I'm an American and I must say that Afrikaners remind me of southern Americans who had ancestors in the Confederacy and wish to have their own country created by separating states from the United States of America. One thing that puzzles me however: according to the 2011 census, Afrikaans is the 3rd most spoken home language (bigger than English), so why do Afrikaners feel so strongly that their culture is under threat? Sad no one has answered you in four years. So lets try. First off, the Afrikaans language is not in itself a culture, it is merely the preferred language of certain cultures, of which there are four. Two white and two bi-racial (coloured) cultures. The bi-racial cultures that use Afrikaans are very distinct from each other, the one is predominately of a Malay/European mix and is almost exclusively Muslim in religion. The other is of European/Khoi (Hottentot) mix and predominately Christian in beliefs. The two white Afrikaner cultures are more homogeneous racially and religiously speaking, being mainly of Dutch, French and German heritage with a touch of Khoi blood tracing back to some of the original Dutch farmers who married Khoi wives and they are mostly Protestant Christians. What separates them is mainly a 200 year old divergent political history than a religious, language or racial reason. The one white Afrikaner group stayed in the Cape Province when it came under British rule, I think around 1790 or 1812, becoming subjects of the British Crown. The other group refused British rule and left the Cape Territories to set up independent Afrikaans speaking countries further north, namely the Transvaal and the Orange Free State Republics. Both of which were independent self governing countries with their own flags and everything. Those Afrikaners that want independence like those at Orania, are mostly descendants of this second Afrikaans cultural group that wanted self determination and that left to find it. They still want it. They don't care if their overlords are white British or black African, all they know is that they are not Afrikaners and that they cannot be their overlords. They want their own land for self rule and self determination. The British took this away from them in 1902 in what is called the Anglo-Boer Wars, and they have wanted it back ever since. People are trying to make it into a whole racial political thing, but the truth is, its the desire of every culture, to live and thrive. Its the reason they left Europe for Africa and the Cape Provence for the Transvaal, the desire to be free and self determining. I suspect most of the second group of white Afrikaners has got more French Huguenot blood flowing in their veins than Dutch blood. If so then their desire for freedom is centuries old, its now at the DNA level. It is just who they are.
Africa has it's own version of inclusion. It's own very complex and difficult responsibilities and cultures. This is a very young tribe very unaware of how Africa truly works as with most European, Asian, Arab or Turkish tribes. Sad no one has answered you in four years. So lets try. First off, the Afrikaans language is not in itself a culture, it is merely the preferred language of certain cultures, of which there are four. Two white and two bi-racial (coloured) cultures.
The bi-racial cultures that use Afrikaans are very distinct from each other, the one is predominately of a Malay/European mix and is almost exclusively Muslim in religion. The other is of European/Khoi (Hottentot) mix and predominately Christian in beliefs.
The two white Afrikaner cultures are more homogeneous racially and religiously speaking, being mainly of Dutch, French and German heritage with a touch of Khoi blood tracing back to some of the original Dutch farmers who married Khoi wives and they are mostly Protestant Christians. What separates them is mainly a 200 year old divergent political history than a religious, language or racial reason.
The one white Afrikaner group stayed in the Cape Province when it came under British rule, I think around 1790 or 1812, becoming subjects of the British Crown. The other group refused British rule and left the Cape Territories to set up independent Afrikaans speaking countries further north, namely the Transvaal and the Orange Free State Republics. Both of which were independent self governing countries with their own flags and everything.
Those Afrikaners that want independence like those at Orania, are mostly descendants of this second Afrikaans cultural group that wanted self determination and that left to find it. They still want it. They don't care if their overlords are white British or black African, all they know is that they are not Afrikaners and that they cannot be their overlords. They want their own land for self rule and self determination. The British took this away from them in 1902 in what is called the Anglo-Boer Wars, and they have wanted it back ever since.
People are trying to make it into a whole racial political thing, but the truth is, its the desire of every culture, to live and thrive. Its the reason they left Europe for Africa and the Cape Provence for the Transvaal, the desire to be free and self determining. I suspect most of the second group of white Afrikaners has got more French Huguenot blood flowing in their veins than Dutch blood. If so then their desire for freedom is centuries old, its now at the DNA level. It is just who they are.

This is a very young tribe very unaware of how Africa truly works as with most European, Asian, Arab or Turkish tribes. Segregation has stopped them from looking any deeper but also masked over what is truly happening. Yes, there are threats but there are also allies working VERY hard behind the scenes. When the tribe is old enough and their loyalties to the land are unquestioned then they will receive a truly african education and their own totem. Nothing will happen before that.
