Just got the 216570 on Wednesday of this week. It’s my first Rolex and I could not be happier with this purchase. I’m a bigger guy so the larger casing fits me nicely. I love that I can wear this at work with dress clothes and on weekends with jeans and a t-shirt. So glad you posted this video!! Keep up the great work!!

I bought a 16570 T in 2015 for $3150. I am a Land Rover guy who appreciates classic design. I put it in the safe until today and started looking into value. Holy crap...I should have bought three or four. I love that it does not look at all pretentious. Simple clean design. Thank you for a great video.
The 16750 has always been my favorite Rolex, hands down! I bought my polar one brand new in 2003 and I still love it! It was hard for me to decide between the polar and the black..., I end up buying a black one two and they are my 2 favorite watches in my 10 watch collection! I would not change them for any other Rolex model.
Love the 16570 - 40mm red GMT hand, it is just unique and has become an iconic classic and the fact they are no longer continuing 40mm it will go up in value.
Honoured to be mentioned by you Teddy. Thanks a million! The Explorer's are such hidden gems (understated, very un-rolex for the most part) I had a thought the other day about whether Tudor would ever consider reintroducing the 1655 aesthetic and made some mock-ups. And I fully agree that the modern Exp 2 should get a bit of a refresh (bringing the size down would be great for us skinny guys) maybe the introduction of a Ceramic bezel insert, but a Grey insert instead of Black. Maybe Basel 2020 will be the year of the Explorer?

Absolutely the 216570. My 16570 polar has recently been serviced, and is running +1 second after 6 weeks ... not per day, TOTAL. Not only that but it has been dropped once onto a wood floor from about 4' ... and I do basically everything in it. I love this watch so much. Good choice Teddy!

Just purchased the 16570, black dial, Super LumiNova, drilled lugs, and solid endlinks. Love the value. Under 10K the Rolex’s you’re limited to are primarily time only, or with date under 40mm (really mainly 36mm and under). At 39mm you’re literally only getting time only. So to get a Rolex with complications, with the Rolex classics (Mercedes hands, magnified date), while still being lowkey, it’s just amazing.
I'm a 216570 owner. my father had a 16570 in his collection when I was in college and I always loved it. My first Rolex was a Stainless Sub. Then I made the jump to the Explorer II (216570) and have worn it day in and day out since 2013. Great everyday wear (just as Teddy said). I have a few other brands and they all get wrist time, but this is the go-to and I have a hard time reaching over it in the winder to grab something different. Great review!
I’ve owned a polar in both the 40mm and 42mm case size. Both are terrific watches. For me, at 73 the 42 is my choice. It’s easier on my eyes. Additionally, the 42 has a much better clasp.
I like how you always show a proper wrist shot so people can get a idea how a watch might fit them. The 42mm didn’t look bad at all on your 6.25” wrist. You could wear either. I wasn’t thinking it would work for my 7” wrist but maybe it will after all
Hey Ted, thanks again for another stellar review but this time on a timeless classic- the Rolex Explorer II. This watch is truly the embodiment of a "one watch collection" and the minor scratches on the case speak volumes to your immense appreciation and utility for the piece.
I couldn’t agree more, the polar dial is a total game changer. I own a 216570 myself and I love it. I’ve had every Rolex except a Daytona and air king and IMO it’s the best all around watch yet it stands out from the crowd.
If you like skiing, there is no other watch on the planet better than the Explorer II Polar. I got mine 15 years ago, feels great, I always keep it on when swimming
I also swim with mine! I was thinking, am I crazy? After Teddy mentioned maybe not to. I think as long as within a reasonable time of service or water resist test its fine.
Sir, you are the best, even though you are a young dude. I have worn Rolexes since 1968 and have 4 models. The only person more passionate than me about Rolex seems to be you. Keep it up with Rolex and certainly other watches.
