@Horus137 hey man! A few days ago I went on a brisk. 5 minute run for about half a mile and I didn't feel anything so I was feeling pretty positive. However, I did a second run at about the same slow pace and I started to feel a bit of discomfort on my shin towards my ankle. Previously the shin splints were so bad I actually ended up getting x-rays to make sure it wasn't a stress fracture as my legs would visibly shake after a run. So unfortunately my recover isn't quite there yet but I'm hoping in 2 or 3 weeks it'll be fully healed. It's progress but unfortunately it's not quite 100%

I have suffered with shin splints in the past. I bear the scars from them in the form of bumpy shin bones. Just returned to running 5 months ago after a considerable break. Have eased back in slowly & thankfully after completing my first 10k in 5yrs no shin pain. I can remember having to hobble home though 😢
Thank you so so so so much, experiencing shin splint because I just started badminton last week which has a lot of running and jumping. I wasn't able to understand why I was experiencing this pain and what to do about it. I didn't even know that It is called shin splint. It feels extremely good to finally find the right information.
Thank you so much, I’m 73 years old and am experiencing shin splints for the first time. I walk around 5km a day, but I think it’s my foot biomechanics that might be the culprit as I’ve had a big toe fusion 5 years ago. This now prevents me from standing on my toes so I need to find alternative ways of strengthening. I’m so pleased I found your generous information.

Thank you for this! It’s very informative and clear to follow. I am joining the U.S. Air Force. Gotta do lots of running and the pain is killing me. I gotta fix it before March!
Thank you for keeping the instructions simple and easy to follow! Many times I see anywhere from 5-10 different exercises that need to be done daily, which can be tricky to fit all the time -- and missing days is discouraging. I will certainly be following this plan and let you know how it goes for me! Wish me luck!

@@PrecisionWellbeing im not in recovery, but the best way to know how to avoid something is to know how it works. Just was watching for knowledge and this was great for being informative!
Calcium supplements worked for me. Also know of others whom it's worked for. Surprisingly the healing was very fast within a week or two of supplementation.
i'm not a runner, but i did a 5 k about two weeks ago now, i did so much better than when i did the same 5 k three years ago (because i've been on a health journey) I got a lot of confidence from that run and started using the treadmill at my small gym. I noticed a pain in my right shin much more after i ran at the gym, today i ran on it a little again, it hurt like a b*tch, but i'm happy i'm watching this video, because now i'm icing my leg and will stop running till it heals. What I thought was even more crazy, was a few days ago i got the insane urge to buy a bike, and i also got a huge tub meant for horses and cows to drink from (im going to use it for ice baths or just to soak outside.) Anyway, i still really wanted that bike and just got it today before i watched this video, I was so amazed when you said "pick up something else like cycling" My jaw literally dropped, the universe is just so awesome 😂❤ (P.S my 5 k time was 36:37, keep in mind the last time i did one was three/four years ago and i didn't even finish that one because i got lost!😂)
Excellent coverage. Nice to know what is happening. mine seems to be the top third of the inside of the leg--so makes me wonder. Gets better at end of day because I'm moving around a lot.
3 years ago shin splints were my worst nightmare seriously but i started doing calf shin strengthning and took me 6 months to be back to normal with exercises like calf raises seated and standing with slow eccentrics and shin rotations with internal and external variations with the help of a loop band
This was the video i needed back in August when i got my shin splint. I’m only starting to run again now even though i watched several videos to no avail back then
Started running about 2-3 monhs ago, made enough progress to now do 5k+5k+10k runs every week. The 10k run sometimes ends up with light shin splints, not too painful, a 1/10 pain I would say. What seems to help is massaging the area in the hours/days after the run and the calf exercise that you mentioned in your video. I will stop increasing running distances and keep my current routine until I feel more comfortable with my 10k runs.
This is an EXCELLENT video! THANK YOU for the thorough explanation & for providing a DIY plan to treat. I'm at stage 1; fingers crossed things will get better soon! 🤞🏾THANKS AGAIN!
I would also like to add that shin splints can be caused by having any form of nerve damage. Have extensive nerve damage throughout my left leg and hip so I'm prone to shin splints all the time. Where as in my right I have never had it
Thanks for sharing your personal story. I have hyper-kyphosis and it's easy for me to get shin splints just from walking too much because of all the muscle imbalances. I appreciate your comment that there's no one right answer to etiology and that you want to look at what's causing the issue such as weak glutes or dropped arch.
Suffering from shin splints since mid December 2023, I increased my running from 10-15km per month, to 100km per month, was also getting decent results, but after 2 months I felt some "burning" in the lateral shin area, since then I barely run... Now I am doing cycling, but would really like to return to running too... So will start with this 3 phase program and will let you know how did it go. Thank you!
Just came accross this video. Well explained. Been having them 2 months now. Hopefully this will work. I feel so useless and wantvto get back to my normal self

