- EXPLAINING DISNEY #20
I take a look at the evolution of Scrooge McDuck, the old rich, stingy miser of an uncle of Donald Duck and Disney’s most beloved comic created character, right from his first appearance in Carl Barks’ Donald Duck Comic ‘Christmas on Bear Mountain’ to his first screen appearances including ‘Scrooge McDuck and Money’ and ‘Mickey’s Christmas Carol’ to Don Rosa’s iconic comic arc The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck his iconic run on ‘DuckTales’ to today’s ‘Ducktale’s’ reboot series. I also briefly touch on the prototype Scrooge appearance, The Thrifty Saver in Donald Duck WWII Propaganda short ‘The Spirit of ’43’
I take a look at how Scrooge’s look, appearance and personality changed and softened over time as he transitioned into his own comics series and then onto the big screen - as a follow-up to my previous videos “Evolution of MICKEY MOUSE Over 90 Years (1928-2018) Explained”, “Evolution of DONALD DUCK Over 85 Years (1934-2019) Explained”, “Evolution of HUEY, DEWEY & LOUIE Over 82 Years (1937-2019) Explained”, ”Evolution of GOOFY Over 87 Years (1930-2019) Explained”, “Evolution of MINNIE MOUSE Over 91 Years (1928-2019) Explained”

I honestly cant think of another character who can move from being a villain to a hero as scrooge. No matter if hes nice or a tosser, hes always Scrooge and it always works.
Not really, he wasnt that kind of villain at any point....he might have been more bit more of a "bully" kind of character in Barks original comics, but thats about it.
That's true. He's even more versatile in this regard than Donald and Daffy. Even at his worst, Donald is never that bad a guy nor does he work as an antagonist, and even at his best, Daffy is never that heroic.
R.I.P. Scrooge
He's arguably a villain in the "Hoodoo Voodoo" story, and some of Barks' later, bitter Junior Woodchucks stories, as well as some of the old and weird Italian stories...
I can! Spinel.
Scrooge McDuck is easily one of the greatest Disney characters.
Yes he is!
Also: Huey , Dewey, and Louie have been in the show biz than Scrooge
The triplets:82
Scrooge 72
He is definitely the coolest classic cartoon Disney character.
He truly is
We need a ducktales ( whoo-oo! ) season four. And I agree with you completely
Alan Young will always be a beloved Scrooge to me. His appearance in the Capcom- Ducktales HD is best sendoff to this legendary voice actor as the game feels like a Final episode to the 87 show.

The recent duck tales Scrooge is actually great, and David T providing the voice actually works well, I love modern Scrooge
Definitely agree. I saw the first episode when it was uploaded to YT and I fell in love with it all over again.
you got that right
IKR!!!
Yeah, I also like Scrooge in the 2017 DuckTales. He's really fun!
Yeah, not to criticize Alan Young's performance (he was great), but Tennant is actually Scottish, so there's more authenticity. Some of his inflections and expressions just work a lot better, I think.
Scrooge will always be a "mainly comic" character. Especially outside US.
I mean, he appears in 19.000 different stories... only about about 3.000 of them are from US.
Italy and Denmark produced (and are still producing today) something like 10.000 comic stories with Scrooge... His appereances on the screen, while beloved, will always be a very small part of the character....
True, but you have to admit. The original DuckTales TV series' popularity did turn Scrooge into a household name that changed him from a rather niche if well-regarded character to one of their most popular.
Only 19?
Luna Smith he meant 19K😂
@@tcrpgfan Maybe in the U.S. In Europe DuckTales is just yet another 90's cartoon. It is absolutely DWARFED in importance by the actual comics.
Most of the important comics are listed at Inducks. Some have been translated into English by Gladstone, Disney Comics and Fantagraphics, if I remember correctly.
And there's also a lively scene of Disney comics being produced in Netherlands and in Brazil, although the Brazilian comics don't seem to be as commonly translated.