Was initially put off by the 216750 . Thought it looked clumsy and just didn’t appeal to me going by images online . Went to purchase the older model 16570 . Tried both on and to my surprise instantly fell in love with the 216570 black dial. The slim case makes the 42 size work perfectly. It hugs the wrist . Absolutely stunning . My advice try one on and like me you might be pleasantly surprised ! 👍🏻
here's what I think, the white dial is better in the 16570 while the black is better on the 216570/226570. The black 42mm helps the watch look a bit smaller while the white 42 looks large and I find the orange gmt hand works better with the black dial than the white, while the red gmt hand complements the white 16570 nicely.
I’m a 50 something curmudgeon but I think the older bracelets wear much more comfy. However I love the newer dial but wish they’d left it at 40. Rolex got into the 40+ game too late and is starting to look a little silly for it by 2022 here.
Don't forget about the white dialed turn-o-graph. It is unmistakably a sports watch, considering that it was the first Rolex designed with a rotatable bezel.
Your previous 1 month review of the 16570 was the last straw- I ended up buying the exact same model last month! I can't seem to rotate it off my wrist. I follow the all-purpose ethos in almost everything I buy and this thing is the real deal. Basically a GMT Master II at a 30% discount and no "questions" .
The older model is far more desirable in my opinion. The proportions are far more appealing than the big oversized features of the newer models. I love red gmt hand also, more elegant and classic.
Really nice review, Teddy. Very professionally videoed too. I just bought my first polar Explorer II (circa 2011) last weekend and wore it on the slopes skiing-very cool look in the snow indeed. The red hour hand is its most stunning feature and unique compared to almost every other watch available, particularly striking in the current model. I actually really like the black dial version too as the hour markers highlights its distinctive 18ct gold finish that is not so apparent on the white dial, lending itself a more dressy appearance. It’s almost a different watch in that regard.
I just watched this video again and boy do I wish the 40m was still available for $5500-$7000, and even the new one in the $8k range. Amazing how fast that price jump was in 2 years. The old one is now more expensive than the new one was 2 years ago!
I've got a tritium 16570 (1995) I bought about a year ago and I swim with it! I think as long as its within a reasonable time of service or pressure test its ok (I got it certified pre-owned, so serviced by RSC). I agree the 16570 takes the cake although the bracelet is so nice on the new ones. Moreso than the bigger case size, what really kills the new one for me is the oversized hands and markers.. too cartoonish. But overall still a beautiful watch (I like the orange hand but also not crazy about the orange text). It's gone up about $500 since I bought it. On the one hand its nice to see it rise since I own one, on the other... I don't want Rolex prices to rise for obvious reasons. Great video as always, Teddy.
If you plan to get 42mm i suggest to get the black version because 42 looks better in black. If you fancy 16570 40mm get the polar (that is a must) Trust me
16570 Hands down. It is more classic-looking and is a little more wearable as an everyday watch as well as a dressy watch whereas the orange stands out as not quite as classy.
Teddy is the only watch RUclips channel I still trust. Other channels steal Grand Seiko photos, sell fake Daytona’s or sell vintage watches with poor quality and damaged movements. No names but we know who they all are.
I like the thicker/orange GMT hand, and also love the orange type on the dial of 216570. I'd prefer the 40mm case, but would still pick the newest gen based on the use of the complementary orange, and the drastically improved oyster bracelet.
So Underrated, that I'm in the waiting list for over a year now with a good history at that AD. For the black dial to be precise. That Rolex situation is totally absurde.
I've recently purchased the 2021 226570 Polar and do love this watch. I also own a 2019 Date Submariner and I agree with you on the size. My wrist is slightly over 7 inches but would rather see the Explorer II at 40mm. With that said I'm still very happy with my 226570. Great video on both watches 👏👍
I generally like larger watches, but I think stylistically the 16570 is a much better looking watch. I also really can’t stand the ugly orange GMT hand. However with that being said, the clasp on the newer models really kills the old thin crappy pressed metal clasp.
I agree with the 16570. Don't mind the orange hand too much, would like them to sample with it in the future. The bracelet, yeah, 216570 no doubt. Thanks for watching buddy!