Pretty cool! I started running a couple of months ago twice per week and about 2 miles per run. At some point I started feeling some discomforts but not knowing what I was I kept running. Then, the last time I went running I felt this stinging pain in my left tibia and calf muscle when I got back home. I believe its shin splints so I stopped running altogether. The first few days I only rested my legs. Now, I'm doing strengthening exercises like the ones in the video and using foot rollers/balls to loosen up my feet. Walking doesn't bother me whatsoever. Also, I believe my toes are slightly deformed due to wearing shoes for too long during the day. I'm correcting all these issues hoping I can get back to running in 3-4 weeks (October) since my last run. Ultimately, if I don't heal I'll take a break until spring next year. It sucks having to take a long break from running but I'd rather take the time to heal than to have permanent damage.
Great video. I've had recurring problems with shin splints since I was a kid, up till now largely due to not understanding the causes and how to treat it. It put me off running most of my life because it shattered my confidence, I thought it just wasn't for me. I wish they taught this stuff in school gym class - there is zero instruction on running form and leg strength training. I started running again recently and was overly excited, so increased my pace faster than my body was ready for, so I'm back to square one again. It's so frustrating but as you say, better to focus on increasing strength rather than keep running - for now. Thanks for the advice...
I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles. Have you tried any of the exercises yet? Please do let me know which are most helpful. Wishing you a speedy recovery from the PWG family Best wishes, Ashley.
Great video Ashley. Last week my 1000 mile run through the UK ended because of shin splints. I went and had a X ray and then a MRI done to determine if there was any stress fracture. Nothing. I am now 10 days on since the injury occurred and are feeling really good. Zero pain, have done some of the last stretches you referred too and no pain. I am doing a 1400 mile run in 6 months time, so want to make sure my recovery is thorough. My big concern is, how long will it before before I can start jogging again and then training given my current prognosis?
I get them when i walk fast which i do often. But when i was born i had leg metal leg brace since my legs curved more than normal because my mom belly space was too small
Most comprehensive video I've found about this and how to address it. Thank you very much for sharing this openly! I've increased my frequency to daily runs and it has resulted in the pain described in the video. What surprised me is that after 1 - 1.5 km the pain has disappeared for the rest of the run. The pain itself wasn't that unbearable, but of course, noticeable. What I did to address it is that I've stopped for a 5 days, massaged my legs and used Voltaren (local inflammation decreasing gel) on the area. I've done a test run yesterday. The pain has decreased a lot and after a few hundred meters, I had no issues. Currently planning to do these exercises for the rest of the week, then give another try for a test run. I'll also adopt these exercises to my warm up routine for the future.
I have Shin Splints. In my case it happens when too much too soon. I was a sprinter. I ran without any issues. I then become lazy and got some fats and weights. Now when I am trying to be fit, my shin bone is chilling and in no mood for working. So take care of it like your girlfriend. You have to know when you are overpushing Or overtraining. U can't date a girl and marry her on that very moment. You have to be patient. And as for the cure of this I can say that a long rest and slow increase in intensity has worked for me. I know you've got it. Oh and by the way you can convince your Shin sooner and easier than that girl of yours. Trust me.
Never done running but I do a lot of walking and I dance for a hobby. Recently I developed what I think to be shin splints and it's been agonising torture. I like to walk the 1.5 miles into work and then home again but since about a month ago I've been having to stop at least 4 or 5 times on route because the pain is too much. It starts as a burning down the fonrt of my leg and quickly intensifies until it feels like my leg is just made from searing acid. Anyway, watched this video iced my leg for 20 minutes every couple of hours (as per NHS advice for shin splints) and now when at home I do heel walking to get around the house. The results have been pretty much overnight. It's still painful but I now only need to stop 2 or 3 times instead of the 4+ before and the pain is dulled from an 8 down to 4 maybe 5.
Excellent explanation and ways to correct the issue to get back to activity. My partner is going take time with this approach to get back to running. I feel he's doing to much and should alternate walk/run days with walking only or cycling running again but and some exercise to strengthen up the weak links. Some glute exercises would be heloful too. He has just started running again as he is an avid cyclist who doesn't walk too much. He did have this issue years ago. I will encourage him to exercise some as my clients feel the positive effects of even simple exercise. Thx. 😊
I have very similar pain in both of my legs and it’s gotten to the point where I can walk for 20 minutes max. Taken a massive affect on my mental health and currently trying to pinpoint what’s exactly going on with me. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for this wonderful visual instruction - it was very clear. I had revision knee surgery 9 months ago, which was very successful and now I am hiking and swimming like normal. However this shin pain is waking me at night and occurs spontaneously during the day. My anti-inflammatories (voltaren) sometimes reduce the pain but not always. I have started using fins when swimming which could be aggravating the pain. What are your thoughts?
I am recovering from a circular fracture of my right femur. Surgery, rod placement and unable to put weight on that leg for 6 weeks. Now I am walking with a walker as. much as I can but the pain I feel is the front of my shin. I did suffer a bad bruise there from a hockey puck slap shot 35 yrs ago but why now does it hurt so much or could it be a shin splint? You are a terrific teacher!!

