"I don't see why anybody cares about Daisy Duck. I just shovel all of her toys into the bottom-most level." Hahaha…
No wonder the Italian comics paid Donald up with an Italian only character Reginella & not with Daisy
Nice tribe profile picture fam
I thought he would be much older. Thanks for countless hours of comic-book immersion, Mr. Rosa! You're a true inspiration.
I was pleased to meet the man two years ago when he was visiting Finland. We talked like an hour or so when I interviewed him to local paper. I learned to respect him ever more both as an artist and as a man with principles.
You were my hero growing up, i can't thank you enough for the countless hours i have spent reading your stories. The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck remains to this day one of my favorite pieces of literature. I.O.U
Finnish publications very well represented. Excellent!
"Obliterate the Mouse". That has to be the best quote in the Universe.
this must be one of the best thing on RUclips, heck the whole Internet! Don Rosa is our generations Carl Barks!
It's outrageous that cheap ass Disney and the comic publishers don't pay royalties to guys like Rosa and Barks. I'm certain that without them, Disney would have lost a SUBSTANTIAL part of their income from me over the years, as well as in general from Norway where the Donald Duck comics are extremely popular.
That wasn't the reason, it was because of his increasingly imparied vision.
TheLewisStudio
He wrote an open letter, packed with paragraphs, that not only described the variety of reasons he stopped working for Disney but also summed up his own career and life in a modest, relatable and understandable way and the only thing you take from all of this is something he didn't even actually complain about, words you're putting in his mouth.
Come on, man.
TheLewisStudio Where the fuck did you hear that lol he made a post describing why he quit and I'm sure you would've quit aswell
I'm quite sur I meant that Disney should have paid him more .. but it was a long time ago and my english is far from perfect
@@TheLewisStudio do you work for free?
I grew up with donald duck, and Don Rosa is by far the best - followed by carl barks, marco rota and vicar..
The greats... I always also liked the artists featured in the pocket books here; Cavazzano, Romano Scarpa, Ferioli, and so on.
Ye, they are all great. Ofc what sets Barks and Rosa apart and above from the rest is that they both draw AND wrote their stories while ofc most of the time (atleast in my understanding) these other great artists just merely draw the comics.
I I love it!! “Real wood....off a tree”.....things were built to last and keep. So they Made them beautiful as well. I find it tragic that for at least two plus decades we’ve become a throw away society. But collectors have an admiration for well made items. I really enjoyed this tour and I thank you for allowing us a look into your home. Many things brought back memories. I remember when my friends’ Dad first brought home his VHS video cassette player/recorder with a giant TV (not a flat screen BTW)....they had to be somewhat curved. Anyway, I’m a collector and also collect comics...ECs being some of my favorites!! I love your Duck collection!! Thanks again and very kind Regards,
Pat
PS- Oh, BTW...I also had retinal detachments...both eyes...one in my mid 40s and two years ago a severe detachment and torn in five places. It’s not fun at all and I hope you faired ok. I have some permanent damage but at least I can see.
Such a nice, humble man. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Wish him long and prosper life.
I like Don Rosa even better than Carl Barks. He draws way more detailed. :)
Yeah, but Barks had such awesome nuance and gentility in his story-telling prowess. His stories clipped along at such a great pace. To craft so many stories that were so well-executed requires just as much skill as Don's lovingly-detailed artwork.
Feels so strange but satisfying to see all these greek comic books in his collection :D
Don Rosa is the only reason I still read Donald Duck comics.
9:20 ''ΚΟΜΙΞ'' GREETINGS FROM GREECE!
Obviously he's not just a great Duck storyteller and drawer but also the biggest fan. It doesn't appear to be just his job. But it's shame that those who create the story are more or less ripped off by the publishers.
I’m reading don rosa collection volume 9 right now . And really enjoying it first time I’ve read any of his comics . My favorite is the three Caballeros right again.
If he ever moves houses... oh boy.
+Nuky93
LOL don't see that happening.
Love that Rosa is covering up Mickey. 😂 A man after my own heart.
The collection ΚΟΜΙΞ that appears in the 9:44 mark is not German, it is Greek :) Anyway, this is a very informative video about a true legend, in my opinion. I just discovered it - very late - but I intend to watch any other parts you have on Don Rosa. Thank you very much.
Great artist and great collector too!!!
i love to see that the master himself just a fan on the other site
I'd love to have a house like this someday where everything has a story and brings back memories. Hopefully with a lovely wife as well :).