Great video, very good information on both watches. I prefer the 16570. It was my first luxury watch. It can be used in any occasion. When my collection grew it became my outdoors watch.
Informative video, I recently purchased the 226570 in polar and black versions because I couldn't decide, I honestly find the black better but they both are excellent tool/sport watches for me with amazing built quality and specs.
Good review. The 216570 has a great balance in appearance especially because it is relatively thin compared to a lot of 42mm watches. The larger hands (largest in the Rolex line BTW) also give it a unique, almost cartoonish, look. I added a black Rubber B strap with the thin orange stripe and the watch becomes a fantastic "modern" interpretation of what a Rolex is today.
16570 would be my choice. The overall aesthetics just work so muvh better than the over bulked case and indecies of the newer version. Thanks for the video teddy 🙏
TB… another terrific video!! Are there any rumors or street intel about Rolex offering a 40mm (or 36/38mm) Explorer II in the near future?? I’m waiting!
I have the new Orange hand and polar dial 226570, it's my first Rolex as part of a milestone in my life and I just love it, I didn't had the luxury of trying both on my wrist, but I'd say this... My Explorer 2 is the biggest watch I've bought (Including my Garmin 7S 42mm which is the same), and all the future watches will be smaller. Funny thing is that for a number of years I've set my mind to this watch, and looked at other Rolex watches and decided I'm not a Rolex guy with a bunch of Rolex watches, buuut... now, having the Explorer 2 it suddenly opens the door to take a look at maybe 2 other Rolex watches... it's just beautiful. From afar it's sounds tacky a Rolex watch, but when you own one and see the craftmanship, and then the Rolex crown logo, it's a statement, it's bold it and it's special. For now the next watch is a dress watch and I have a pretty good idea which one, either a JLC rose gold ultra thin moon phase, or a JLC reverso . Both will eventually end in my collection, but which comes first is for the future to unfold. As for the other Rolex watches I'm looking at, is of course the Submariner, and a datejust fluted bezel on a jubilee bracelet with a blue dial. The gate has been opened and I became a watch enthousiast, possibly a Rolex enthousiast too.
Having a larger wrist I’m drawn to the 216570. I even like the black dial almost as much as the white dial. If there was a significant savings with the black dial, I’d grab it in a heart beat. GREAT video, Teddy!
I bought a 16570 new in ‘96. Literally wore it 24/7 as my only watch until ~2010 (when I started buying more watches, then it was a regular watch in rotation). I wore it swimming in ocean many times, beach, hot tubs, showers, hiking, gym…everywhere all the time. After ~25 years of flawless operation and excellent time keeping I got it serviced and they replaced the chipped crystal, I refused polishing (I wasn’t easy on this watch!). It is gorgeous still with all of its patina scratches and little dings. Amazing watch and IMO the size and relative dimensions are far superior to that of the 216570. I’ll never sell it. My sons will inherit it.
I bought both 16570 and 226570. One in black one in white. The 16570 is great for understated everyday wear without the bracelet (I put that on a Rubber B strap, original bracelet is not great when compared to modern ones), and the 226570 is surprisingly great to wear with the bracelet.
my dream polar explorer would be the 16570 with an orange GMT hand. I like the new iterations but don't think the polar dial works anywhere near as well. Looking forward to seeing what they do for the 50th anniversary next year
My preference is definitely 42mm white case ,bar none, BEAUTIFUL. I'M a big dude w/ 9" plus wrist, I'm going to buy a 42mm ASAP, Fell In love with this masterpiece !!!
