S1 - Ep 218 - Orania - A Beautiful Small Town on the Banks of the Orange River!

  • When we left Lückhoff, we knew we were heading for the small town of Orania. We found a beautiful gravel road on which to travel. We saw amazing scenes and wildlife on this road. Then we reached the bridge which crossed over the mighty Orange River. We couldn’t help ourselves, we had to stop on the bridge and witness this awe-inspiring view. It is truly a spectacular sight to behold, the green fields of the local farmers are virtually on the banks of this river. Then we entered Orania and the first impression was that of a well-oiled machine. The town was very neat and it was a real pleasure driving through the streets. The residents of this place were so friendly, everyone waved at us as they drove by. We also found quite a few places of interest to visit, like Monument Hill and the Koeksister Monument down by the swimming pool. I was happy to see that the village was expanding, there were many new houses being built. It was great to have visited Orania. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #orania #freestate #northerncape #orangeriver #luckhoff

Rod Franks, that is a kind hearted comment. I am curious however. As a person of colour do you not feel discriminated against knowing that you will not be welcomed in this town. I am white and the thought of turning a good person away merely because of their skin colour feels wrong.

@@donsmith8679 To answer your question, Don, The answer is No. I am a former Detective of 30 years and in my former profession I have learned to understand that we all are different in one shape or another and there is nothing wrong with these folk who, by the way, built their own village from scratch. They want to preserve their identity and from what I see, heard and researched, there is no harm in that... As a detective I drove past the village many years ago with a prisoner in transit. The race of the prisoner, white. 11 kilometers outside the village we had a puncture with our little Nissan Sentra sedan. We had a spare wheel and in typical cop-fashion, drove all that distance without a jack... And who stopped to assist? White Toyota Bakkie with Cattle-rails and two gentlemen, from Orania who also were kind enough to spare an extra bottle of bottled Water, because we gave almost all of our own drinking water to our prisoner who were facing about 24 cases of fraud in Cape Town 😂 and who obviously were nervous and went through our drinking water like a bar-fly in a Tavern. It was this interaction which caused me to view every incident where South Africans of color would criticize fellow, hardworking, god-fearing South Africans with a bit of skepticism... Body language speaks volumes about people. If you as a person of colour go into a settlement like that with a disproving and demeaning attitude, you will get what every person going into anyone's property with attitude would get, crap...

@@donsmith8679 You didn't notice that Orania is but a tiny patch in a very large country that is full of Black people? Do you think the Black people of 99% Black Africa don't have enough Black Space? You didn't notice that White South Africans are being displaced, discriminated against and even murdered on their own farms after being brutally tortured? You begrudge the South African Boers a tiny town that they made all on their own out of nothing, literally there was nothing there (pretty much like the history of South Africa, which was NOBODY WAS THERE until the Europeans started building infrastructure there)? Do you begrudge Sioux Indians their reservation lands in America? I bet you don't. White South Africans are a minority group that needs protection. The Boers created their own community so they could live and be safe and their children could be safe, and have every right to decide who comes in there and who doesn't.

    Aussie here;
Thank you so much for showing South Africa to us. I really love seeing this beautiful country through your eyes and it generally takes me 2 hours to watch every hour of content because I am following your adventures on Google Earth.
I know a bit about SA history, having both an interest in the country and South African friends that now live in Australia. To me Orania is so important. It's not just a town but a new beginning for the Afrikaner people. To me Orania is a place where native Afrikaners can once again be a majority in their own land and have their own schools, church and language protected. History has shown that these people were forced out of Europe 500 years ago in search of freedom and settled in Southern Africa, only then to be pushed inland by the English colonisers to start again in the interior. Hopefully this new start will mean the end of constantly having to move to live in freedom and protect their unique culture.
Again, thank you for your wonderful tours of this beautiful country, which reminds me so much of my own.