Right ! Hope you get it
What on earth did Norway give you? A swirl nail? Oh my, you deserve something so much better. Maybe the Nobel Peace Prize! - Big fan from Norway :)
Right !
obenrob I think he has all the rights to do so after making so many of us happy reading his stories
HAHAHAHA!!
"Who are you?"
"What're you doing here?"
Sad to see someone so talented get so little pay, he should get millions
Sadly Disney still mistreats their artists if the Hawkeye show is anything to go by
As someone here mentioned, the Norwegian award looks like "a swirl nail".
And it does look like that, it looks cheap and poor, but here`s a little context:
It`s "Sproingprisen" (The "Sproing" Award). It`s a frequent onomatopoeia in comics, and also the sound associated with a spring device. So the "swirl nail" is a spring device.
On another note: I wonder what Rosa think is so bad about mice. Floyd Gottfredson and, in his footsteps; a lot of Italians have made so many great Mickey-stories. You`d think he`d like an adventurous mouse, since he loves Barks`s adventurous ducks...
+Mister Anthropy Donald and the rest of the ducks are far more relatable and loveable for a lot of people. Mickey just seems too flawless. He's uninteresting as a character.
Frodo Baggins Ⓥ Well, you're right, the ducks are better characters, but also somewhat wrong. There are plenty of stories with Mickey Mouse, in addition to those by Gottfredson, that are brilliant.
I don't think he is uninteresting, and neither do all the people who has made Fantagraphics's Gottfredson-library a success.
Rosa is entitled to his opinion, so are you, but it is an opinion, not a fact.
Mister Anthropy Did it seem like I was presenting my opinions as facts? If so, I apologise. You were asking why Rosa would dislike Mickey. That's what I replied to. :)
Frodo Baggins Ⓥ No need to apologize, these are the reasons why Rosa don't like Mickey.
Don might have liked Mickey better if the Gottfredson stories had been available to him while growing up (like the Duck stories by Carl Barks were). In the issues he had at home (in the collection of his sister), there were only mouse stories that were boring to him, so he didn't care for the character. The Fanta books are actually the first time he's seeing any of the Gottfredson stuff, which hadn't been widely reprinted or collected before in the US.
Don Rosa made me want to draw comics! He is a genius!
I love Don ROsa and his stories. I think it must be more difficult to be true to Carl Barks universe and even expand it. His drawings are lovely and filled with wonderful details. Just finish reading The life of Scrooge McDuck to my daughter. The series got an excellent point! Even failures teaches one a lesson which will help one succeed later on. And at what point should one focus more on family than one's goal.
Best Donald duck writer ever
By far my favorite
Cheap ones expensive ones...
I wonder how much the collection would be worth.
Must be some real collectors gems in all those pieces from so long time period.
(not that I think he would sell them)
@obenrob
I think it is great that he did, that way he's still with us for a long time, at least I hope so.
Jeah, I agree... at least to a certain point...
Well, maybe the fact that he often didnt get payed for all releases and stuff,
that was probably one thing that made him a little bitter.
In another video he talked about that a little longer... Disney actually didnt really dignify his work...
The other thing could be that he is a little bit frustrated cause he cannot draw any detailed stuff anymore, because of his eyes...
But actually to me he looks quite happy...
I think he accepted all that.
This guy is my hero
Too bad he retired
Very interesting! Thank you so much for sharing these insights! 🤗
“Obliterate the mouse”
I love it! ❤️
My favorite Disney artist by far. He brought be a lot of happiness in my younger days. Cool to see this.
Good ol' "Donald Duck Sonderheft" from Germany! Don might not be able to read them, but I'm sure he's very well aware of the odd, enjoyable twist of the late Erika Fuchs that was and is still imbued in these translations.
14:35 🤣im crying right now thats the funniest thing ever
This man is a Freaking Genius !!!!
Does anybody else think that he seems a bit ... bitter?
Don't get me wrong, these videos are a priceless treasure. It just seems that a Don Rosa who doesn't draw has a hard kind of vibe around him.
I think it's more of a matter that Don is a man who knows what he likes and what he doesn't like. To some, he may come across as bitter or even a bit egotistical and hyper-critical. But I can respect someone who knows what they like and can stand strong about it.
He is super bitter.
Well hia works bring in so many millions and the publisher fucks him over
@2:45 - near perfect product placement of t-shirt
😂
This is one of my favorite videos collections are cool you can get a glimpse of a person's soul through what they collect
MAN! THANK YOU FOR THIS!
This is a very nice studio!
Ofc
Curious fact: Don Rosa, America's greatest Disney comic book author, is a distant cousin of Giorgio Cavazzano, Europe's greatest Disney creator.
it's cool how he get's some of those items like trading his art work instead of paying.