From my experience, i play football 5v5 every 2-3 days and i have pain in the inside of my bone in both legs, i try to relax the leg for a month and a half and it went completely away. Then i play some more matches which was fine at the begginning and then it came back again. My doc says is the way i run that causes the stress in the specific area. I run more on my fingers thats why.
this is the best Shin Splints video on RUclips; thank you. my pain-point is less-typically located higher-up my shin - about 1/3 of the way down from my knee; at the intersection line of the top and middle third of my shin - so does this mean the cause for me is less my Soleus muscle and more something else? is the Soleus stretch still what i should be focusing on?
I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. Have you tried any of the exercises yet? Please do let me know which are most helpful. Wishing you a speedy recovery from the PWG family Best wishes, Ashley.
Yeah. I was stupid, starting getting fit, going gym going for jogs. Climbed Snowden with some pals. Next day didnt feel too bad, just a little pain, thought it was just muscular and went to go for a light jog. Half way through both legs were in agony. I tried to push through but went home. Every time I jog now I get pain and been the same for around a year and 2 months. Cant get rid of them.
My shins hurt terribly when driving in heavy stop-go traffic (brake, clutch and gas pedals). To the point I fret that I might crash into a car ahead with a sudden uncontrollable press of the gas pedal. The pain goes after a couple days rest. Is this a shin splint problem? Which muscle groups should I strengthen. Thanks a ton for explaining the muscles visibly on a model.
Excellent video. Is there anything to do to target the flexor digitorum longus or tibilias posterior in particular? So doing isometrics targeting those help? Or stretching them too?
Nice video for when the pain is on the inside. What about when the pain is on the front and outside of the leg (Around the tibialis anterior and peroneus longus)? It seems like something reasonably similar where inflammation needs to be addressed first, then gentle massage, increasing in intensity. After that I would focus on lifting the against resistance (eg, elastic band) and also lifting the foot outwards as in pulling the ball of the foot towards the outside of the knee. So it seems like the video addresses the more common version of shin splints, but I am not sure it addresses the variations which can appear. Good video though.
Hey so, I've mostly played football in fields with grass, or syntethic, but it was all good, but last three weeks i played in cement fields, and this past saturday, even though i was playing in the grass one, i felt like an aching pain to my shins and i couldn't even run, every step was hurting, if i touched my shins it felt like if i had got a hit from someone playing, but that wasn't clearly the case. To resume, thanks a lot for the video and for the explanation! Been doing the stretching part and it seems to cool off the pain. Again, thanks a lot. 🇦🇷