Scrooge is my favorite Disney character of all time. I love his personality and I find him the most interesting and complex out of all of Disney's characters. Here's to another seventy-two years of Scrooge McDuck!
Love his internal struggle between his sentimental feelings toward nature and his greed
Also my favorite character of all time too! I’m at Disney world now, they are selling a new mug of Scrooge wearing a pirates of the Caribbean cap!😆 damn right I bought it lol
Loved it! My fave version is the 2017 Ducktales one, we find out he isn’t as greedy and was willing to risk literally ALL of his money just to get Della back!
I was glad to see the writers for this show finally give a good role to Della Duck (aka Donald's sister and the triplets mom). In fact, part of what I love about the reboot is how it portrayed its female characters in general. They were smart, capable characters and their male counterparts treated them with respect.
I love Scrooge, Alan Young will always be my favorite but David Tennant does a good spin on Scrooge too.
Agreed!
@Jason Kott Andrea Campbell.
The Barks Donald Duck ten-pagers and the Scrooge series remain some of the best comics stories ever plotted, written, drawn, or published. Barks was the master, and all the rest are his pale disciples. He wrote what were considered children's comics but he never talked down to or condescended to his audience, child or adult.
Well now I'm intrigued.
Larry Brennan And Don Rosa ?
I have to say that while Scrooge has had a lot of memorable appearances in both comics and animation over the years... he was never better than when written and drawn by his creator, Carl Barks. To this day, Barks's Scrooge remains the most well-rounded and three-dimensional version of the character.
Don‘t forget Don Rosa ;)
2017 DuckTales is hands down my favorite Scrooge appearance.
Hey now he is 2019 's scrooge ok
@@anantonyproduction The series started in 2017 though.
ahem fair enough
Carl Barks and Don Rosa comics are my favorite.
I loved Don Rosa's biography of Uncle Scrooge mainly because he did his research and put all the things Barks had written together into a full story.
Same here :)
@@richardranke7878 not to mention made Scrooge a friggin badass and his artstyle is absolutely RICH in details.
these comics where my childhood. so good
Scrooge McDuck is my favourite character of Micky franchise. Love Don Rosa's comics in particular. He is simply much more complex than the rest of these characters and not one-dimentional greedy capitalist or wealthy philantropist stereotype.
By the way, some inspiration of Indiana Jones is from Barks' Scrooge comics.
Carl Barks's Scrooge is my favorite version of the character and Don Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is my favorite Scrooge story.
well Rosa himself says counting it as one story is unfair to other stories.

Yes I did watch season 1 of the reboot before
This new Duck Tales seres is brilliant.
Altar360 Some might say a good Disney remake
Mickey Mouse it’s a great reboot, period. The ATLA of reboots IMO. I was the one person I knew who didn’t care for Ducktales in the 90s besides the bomb ass theme song and the artwork initially gave me pause. Then my own niece and nephew were watching the pilot and I got hooked xD
NOOO! Its awful
@@Obseltus ...sagt "Irgendein Typ"
Irgendein Typ that’s your personal opinion. A very unpopular one too. It’s got a 4.8/5 star rating on google, more than 95% have liked it, I don’t know what you’d see wrong with it. Actually wait: there are two things that kinda get on my nerves, the fact that huey Dewey louie and Webby all have bigger heads than the adults and sound like grown men and women. But those are minor flaws, in general I think the show is brilliant! Again, my personal opinion and you’re also entitled to yours. It’s not necessarily right or wrong.
I love Scrooge McDuck, both in the comics and animation. Picking a favorite appearance would be nearly impossible, but I suppose it's got to be the original Carl Barks comics
Yeah and as an Emoji in Disney Emoji Blitz he has one of the best coin-giving powers out of other such Emojis like Wall-E, Jack Sparrow, Dug and others
Me Don Rosa he balanced all his aspects
I'm a child of the 1980s, so "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and the original "Duck Tales" will always be close to my heart. I am loving the reboot of "Duck Tales".
Scrooge is my 2nd favorite Disney character; I'm glad you made this video.
