God knows how this RUclips algorithm does it, but hey it's landed me on your video. Mate, you seem like you've had the stuffing knocked out of you. I'm 52, an IT consultant (Linux), now I don't know your full profile but just of this video I'm going to say get yourself on LinkedIn, dust yourself down, draw every bit of positivity you can and in my opinion look for contract work. Any company who doesn't want to take on a perm over 50 guy I think would not bat an eyelid at having an over 50 consultant. Market yourself, be proud of yourself and your achievements. I've just had a knock, my mother passed away only 11 hours ago from cancer, yet I feel I need to try to do some work today for my client. Sounds cheesy but onwards and upwards. I will now watch your second video.

I'm in my mid forties. My wife died when I was 40, leaving me to raise my then 12 year old son by myself. I had to give up my shift work job to fit round his school schedule. This meant a drop in pay, trading down to a smaller, older, cheaper car and just managing to keep hold of the home. It was a struggle.
But we've both managed through it. I've adapted to my new job, my son is doing an apprenticeship and I have taken up Judo. So things can turn round.

Credit to you. So many of these videos are people without young children, to be fair they have way more options as most of the comments show. Its easy to drop out if you have no dependants. I am 47, have children. youngest is 5. I need employment until I am at least 60.

    • @The_Gryph
      @The_Gryph 4 месяца назад

@@QualityEmbeddedSoftware You may be abe to shave this down. Whatever you can manage as additional pension payments, or if possible, pop them in a managed fund with someone like Hargreaves lansdown. Even worst case scenario (markets only return 8% average a year for the entire period - which is not going to happen, never has, never will) and you end up having to go right up to state pension age, you're walking away with 60k for 24k invested. It's not much, but it will either stack with your other pension incomes or you can draw it down/replace what you might take as a tax free sum from your pension.
Finding the hundred, for sure is a challenge sometimes, so this is just illustrative. But do consider it. And consider a financial planner, it's money, but it's the best money you'll ever spend.

I did 25 years in IT. It didnt deserve me. I ended up at the age of 55 back where I started -- doing the only role that hadn't ben outsourced, centralized or off-shored. Remember your job didnt love you like you loved it. Dont let your career become your life, it's a one-sided and sometimes abusive relationship. There are other ways of living. All you need is some imagination and then jump into the unknown.

I'm over 40 and finally decided to leave my "career" in corporate London. Every day became a blur and working all days and weekends drained the life out of me. I have been unemployed for a year now and looking for a new challenge. It's not easy for us but I'm optimistic. This is a perfect opportunity to try new things, learn new things, create new groups and communities. We will be perfectly fine but I agree that leaving a "good career" sounds weird and many people start treating you like a stranger :) This is the perfect time to find out who your real friends are. Good luck Sir.

I'm reinventing myself. IT is finished in the UK as jobs are remote and being offshord to cheaper countries.
I'm using my skills in the construction industry. Learning new things and something we need in this country.

I was 20 last week) for various reasons I've been unemployed a lot, the main one being I was born with a pretty decent disability, it's not easy finding someone who wants to employ 'my people'. I've just decided to have an all or nothing attitude to it. Just go for what I want. I know there are real world things like paying the bills to worry about but I really think using the situation to just decide what you really want and go for it is the best way forward.

Spent the last few years living off the savings I made working in the industry. Started selling on EBay, then got into cleaning cars (Valeting). Hi, I too am over 50 (almost 56), live in Devon, and have been in IT, working for myself, for the last 27 years, until I decided to give it all up at the end of June.
I’ve not worked since then but have been trying to see what I want to do away from the stresses of managing multiple projects for clients each week. It’s taken me quite a while to come down from work, as it was quite a shock to the system after all those years but the summer has helped me think through things.
I am going to start applying for post office and food store jobs; something where I don’t have to worry about things and can leave the job at the door when I leave it each day.
Anyway, I hope things come good for you, but until then enjoy beautiful Dartmoor. I love it up there for a good walk and let the wind blow away the cobwebs.

It's fantastic that you're taking time to figure out what you want to do next. Exploring options like the post office or a food store sounds like a great way to find a less stressful work environment. I don't want a job that is time pressured like multi drop deliveries, I could imagine that being tough, but I don't know for sure as Ive not tried it.