Have eased back in slowly & thankfully after completing my first 10k in 5yrs no shin pain. I can remember having to hobble home though 😢
Love the elastic metaphor around 8.10! Very helpful in understanding why stretching doesn't always help.
Thank you. I am glad to hear that the video has been insightful. Please let me know how it goes with the stretches. Best wishes, Ashley.
Thank you so so so so much, experiencing shin splint because I just started badminton last week which has a lot of running and jumping. I wasn't able to understand why I was experiencing this pain and what to do about it. I didn't even know that It is called shin splint. It feels extremely good to finally find the right information.
You are welcome. Glad to hear that the video has been helpful. Please let me know how it goes with the exercises. Best wishes, Ashley.
You're most welcome. I'm glad the video shed light on your shin splits. Have you tried any of the stretches yet? Please keep me posted on your progress. Best wishes, Ashley.
Thank you for this! It’s very informative and clear to follow. I am joining the U.S. Air Force. Gotta do lots of running and the pain is killing me. I gotta fix it before March!
We’re you able to fix it and are you doing well in boot camp?
Did your shin splints go away
Same im trying to go into the army 💯
Thank you for keeping the instructions simple and easy to follow! Many times I see anywhere from 5-10 different exercises that need to be done daily, which can be tricky to fit all the time -- and missing days is discouraging.
I will certainly be following this plan and let you know how it goes for me! Wish me luck!
You are most welcome. I am happy to hear that you found the video helpful. Wishing you all the luck and looking forward to hearing positive feedback. Best wishes, Ashley.
Hey, did it work? I'm experiencing the same
You're incredibly smart and straight forward, thank you
Thank you so much. I do hope that the video is helpful towards your recovery. Best wishes, Ashley.
@@PrecisionWellbeing im not in recovery, but the best way to know how to avoid something is to know how it works. Just was watching for knowledge and this was great for being informative!
Thanks!
Thank you for your support! I hope the video helped you. Best wishes, Ashley
Calcium supplements worked for me. Also know of others whom it's worked for.
Surprisingly the healing was very fast within a week or two of supplementation.
Veryinteresting, and that makes sense too. Though I think you could supplement yourself with proper diet (yogurts, cheese...)
What if a person is lactose intolerant? I am and have pain in my left leg bone it feels like not the muscles
i'm not a runner, but i did a 5 k about two weeks ago now, i did so much better than when i did the same 5 k three years ago (because i've been on a health journey)
I got a lot of confidence from that run and started using the treadmill at my small gym.
I noticed a pain in my right shin much more after i ran at the gym, today i ran on it a little again, it hurt like a b*tch, but i'm happy i'm watching this video, because now i'm icing my leg and will stop running till it heals.
What I thought was even more crazy, was a few days ago i got the insane urge to buy a bike, and i also got a huge tub meant for horses and cows to drink from (im going to use it for ice baths or just to soak outside.)
Anyway, i still really wanted that bike and just got it today before i watched this video, I was so amazed when you said "pick up something else like cycling"
My jaw literally dropped, the universe is just so awesome 😂❤
(P.S my 5 k time was 36:37, keep in mind the last time i did one was three/four years ago and i didn't even finish that one because i got lost!😂)
How's your progress?
Excellent coverage. Nice to know what is happening.
mine seems to be the top third of the inside of the leg--so makes me wonder. Gets better at end of day because I'm moving around a lot.
Clear instructions thanks just what i need. Going to try this
3 years ago shin splints were my worst nightmare seriously but i started doing calf shin strengthning and took me 6 months to be back to normal with exercises like calf raises seated and standing with slow eccentrics and shin rotations with internal and external variations with the help of a loop band
amazingly helpful to see the stretches in action - i'm so grateful. wow, i've never stretched my calves in this way really. very good
You're so welcome! I am happy to hear that the stretches have been helpful. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes, Ashley.
Hope you all recover❤❤❤
This was the video i needed back in August when i got my shin splint. I’m only starting to run again now even though i watched several videos to no avail back then
Very useful information! Thank you so much 🙏🏼
Started running about 2-3 monhs ago, made enough progress to now do 5k+5k+10k runs every week.
Is it same for anterior shin pain? My pain is constant 24/7
Yeahhh
Things like biking and swimming have helped me lessen the pain and get the blood flowing
This is an EXCELLENT video! THANK YOU for the thorough explanation & for providing a DIY plan to treat. I'm at stage 1; fingers crossed things will get better soon! 🤞🏾THANKS AGAIN!
Glad it was helpful! Stay consistent with the workouts and they will help. Best Wishes, Ashley
Thankyou for creating such an informative and helpful video. Best one I found on shin splints. Really do appreciate it greatly!
You're most welcome! I'm glad you found the video insightful. Best wishes, Ashley.
Thank you!
All the best with the program. Let me know how they go. Best Wishes, Ashley
Thank you for an AMAZING clear and well described video! Finally someone who explains things! Thanks again!!!