Hah he speaks like Hunter S. Thompson in the beginning
01:55 His eyes are going bad and all this time he had a desk lamp from 1940's... I hope this wasn't the reason ;)
THE BEST ATIST OF THEM ALL !!!!!1
His style of drawing is easy my top favorite in Donald duck comics world
I whish that Don Rosa should have his own Museum
16:56 I’ve been finding a lot of the Select-A-vision discs lately. Mostly in thrift stores.
I want a T-Shirt like his!! So cool!!
very great!!!
Yes! :)
Woah. And i thought my collection was big.
09:20 Greek Terzopoulos komix . Good old times
Heh, one thing said about Don Rosa, "You can't be a prophet in your own country"
Heaven!
Thats the kind of studio I would like to work in* 🤣
14:36 I never knew Don Rosa was so based
adorei.
Love how he got danish duck comics

14:40 What’s with the animosity towards The Mouse?
A true genius !
9:45 Is not German, is the Greek!!!
10:00 "and ofcourse the german.." he says it right there. and it is german
It is the German Donald duck that he shows. Under Donald Duck is the Greek Komix

I love Daisy Duck =(
He is amazing, but... how does he clean all these stuff?
Αλίκη Σκούφα He stated in his letter on why he quit making these comics that he still works everyday in his yard and cleaning the house. So I guess he takes like a huge amount of time every month and cleans his office
Vielen Dank für das Video! 👍
This collection is SO nice, I feel kinda sad hes getting rid of most of it
A GIGANT WEB 01:40
Not only great taste in ducks but film too 😂🙃
After the finale to DuckTales 2017, I had to come here in order to remind myself that there are people who know how to write a REAL Uncle Scrooge story.
In the finale, it turns out that Webby is not only a clone... but she's also April. Yes, the same April of April, May and June-- Daisy's nieces. But it doesn't stop there. Webby is also apparently Scrooge's biological daughter?!
Who wrote this?!! Who thought this was okay? That's the top of schlocky writing you would find on Deviantart!
Just... I'm at a loss for words. I know Don would consider himself no better than a fanfiction writer... but his stories feel grounded. Organic. EARNED. True to the character.
DuckTales 2017 jumped the shark big time. What a disaster of writing.
Nice. German is Greek
You are right!
08:46 εχει τα ελληνικα....
ΔΕΝ ΥΠΑΡΧΕΙ ΤΟ ΔΩΜΑΤΙΟ....ΤΙΓΚΑ ΣΤΑ ΚΟΜΙΞ.....
he has uncle scrooge's first dime on his lamp!
9:43 NOT GERMAN THIS IS A GREEK COMIC :p
Awesome
The moment when he Looks like a disney charakter lmao
Can i get some of the spare comics
Isn't this guy super popular in the US?
Nope, anything but that....In USA sadly very few people have even heard about him because people there havent read any Donald or Scrooge related comics since 1950s.....where he really popular is in Europe and especially in northern Europe (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark who have the highest % of Donald Duck comic book readers) as well as somewhat popular also in Netherlands, Germany and Italy.
I mean in USA the only place people know Donald and Scrooge Mcduck these days is from Ducktales as well as seeing them in Disneyland....but thats about it. Also to make it clear Rosa has never worked for Disney and there is actually some bad blood between him and the Disney corporation in USA, where Disney had tried to claim rights to his work (In their view everything and anything related to Disney characters is their property, even stories they never wrote themselves) and thus you might understand why Don Rosa doesnt exactly think highly of them. He even stated that he really hopes Disney doesnt move in to try and make film adaptation of his "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" cause he rightfully fears that Disney would just change it however they see fit and quite possibly even rebrand it as part of Ducktales or something like that.
@@Balnazzardi Great comment, in my eyes Rosa is ranked high above Disney in every aspect, I've totally lost my respect for that company.
It's now money, nothing else that matters for them and they haven't produced a great motion picture animation in decades, which was something they could do at their best and did great job. Not anymore.
@@ChainNonSmoker Well I think they recently stepped it up a bit in these past 10 years, though I again fear they are now just resulting in mostly making sequels for their most popular movies from past 10 years instead of original ideas. But ye other than that I dont think very fondly of Disney either, cause as corporation they are consuming everything and anything out there and their effort to push too much Star Wars out there too fast already bit them in the arse...and resulted in rather poor movies as well, sadly for the fans.
02:03 will esiner !
ahaha i thought the same as you... τον αγαπω κ εγω, μεγαλος φαν του!
8 people like Daisy Duck.
For instance... the German... Sorry Don, but this is Greek language and Greek publications.
