Here is your tie-breaker. Your Explorer II can be used as a compass during daylight hours. If the GMT hand corresponds to your local time zone, point the hour hand towards the sun, and the GMT hand will point north if you are in the northern hemisphere. If you are in the southern hemisphere, the GMT hand will point south.
I own both as well. My Explorer 2 is the older 16570 and wears much smaller than the new 42mm model. It flys so far below the radar I don’t think I’ve had a single comment on it in 13 years of daily wear. The Sub on the other hand gets a lot of comments. It’s the definitive Rolex. The Sub is more like jewelry - you hit that nail on the head. I like them both for different reasons but if I could only have one it would be my Explorer 1!
I've had a 16570 for a couple years now and you're right, very rare someone picks up on it. I love that about it. I've been looking for another daily watch and landed on the sub. How do they battle for wrist time for you?
@@nortonrob_tx It is a tough one. I pretty much now just switch off every month. I've been wearing the Submariner all of Oct, so going to wear the Explorer II for Nov. Cheers
@@nortonrob_tx I wear the Sub in the summer and Exp 2 in the winter. I actually put the Exp 2 on a Rubber B strap which made it very sporty and comfortable. I wear my Exp 1 - 36mm to work daily - that's my daily driver!
Fun vid - thanks. I just got the black dial Explorer 2, I think it’s a great choice if you are a one watch guy as it’s a little more dressy than the polar. Not as dressy as a sub, but subs are everywhere. I like the slightly bigger size of the Explorer 2 as well (I’m 6’2) - my brother who is 5’10 seems to rock his sub perfectly. The black dial has a bit more of a 70s vibe, polar feels more modern I think.
Watching your videos convinced me to get the explorer II and love it! Keep making this kind of content please it’s fun to watch and informative in ways other watch channels aren’t!
I own both these watches myself (40mm ceramic sub) and could have told you it was a draw without all that scoring 😉. Both are brilliant watches with different purposes and functionality. Whilst I find the sub somewhat boring it’s always the watch I chose to go on vacation, that glidelock clasp is superb and the watch is more versatile . I also own a DJ41 which I would recommend for smarter occasions and formal settings.

Great video. I’ve been following your series of videos and just wanted to thank you for creating this content. Very few reviewers actually put these two watches through their paces the way you do. It is refreshing and informative to see
Love the Explorer 2, I actually got rid of my Sub 41 and purchased the Polar 42, did not like the attention the Sub received especially as my daily wearer. Personally, the Sub doesn’t look great with a suit like the Datejust due to the case style for black tie events. Great video
Thank you. Yeah the Explorer II is a great watch. You are right, the Submariner or Explorer II aren't the best dress watches, but I think they can pass. When I travel, I just like to take one watch, hate leaving a watch in the car or hotel room. So I make due with the Submariner or Explorer II when I have to travel for both a black tie event as well as want to get out hiking or exploring the area. Cheers
Maximum depth reached by a SCUBA diver is about 330 meters. That's a world record. Recreational SCUBA divers have a maximum depth of 18 meters for Open Water, 30 meters for Advanced, and 40 meters for Deep certified divers. Technical divers may go down to 80 or 90 meters, but exceeding 100 meters is rare. Your gas consumption is insanely high at that depth, so you need to carry a lot of cylinders (with special mixes) in order to dive that deep. The depth rating for Rolex watches is mostly down to the case's resistance to buckling. Not so much the gaskets. All Rolex watches use the same gaskets (with the exception of twin and triplock crowns). The Submariner was tested to 1000 meters, and the seals held up perfectly. Only the case back buckled and destroyed the movement. All Rolex watches are tested to 125% of their depth rating and need to remain watertight and fully operational in order to pass. I'm sure they can handle a lot more than 125%. You do need to get the watch checked for water resistance regularly (say once every year or two years) to guarantee it is still watertight. Rubber seals get compressed, dry out, and deteriorate.
Thank you very much for this information. I dive a lot off the Channel Islands with friends and my Rolex Submariner, but I'm only going down about 10 to 15 meters in the kelp forests. Cheers
42mm is the smallest I go, I’m big and tall so my Sub is my two Sea Dwellers 43mm, I just don’t like the orange hand on the Explorer II for some reason.
You gave the Sub a 10 for a bezel for when diving. The gmt hand when travelling is needed. So i think it should be a 9, because you could hack it and reset to local time, but the gmt function means you don’t have to. I appeal for the Explorer 2 Great vid 🙌🏾
Both watches are technically tool watches and both as durable as they come but I’d say Explorer II is a bit more sporty. Doesn’t have the bling from the bezel, hands and hour markers like the sub, plus it has the 24hr hand.
Thank you for your great reviews on the Explorer 2. I just bought it myself and I have a question. I like to use straps on my watches but when I installed leather straps on the Explorer 2 the strap gets scratched by the case due to (1) proximity of the lung holes to the case and (2) very sharp edges of the case at the lung space. Do you have this problem? Is there a remedy? Perhaps it is possible to smoothen the sharp edges by a watchmaker without affecting the use of the bracelet later on? Any advice would me most welcome.
Thank you, Yes I have the same problem, but it doesn't bother me to scratch the back of the watch when I'm changing out straps. However if you do want to avoid scratches just put a bit of painters tape (that blue tape) on and around where you sit the strap. Use a razor blade to cut carefully away from the lug space, or before putting the tape on the watch, cut out perfect pieces to fit on the lugs. This works great for me when I'm changing out straps on other peoples watches. Cheers
Thank you for the response. I actually meant something different- not about the scratches i could make with the spring bar tool when installing the strap. The problem is that after installing the leather strap - because it is very close to the case and the case edges are super sharp - when using the leather strap it gets damaged very rapidly by the friction with the watch. It is an Explorer specific issue that it seems other also have. It happens with many straps (not all, but most) and only with this watch. I just have not figure out a way to prevent it besides putting tape at the lugs what is not the most stylist approach.
@@mgguzmanb Oh Sorry, Yes I have that same problem, but after the after the initial little damage, it seems to be fine, once it clears away the area that hits the sharp edges.