I love ducktales Its now my favorite show :3
I LOVE Don Rosas Scrooge McDuck stories, especially the ones that take place in the Wild West, especially Yukon. The setting, his love of nature and greed replacing that love while having somewhat of a relation with Goldie are all amazing plots.
My experience is that Scrooge from the 2017 Ducktales is the most, what you would call, lovable version in the history of the character. He's barely driven by anything other than the thrill of adventure, and preferably with those closest to him. In all previous versions I've seen there's more of a materialistic grasping sense to his character.
2017 Scrooge loves money as much as any other version of Scrooge but there is no doubt that he values adventure more then any other version. He owns a multi-trillion dollar business and has all the money in the world but was utterly miserable until the nephews inspired him to go on adventures again, not even for the treasure, the thrill of adventure is what he missed and I think that's what makes him my favorite version of the character.
At the same time, the 87 cent solution does show that he's still incredibly sensitive about being robbed.
He is tad too perfect in the new Ducktales, in terms of moral character and his ability to do anything physical apparently despite being elderly. To me he is more interesting when he is concocted with his money grabbing nature and stingy ways and his love for his family and it also is great for comedy and for Donald’s character in those occasions where he is in the wrong or fails and actually needs Donald after mistreating him.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 I have to agree. Ducktales '17 Scrooge is too idealized to be really interesting. The hard edge and conflicting morals is what makes him an interesting character in the first place. No one really understood Scrooge better than Carl Bakrs, despite so many authors having worked with the character. But Barks remains the best still.
Mischaracterization isnt a good thing, chief
You finally made a video of this YEEEEES
Finally Scroogie 😄
"The Life and Time's of Scrooge Mcduck" is one of the best comics, I've every read.
I have the Boom kids reprints and boy they still hold up today as they did back then found the second volume by pure luck it was at a comic book store in Hamilton Ontario and it was just siting there so I took one or two looks at it thinking this was a dream but no it was real so i bought it and fell in love with it then a few years later I got volume one for my birthday!!!!!
@@PieFights cool. I bought it, because I saw an analysis-video of the new DuckTales. In this video, the narrator said, that today's picture of Scrooge was heavily influenced by "Life and Time's of Scrooge Mcduck". And he added, that this is his favourite comic, so I decided to buy it too. And I must say, that it is one of the best, I've ever read. My favourite Chapter is "The Terror of the Transvaal" 😄. [Little info by the way, I'm german and here, you can buy all chapter's of "LaT" in one book. And short storys, statements of Don Rosa and bonus chaper are included too.]

Schuber 70 Euro
I loved Alan Young"s $crooge, but I also love David Tennant"s. Young made $crooge sound like a lovable granduncle type.
Tennant"s is spry, and witty. Sarcastic at times, even. He's still very likable, though.
My favorite version is in comics by Carl Barks and Don Rosa and as well as in Italian comics. As far as animation is concerned, it is a favorite in Ducktales original and it's not bad in the reboot and also great at Mickey's Christmas Carol. Why does Disney do not make movies like The Life and Times of Scrooge?
Rosa’s Scrooge is a tad more grumpy and mean spirited towards Donald and more accomplished as a person so not quite the same. But I love them both.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 True, but you have to know that Scrooge is both the best and the unlike in animation (except in Duck Tales Movie and Mickey's Christmas Carol) that portrays him as a kind and adventurous, but not as a scapegoat, selfish, acquisitive and hefty banker who he is. That's why I prefer Donald as a real uncle than Scrooge, even though he's not a bad uncle to his grandnephews.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 i agree, the rosa scrooge is much different. But to be honest i think Rosa knows the character better than Barks. As Barks never cared for any consistent characters!
not counting the recent Ducktales, IMO, the best appearances of Scrooge are the ones in the comics by Don Rosa. His detailed artstyle and clever writting made "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" my absolutely favourite comic book saga and I proudly own the 3 volumes.
What do you mean 3 volumes? As far as I know, there's only 2 volumes for the life and times of scrooge McDuck. Am I missing something?
