I resonate with this a lot. Being a freelancer for the last 6 months has been very freeing for me. I get to do what I want, and what I think are good ideas, and that has lead to lots of growth, lots of cool jobs, multiple 70 hour work weeks, and a family vacation to hawaii when I wanted it (didn’t have to ask anyone for permission). The freedom really works for me, because I have a strong desire to provide for my family, I love this craft, and I enjoy the business side as well. I worked at a production company before this and I was very underutilized, to the point that one of my co-workers even went to our president and told him. I was limited by the in-house DP who was older than me, and I was never going to pass his income or get the high-end shoots while he was on staff, cuz of seniority. I had to ask permission for everything and most of my ideas got shot down, to the point where I stopped suggesting them, and would just do what people told me. I don’t regret the experience, I love the people there and grew a lot there, but that made it crystal clear to me that freelancing was for me. Anyways, love your walk and talk here man, it hits home for me!
Thanks for sharing Tommy. I think it’s healthy to share our perspectives. Even if only a few people watch this video, hopefully others can have some reflection as well. Full time employment is great but it’s not the only way. And some people aren’t met to do it.
Glad you’re finding your stride!
@@davidmorefield i agree, thx for sharing your perspective as well brother 🙏🏻
“It’s purely my choices, my consequences” That’s an excellent mindset to be in and understand.
A lot of employees have to deal with the consequences of their coworkers choices. Definitely don’t want that haha
I love your videos, mate! They're not fake or just doing car salesmen reviews of camera gear. Keep them like this, and you will have a follower for life!
Authenticity is the way!
That was me who left that comment.
Didn't intend to insult anyone. It is a personal frustration.
More often, I see filmmakers started recommending "youtube route". Then, for some of them, youtube becomes the main source of income.
Which tells me that if I don't do youtube, it looks like I might not succeed in this industry.
Little more context. I do have a condition with my vocal chords that make my voice raspy and not very pleasing to be listened to. Hence, my frustration with youtube. I didn't lose any clients that I know because of my condition. But that will be a huge obstacle of me doing youtube.
Anyway, good luck with your projects. Definitely will attend a meeting if it's in the Chicago area.
I’m not insulted and thats why I wanted to respectfully covered the channel name. Not trying to start an argument but rather just share my perspective. And thank you for adding to your perspective here. Those are some major factors that you listed.
The income is definitely a good perk. I’m not getting a lot right now but I could see it growing.
The hardest-working man in filmmaking delivers again. :)
Definitely not the hardest working but I appreciate the sentiment.
I’m actually quite lazy haha
A NYC meetup would be awesome! I'll be there!
👏🏻
RUclips definitely is a marketing tool. Love how it’s already been helping me as a filmmaker get eyes on my work.
Oh that’s great man!
So many creatives struggle with helping clients find solutions to their problems. Once I began helping businesses and business owners find solutions to their problems the money flood gates opened. Sadly, a lot of creatives think people should line up and give them money based on their artistry, etc. Sadly they will continue to struggle to have consistent work and blame everyone except for themselves. Help people find solutions to problems and you will always have money lining your pockets. I’m glad I learned this early on.
That sounds like a really valuable approach. Thanks for sharing. Do you have new ideas on the horizon?
@@davidmorefield learning and leveraging A.I. to make my workflow more efficient.
Another video I wish I watched when I was starting out, all those many moons ago. Thanks for sharing the insights.
Always 💪🏻
Great content brother. I think people underestimate how being easy to work with on set is more important than your skill set. I've hired people who are easier to be with over someone more tenured just because I don't want to put up with them. And I know people have picked me over others just because of our relationship.
Totally agree. And it makes sense. You want to be with a team who makes things easier.
NYC Meetup would be so great. I'm in the city so I would not mind help you and Jon out with this.
Thank you brother. I want to have as many people on board as possible.
Love the motivation! Great advice! I personally think "Action = Outcome. Outcome = Momentum"
Agreed
Amen brother. I also recently started tracking all of my jobs - the client, the rate, the role, etc. Hot take but I’d almost argue that having a full time job is less secure. What if you get fired and can’t find a new job? In any business you create your own network that can provide repeat work, new clients, etc. Also the income potential and freedom is limitless!!
And thanks for the shoutout bud. We’re going to make it happen! Congrats on 6k as well.
@@jonwaldman94 Yes, I made the same argument this week as well. The opposing perspective was that not everyone has the luxury to invite the risk of freelance.
My take is a staff job is just as risky. Your employment is not guaranteed there. And to your point, less secure. Once you’re out, you have no network or list of previous clients to reach out to.
Congrats on 6k! lets go!!!
Woo hoo 👏🏻
Amen to this David. I am not built to work for anyone at this point in my life. Been there, done that, didn't get the gold watch at retirement. Just stay consistent and do the work. I've been happy to see your growth in the industry. Keep it going, dude.
Thanks man. Yeah I feel insecure about working for a company that will determine my retirement income. I’d rather build it myself.
Awesome vlog as usual! I'm glad you mentioned what RUclips is for you, and how it's just modern-day marketing. The ROI on it is awesome since it's free and only costs you time to create content for it, rather than taking out ads on some print media or platform.
Totally! It’s working out well. Looking forward to seeing how it can build.
Great attitude and you’re well on your way!!!🎉
New York meetup please. I’ll def be there.

Great video brother! 🎉
