- The simplest recipe for making Jamaican rice and peas in a rice cooker. With rich flavors mimicking a traditional Jamaican rice and peas recipe, but foolproof for those of you who struggle with a soggy rice and peas.
This vegetarian rice and peas dish goes well with other Caribbean side dishes and is a classic accompaniment to jerk chicken.
You'll Need...
3 cups (rice cooker sized cup) brown par-boiled rice
1 cup coconut milk
1 scallion
1 tablespoon thyme (fresh)
1 cup red beans (from a can)
1/4 habanero or scotch bonnet pepper (diced)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon allspice
*water according to your rice cooker directions for cooking brown rice
* treat the one cup of red beans as rice, so adjust your water according to the rice cooker instructions

Thanks, this is perfect for tomorrows dinner.
You taught me how to make rice and peas the authentic way and I still haven’t grasped the concept because it comes out a little too wet. But with this method I think I’ll really be able to get a good pot of rice & peas 🤩
Yessssss... thank you
🙏🏽🙏🏽 I was scared to cook my rice & peas in my rice cooker. I’m so grateful it can be done this way. Lol
Respect for the video, glad you made this video.
I was thinking I want a rice cooker, now I know I need a rice cooker. Looks so good.
thank you my rice was great has always been a problem for me in the pot temp up and down thank you so much now everyone in my family loves when i make rice
Just tried it in my rice cooker... with basmati rice (it's what I had)...SUCCESS! Although it looked like white rice and peas, it tasted like traditional rice and peas. Thanks Chris!
excellent all the way thanks.
I like that you stated that it is sometimes made with different peas. I personally use gungo peas (pigeon peas) when making it
Very nice indeed; thanks, Chef.
Really great with chicken thighs sauteed and added later into the cooker on top the rice 'til ready to serve. Fair warning on the Hab.
Happy Sunday Chris!!
I will making this today with my Curry Beef with Potatoes!! Yumm!! #CaribbeanPot #Kajmerej
Best recipe Ive seen yet

Nice simple rice & beans dish and somehow it reminds me of the "sir mix a lot" song...;-)
There's a part in that song that goes...red beans and rice didn't miss her...lol

Dßvy
Y
"that's pure hell" lol. that was a funny line..
And it is lol
My rice came out mushy using this recipe so too much water. I look forward to trying it next time with less water. I’ll skip that extra water for the beans! Lol
Thanks for sharing, how much water did you use?
Hi, can i cook this in a regular pot ?
Looking good! thanks :0
I need a rice cooker, I am using a wok.
Nice one Chris.. Do you also put Saltmeat in it? I dont know what THE exact name for it is.. Kind of like pigtail..
Thank you for the recipe can you pls tell me which brand of rice are you using I found parboiled rice from uncle bens but it doesn't say brown rice thank you again..
I have the same rice cooker as you.
Another excellent dish. I was wondering if you can do a fish called ackee and salt fish? I think that's what it is called. My husband say only his grandma can make it :-)
what brand rice cooker do you use, thanks
Banana Porridge tutorial please....
Can you make steamed wontons? ( shirmp ) please :)
Which would you say it's the better method - the rice cooker or cooking on the stove ? I am thinking of buying one of these but I don't want it to alter the flavour X
Hi,can i make this in a regular pot?
Pure hell lol
Can we black beans for this?
I recently had butter cassava, cannot find a recipe. If you've come across this please share. Thank you. Meanwhile I'll keep looking.
Would this method work on a stove top
If only this was posted on Sunday...
Hi how much water should I use for Sella rice please?
Can I make this in a crock pot as well?? if so how much of the ingredients do I put in??
How do I get your book?
"Thats pure hell" omg that made me laugh
Maybe a dumb question but do you rinse the beans when you take them out of THE can?
I normally do, but in this case (rice cooker) I didn't as to have that richer 'red' color that rice and peas usually have.
love your work... i must say that when you put salt in the rice cooker, with the heat, it strips the surface off the inside of the bowl...add salt when its on the plate
Adding salt after changes the whole flavour profile of the rice and peas. Not a good idea.
When i'm cooking the rice and peas i only use one cup of water and one cup of rice , how much coconut milk should i use because a cup is too much it will be soggy. i'm going to get this till i get this right. Or should i add a little mor e water than a cup and less coconut milk i want it to come out so i can fluff it help a siset out
Could you please do a video on how to make mango chicken.
how much is this book in US dollars
Can I used channa instead of beans dem red beans burn me ras
Caribbeanpot, I read that adding salt and stirring the rice will cause the rice grain to "split". I would like to prevent the rice grain from "splitting", so how would I go about doing that? A household member of mine always cooks her rice and peas with the rice grain split, but she cooks using the stove top method, she fluffs the rice with a fork and constantly stirs it (she practically assaults the rice), and she also pours salt in the water or on the rice (I do not remember which one). She has a rice cooker, but she does not use it.
I never use salt in my rice. I don't like salty foods.
Chris, my 3 year old just said, "I just wanna jump in and eat it. Can I jump in and eat it?"
Going to try this but was wondering does it have to be par boiled rice or can I use basmati rice ?
use your fav rice.. just adjust the liquid according to the 'rice' and your ice cooker instructions
Any rice. Just use less water for basmati rice.
You said you used par- cooked rice. How long did you partially cook the rice before this video?
I think he might have meant the rice you can buy in a supermarket that is often labelled as 'quick cook', y'know? It's still dry and you can store in the cupboard etc. but it has been pre-cooked somewhat to make it quicker for you to cook in water at home. Somebody stop me if I'm wrong!
How long do u cook the rice for?
Every rice cooker is different, you should cook according to your cooker. So when it is done/looks done it probably is done.
What do suggest for those who dont start with parboiled rice? (I never knew that was a thing)
Did you figure this out at all? I have the same question :)
@@strider785 I found par boiled rice. This third attempt was my best. Before then it was a little mushy with the regular rice. I tried par boiling myself and there's a thin window for boiling it too much before it goes in the ricecooker.
Kandice H Thank you for the reply. I’m gonna buy me a rice cooker because I’m tired of pot bottom LOL. Hoping this is as good as the pot version!
@@strider785 wishing you the best ricecooker rice and peas. They are super cheap. The only rice I'll be making in a pot is quick cooking rice. I'm a rice cooker fan now 😂.
just to let folks know U can also bake perfect rice in a oven or toaster oven
and i'm using white rice
I'm terrible with cooking jamaican/west indian food, BUT can I make this without milk? (My parents would be ashamed :( )
Brother get a wooden spoon with that coated pot..
The only thing missing is some king fish and plantain to eat it with.
Why didn't you use all of the beans?
