I tend to get shin splints after 10-15 mins of running and I may not be tired, but my shins can’t handle it. Thank you for showing me that shin splints doesn’t have to limit me for the rest of my life!
Did this really help? How much did it help? How was your experience? Please share.
I would also really like to know if this helped you at all. I don't know if my problem even is shin splints but I also start feeling pain in the area after 10 minutes of running, and at that point my soles start slapping against the thread mill because my leg muscles just quit.
Hey guys. So I completely forgot about this video. But I noticed shin splints haven’t been affecting me as much. I reduced my runs to 3x a week so I have sufficient rest between runs. And they key is not to start too fast. So even if the first km is slower than your normal pace, think of it as a warm up for your shins. In that time I focus on my breathing and I take in my surroundings and before I know it, I’ve run a 5K without any pain

I have JUST started running this past week. I thought I was supposed to just get out there and run, and then the shin splints began. I felt defeated and angry. So instead of giving up, I remembered that I am a beginner and have no clue what I'm doing and started doing some homework. I found out that there is SOOOO much more to running that just running. I've gotten a lot of information from this page and I really want to thank you. These videos are amazing! I will continue to run and put into practice the things I have learned so far and I will keep learning! :)
The same here! Keep learning! Love that! 🙏
Do you swim? I've been swimming with swim fins for about 15 minutes a day and I think it's helped my shin pain a lot.
As a beginner runner and already having the pain from shin splints on the daily even when I’m not running this video was very informative and I will try some of these tips.
how are you today do you still have it?
Stop trying to run everyday!
I stopped shin splints by walking on my heels for several minutes after each run, I would even do it during the day.
This worked for me too!👍
I only do walking and it reduces the pain and could run now in 11km without really feelin the pain
That’s a great supplementary exercise too!
@@TheRunExperience by just simply walking 2.5km a day on a average speed for more than 4weeks it would help you out...also with some drills that could possibly help to get rid of it and patience to it may take a long time but its worth it.😊

Been a runner for 12 years, got my first shin splints this month, thought they'd go away but they didn't. Had to do half my normal weekend run. So frustrating and painful. Great content, will help a lot!🙏
Did you saw any progress?
230lbs guy here been running for 1 1/2 months got my shin splints after 2 weeks been running the last 2 1/2 weeks for some reason when I increase my speed from a jog to a run the shin splints happen less
Why?
I use to get them really bad when I started running and it was worse in my left leg. I thought it was my shoes so I changed them and it didn't work.
What did work was:
-rolling out my calves.
-walking on my heels and then my tippy toes.
-calf raises in the gym.
In my own non-medical opinion, I think my calves were tight and weak and they needed stretching and strengthening. I was brand new to running and about 240lbs and this worked for me within in two weeks. My shin splints were gone and I haven't had any for at least 2 years.
Big Will thanks for sharing!
Big Will thx! I’m going to try this! I’m new to running too.
What do you mean with rolling out your calves?
Big Will I’ve been running for 2 years I weighed about 225-230 IBS I’d say I lost a good amount of weight I now weigh 210
That’s the exact same thing my physical therapist told me to do, it’s just I have to strengthen the muscle below my calf and stretch out the muscle and calf a lot
Imagine I'm running with my dad and he is 50 and I'm the one having to stop cause the shin pain gets so much. It's so disheartening.
True af
Literally me at the park.... getting lapped by people in their 60s, while I’m in my 20s
Well, running is one of the very few sports where you actually get better with age. To a limit of course. But I know plenty of 50+ people that can run like crazy!
Stay strong. You'll get better one day
Wanted to come back to this to tell everyone to take it slow and keep going! I used the C25K app, which uses a walking and running method. Got my stamina and consistency up, the majority, if not all, of my leg pain is gone now, and I’m able to run about 6 miles non-stop right now at a 10 min pace. My 5K is being run at an 8:30 min pace per mile.
All to this to say, consistency is key! I’m floored because I was literally limping at one point and I couldn’t consistently run. Just take it slow and build on baby steps day by day.
This video really helped me with my form. After doing consistent days of this, I notice my shins actually start to loosen up! Make sure you check the other videos on running form if you’re still struggling - it took me 2 solid weeks of running slow and being really focused on my form to actually make a lasting correction

