His "feet bibs" are called spats and they were a common clothing item until they fell out of fashion in the 1920's. Those were probably included in his original look to communicate that he is old fashioned and just stuck around because, let's be real, they tie together his fit

French here, yes i can confirm that Scrooge is indeed one of the most popular Disney characters here, he's as much popular as Mickey. He's also have two official French Disney magazines named after him : Picsou Magazine & Super Picsou Geant. His french name is Balthazar Picsou)

Since the duck cartoons are so popular in a large part of Europe (at least that I know of in France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland) I don't get why Disneyland Paris doesn't do anything more with that. There have been Toontowns in both the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Anaheim, but I think a Duckburg-themed area would fare really well in Disneyland Paris (and even more so in the nineties when the park opened).

Those “foot bibs” are called Spats haha! And the Dino bash Scrooge is based off his design in the new Ducktales! I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s team are MASTERS at honoring their roots and referencing it. As a childhood fan of the original, it completely blew it out of the water! My favorite show of all time!

11:20 Those are his spats! Also, I believe that the Dino Bash Scrooge is based on the Ducktales 2017 series and was probably there to promote the release. This version of the show involved many references to the Don Rosa and Carl Barks comics, as well as involving characters from the 1987 series of the show.

YES! My family went before Covid happened and Uncle Scrooge and launchpad we’re both at Donald’s Dino bash, and they both are in the 2017 reboot attire

The 2018 Dino scrooge design is based off of the David Tennant voiced one from 2017, because those tiny elements like the spats that Dan mentioned look like the cartoon version. At least that's my theory and I'm sticking to it! XD
My biggest fear regarding ducktales is that the 2017 versions of the characters as well as new characters like Della and Lena are just gonna get ignored and forgotten.
They are in the comic books. I do agree that that isn't nearly enough representation for them, though.
For real! I would love to see a redesign of all the ducks in the 2017 duck tales style. It would be amazing. As well as introducing more characters like Fenton and Della into the parks
In Lena’s case, I don’t think Kimiko Glenn is helping in that regard, as she immediately went from one of the best and most interesting characters in Disney TV Animation history to Baby Sharks and My Little Ponies. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just too much of a whiplash for my liking

The Dino Bash costume I believe is a reference to the DuckTales reboot (as well as the comics)
Every time he calls his spats foot bibs it just cracked me up. I grew up on Duck Tales, so this was extremely fascinating to me.
I think I have an explanation as to why Scrooge eats coins...

God i love scrooge he is by far my favorite character of those classic characters. I grew up reading his comics alongside a lot of others kinds of Disney comics, and i just found him to be the best written and well rounded character. Can’t help but love him.

He's wearing pince-nez (pinch nose) eyeglasses, and wearing driving gloves - he doesn't have feathers over his coat, haha.
He's also not wearing shoes, boots or "feet bibs", he's wearing spatterdashes (spats) over his feet. It was common for men to wear these over their shoes from the Victorian era to the early 20th Century as the roads were often dirty, muddy and covered in horse manure.
I guess it takes a little bit of historical knowledge to understand characters who wear period themed clothing.

I love Ludwig Von Drake! I am bummed that he didn’t keep popping up in things, but I’m glad he at least paved the way for Uncle Scrooge. That color song from the show where he just sings color names was a FUNDAMENTAL part of my childhood and I don’t even know where I heard it from lmao
I find it a little weird that they seem to pair Scrooge with Daisy a lot. If they wanna have a female counterpart for him that's not significantly younger and already with Donald, they could make Goldie as a walk around character. They should totally make Della too, because she was amazing in the reboot.
yeah, except traditionally Goldie wanted to kill him. Very different from the new show.
Goldie was also a seductive thief and Scrooge did NOT like thieves. 😶
I think because Donald is frequently grouped with Goofy, or Mickey and Minnie, so Daisy gets dropped to a lower tier with either Scrooge or the triplets. I dont think anyone is trying to make her seem like his counterpart.