It’s obvious which model I prefer, I bought the 216570 Polar in last august from my AD here in Sweden. For me was this model perfect, because it’s a 42mm size. That size is my sweet spot! Also, I love the orange GMT hand, it just pops and looks so cool! I think both will be future classics, there will be a Big demand on both! Rolex gonna support a Big marketing of these two, there for will the price increase. Here in Sweden the price increased with 13% on january 1st. (Retailprice) Thanks Teddy for a great comparison!!👌🏻🤩
I own the 216 and am amazed how comfortable it is. It very rarely comes off my wrist as I don’t notice it’s there. With the sun shining at an angle on the watch it’s incredible how much “pop” there is to the watch with every detail showing. The lume even shows up during the day if it faces the sun for more than 10 sec. Mine holds right at the +2 sec per day; considering taking it to the AD to have it regulated closer to zero. Overall very pleased with the watch.
My favourite is my Y series 16570 black dial. It’s become an absolute go-to piece, alongside Snowflake and Speedie. You can really see how fat the new ones are when you put them side by side, I was actually fishing for a Polar dial, but found this one and decided to take a punt. So glad I did, the black dial just seems more understated and versatile, it can be worn with almost anything. Still love the polar dial, tho. Congrats on yours Teddy, and great video.
Recently picked up the Explorer II 16570 version 3 and love this for an everyday wear and something I'm not thinking about when wearing. Price point on these are great, I would say mine is new/ used and picked up for $6,250 which is great for todays market.
Thanks for the review Teddy - 16570 is the pick in polar white - would go the same choice as you, proportions are better and love the more traditional vintage vibe
Great comparison. I’m a huge fan of the Explorer II Polar. My 16570 has the lug holes. I prefer the 24 hand of the 16570. Bought it used 20+ years ago and swapped out the Tritium with a Super Luminova face and hands. Had to replace the mainspring but it has been a workhorse.
The black dial will gain more popularity when more people realize it has the phantom dial hands. The white dial looks nicer, but the black dial is the one you should invest in. Edit: I'm talking about the 216570 of course. Also my very first Rolex I bought early January. First one of 2020 :D
Teddy, I have a question for you and other proud Explorer II owners. And let me say I have never seen seen or handled an Explorer II in person, hence this question: Can you use the second-timezone hand as a countdown-timer. For example, if I wanted to perform a countdown of 3 hours and 15 minutes. Could I set the second-timezone hand at around 20:45 and monitor it as it worked it's way up to the noon midnight position? I know that the second-timezone hand is set independently but I I was not sure if the minute hand governed part of the positioning of the second-timezone hand. I hope this question is clear. If not, feel free to troll me. Thanks!
It wouldn't be any good for what you described. You'd be better off with a dive watch for that. The GMT hand is set exactly one hour (or multiples of one hour) behind the hour hand.
i bought a "swiss" only 16570 (1999) last nov in japan. its a solid "investment" / buy. It is going up, but some countries i feel are still undervaluing this watch. For exp 2. its either 1655 or 16570. the new one is too big (even though bigger watches are supposedly in fashion)
I have completed and rounded out my watch collection with the purchase of both the Explorer 214270 and the Explorer 2 16570. In the combination of these two watches, I have pretty much every single design element in Rolex watches. Oyster case, crown guards, screw down crown, cyclops eye, GMT hand, numerals, lollipop seconds hand, Mercedes hour hand, a black and a white face. Oh, also I get both a modern and a vintage bracelet! After the ownership of these two Rolexes, I don’t have a desire to buy another Rolex!
6’4 250 7.5 wrist…I actually like 40mm watches in most cases but the 42mm GMT II looks great and it’s more of a weekend watch so the slightly bigger proportions work as I live in SWFL and it’s shorts and Polo/T Shirts all the time…Polar White is the way to go ….it goes with everything and stands out in a unique way..love it..
