If you want to talk shop about cameras, RUclips, career development… send me an email (listed in description) to set up a consultation call. $125/hr to deep dive your personal situation.
I don’t have all the answers and cannot guarantee work but I can share what has worked for me and my peers, what to avoid and the small steps I take daily.
Really enjoyed this video and the transparency!
The transparency is all I have!! I like this content style bc I can rant about things that I want to do a deep dive on rather than tighten it up into a 2 minute segment in a vlog. I think I’ll do more of them!
You did work for that money. All the effort you have put into making these videos is that work. I enjoy watching all of them.
Glad to have you on board 🏴☠️
Love to hear this bro! you are encouraging me to start one! I love the idea of having a channel around trying new things and documenting the journey!
My biggest advice is to keep it authentic. That’s when I’m most confident, least cringey and can feel comfortable. This walk and talk style actually felt really fun. I’m going to continue it.
LOVE the transparency!
It seems the more I share, the more is returned.
Really liked this longer style of video, walking and talking. Keep it up!
Thanks. Will do!
Really enjoy your transparency and a raw look into bts of your shoots you were one of the very few that began this so it’s cool seeing your journey!
Yeah it’s cool to see this little movement happening.
I love your energy David!
I’ve never been told that 🤣 I have such low energy, usually it’s a buzz kill haha
Love this type of content
Thanks. I enjoyed it too. I think I’ll make more.
As you mentioned 'sharing not preaching' is so key to keeping my attention. I've watched my fair share of youtube and the only channels that keep me coming back are those that are there to share knowledge but not tell me what to do. I've seen too many people move from an enthusiastic professional to a sales person telling me what to do that it's a little disheartening.
Yup I’m not a fan of that either. It’s like they forgot why they got an audience in the first place.
Totally agree RUclips at least for filmmakers is turning into a place for documentation.
And I like that it encourages you to still make projects. Not just sit in a RUclips studio.
@@davidmorefield Great point. Encourages people to go out and live!
Ja i like it but i still watch how to videos. The documentation style is more for Entertainment but i still want to learn
@@castielvargastv7931you learn from documentation too cause it gives some in the field action and sometimes the steps , adjustments, troubleshooting each takes before production and lessons learned during production
@@davidmorefield this is how it should be - they should reward you for sharing real world work / experiences etc instead of more manufactured experiences and reviewers that just regurgitate other youtuber's videos and press releases from brands they're reviewing
Love the longer videos + congrats on the success so far
Thanks! I think I’ll do more. I like how fast they are to put out. Plus it gets me outside haha
I opted to purchase another AOD Module through your link as well instead of the AOD Alumni Discount and possibly will do the same with the last module I dont have yet next launch. So easy to support through something like that!
Thank you for that! I love that YT can be a mutually beneficial connection.
Big fan of you and your channel. Hopefully only bigger and better things for you.
That’s the goal! Thanks man
Love this perspective 👌🏼
Thanks dude. I’m looking forward to more long form content like this.
Bro congratulations! You’ve a great spirit and it paid off. Only up from here
Thanks! Looking forward to more progress!
Nice! I was on the fence about The Art of Documentary and I was a recent subscriber of yours and when they opened up and when you talked about it, I signed up with your code. Congrats on the payout, well deserved. I completely missed the SF meetup you had (subscribed as you posted the video).
If you're comfortable teaching, go for it. I prefer to learn versus teach in terms of digital products. Maybe something low risk like LUTS or mattes would be something I'd do. I'd love to prototype some things on a 3D printer for physical projects since there are a few items, like Caleb, I need.
Unfortunately, the multiple sources of income is the new path for the video production industry--you are the product, which for introverts can be distressing but gets you out your comfort zone. I'm looking forward to your progression!
I am an introvert as well and I think it actually translates really well to RUclips bc it’s just me and the camera. Much more extroverted when I hold a filmmaker meetup and there are 30 strangers wanting to have a convo.
It feels much more chill when I’m just talking to my phone haha. But I like both!
“Sharing not preaching” is wise advice for creators.
No one wants to be preached at, including me.
Love the transparency brother. Getting into RUclips hasn’t been about the money for me yet. Just about staying visible and building community with likeminded people. Especially since most of the jobs I’m on aren’t my projects. I should investigate diversification in the streams with affiliates.
Finding the style of video I like AND the algorithm likes has been difficult. Maybe I’ll try more casual like this next!
Keep it up brother.
Man I really enjoyed this setup and it didn’t require the whole podcast gear/setup/time that long form usually has. Just a rant straight to camera, edited in CapCut.