To me there are two versions Stingy comic book scrooge and ducktales scrooge.
Don Rosa is probably my favorite content creator period. His stories are like nothing else
Alan brought this duck to life in a way that made him as full of a character as Bill Farmer's Goofy or Jim's Pete. Tremendous shoes to fill.
Young(may he rest in peace) and Tennant I think are Scrooge’s best voices
Of course they are.
Side Trivia for The Life & Times of Scrooge. Years later in 2014, a music album was released as a sort of "soundtrack" for the comic by Finnish composer/keyboarder Tuomas Holopainen best known for his work with the symphonic metal band Nightwish. Don Rosa even did the album's cover art.
I reccomend giving it a listen, it's beautiful.
Here's the tale of old McDuck who lied and cheated and ran amok! May be the schemer to make a buck, but honored his family who brought him luck! So beloved is this character! Thank you for this video!
He made his fortune square my good sir!
Although we don’t see him in shorts that much this guy is an absolute comic book legend, in Europe particularly people can’t get enough of him
The life and times of Scrooge McDuck, in general, all what Don Rosa did to the duck universe is among the best imo. Barks created the seed for all the goodness Don Rosa later gave us.
Don Rosa and Ducktales features my favorite takes on Scrooge. One thing I've always loved about him, aside from his skill for making every honest buck possible, is that while at times he may seem as human and easily overwhelmed as everybody else, the second somebody or something threatens his fortune or his family, he goes "King of the Klondike" and "Highland Hero" ballistic!
"I don't know what was wilder in those days. The wolves . . . or ME?!"
If there's one thing you can respect Scrooge for, it's the idea to have your very own _Money Bin_ on top of having the rest in a bank. That's what I call being _Smarter than the Smarties_
What is great with the money bin, is it's basically your grandparents' dimes and pennies box, except 3 cubic acres large.
No question, my favorite Scrooge McDuck appearance is in Mickey's Christmas Carol! Despite all of the different versions of A Christmas Carol that have been made, that adaptation remains one of my absolute favorites. I tear up at the end every single time. Fantastic video! Keep it up!
(P.S. Possible correction: The "kilt" in the one comic book panel you mentioned at 3:47, I'm pretty certain that's, actually, just supposed to be a tartan blanket that he has draped over his lap for the car ride and not a kilt that he's, actually, wearing. Which would explain why it's only seen in one panel).
The only reason why Donald duck and Scrooge McDuck are the favorite characters in the Disney cannon is because people can relate to them
Where is professor von drake evolution
You are a strong man
It's coming soon, but Dave can't guarantee when. Also, I always found it strange that Scrooge and Von Drake look really similar.
Scrooge McDuck - maybe the greatest comic book characters of all time. From the other media I prefer the DuckTales-2017-reboot, because it's the truest adapgion to Duck-comics all over the world. 👍
Missed the DuckTales games that were AMAZING
[Moon Theme Intensifies]
My favourite version is that one in the Ducktales reboot and in the comics of course. 💕
Lacks of the evolution of Scrooge in the comics - where he comes from. After he grew in popularity under Barks' pencil, many Disney artists of the same era, including Tony Strobl and Al Taliaferro, wrote him stories. Then, in the beginning of the 60's, he became a central piece of the Italian Disney Ducks comic universe, with a first appearance in a 1952 Guido Martina story. The Italians extensively depicted throughout decades a more mischievous character, centered on his Duckburg businesses and his rivalry against Rockerduck, while adopting the Carl Barks' casting of characters. After Barks retired in the 60's, the character lost in popularity in the US. His European life was renewed in the 70's thanks to the first generation of artists who grew up being fans of Scrooge, firstly Daan Jippes' Dutch school. Then would come, in the 80's, the German and Danish artists and even South Americans (there was a Brazilian edition of Duck comics, and Chilean artist Vicar was very appreciated by Barks himself). Meanwhile, the Italian comic world, under the influence of Romano Scarpa and his disciple Giorgio Cavazzano, got a life of its own, with its own codes, characters (Paperetta, Brigitta...) and running gags. To the exception of Marco Rota, who, in my opinion, is the only Italian artist authentically trying to emulate Barks. Italian edition is HUGE. Every month, more than a dozen of publications come to the market with new or reissued stories !