THANK YOU!!! I've been battling shin splints since February 2019. I've changed my shoes twice and both times it was a nice temporary fix. My shin splints have kept me from training the way I wanted to. I've been ok the past two months by doing some calf raises and stretching my calves consistently, but they're starting to resurface again. This video came right in the nick of time and I'm hopeful to see how these strategies help me!
Glad to hear it! Let us know how it develops...
I’ve been struggling with shin splints since October 2018... I had them before but never as bad and I can’t seem to get rid of them for good. Great tips. From personal experience, my shin splints are now mostly gone by changing running gait. Before I didn't lift my knees high enough with each step when I run which placed great stress on my lower legs, but now that I lift them higher, probably resulting in use of different muscle group for better support, the shin splints have gone away. Besides the usual outdoor jogging, I also use a treadmill daily, set it to 12 degree inclination and do about 1-2 km walk or jog or even sprint (lift knees when jog/sprint!). The inclination walk/jog/sprint has been a fantastic workout for both the Tibialis anterior and Glute Medius, and I notice an improvement to my anterior pelvic tilt too. It's of utmost importance that everything needs to be done with the correct form! In relation to relaxation, I do stretches and one of those vibrational massage guns.
Wow I really had no clue my coach tells me I should lift my knees up so I can run better but it didn’t occur to me that it can also help my shin splits disappear would definitely have to try!
He said no ice as I was icing my shins 😳😳
Gianna Hansen ahahaha sameeee
Ice is good, stops inflammation but won't stop the root cause of the splints. Ice helps, but stretching is greater in my opinion
Hope this helps!

Heat is the best in my opinion. Increased blood flow equals faster recovery
Ice is NOT good for healing injured tissue*

Nicely said 👍 i ended up getting rid of mine changing shoes and easing into the more high impact side of running like fast sprints and stuff. Couldn’t run 3k years ago now training for 65k. Rest of the advice is solid 👌

This really helped me out alot, thank you so much! I was experiencing this pain for about 6 months due to lack of running but I am feeling way better by doing these exercises! Much appreciated :)
Great tips. From personal experience, to be shin splint free you must improve running/walking gait and find suitable pair of shoes as well. In the past I never had shin splints, but it all started after I made the mistake of purchasing a pair of ASICS GEL NIMBUS. At first I didn't know what the problem was, but turns out it was because the nimbus had too much cushion, which placed extra stress on my lower legs with every step I push off the ground. The shoes also dramatically changed my original running gait for the worse, resulting in me not having to lift my knees high enough which further increased the lower leg load. So to correct the issue to make my shin splint go away, I bought a better pair of less cushion-y runners with better shape and arc support (these days I run with Adidas Ultra Boost or Nike Zooms), and lifted my knees higher again so to use of proper muscle groups for better support. Besides the usual outdoor jogging, I also use a treadmill daily these days, set it to 12 degree inclination and do about 1-2 km walk or jog or even sprint (lift knees when jog/sprint!). The inclination walk/jog/sprint has been a fantastic workout for both the Tibialis anterior and Glute Medius, and I notice an improvement to my anterior pelvic tilt too. It was quite the long journey since it took me a while to figure out what the problem was, but in the end these corrections led me to being shin splint free. It's of utmost importance that everything needs to be done with the correct form! For relaxation, I do stretches and make use of one of those vibrational massage guns.
Can’t explain how helpful this was. Thank you!
I have been going through this for 5-6 years but after watching this video I am pretty confident that I don't have to suffer this pain for anymore. Thanks a lot.
Any luck?
@@bifflowman2000 yes yes. I got the results in a month itself. The pain got reduced quite quickly and then it was all gone. I still do a lot of stretching which helps my body relaxed and flexible. Most important thing is when you start running again then keep it short and have a gradual progress along with these stretches. Good luck!

