Awesome review! As for water resistance, Rolex officially states it’s 100mt. I tested mine (a 16570 dated 2007, with cal. 3185) underwater and brought it to -37mt on a shipwreck. Needless to say: test passed!
Awesome watch! I am really torn between this and the sub date and the only hang up I have with the Explorer II is the 100m water resistance. For some reason that's bugging me even though I'll never come close to testing that point. Keep up the cool Explorer videos!
In my opinion, the GMT complication is much more useful in real application than the dive timing bezel. As far as 100m water resistance goes, the odds of you “finding” yourself in a situation that 100m meters is not enough is unlikely. If you do dive and the 100 puts you off, then maybe just grab a GSHOCK or something for dive outings only. That’s my two cents
I love this watch and have the 226570 and the 16570 both black dial. The black dial is more toned down and less obvious than the white dial. This was the main reason I chose the black dial over the white, even though I love the white dial. I'd love to have both version 🙂

Keep up the good content and your photography looks amazing. Will definitely check it out further.
Only knocks I can think of are no quickset date so you have to advance the hour hand to dial in the date if this watch is part of a larger rotation. Plus brand recognition isn’t always welcome. Some guys compliment you but some can pull a face and see you as that Rolex guy. Maybe being careful in public places.
Yeah, since it is an everyday watch the no quickset date hasn't been a problem since I only need to change the date by one day every other month. Thanks for the tip. Cheers
@@cheynewalls the quickset idea is that it’s for international travellers like a GMT. You set the orange hand to hometime and shift the hour hand to the new zone. The date follows the hand. Then back again at home. Hilariously this wasn’t a GMT function originally. The whole second time reading was only to distinguish night or day in 24 hour mode when, wait for it, caving away from sunlight for days on end. Hilarious!

Thanks. Cool review. I have owned the exact same watch for probably 10 years or so. At one point, I thought it was my least favorite of my (few) watches, and that I would sell it. I decided to wear it for a while first. Damn. Great daily wear. Love it now. It is my favorite watch. Probably will sell my other watches! And if you are wearing a sub, people may think you are just another LA douche!> Any real "watch guy" who sees you wearing an explorer - will have mad respect for that.
It is very well known that Rolex makes a rugged watch. I wore one every day for 12 years and it still keeps perfect time. Banged it numerous times. Any watch you wear daily is going to take a beating.
The Rolex Explorer II works great for timing. I try to stay away from chronographs when I'm out in the field due to the movement being a bit more delicate.
Thank you, Before this watch I have gone through a few G-shocks, some Victorinox and a Breitling aviator 8. Those all last only a year or two, looking forward to having the Rolex Explorer for alot longer. Cheers
I would like to learn about photography. I have a Canon 90D, with different lenses. What do you think of that camera? I know that your gear / camera is not automatic, but what do you think of the 90D? Also, love your Explorer II ! I am a scuba diver and have a Rolex Deep-Sea Dweller and an OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph with 600M is water resistant to 600 M/ 2000 feet / 60 bar, and has a helium-escape valve. The Omega is superior being a certified chronometer timepiece, which is powered by the in-house, Swiss Co-Axial calibre 3313! Of course, the Rolex can withstand the extreme underwater pressure of 390 bars without malfunctioning, but I will be hard-pressed if I ever dive one tenth that depth!
I know a watch like this is a lot of money. No more so than a new motorbike or new car. I am wanting to buy one. I asked a dealer in Melbourne, Australia if they had an Air King. They said they didn’t. Rolex really needs to sort their supply situation out, don’t you think? Haven’t asked about an Explorer or Explorer II. Amazing how all the sellers on Chrono24 managed to buy the watch (they don’t want) whereas, the people whom would like to purchase one can’t do so. Imagine actually going into an Authorised Dealer and actually being able to buy the watch you want.
Hi Mark, Thank you for the comment. The waiting doesn't really bother me. I waited about 6 months for my Explorer II and totally worth the wait. Its not like you are paying upfront so wait time wasn't or will be an issue for me. Just put your naming on the waiting list, and you will be getting the call before you know it. Cheers
Thanks for the update, quick question but do you take the watch off when you go to sleep? I know you probably don't take it off in the wild but when you're at home.
Why have two watch when one will do the job? I like G-shock watches, have owned a few, but don't like how I have to replace them every few years. Looking forward to 50+ years with my Explorer II. Cheers
@@cheynewalls - it's a lot more likely to last 50+ years if it doesn't get stolen or smashed on rocks. Solar g-shocks can last decades without maintenance. If you get multi-band, you don't even have to set the time. You'll have perfect accuracy for the lifetime of the watch. I put my last one through 10 years of abuse that would destroy a Rolex and I never had to set the time or change the battery. Loved the countdown timer and stop watch features too. If you want one that will last a really long time, has some history and will hold it's value then check out the gw-5000u. But there's lots of variety if that one doesn't float your boat
@@yogiyoda I had a digital screen fail and on my MT-G the Mode button broke after less than a year. The G-shocks are great watches, I just don't think they are the best in very cold weather. Both of my G-shocks broke when I was snow camping. The extreme cold really seems to hurt the digital make up of the G-Shocks, not the case with mechanical watches. Cheers
Very untrue, I have had g-shocks before, but they only last for a few years. I wanted something that would last my lifetime, that is a Rolex. If you watch my other layer videos I'm trying to disguise the watch with different straps so it doesn't look like a Rolex, but I still get the toughness and accuracy that will last for decades.
The good thing about the Rolex Explorer II Polar dial is its not really recognized at a Rolex watch by most people. Doesn't look like an iconic Rolex, a little bit of a saving grace.
I think you missed the point a bit. Yes a lot of watches can count seconds, but very very few can do it for decades. While being an everyday watch that can be worn in the field and at high-end events.