Maybe for a future one you could do a combo evolution for Goofy Jr./Max and Pete Jr./PJ?

I've been waiting for this one! Scrooge is one of my favorite Disney characters of all time. I grew up watching and rewatching Treasure of the Lost Lamp and Mickey's Christmas Carol a lot so I'd say those are my favorite appearances.
So glad to finally see this one. The heavy comics origin was a nice change-up for such a classic character. I know it's been alot of duck characters lately, but I hope to possibly see Professor Ludwig Von Drake in the near future-especially a look into his Paul Frees days, it was a very interesting character back then in the "Adventure in Color/Mathmagicland" days.
Had no idea there was so much Uncle Scrooge stuff out there---comics, cartoon appearances etc. I used to read Scrooge stories in the early-mid 50's, but lost track since. Very interesting video. Fun, for an old-time Uncle Scrooge fan. Have to check some of this out! Thanks for the video!
Duck Tales and his version of A Christmas Carol is how I know him, growing up in the early 90s. When I was in my early teens, I was so glad to see the Christmas Special for House of Mouse bring the classic movie back. That’s the Scrooge I know and love, and being half Scottish but pure American, always gave me a sense of pride despite 30 years of me failing to replicate his voice and accent, lol...
Well done on this fantastic mini history of Scrooge, one of my all time favourite characters. As I grew up with Ducktales, its got to be my favourite Scrooge moment, but I adore Mickeys Christmas Carol. Alan Young made him a delightful character bless him, but good to know he is still much loved :)

His Carl Barks and Don Rosa stories are treasures beyond anything I have read over these last 40+ years of reading and collecting 39,000+ comics.
Oddly I never cared for DuckTales because of the change they made to his personality but I totally see why so many people loved that version. Hey even I have to admit to loving the DuckTales theme song, lol.
As far as favorite Scrooge story I have to go with the Carl Barks classic “North Of The Yukon” from Uncle Scrooge #59 (September 1965). I love this story and Barko is one of all time favorite one time supporting characters in all of the Disney Duck Universe.

All I think you really missed for English media (and as it's rare there's not even any fault for it ;P ) is that there was an animation test for DuckTales that was drawn by comic legend Romano Scarpa(!!). It used to be up on RUclips, though I'm not sure if it is anymore, and of course technically it could be folded in under the DuckTales umbrella anyway. I just think it's awesome it exists anyway.

Well, it's clearly the 2017 DuckTales version for me, as it's also one of the best modern cartoons I've watched in recent years.
I was first aquainted with Scrooge McDuck from a Board Game During Christmastime of 1974.I got to see comics with him in them from the 70s and even ones adapted into Those Duck Tales Cartoons in which in most of them he became the guardian of his Great Nephews when donald went into The Navy..
As you can see from my profile picture, I love the new Ducktales, man. Scrooge in that show is probably the best Scrooge there is in my personal opinion.
This has aged well lmao
Uncle Scrooge in A Disney Christmas Carol is the best, that special really comes off as the resurgence of traditional Disney animation after Walt's passing. I'm surprised it hasn't been more talked about on RUclips.
I love your videos💫 But please, do a video about Darkwing Duck next🌊
Darkwing is quite new character who has not been used much and isn’t in the comics so it would be quite short video.
I am happy you gave attention to comics, although you kind of had to with Scrooge.

My favorite is hands down, Life and time of Scrooge Mcduck, I was given it as a Christmas gift when I was about 10 years old (I am Danish by the way) and know each frame by heart and even brought it with me to the wilderness of Mongolia and back again when I was a child.
This is one of the few comics I want to get my hands on--not just a digital copy. I just want to read it like it was meant to be read.
I'd've been more into comic books if those Disney ones had been bigger here in the U.S.