I'm a person with a good cardo system. Been running and playing soccer for over 10 years. I never had shin splints and heard of close friends complaining about it periodically and being out for like 1-2 weeks. I wondered many times how that felt like. And then it happened to me. I went out for a run and tried shaving off a lot of time/mile to increase my speed. After about 5 days of pushing, I felt THAT pain. I tried walking instead of running on some days but even long walks made them flare back up. I tried to push myself through it but in hindsight, I definitely delayed my recovery.
Its been about a week and a half since I've run and I"M SO ANTSY TO GET BACK OUT. I've rested my legs and just recently tried a few light exercises. Praise the Lord, there is no pain but I'm still gonna wait a few more days until I actually go for a run. Your video has equipped me to recover better and slowly ease myself to run again. Aw I never get notifications on here. So as far as I can remember the shin splints went away. I did a lot of rolling of the front muscle of my shin and calf/Achilles. I think jump roping as well. The race went amazing. The first mile I was tight in that front lower leg muscle. But after I got warmed up I was just cruising. I crushed my goal of 55:00 and ended up getting just over 48 minutes. Start with exercises in this video: ruclips.net/video/6nz6kDUgirc/видео.html
The Run Experience thank you very much for your help. I will work on these exercises and hope my shin stops suffering
If you are overpronating too much, you most likely cannot stretch your way out of the pain. Maybe keep it under control, but not get rid of it. What may help, though, is to go to a orthopedic and get a customized inlay sole to straighten up your foot a bit. That can be enough to solve the problem, or at least minimize it.
I have this same problem and I went to the physical therapist and he recommended the SOLE medium running insoles and a stability running shoe ( basically a shoe that doesn’t bend in the middle). He also told me to do certain excercises that would strengthen the muscle surrounding my shin and to also stretch out the calf muscle a lot. hope this helps 🙂
Finally found it.lol I thought I was suffering alone. I used to play a lot of sports especially football(Soccer) when I was younger but stopped playing as I grew older and barely been having any exercises either, although I do walk quite often. Couple of weeks back I tried running and my shin immediately started hurting after running for like 500 metres. Prolly thought it was because of my lack of exercise and because I was new to running. And now I've started playing football again after many years (I'm 26 now) and on days I can play a full 30 40 minutes without much pain but sometimes I can't play more than 15 20 minutes cause the pain is just excruciating! And the day after is the worse, can't even walk properly or climb up and down the stairs. So I used to numb the pain with ice which I thought worked because it did numb the pain for the moment. And after a day or two rest would play football again and the same would happen. Didn't know this was actually a common injury and could lead to more problem if left unattended. I'm def gonna give a try to this exercises and hopefully it starts getting better!
Man, This is literally the same Thing That Happened to me. Tell me if you found something That helped you out. Have a nice day Brother.
Having low vitamin D deficiency caused mine! As soon as i took a prescription of high dosage vitamin D, the shin splints went away!
Hey do you mind providing an update on this? I've had trouble with my shins (particularly the left one for some reason) for about 5 years.
I had to cut back on running from 5-6 days a week to running every other day to allow enough rest for the shins to heal. But now I'm stuck on this exercise, pain, and heal cycle that never ends.
I found out a couple of weeks ago that I had vitamin D deficiency. Started taking 4k daily units immediately, but so far shins feel about the same during and after workouts. How long till you started noticing results?