I own and love the 216570. But i do agree that the size sometimes feel too big on my 7.25 wrist. Wish it was 40mm too. So, where did you get that screen saver? 😄
How can you tell what year a 16570 is ? ive bought a 2007 but sure its early 2000's as i read in the mid 2000's they started putting ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX around the rim (rehaut) between the glass and face. Thanks

I like how you always show a proper wrist shot so people can get a idea how a watch might fit them. The 42mm didn’t look bad at all on your 6.25” wrist. You could wear either. I wasn’t thinking it would work for my 7” wrist but maybe it will after all
"Yeah, I'm kinda pathetic... I have problems..." I think you speak for all of us in the watch community haha
I see you have a new review format. Nice Teddy! Beautiful video
Thank you my friend! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hey Ted, thanks again for another stellar review but this time on a timeless classic- the Rolex Explorer II. This watch is truly the embodiment of a "one watch collection" and the minor scratches on the case speak volumes to your immense appreciation and utility for the piece.
Thank you, Nicholas. I definitely have not babied the piece. Such a great watch.
I bought my 216570 brand new in July 2014. Worn it every day since then. It's just gone in for its first service and I miss it so much ........
I love the look of the newer model, but the lug to lug length sizes potential buyers out of it.
Agreed! Especially the sweet spot transition models with engraved rehauts
There it is! To think I was just wondering what had happened to that comparison video 2 weeks ago, yet you were already making it. Thanks, Teddy.
Haha it took a while to get this one done. I am usually working on several videos at once. Thanks for being patient and watching Jasper!
This video was super helpful. Just bought a 16570 F series a couple weeks ago for my 25th anniversary. First real watch. So happy.
If you fancy 16570 40mm get the polar (that is a must)
Trust me
16570 40mm SEL bracelet with lug holes and upgraded 3186 movement-simply the best. Nice one, Arch.
16570 Hands down. It is more classic-looking and is a little more wearable as an everyday watch as well as a dressy watch whereas the orange stands out as not quite as classy.
Hands DOWN. I’d like the new one if it was still 40mm
The 40mm polar is amazing, the white dial is so flexible it works in every situation! But the best is one with the "ivory / cream" dial.
Teddy is the only watch RUclips channel I still trust.
Other channels steal Grand Seiko photos, sell fake Daytona’s or sell vintage watches with poor quality and damaged movements. No names but we know who they all are.
Fantastic comparison Teddy. I love both of these polar dials. I love the white dial with the black surrounds. Thank you for another awesome video :)
I like the thicker/orange GMT hand, and also love the orange type on the dial of 216570. I'd prefer the 40mm case, but would still pick the newest gen based on the use of the complementary orange, and the drastically improved oyster bracelet.
I bought the 16570 Polar and 216570 Black and I love them both for different reasons! Cheers
I love the small scratches on the case, well-worn teddy, well-worn
They are made to be worn after all. I don't baby my watches.
Used but not abused
Definitely underrated
Agreed. Starting to get more love as of late though.
Bruce The Shark ,,, way to go the intended porpoise of the tool watch
I purchased the 216570 in December. I’ve since put a RubberB orange strap on it and couldn’t be happier! Love it more than my brand new 124060
I have the new Orange hand and polar dial 226570, it's my first Rolex as part of a milestone in my life and I just love it, I didn't had the luxury of trying both on my wrist, but I'd say this...
My Explorer 2 is the biggest watch I've bought (Including my Garmin 7S 42mm which is the same), and all the future watches will be smaller.
Funny thing is that for a number of years I've set my mind to this watch, and looked at other Rolex watches and decided I'm not a Rolex guy with a bunch of Rolex watches,
buuut... now, having the Explorer 2 it suddenly opens the door to take a look at maybe 2 other Rolex watches... it's just beautiful.
The gate has been opened and I became a watch enthousiast, possibly a Rolex enthousiast too.
make a new video with the 2021 explorer
Having a larger wrist I’m drawn to the 216570. I even like the black dial almost as much as the white dial. If there was a significant savings with the black dial, I’d grab it in a heart beat. GREAT video, Teddy!
Thanks my friend! I think the black dial 216570 is much more appealing than that of the 16570. The orange hand helps it pop a bit more.
Wholeheartedly agree. The polar 16570 is my favorite Rolex!
Bought a 216570 in 2011, when Rolex just switched from 16570, love it would never sell it.