I hope it didn't disapoint!
I'm very curious about Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck after doing this video. I've never delved into the entire arc -- looks like there's a boxset coming out later this year, a reprint of the entire run! I might have to grab it.
@@ZipplyZane nothing compares to a hard copy and rather than just a comic, then it's a book ^^
@@DaveLeeDownUnder: I must admit, i was a bit dissapointed you did not delved into the work itself, because many important figures and their parents (or at least grandparents) come into conflict with Scrooge and interestingly enough, then his lucky dime in Denmark is a danish 25 øre coin.
It's an absolut must for anyone who likes this character, gives a very diffrent perspective and one gain alot of respect and sympathy, as well as introduces the origion of Bombie the Zombie, which I consider his worst enemy, because he cannot die or be defeated, only evaded.
I used to have a paperback copy of "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" and it was one of my favourite books when I was a kid. But I read it so many times that it fell apart and, unfortunately, I had to recycle it. I might buy a new copy, one that's hardcover so that it'll last longer.
I love Scrooge in the new ducktales!
I was just hoping you'd do one on him!!
I am slightly surprised DuckTales Remastered isn't mentioned as part of his video game appearances, but great work anyway!!
One of my favorite Disney characters
Scrooge McDuck is my favorite Disney character! Thank you!
Thank *you* for watching!!
Carl Barks, Jack Kirby and Will Eisner are three of my all time favorite artists, I’ve got a box of the earliest Walt Disney Comic And Stories with his earliest Donald Duck comics from 1943 to 1945 including his first ongoing comic series.
Walt Disney Comics and Stories #31.
One of the greatest of my opinion from Disney. I fell in LOVE with Donald then when Ducktales came to be I soon fell in LOVE with Scrooge. It wasn't till years after the original show that I found out he was thought up by Carl Barks in comic way before he was in animated form. So then came my obsession to start collecting comics of any of the Duck family......especially Scrooge.
I like the fact according with Rosa's literation, young Donald kicked Scrooge so his uncle became old, grumpy and angry. Donald transferred his spirit into Scrooge for a decade.
First time I saw him was in the Disney Christmas Carol and then Duck Tales! Love the old curmudgeon!!!
I haven't read the comics but the Christmas Carol special was great and I LOVE both DuckTales series, in different ways. And Scrooge is great in all of them.
scrooge mc duck is one of my favourite characters and i love him in ducktales of 2017 he was awsome
This could be nostalgia talking, but my favorite versions of Scrooge will always be his appearances in Mickey's Christmas Carol and Treasure of the Lost Lamp. So glad he's still getting air time and comic time!
Great video about Scrouge. Favorite so far is the reboot, since I don't read the old comics much, probably should in the near future. Can't wait for you to tackle on the other comic introduced characters like Magica and Gladstone, along with TV introduced characters like Von Drake.
You should definitely read the comics. (also, Calling them old feels weird, since the latest issues probably date back to last wednesday or Something.)
It dépends on where you live (for example, if you're in the US you'll probably have to get these comics online or in specialized shops, but in Europe, you should find them in the closest grocery store).
I'd recommend you to start with the barks classics (Only A Poor Old Man is definitely the place to start, and was written as such), and then to read it all (jk, it is impossible :-) though the Life and Times is a must.
@@wordart_guian I was referring to the first releases. But maybe I should try the newer issues first.
@@kaylemathewcomendador7614 The thing is, you could begin in medias res no matter where you begin (I myself began with 1970s italian stories from my parents' collections). Though of course it's better to read the prequels before the sequel for obvious reasons.
Obviously the Barks stories are technically old (though they didn't get old), but I Always feel weird when duck comics are called "old comics" because it makes them sound like a thing of the past.
Easily one of my favorite character of all time. I love this guy
Scrooge McDuck is really awesome this is awesome
His hair seemed to keep changing from a beard to actual hair to cheek feathers? Sometimes I can't even tell what it's supposed to be haha
It’s supposed to be sideburns.