I do think there is something to heading towards the thing you like and the money will follow.
Interested to hear which content style you experiment with!
Thanks for sharing David, I enjoy watching your videos. It's encouraging me to start vlogging my production work. It's hard to loosen up and put out content that isn't perfect and polished - but as I'm learning vlogs aren't a reflection of the quality of work I produce. They are about the journey. Keep it up!
Hey I just found your channel last night and left a comment.
Yes, totally agree. It’s not about the gear, the quality… that’s for the regular work. And like Mike mentioned to you in his vlog, it’s even easier to edit on your phone. I want it to be fun, not a burden.
It’s actually really enjoyable to be authentic and use it as a diary of sorts
@@davidmorefield thanks! I have a backlog of a few more vlogs I shot on my 360 cam, but I shot a new one on my phone this weekend. Gonna get transitioned over 😂
Congrats Daivd Keep killing it bro!
Thanks man. Btw I really like your last video about the Komodo. Really insightful.
@@davidmorefield thanks man! Making an effort to make a lot more content
Type of video i needed today!
That’s awesome to hear. I took a big risk with this different type of content style but so far the feedback is really good.
@@davidmorefield bro just keep going you’re doing great! You are inspiring me beyond my studio i wanna get out and do free lance work to expand my portfolio and business
And if you are ever in the bay area again and need a podcast studio to record hit us up! Bay Area podcast studio we specialize in video podcast production whatever you need is on the house we only gonna ask for a shout out lol
Great video dude. One of my favorites you’ve made so far. Funny you got inspired from the cranky cameraman, I just recently found his channel! Keep cooking 👍
I’m leaning into it. It was so much easier to communicate what was in my head. Much easier than in my vlogs… and those already are extremely low production. 😁 But yeah I like this style and I think it’ll catch on. I’ve been looking for a new experimentation and this costs me nothing.
Crank master is the real deal. Freelance lifer.
Really appreciate your videos, honestly this is inspiring me to make some videos!
Love to hear that. Send me the link when you do!
Digging the podcast idea, that can also add another stream of revenue to what you already have been getting with AdSense and affiliate payouts. A silly idea for a title that is a play on your name: More Depth of Field, or just Depth of Morefield 😊 But seriously, I’ve seen a lot of people turn their Vlogs or audio from their videos into a podcast and just upload it on those podcast platforms, you could try doing that before getting down into something more structured and traditional for a podcast. Or you could even turn your meet ups into an opportunity for a Podcast style discussion or panel for folks there, possibly even the ones that help you set up the meet up in other cities. I’m down to give this a try and either Texas or NYC. Just let me know!
I like the idea of double dipping on the meetup somehow.
And I think instead of a full fledged podcast, I’ll do more of these walk and talks bc they are just so easy and fast to get out. It will help with my Average View Duration which RUclips will reward me for as well
I purchased all 5 Modules of AOD and used your link! Greatly appreciated the 10% and glad to hear it helped you out too.
Wow. You a real one.
You're crushing it, dude. Keep it up.
Thanks man!
Bro just found out about influencing 💀
It seemed way out of reach before. But now the checks are coming in. Money is actually depositing. It’s tangible now. Definitely leaning in that direction.
Great info. I've come to realize many of the same things, though unfortunately (?) it was well AFTER I had already created a youtube channel with 100k+ subscribers. I had literally spent ALL my time/resources just chasing after that subscriber count, and then all of a sudden I had exceeded it and... nothing really changed. I still didn't have a proper income. I was definitely making money off sponsors, but the pay wasn't nearly good enough to become a sustainable business model. That's when I had to completely re-evaluate my approach and I realized I didn't have any kind of product to sell to people, so I was making pennies on the dollar advertising someone else's product. I'm working to correct that now, but it's a huge effort to completely restructure how I approach the channel and I really wish I had known all this when I was just starting out. It's great to see you putting yourself out there and sharing all this with your audience! It will help so many people, as well as yourself. 🤙🤙
Thanks bro. Wow, what an achievement to grow a channel that big. Yes! Pennies on the dollar is a perfect way to put it. I see your last video on this channel was 2 years ago. Are you planning on adding to this one or a different channel?
@@davidmorefield Thanks! Definitely proud of what we've accomplished, especially since it started out as just a passion project. Now we just gotta put in the work to turn it into a proper business so we can keep doing it haha (we decided to make online injury rehab courses). The channel is called "Hooper's Beta" if you're interested. My role is sort of the classic the jack-of-all trades "showrunner" (co-founder, manager, videographer, editor, co-writer, etc. lol).