I actually showed my nephew very recently the Disney Christmas sing-a-long that has Scrooge in it. We both jumped at closeups that show him with those blue demon eyes 😳😳
I remember teading the very old Dutch Donald Duck comic books that came in the mail every week.
What a joy that was to read and discover new adventures of the duck family and more.

I do too! Hopefully someday I'll get the chance to see them in person. Mickey's Christmas Carol was actually my first introduction to Scrooge McDuck when I was little.

Huge fan of your work! Would you ever consider doing a (and if you have that's great) Distory on Disney on Broadway? I am a University Musical Theatre instructor and would love to collaborate on such a project! There are some fun deep dives like the Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Stage show at Radio City Music Hall in 1979. It is iconic. Anyway, love your work! Heading to Disneyland next week!

Mickey's Christmas Carol was my first intro to Scrooge and he was and still is my favorite duck

Scrooge is by far one of my favorite Disney characters. I got to meet him at the Dino Bash thing in 2019, I was only able to take a day trip to Disney then and my friends indulged in me so I could see him lol. The costume is so nice and it's so cool to see all the fun variants... that I'll never see irl! Ah well, I'm happy I got to meet the one I did!
I never watched Duck Tails. Maybe this will be my inspiration!

Edit: To be more specific! in life and times of scrooge mcduck he trades an expensive rich mans suit for the red jacket thing he's known for in the don rosa stories and that's basically his only suit and even if it gets torn he will just patch it

Those "foot bibs" are spats. They were once used by well to do men to keep their shoes clean in the days of unpaved roads and horse drawn transportation. The 1930 audiences would have understood that this was a duck of means and class.
Honestly I hope the 2017 duck costumes stick around. Or at least add the elements from the show to newer costumes. Especially for the triplets so they are actually more distinct than just color. Like Dewey's adorable plumage on his head is so cute

Actually, I love it. But the Pinstripes suit for him is cute. Probably, I’m a girl and I like certain things that looks cool, cute or totally out there. I’m weird that way sometimes, 😂. As for the Blue suit with the red color, definitely my favorite. But I love the change they did on the only update of Scrooge, for the Ducktales show of the red suit with black outer color. That’s still the old-school call back. The blue suit is something I remember within the Kingdom Hearts game, since he wears that color pretty well.

I just came back from Disneyland Paris, 2 days spent, and I didn't see any sign of Scrooge at all... you honestly couldn't convince me he was even considered in the park 'cause I saw no trace. I looked at all the merch, bought a bunch of pins, checked out the plushies, shirts, etc... in nearly every shop, saw several characters, watched the parades... no Scrooge. Bums me out, I love Scrooge and would have liked to see him.

We haven’t seen Scrooge since we’ve been to Disney World back in October of 2011 for our first time vacation. One day, we’ll find him and meet him soon.

Couple of things, In that original Donald duck cartoon the Scottish duck was being seen as frugal And frugal was being seen as a good thing. They wanted to him to spend this money properly And not a throw it away on a silly things. Additionally, The feet covers Are called spats. They were meant to go over your shoes To keep dirt off of them. Otherwise, I like the video and thought you did some pretty good research.

I really would love to see a revamp of all the ducks in the 2017 duck tales versions! Knowing this is how most audiences are gonna know the ducks now and seeing as this is one of my comfort shows. I would love to see it. Scrooge the triplets, Fenton and even seeing Della would be amazing!

I remember in 2010 when my family was staying at Fort Wilderness, we were passing by Hoopdee-Doo and they had a surprise Scrooge meet set up (it was during the Christmas season so it makes sense), but it was super quiet since it was a resort in the middle of the day. It was a really fun meet and his autograph is one of the few I have. I wasn’t the meet-and-greet type as a kid but he‘s such a rare character and there was no line so I just had to say hi!
I love how you have the Donald puppet in the background with top hat and glasses since they haven’t made a Scrooge puppet yet.
I hope Folkmanis will make Scrooge, though I have considered getting another Donald puppet to change into a Scrooge