“Rubber B” makes a great rubber strap. But nothing wrong with the Rolex Bracelet.
I don’t think an explorer’s function is timing might be better off with a Daytona.
The Rolex Explorer II works great for timing. I try to stay away from chronographs when I'm out in the field due to the movement being a bit more delicate.
Good review - thanks! Which watches did you decommission after you got this one?
Thank you, Before this watch I have gone through a few G-shocks, some Victorinox and a Breitling aviator 8. Those all last only a year or two, looking forward to having the Rolex Explorer for alot longer. Cheers
Great review
What was wait time like for you and this particular Rolex?
Thanks
Check out my AD video - ruclips.net/video/4Ys6XZ_OyHk/видео.html - It has all that info. Cheers
Do you know if Rolex is still producing the 40mm version?
Not as an Explorer II, but you can now get an Explorer in 40mm.
I'm not to familiar with the Canon 90D, I'm sure its a good camera. Great watches, I had a OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean and loved it. Cheers
Nice review. I have the 216570. Any comparison thoughts?
Thank you, both are great watches! Haven't put the the 216570 to the test, so can't really compare.
Hi Liam, Yes, when I'm at home I take it off at night. When I'm traveling it doesn't leave my wrist day or night. Cheers
Hi.. do you know of the bracelet are stump they have numbers? Thanks
Sorry, not sure. I have never seen numbers on my bracelet, but I have never really looked.
scratch? it's called "antiquing!"
I 100% agree, Cheers
Why not get a g-shock for filming bears and traveling in sketchy areas? You can save the Rolex for safer occasions
@@yogiyoda Wow 10 years, that is good. All my G-shocks have only lasted 3 or 4 years before I had to get ride of them.
@@cheynewalls - what broke on them? If your g-shocks aren't lasting for 5 years, I don't see your Rolex lasting that long either
Cheers
A g-shock is tougher and more accurate. You bought a rolex for the status.
I am not wearing any, and I mean ANY watch that displays greenish lume during the day!!
You have to watch your back in Portland. Place is a dump.
The good thing about the Rolex Explorer II Polar dial is its not really recognized at a Rolex watch by most people. Doesn't look like an iconic Rolex, a little bit of a saving grace.
Dude acting like you need a rolex to count seconds is a bit much
I think you missed the point a bit. Yes a lot of watches can count seconds, but very very few can do it for decades. While being an everyday watch that can be worn in the field and at high-end events.
@@cheynewalls very versatile watch completely agree! I just thought you were laying it on a little thick when saying that you needed the 10k+ watch to measure picture exposures, I am just nitpicking a bit great review overall.