Bro, you’re an influencer!!!! And a good one. Be proud of yourself! “Make Influencers Great Again!”
I’ll release a Subaru affiliate code soon
David it's Brandon. I watched the whole video. Great insite and I'm excited to hear it's paying off. Are you tagging the people you mentioned in your video? Maybe a colab with someone with 100k followers might help you grow even more. I think the real-estate idea is great!!
Actually tagging is a good idea. I’ll do that!
Hey David, smart video. RUclips is expecting to triple revenue in the next three years. Funny, I've been watching Michael Bordenero for last year. I call him "Mr Gloom ", but great and engaging content. Keep on your path. You're discovering new opportunities. 👍
Haha I don’t see his content as negative but you’re the second person who’s shared that perspective.
Thanks man. Might as well have a personal brand I can grow along side my career.
Orlando!! Full Sail 2023 graduate here! Thanks for sharing what most won't (your actually $$$$)
Happy to do so, it helps all of us have context in n what we should be charging, earning, etc.
David, would you mind giving me a link to that sling bag you're wearing 😁
I wish I could! When I held my filmmaker meetup in Atlanta, a new buddy gave it to me as a gift. But I can say it’s REI. That’s all I know.
Have a meet up in Baltimore!
I’ve heard a few people mention that area! I could see that happening
Really enjoyed this format! 👌🏽Your channel is already doing well but I feel this style could help you reach a wider audience (content creators & other creatives) rather than just other corporate videographers. Maybe try a mixture of this along with BTS videos?
Yes! I really enjoyed it and I also think it could help capture a wider audience. I’m going to keep doing it. I have a few more ideas already.
you mentioned that u live in Florida , what do you think of Dallas, houston or Austin? do you get a lot of work or potential work there ? which of the 3 cities in Texas do you feel is better for corporate work?
I like Dallas! That’s where I held my meetup. I see lots of work happening there. Can’t speak for the other two cities.
Hello there. I too live in Central Florida. Lake nona area. I would sign up for a class to learn how to film. Right now I just use my iPhone. Beginner YT channel since October last year!
Your whole channel is with your phone? That’s awesome!
@@davidmorefield Yes I want to buy an FX3 and learn how to use it.
@@CJ-Adventures if you are upgrading, I recommend the fx30 instead. Almost just as versatile at half the cost.
We talked about this when you were in Atlanta. If you make THEM $100,000 you can make YOURSELF $100,000 as well
Totally agree. Just collecting data and setting up the best approach.
I am notorious for spending money the moment I get it. I wish I had just put aside chunks for down the road... But I am finally listening to the people that were attempting to convince me to put it aside so I'd say do the same. Invest it for retirement.
Currently my retirement is my Roth IRA which I max out every year.
Tampa, my friend. It's close to you, but a different market than Orlando. I could also reach out to the filmmaking groups in Tampa I'm a part of. Hit me up. Would love to work with you.
Next time I have a gig there, let’s meet up. Hit me up on ig and we can connect. instagram.com/morefieldvisuals?igsh=djI5eTRtazF6bWMz
The closer you are to the client, the more money you'll make. It's a universal principle no matter the industry haha. 😆
Wow. Thank you for writing it so simply. I’m going to remember that!
Monetize your life!
I’d actually love to have a conversation with you about that! You made massive leaps recently.
Mille - pronounced more like Meal, not Milly 😂
@@ALonesomeStreet sure
WELL as you know, there are sooooo many more viewers compared to how many subscribers there are on your channel.
That’s true!
Many people realize what you are talking about in this video...but then they become nothing more than a salesman with fake authenticity. See all the Panasonic s9 videos from the RUclipsrs going to Japan? I know a few and they said the camera is not really that great and yet in their videos to the public they say it's a "game changer". Don't be that guy.
That’s the point I’m getting at. Once the audience sniffs the distrust, you lose what you’ve worked so hard for.
It’s pretty difficult to hear you sometimes, especially when there’s traffic around.
I can throw a mic on. Thanks for the feedback.
Ive heard mukbangs bring alot of view 👀
Let me check my fridge.
@@davidmorefield 🤣
I'd like to see some conversations you have with other youtubers, what they are trying, what they're into... and not necessarily in the same industry, as you can learn a lot and find other routes when you step back from your own world / industry view and see / compare what others are doing in other industries - just like you have with @MichaelBordenaro
I really enjoyed that video - it's good to mix it up n sprinkle this one in with the crankycameraman style videos, or the half cranky / half this style you do too.
I would like those types of conversations as well!
