anyone on PC, I would highly recommend trying out invasions in Seamless. You can easily make a copy of your vanilla save, change the extension to convert it, and just start invading. If you are anything like me, once you start invading in Seamless, you might find it difficult to go back to vanilla.

Ds2 was an interesting system and probably the most fun alongside ds1's wacky covenants, meanwhile Bloodborne eas the one that left the most agency to hosts while keeping the power balance shifted more towards Invaders while unfortunately having the worst matchmaking of any game i ever played (lol can't even find people you used a coop password with who live in the next street over) and elden ring is... Well, you saw the video on the comments.
But what ds3 was is *reliable*, the only thing that didn't work well in that game was the blue sentinel matchmaking, hut everything else was solid, matchmaking worked as expected for any type of online interaction and while with the obvious flaws that come from its rpg elements, the overall balance was solid too when accounting for all the various choices and multiplayer elements added.
      It was solid.
I have no idea why going back on so many of the good ds3 mp choices, some i get, like fear of poor performance in overworld on base ps4(if overworld runs at 30fps while summoning one person in the dlc for me when in arena i get 60fps on pc...) or annoyances with riding horses during invasions...
But others are just absolutely baffling and make 0 sense, and i just don't get it.(See difference in taunter tongue usage compared to previous games and how its matchmaking priorities are wacky af)

7:45 Yeah, but if you went offline to avoid invasions back then, then you'd miss out on player messages that would lead to secrets and other things like that. When I was a newbie in Demon's Souls, I'd just jump off the high point of the nexus to be ghost form again. Didn't want to get invaded and make the world tendency worse. In Dark Souls 1 I did the same because I kept being killed by twinks. I only had a fighting chance in Anor Londo when I at least had some gear.
8:05 Yeah, invasions are disruptive. We didn't start winning at all until Liurnia. We just died to rot pots in Stormveil. After that... Most invaders die in 2-5 minutes. There's some invaders that took 10-30 minutes to kill. Out in the Field like consecrated Snowfields. There are those that'd run forever with bloodhound step. That's why in the DLC I finally ended my elixir syndrome and started using Albanauric Pots and other hard to craft items. Worst case when just 1 of us three die. We'd have to go pick them up again at the nearest grace.
10:30 Yep, we played blind, exploring everything and killing every boss. The co-op run took 300 hours to beat. Since you have to go through each area and beat each boss thrice.
In conclusion, invaders are an annoyance. And I will throw a roped fetid pot at every single one my troupe of three kill.