When would you do these flexability / massages, Pre run? post run?
Thank you, I have long term shin splints 😭 yes I did wince at the thought of massaging, I will try some of these techniques. I struggle to stretch my calf's which is a problem.
@paulakumirayi3457
How are you now?
Got this right after my first dunk
Ohhhhh🙆🏽♀️ thank you soooooooooo much... I really thought I'd never make it back to track.
Such a detailed explanation of the cause and remedies👍🏽
Um. Ice does more than just numbs things. It reduces swelling which in some cases helps recovery time and pain.
Yes! When I heard that I was so confused. I almost clicked off of the video, however I'm glad that I didn't. He was well educated I think he just didn't fully think that through.
@@maximilianraley2457
I think he meant it as a way of assessing the pain level and location. Ice and painkillers won't let you do that precisely.
I'm trying to get into better shape for the military and I've been wanting to run at least 3 times a week. I run fine the first run day of the week but during the second day I literally get the worst shin pain afterwards and I end up having to take a week or more off and starting over. It's so frustrating man.
everything good? im trying to also for military but damn shins. im on day 3 of resting & stretching, hoping they come out stronger when i get back to it
Excellent video. Straight to the point and brimming with positivity.
I've started runing 3 years ago..but in entire years i had 6 spin slits..but i never left running..i did strength training every day of calf muscule and toe..i got rid off this problem.i can have good speed in long distance today...☺
I got that sweet shin pain after changing two out of three of my runs to asphalt course. I usually only run on dirt road, so the hard surface was too much for me. So my tip would be to make sure you are running on something consistently varying. The pain went away after I only ran on asphalt once a week.
Thank you so much for this great video and for the great tips. Your detailed explanation on shin splint is so very helpful. Thank you for giving me hope and for shifting this experience into a positive one!! I strongly recommend every runner to watch your videos and this particular one especially! Thank you!!
I am having this pain since 20 years. After seeing your vedio I am really happy... Good information
I'm a physician and a runner and a wrestler!! what i can tell you about this specific issue, which i experienced myself while i was running my 1st 10k is the issue is very simple! your bones and muscles are not that strong yet and you can either chose the easy way and increase pressure gradually and avoid it at once or you can do what i did and feel the pain. but never forget that you definitely need some recovery time depending on your workout intensity.
Thank you for this! I'm in a good form at the moment, but starting to have problems with my shins, this is a deal breaker!! I was suggested to just rest.. now i see i can do other things meanwhile to come out of it even stronger! Thank you again!
I have a bleep test next week and I really can’t afford to stop running🤦🏾♀️ I need this job
Same, how did it go
@@Colin44500 What ended up happening with you, Colin?
@@bifflowman2000 they just went by themselves and I passed.
@@Colin44500 Nice! Thanks for responding? How long did they take to go away?
@@bifflowman2000 took 3 days off running and started again and just didn’t feel pain anymore ,and stretching my calves helped.
Thank you so much for this video! Very helpful in helping me understand not only what’s causing my shin pain but also some remedies to heal quicker.
Got in the gym and started some intense training a couple months ago just so I could get better at basketball and lose some weight. Started building my legs first and would play 1-3 hours of basketball every other day. Never even thought about the pain until a kid stepped on my shin while sitting down. Needless to say it hurt like he'll. Now I'm just trying everything to stop it.
me: going for a run
legs: tf do you think your going
shins: time to kick in
ankles: don’t forget about me
1. Calf raises
2. Squats
3. Foam rolling
4. Massage shins
5. Stretch
6. Warmup
Thank you!
I did not know i have a split pain until I search for the symptom on Tube which brings me here.
Thank you, Sir, it really helps soothing my pain..appriciate it...
Been seriously running for several months now and starting to experience pain in my right shin area. These tips have helped me out a lot. Ty
This whole time I thought I was building muscle it was actually shin splits. I run a long distance 5 days a week should I hold until the bumps on my shin disappear?
This was me too💀
My shins pained and i thought i was building muscle , so i overworked them , how did you heal yours?
@@yourneighbourhoodclownwith8490 Mines are still there. I ended up buying compression socks which helps with the pain though.
@@illdrumatik391 did they ever go away? Dealing with this issue myself
@@aetheriusfoxx443 I still feel the bumps m doctor didn’t help mush basically said the said thing wear compression socks, minimize jogging or find alternative work out 😢
My shins hurt so bad in the first few seconds of running. I hope this helps!!
Did it help? And if so, how quick?
In extreme pain right now. I am beginner runner and I kept ignoring my shin splint pain. Today I just ran through the pain. Now I am really suffering. Had no idea how much they hurt, I can barley walk
This channel rocks and this video is particularly helpful. Thanks!
I have a shin splints and so as my training buddy in running now hes suffering he really need to recover hes race is next month and this should help him a lot so i send the link of this vid and also this would also help me get rid of my shin splint too..
Jay Cole good luck!
Thank you for these tips! One question if you don’t mind: regarding the exercise where you bring a towel inwards with your toes, how do you count reps? Each time you bring the towel all the way in counts as a rep?
Thank you
yes every time you "scrunch" a towel that would count as a rep!
This is an amazingly informative video. Thank you! You do a great job of explaining the problem, the procedures, and why all of it matters.
Glad it was helpful! 🙌🏼
Ok for the people who are still active in the comments and play football/soccer: Last month my shin splints came out of nowhere (both legs) and when I was looking at my cleats they didn’t had a stable heel and soleplate. The only thing I did to let my shin splints disappear was buying new, good and stable cleats so the muscles in my feet and shin didn’t have to work so hard to get in a stable position. My advise for any fooballer/soccerplayer is: Buy cleats who are stable enough!!! After one week my shinds felt a lot better
I've been training for triathlon since october as well as playing sometimes 2 football matches a week, i havent changed anything but ive suddenly got really bad shin splints, not really sure how? going to try this
As a beginner, I went pretty hard. Had no idea that this was a thing for runners. I could go so so much longer if it didn't burn so bad. Tried the kt tape. Not much of a difference. Going to try the regular athletic tape today. Thanks for the video!
I have really bad shin splints, but a marathon in a few days. Gonna tape them and hope for the best
