Potentially it is also a how-to book showing you "how to become a greedy jerk alienating your family until you finally reconnect with your nephews in old age", so if use it as a guide, be selective about what lessons you take away from it.

    • @TravisBarton
      @TravisBarton 6 лет назад +11

Cenindo Well, my takeaway was that the big lesson is to NOT do that. Scrooges arc shows the value of family and relationships and how important it is. While Scrooge discovered this late in his life, we can learn from him now.

No book has had a bigger impact on me than this. Even more than Dostojevkij's Crime and Punishment. A beautiful and stunning book is what it is. I own the version with the extra stories that fills out some holes. For example the time between South-Africa and Australia and the time after he found the gold nugget in Klondike. Truly amazing.

All stories of Don Rosa, so not just the life and times, have been published the last 5 years in the Don Rosa Library by Fantagraphics, most of them are still available for order however volumes 1&2 are currently not available and go for big prices on e-bay! Fantagraphics have however announced that the volumes 1&2 will be reprinted soon. The whole library is worth the grab! Last two volumes are due October this year.

There are lots of artists who have done Duck comics besides Barks and Rosa. You can say that Barks invented the non-cartoonish "story telling" Duck stories (unlike the earlier strips made by Al Taliaferro) and had great success until he stopped in 66. At that point there were several others who had copied his style, and by the 70s Danish Egmont took over and employed Latin American and Spanish artists, of which there are plenty of hidden and overlooked grat artists like Daniel Branca. Even though a lot of these were artists who had other story writers there were also guys like Marco Rota who made long epic stories that became popular, also stories with "Duck continuity" like the birth of Donald Duck. Now Don Rosa has often been criticized for over focusing on continuity, since one of the trademarks of the Duck universe is that not everything hang together: Donald might not have the same house or address in all the stories: they are fit to each story. Don Rosa introduced the concept that the Duck universe had to make sense logically and chronologically. The problem for a lot of old Duck fans is that by doing that he passively implies that all other Duck stories are nullified and purely "fictional" (SIC). He would never make such a claim of course, but some Don Rosa fans have gone pretty far in thinking in terms of pro Rosa continuity, discrediting any story that denies to take part in such a way of thinking, saying that continuity isn't what the Duck universe is all about. Now the fame and success of Life and times of Scrooge McDuck is hard to argue against, yet there are good reasons why some might be more critical as well. I haven't even mentioned the entire Italian Duck universe which is completely a thing of its own.

I personally disregard all the Duck stories that aren't from Barks or Rosa. I consider the Rosa work to actually be canon because it is SO heavily reliant upon Barks. I don't like Strobel, Rota, or Scarpa. Barks was called The Good Duck Artist for a reason. Look in to Kim Weston and his works on Barks. They are astounding. I've gotten to spend a lot of time with Don and yes, he is a pretentious guy and yes he does look down his nose at Ducktales BUT if you're a legit Duck fan you will have great conversations with him. I'm gonna get to hang out with him again this weekend actually and can't wait. I have a whole Don Rosa art gallery hanging on my wall in my gameroom. I also got to see some original Barks art in Baltimore last year with Kim Weston. It was amazing!

Great video! I am actually looking for recommendations. I love these old Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics and am looking for recommendations for comics similar to this. I am not a huge fan of Marvel/DC or any other superhuman/powers type comics and when I look online for comics I can only find info on that stuff.
I am looking for stuff like this:
    Bloom County (heard good things)
    Bone
    Calvin and Hobbes
    Donald Duck by Carl Barks
    Garfield
    Hate (heard good things)
Peanuts (enjoy, but would cost a fortune to own it all haha)
Pogo (heard good things want to get)
    The Complete Far Side
    Uncle Scrooge by Don Rosa
I must be missing some classics?!
I am interested in story, good characters, comedy and clever, I could care less about over the top violence, explosions, superpowers, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Don Rosa made chapters 1 to 12 in the early 90's, these were huge and very popular in Europe. This inspired Don Rosa to write and draw so called B chapters, they are combined in the Companion book and complement Life and Times.

I can happily share that Fantagraphics Press is releasing the "Don Rosa Library" AND "Carl Barks Library" archive editions. Looks like they've been at it for quite some time. I'm putting links in the RUclips video description.

If you want to get The Life and Times they are ALL collected in the Don Rosa Library from Fantagraphics. They are in volumes 4 and 5. The Life and Times is a GREAT story BUT you should also know that they are not the "be all end all" of Don Rosa. Most of my favorite Don Rosa stories aren't even the ones in the Life and Times. Don is one of the most knowledgeable Barks fans in the world and ALL of his stories line up with Barks and sommmmmetimes he changes very minor details for coherency in the timeline because Barks really didn't care about continuity. If you've never read Barks and Rosa you have no idea what you're missing. I love the show, obviously, but the Barks and Rosa comics bury the show badly in terms of quality and truly nailing the characters. I've gotten to hang out with Don a LOT and learn a lot from him. Also I've gotten to hang out with guy named Kim Weston who is possibly the greatest Scrooge McDuck and Barks scholar in the world and he has an actual concordance of EVERY SINGLE CARL BARKS FACT YOU COULD EVER WANT. It is a mammoth book if you're a true Scrooge McDuck fan. But anyway if you want to read The Life and Times you can get the whole collection in Fantagraphics and Don himself told me it's the greatest interpretation of his work and I've even gotten to talk personally with the Fantagraphics people and they are big Rosa and Barks fanboys too. There is also a "Companion" to The Life and Times which fills in even MORE details of the Barks universe and that is also in The Life and Times. Hope you look in to this because Barks is the greatest storyteller ever and Rosa is a huge fanboy of his. STAY AWAY FROM ALL THE SCROOGE STORIES THAT ARE NOT DONE BY BARKS OR ROSA! ESPECIALLY TONY STROBEL STORIES!

hmm definitely American... otherwise he would have known the ongoing relationship with Disney in Europe since the end of the war. donald and his family and friends are much more popular here than in u.s.a. were they pretty much seised the comic industry in the late 1980s
lucky for European artists like me and others we live in Europe and the ducks are still as popular here today as they were in the 1950s

Yes, I'm American. And I'm also aware of the appeal of the Disney comics in Europe to this day. Talking about an American comic doesn't minimize the European comics. This was a spotlight on a book from my collection that I cherish by a creator who I value. It wasn't a history lesson in Disney's duck comics. Thanks for watching.
