I think this video is the best single all in one guide on shin splints - I have watched a ton and seen all the medical, PT, chiro, etc. All helped some but the exercises you showed keep it simple and easier to stick with than all the multiple exercises my PT guy gave me.

    Hello guys,
I have had compartment syndrome in the shins for 10 years.
Sinds I was 12 years old I could not run, play soccer, jump, ride my bike for half an hour, or walk longer than 5 minutes.
Even the 5 minutes were painfull.
I have done a lot of research about how I could possably fix this and prevent to have it again. It became my life goal. I have had a lot of physical therapie and special insoles for my shoes. None of that worked. I have had 2 surgeries on both my shins. Both fascias are cut open because they were too tight around the muscle and my shin muscles have more space to move and grow.
Now at age 22 im starting sports again. Mostly working on the strength and the agility of the calves, hip flexors, glutes.
I also started running again, this time with the forefoot stride. I also switched from running shoes, using the nike free now instead of a pair with big heel and arch support.
I can say from experience that you can recover from injuries like this. With or without surgery. A lot of therapists focus on only the calves and the shoes. But like this man in this video says, work on the glutes and hipflexors too. You need the flexibility for a full range of motion so the muscles can absorb the impact of running to their maximum.
Also I experienced a lot of pain in the heels and the rest of my feet. I am not a fan of arch-supported shoes. Because I have the theory that when your foot is not strong enough to make your form as it is supposed to be, you have to make it stronger by yourself instead of supporting it and let it work even less. I fixed this by starting climbing sports, like wall climbing and bouldering. My feet were getting stronger every month and the pain was gone in a year. I am still fixing my form. But at least the pain is gone now.
I shared my experience because I know how it feels like to have this kind of injury. And I want to let people know that it is possible to fix.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.
I would be happy to share my knowledge to help others out.
    Have a good day.

Finally I started googling my injuries and I couldn’t understand well (en ingles no, no mames, y es español tampoco 😂) then i come to RUclips and found your video about knee pain/runners knee and you opened my mind and showed me a whole new world! I don't find rest works because I took an entire year off from track. Year 2, workout 2 and shin splints are back again.

+kaiyangchen Hi! I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I just got active again on RUclips, so any future questions should be answered within 24-48 hrs. To answer your question it depends on the severity of your shin splints, and the root cause. For example, you may be getting shin splints due to a bad back or hip posture. If you don't get that fixed, you'll never recover. I recommend going to a running store to get your running form analyzed. If your form is good, then you should recover quickly. So what is quickly? If you take care of your shins (icing, resting and strengthening) you may take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to heal up. It takes time, so you need to have some patience. Finally, if you want the absolute best expertise on healing faster, I would recommend checking out a physical therapist. They are the experts in healing shin splints, since they can physically massage and release the tension in your shin splints. Wish this helps you out Kai!!

I'd say your Rolling stick is a lot more effective than us massaging, actually. Both works, but a Rolling stick or a foam roller is better + if you buy one you can use it a lot more often than you'd want to go see your physiotherapist. I do agree looking to us for help, though, but your video and its content are solid and right on the spot.

+Kingof Thecastle Thank you! Are you a physiotherapist? I always advocate preventative measures, but once a chronic injury occurs, specialists can help people to shave off recovery time, and potentially costly and more painful issues down the road. Do you have any recommendations on how to find a good physiotherapist? I'd like to make a future video based on that question.

honestly it sucks because a lot of people say that u need to try going at a different/slower pace and try a new exercise but i’m in a camp training for cross country and the coach makes us do what he wants us to do. we can’t start doing our own run at our own pace and he doesn’t let us stop if we’re in pain. i hope this video will help lol. my shin splints are so bad rn.

That's the worst when you're in a situation where you're forced to run. Rest up during the off season! Try to ice and stretch as mich as you can during your training to manage the pain. I wish you the best in your recovery y friend!

This was an excellent overall video on the topic. The slow motion section on foot strike was great as well. Thanks for this comprehensive overview. It put some things in perspective for me, ie. 6-9 months to transition running style, versus the 6-9 weeks I've been doing it in (massive shin splint issues). Thanks again.