I'm Black and I honestly don't see an issue. My understanding is that they don't mind anyone visiting though they just won't let anyone who isn't Afrikaans residing to preserve their culture. it doesn't matter the skin colour.
They are thousands of villages across Africa who doesn't accept foreign migration though they are tolerant to visitors.
    This is no exception.
These people are white Africans just as there is black Americans etc.
But then again media will divide us in the name of racism as they have done for decades.
To me they appear to be a peace loving community just just like the bushman in Botswana.

I was a biology/science teacher at Hopetown from 1985 to 1987 and eventually married a beautiful Hopetown girl. We were happily married for 34 years until she passed away after a long illness. All the high school students from Oralia attended Hopetown High School. The building of the then Van Deer Kloof Dam and irrigation canals were completed when I arrived. So the project was initiated and completed under the governance of the National Party.
No matter what happens with Orania, whether it remains it’s current size, or grows to a city, the Orania people has already succeeded in their goals and did pretty well at it.

Orania was founded and built by Dept of Water Affairs when water infrastructure was developed. When that was done, they left and the town was left uninhabited until Prof Carel Boshoff and his mates acquired it by buying it from Govt. Their vision was to preserve Afrikaner culture. I need to explain that all Afrikaners are not Boers.
Water works was a major job creation programme post-WWI already, and to counter the marginalization of impoverished folks after the Anglo Boer War, WWi, the Great Depression, Spanish Flu, etc. Even after 1948, Afrikaners could not own more than 49% equity in any business and jobs were the preserve of Anglophones. Afrikaners had to knock at the back door when visiting.
Afrikaner - traditionally Afrikaans-speaking of mostly European descent
Boer (with a capital B) - Afrikaner whose ancestors participated in the 1838 Great Trek
    boer (lowercase b) - farmer
There is much confusion about this, local and abroad
A bit of history and geography: Orania isn't uniquely exclusive as I can think of so many towns in South Africa where whites aren't allowed, or even only members of a certain German denomination can buy property, yet they have to be non-white. For example, in the Eastern Cape there is Mnyameni, and elsewhere Wupperthal, Tesslaarsdal, Elim, Melkhoutfontein and so many more.
Orania is a cultural village, not a racist one. It isn't an apartheid (segregation) statement either. Few know this, but apartheid was introduced by the British in the Cape in the 1800's. Prior to the invasion of 1806, all had freedom of association, speech and movement. People even lost suffrage (voting rights) only after the British came. The Communist Party under Karl Marx was first to put segregation/apartheid in the constitution, but changed that later on as Marx wanted to exploit workers by preusoming to "care for them through trade unions." Just his way to get free soldiers. This is factual and the knowledge in the public domain.
In the 1960 Verwoerd referendum, 1 out of 2 whites voted against apartheid, this is a fact. But the British and Communist media was loaded and waged war against the God-fearing (at the time) Afrikaners.
My take on Orania is to take from them what obviously works, and replicate elsewhere. Mnyameni has approached them for partnership and a deal was signed log ago. The positive side of Orania is how well it is managed, how orderly and neat the town is, like South Africa was in the 1960's and 1970's. People have opinions, because facts die first when they opine.
Orania doesn't have a railway that keeps it alive, either.

We found the town exceptionally neat, organised and clean and residents clearly feel safe, which was very refreshing to see. Interesting observation that the town doesn't have a station which keeps it alive. 🚆

I have been to Orania a few times, last was in May 2022. It has changed quite a lot since my first visits in the 80's. In Afrikaans we say " Die plek bars uit sy nate"

It must've been on the chilly side when you were there in May. It was pretty hot on the day we visited the town. We've never been, but we could also see the expansion of the town with new builds and even new suburbs. It's a neat town with friendly people, which makes for a great combination. I'm glad you came along to check it out! 😁🚗

I should very much like to visit this place. I read that they are friends with an all Khoisa town that's nearby. I should like my people (Māori) to learn from this and have our own towns so that we can preserve our language & culture the way Orania are doing it.
