The first one I ever did was in my 95 suburban and it was the same way and I did the same thing and took it to my local machine shop and we sat at a bench and stared at it for about 30 min before the guy said he'll if I know so I came to the same conclusion as a fork type thing. I got a small vice clamp and cut a slot in it with a bench grinder and a cut off wheel and put a socket on the other end and clamped vice grips on the screw part of vice clamp so could turn it and they came out. Very brittle take it slow.

Harbor Freight C-clamps are worthless. The entire clamp bent when trying to remove the pins. Went to a farm store and picked up a Wilton clamp for 12 dollars that was actually forged and heat treated and it didn't bend at all.