That can be used to change your life, take a lower paid but, possibly more rewarding type of employment (something that, up to now, you might not have considered viable). Knowing that is only four years away opens up the possibility of taking fixed term contracts etc. I hope your journey is a good one and I shall look forward to hearing your progress :)

I only had two job interviews after, and the 2nd one got me a science technician in a local high school. Not great money, but the hours suit perfectly. I appreciate academic change isnt for everyone. I did get offered a job working part time in IT and initially excepted it, but I called them and decided not to take it. I really don't want to work in IT again. I'm trying to survive until I'm 67 on savings, but I'd be lucky to survive 3 years, The move to Yorkshire really hasn't helped my job hunting as being nearer to London helped my job finding prospects. Will keep looking for something. Good luck going forward

Know yourself and give yourself a break from stress . I envy your freedom . I'd love a camper myself . My son is high functioning autistic and he works in IT . Hated school and college but bloomed at uni got top degree in media . Xxxxx

I'm turning 60 next year and have been wondering when I will be in the same situation as you. I started out in IT and worked my way though as a developer, working for some great companies over the years. Been at my current company for 17 years and recently been wondering what my future will be now I am reaching a milestone. Wish you the best and hope all works out for you.

I'm 58. Had a serious motorcycle accident 6 months ago and am taking voluntary redundancy next month. I'm going to take the time to recover fully and maybe retrain. It won't be the first time I've made a change to my profession so quite interested in what the future holds.
Im just glad to be alive, basically.

Hey sorry to hear of you accident! so glad you are ok. I must admit sometimes when out on the can-am it can be so hectic on the roads! we were only sat in the jack rabbit pub on the weekend after my other half did a charity absail for the NHS, we were sat outside and next thing we hear was a horn and then a huge impact no one was hurt but one of the cars was totalled. I think someone tried to cut in to fast when they should have merged in turn. It must have totally ruined someones weekend!

Refreshing to see your honesty and career pathways. Keep positive and live every day, I left a life long career at 51 and was fortunate to find a second career and love it. Lovely organisation who care about their staff. I found wonderful people where i least expected it and will ever be thankful for my second career. 🙏

At 16, back in 1996, I was loading and slotting tapes for the big mainframes and eventually I became an AS400 operator. I quite enjoyed it, but the nightshifts were tough!

I'm 53 and my 30 year career as a studio audio engineer was made obsolete due to the advancement of music and audio technology..Currently freelancing and by the grace of God, getting by.. I also work at a flower shop seasonally.. There is no plan B.. Be fortunate that your health is good.. No kids (it seems). The workforce is certainly not easy if you're over 50.. But good help is hard to find and we are still capable.. My yoga practice has kept me calm and just know that things are never permanent.. Take what you can, be grateful and work hard, for we don't know where that might lead but we tried our best and the universe knows that..

wow, yes! the whole engineer burnout is sooo real! and affects way to many people! god only knows what he has on store for me! a part of me really is hoping I don't get another IT job! so that will push me an another direction :) I really like the idea of working for Tesco delivering food to customers who have bought online! I did speak to one driver just the other day and he said "it's the best job he has had"

@@TheOver50MeandersI was heading towards burnout in a retail management role and was deeply unhappy. I got a job in a school as a caretaker, after 8 years I have more money than I had, very little stress and work a 4 day week. I did take a 10k plus pay cut over night but it was the best thing ever . As you say don't go back if you don't want to

I detested everything about school. Somehow I managed to scrape together a few "O" Levels. I joined the military at 17 because my dad kicked me out of the family home. Served 6 years. Then worked 25 years on the trains. "Retired" at 48 as I no longer wanted a boss. I spent about 18 months learning how to become an internet marketeer. I now sell products on line as an affiliate marketeer earning commissions of 20% plus per sale. I am now free as a bird as the business is set up to earn me an income 24/7 and is 98% automated.

Was in the same boat last Oct, out of the blue and at 50 also. Took 8 months to find something else and had the same thoughts, do you use it as a chance for something new or fall into the same thing again. Unfortunately for me the pressures of having to earn a certain amount was the major factor and I’ve had to stick to a similar thing again. I’m hoping it’s a good change and will obviously give it 110% but I wish I’d had more choice to get out of corporate life. What I would say is that for the second time in my life I feel I wasted a huge amount of time chasing online applications, all of which were entirely fruitless. Once again it was through knowing someone that could put in a good word that got me through the door of where I am now, so my advice would be to focus on network more than anything. Will subscribe and look forward to following your journey. I also thought of capturing the process but didn’t have the confidence to start it. If there’s anything I can do to help please let me know.