I wouldn't either. Nice snag and thanks for watching!
Teddy: Theres a also Polar white option for the newer steel Datejust 41. Also a beautiful face. Grabbed one of those last year.
I bought both 16570 and 226570. One in black one in white. The 16570 is great for understated everyday wear without the bracelet (I put that on a Rubber B strap, original bracelet is not great when compared to modern ones), and the 226570 is surprisingly great to wear with the bracelet.
16570 is the way to go! All day every damn day. Great review as always Teddy!
Just picked up my 216570 polar :) verry happy with it looking great next to my SD43. Nice vids mate
Great video teddy. Next you should do a comparison between a Horology House Daytona and a real one. 😄
Enjoyed your video and analysis. This will probably be my first Rolex. The white dial and orange detail are stunning.
I love the milgauss it's so frickin cooolll
my dream polar explorer would be the 16570 with an orange GMT hand. I like the new iterations but don't think the polar dial works anywhere near as well. Looking forward to seeing what they do for the 50th anniversary next year
My preference is definitely 42mm
white case ,bar none, BEAUTIFUL.
Hi Teddy, a huge fan here with a question. Love your reviews, especially when you give specs.
Thanks for the review Teddy - 16570 is the pick in polar white - would go the same choice as you, proportions are better and love the more traditional vintage vibe
Love your video's. Well done!
I hate orange! I’d be fine with a 42 if it had red hands. This is why I own the 40
Great comparison.
216570 for me. Well done!
The black dial will gain more popularity when more people realize it has the phantom dial hands. The white dial looks nicer, but the black dial is the one you should invest in.
Edit: I'm talking about the 216570 of course. Also my very first Rolex I bought early January. First one of 2020 :D
5 digit polar, well done Teddy
Clarity is power - can't beat the readability of the 216570 - love it!
Awesome video: 2 great watches, a lot of detailed information and fantastic macros. Well done Teddy!
Love my 16570 Z serial, got as my first luxury watch for my birthday. So versatile and quiet but also an awesome sports watch for daily use!
Fell in love with the white Yachtmaster years ago...
I’m an explorer 1 guy. My daily watch is a 14270. The 16570 is lovely though. Much prefer the red
Terrific presentation indeed Teddy!!! If I had to choose my no.1 wishlist timepiece it is the "Rolex Red Sea-dweller" with date magnifier.
i bought a "swiss" only 16570 (1999) last nov in japan. its a solid "investment" / buy. It is going up, but some countries i feel are still undervaluing this watch. For exp 2. its either 1655 or 16570. the new one is too big (even though bigger watches are supposedly in fashion)
The 16570 polar white dial ticks all the boxes for me. The vintage proportion and reliable movement just does it.
Great as usual. What do you think of the newest model in black?
I have completed and rounded out my watch collection with the purchase of both the Explorer 214270 and the Explorer 2 16570. In the combination of these two watches, I have pretty much every single design element in Rolex watches. Oyster case, crown guards, screw down crown, cyclops eye, GMT hand, numerals, lollipop seconds hand, Mercedes hour hand, a black and a white face. Oh, also I get both a modern and a vintage bracelet! After the ownership of these two Rolexes, I don’t have a desire to buy another Rolex!
Great video! 👍🏻 it nailed the spot. Also, it would be great if you did a video about sub no date old vs new. Thanks.
Haha it was a photo we took. We can start shooting some for others to have.
How can you tell what year a 16570 is ? ive bought a 2007 but sure its early 2000's as i read in the mid 2000's they started putting ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX around the rim (rehaut) between the glass and face. Thanks
Sent my 16570 back for refurb. Got it back and so very good! The Polar is a classic. I just don’t need/want the large nautical gauge on my wrist…doesn’t fit comfortably under a long sleeve shirt/jacket.
16570 is classic 👏👏👍 considering getting one. Great video and content 👌 🔥
You recommend a 216570 for larger wrists or can you pull off wearing a 16570 with a large wrist that looks good? thx