Had this problem for about 8 years. If I even do a 10 minute run once a week I will start getting the pain again after not too long.
Yea it's horrible! But... are you doing anything to overcome this? Foam rolling? Stretching? Strengthening? Best wishes, Ashley
clear and easy to understand, thank you

best video about shin splints, thank you very much..
Thank you. Glad you liked it. Best wishes, Ashley.
This helped my partner who has been doing 200kg hip thrusts for 8 months
Thank you❤ i will do the phase 1 now.
All the best with the stretches, I hope they help. Best Wishes, Ashley
Tried a lot of things to heal mine but I'm going to start this now properly, stick to it and hopefully see the fruit in a few months time
Glad the video was informative. I hope you're able to stick to the exercises and they help you relieve the pain. Best Wishes, Ashley
@@PrecisionWellbeing Thanks very much! And thanks for the information :D
How did you get on with your run? Did your shin heal in time? I have an event in 5 months
Great video, i got shin pain while playing cricket.
Thank you so much for the VDO. I will practice it.❤

Now it really works almost 90% back, I can run and more confident, thanks 🙏 for your tips how to fix it.🏃♂️😍💕
I get them when i walk fast which i do often.
Great video! Really helpful, thank you
You are most welcome. Glad to hear that you found the video helpful. Best wishes, Ashley.
Wow. Mind blowing. Thank you so much.

Trust me.
Mines are from working too much standing and I danced way too much for years
Omg this sucks
So sorry to hear that Fatima. Have you tried any of the exercises? Please keep my posted on you progress. Best wishes, Ashley.
Yes I was a massage therapist so I get it but it’s just so sore I have Tendinitis and arthritis also
Thank you so much.
been suffering from shin splints for over a year now really hope this works
Hi, Sorry to hear about your pain. Please let me know how it goes with the exercises. Best wishes, Ashley.
Thank you for the information.. who should i be showing this to like who is a trained professional? A sports physio?
Excellent explanation and ways to correct the issue to get back to activity. My partner is going take time with this approach to get back to running. I feel he's doing to much and should alternate walk/run days with walking only or cycling running again but and some exercise to strengthen up the weak links. Some glute exercises would be heloful too. He has just started running again as he is an avid cyclist who doesn't walk too much. He did have this issue years ago. I will encourage him to exercise some as my clients feel the positive effects of even simple exercise. Thx. 😊
You're welcome. I hope it helped. Best wishes, Ashley.
I have very similar pain in both of my legs and it’s gotten to the point where I can walk for 20 minutes max. Taken a massive affect on my mental health and currently trying to pinpoint what’s exactly going on with me. Thanks for the advice!
I am very sorry to hear that. Did the video help? And have you tried any of the exercises? Please let me know how it goes. Looking forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Ashley.
Wow! How's the progress?
I am recovering from a circular fracture of my right femur. Surgery, rod placement and unable to put weight on that leg for 6 weeks. Now I am walking with a walker as. much as I can but the pain I feel is the front of my shin. I did suffer a bad bruise there from a hockey puck slap shot 35 yrs ago but why now does it hurt so much or could it be a shin splint? You are a terrific teacher!!
Exact video needed....A big thanks from India..
I'm so happy to hear that! I hope it helped. Best wishes, Ashley.
I have been noticing it since few years now after i treated an STI, it do affect my body and makes my body hot and veiny...i don't know what to do 😢😢
I’m 62 female, started working a job on hard concrete floor since September 2023. I wear orthotics and good shoes. I have a shin splint on my right outer lower leg. Any 💡 ideas. I do bike 3 days a week
I am sitting on my floor and experiencing the pain I couldn't understand as I was doing well running previously..
Such a great explanation and a clean video even without introducing your self is unbelievable.

How do you feel now?
@@ahmedyounis2115 i relaxed my foot for 2 weeks and feels fine, but i know as soon as i start playing again im gonn feel it.

this is the best Shin Splints video on RUclips; thank you. my pain-point is less-typically located higher-up my shin - about 1/3 of the way down from my knee; at the intersection line of the top and middle third of my shin - so does this mean the cause for me is less my Soleus muscle and more something else? is the Soleus stretch still what i should be focusing on?
My pain is on the front muscle of the shin on both legs when walking any distance.
Its help me a lot, thank doc.

Thank you for your advice,
Shin pain it’s could be caused pain The outer side of the ankle and underneath?
Regards
Excellent video. Is there anything to do to target the flexor digitorum longus or tibilias posterior in particular? So doing isometrics targeting those help? Or stretching them too?
Can you still run while practicing all the advice you have given?
Nice video for when the pain is on the inside. What about when the pain is on the front and outside of the leg (Around the tibialis anterior and peroneus longus)? It seems like something reasonably similar where inflammation needs to be addressed first, then gentle massage, increasing in intensity. After that I would focus on lifting the against resistance (eg, elastic band) and also lifting the foot outwards as in pulling the ball of the foot towards the outside of the knee.
So it seems like the video addresses the more common version of shin splints, but I am not sure it addresses the variations which can appear. Good video though.
Same pain here mine feels like it's the bone not any of the muscles
Same I also feel like this is a bone pain
Hey so, I've mostly played football in fields with grass, or syntethic, but it was all good, but last three weeks i played in cement fields, and this past saturday, even though i was playing in the grass one, i felt like an aching pain to my shins and i couldn't even run, every step was hurting, if i touched my shins it felt like if i had got a hit from someone playing, but that wasn't clearly the case. To resume, thanks a lot for the video and for the explanation! Been doing the stretching part and it seems to cool off the pain. Again, thanks a lot. 🇦🇷
What of the pain is on outside of the shin ?
Thanks.. good information

thanks doc! ❤
but if i got my shin splint because running, can i lower my activity to just walking?

I believe my pain started when I bought two pair of new running shoes. I already recycled my old shoes so now I must do battle with the shoe store.
