I made this recipe for laundry soap and I’m only now running out of it six years later. And I still have the supplies from what I made it the first time to do two more batches. It works really well and is great for my sensitive skin.

Fun little story. My mom use to work at an apartment complex and one day she heard one of the maintenance guys freaking out because she had removed a built in microwave and left in on the brand new carpet over the weekend. Come Monday he realized that was a big no, no!! The microwave had leaked a bunch off oil from the over range grease filter. He knew he was in big trouble, they would need to replace the carpet again!! My mom told him not to say anything yet, she went home grabbed some zote and was able to completely remove the stain!! My moms coworker was so happy he picked her up and kissed her l the cheek!! Lol 😂. ZOTE IS AMAZING!!!!!

Lovely story - I'm in Canada and I don't think I can get Zote but will search for it - I'm very sensitive to smells - do you remember what Zote smells like - do you know if it has a strong scent - we do have Borax here but I find it abit strong in smell - thank you

Thank you Anna for watching and giving me some feed back. I really appreciate it. Have you made any detergent yet? If not, remember to incorporate the ingredients in the 5 gallon bucket by stirring daily, I strongly recommend you get an electrical mixer of some sort, stirring or whisking by hand is just way too hard.

Did you do 2-3 gallons hot water. Add two bars shredded bars of soap. Let it slow cook. Then add the 2 cups borax and 2 cups arm & hammer laundry washing soda. Let it cook down. Then put in a 5 gallon bucket. Add 1 gallon of hot water and mix. Then mix a couple times throughout the day. Then next day add 1 gallon of hot water and mix. And mix a couple times that day. Did you add another gallon of hot water the next day and mix more or did you stop adding hot water?

********Use whatever soap you want, however don't bash others for trying to help and share their experiences. ******
What were our great great grandparents and grands using before the chemical detergent? My grandmother made our soap from fried meat grease, lye, and water. Using the homemade soap, we didn't have acne problems, skin irritations, rashes none of those associated with over the counter soap, and detergents.
My grandmas Homemade liquid laundry Soap(we still use today-smells like clothes hung outside on the clothesline)
(Front or top load Machine-best value)
    Ingredients:
4 Cups - hot tap water
    1 Fels-Naptha soap bar*
1 -1/2 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda**
    1 Cup Borax
    Directions:
-Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.
-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax.
Stir well until all powder is dissolved.
Fill bucket to top with more hot water.
Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water.
Shake before each use. (will gel)
( I use old laundry detergent containers I get from the laundromat, I ask people for their jugs)
-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil, orange citrus, lemon.
-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.
-Top Load Machine- 1 Cup per load (Approx. 100 loads)
-Front Load Machines- 1 Cup per load (Approx. 450-500 loads)
*****use your own judgement my grandma just eyeballed the amount****
*Visit the Fels-Naptha website to find a store in your area that carries the product.
**Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com).
Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium bicarbonate.

It's funny to see comments of people talking about the soap suds. That isn't what gets our clothes clean. We are just accustomed to seeing so many suds so much foam that when something doesn't work the same way, we assume it's not working. What I'm saying I guess is that more suds does NOT equal a better washing detergent.

    • @tamielizabethallaway2413
      @tamielizabethallaway2413 6 лет назад +13

T J. No! They are asking about suds because suds wreck a washing machine! That's why shop bought washing powder does not lather! People are just making sure that by using this soap based recipe that it doesn't cause any long term damage to their machine! They don't WANT suds...they are checking to make sure there are NO excessive suds!

Soap was all they had, so that’s what they washed with. Salt per se wouldn’t do anything. Soda ash was extracted from ashes and enabled soap to be made from animal fats or plant oils. I don’t know when using lye for saponification became the norm however. Washing soda and borax were used to enable soap to be used in hard water. The DIY folks are proudly recreating 1600’s technology. Maybe more ancient than that.

🙂👍 Finally! I made this basic recipe several years ago, but I forgot the proper quantities of ingredients. I had previously tried making it using the most common recipes on the internet. But, like you, I preferred _NOT_ to have to deal with the inconvenience of storing 5, 7, or 10 gallons of extremely weak, diluted detergent in my laundry room. I also didn't want to have to add 4 to 6(or more) 4oz capfuls of detergent to each large load of laundry.
I prefer a recipe that contains more active ingredients and less water. There's a reason why discount laundry detergents cost only 1/3 the price of the top brands like Tide. It's because the cheaper detergents contain much more water and much less detergent.
It turns out that your recipe is almost identical to the one I was making, except that I used Dove bar soap instead of Fels Naptha or Zote. Some recipes give the option of substituting Ivory bar soap for Fels Naptha, but I don't like my clothes smelling like Ivory soap. I'd read that Fels Naptha has a warning label stating not to get it on your skin, which deterred me from using it, although that may be an unjustified overreaction.
👉 Important note: _Don't_ try adding Oxy Clean into your liquid detergent bottles. Oxy Clean is activated by water, which causes the oxygen and hydrogen in it's solution to change to gas, which causes the mixture to greatly expand, forcing the cap off the bottle, and continuously leaking detergent all over the place! It's ok to use Oxy Clean with your detergent, but _only_ add it to the washing machine while you're doing laundry.

No. Active ingredient is sodium percarbonate, an adduct of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water. H2O2 decomposes to oxygen and water.
That said, you are correct about not dissolving it prematurely in water.

@@tanookis_nookie2056 I know I laughed at that too! The color of your laundry soap has nothing to do with being a guy or not. Our soap is purple, my husband uses it.
Fels Naptha is good for poison ivy, oak & sumac. When I had bad poison, my dr told me to wash my body with it, and it dried up the poison immediately. I just wouldn't wash with it daily or put it on sensitive areas because it dries the skin. It is a laundry bar however, and that is what it is used for.
As for oxy. I had some Arm & Hammer detergent that had oxyclean in it, but I would not put actual oxyclean in my own soap mixture. Im not a chemist, but I don't think it would end well.

The recipe for making laundry detergent requires washing soda, and she kept saying baking soda. (I get it. Pretty awesome and simple video. I've been making my own bath & laundry soap for about 7 years now. I started after I had an accident that really spiraled my immune system out of control and I noticed that no matter what store bought soap I used, even baby soap, it irritated my skin. I use zote or the felsnaptha if I dont have my own left over bars from unsold products from my personal line. It just depends who is on sale. One day one brand will be $.98 and the other $2.12 and then they'll flip the prices....so I will go with the cheaper ones and buy them out on those. Anyways...your video is more directed than the verbal know how I got. Thank you for your time and I look forward to the next!

Hi, got here after viewing some other videos about alternative clothes washing technologies and felt like making a suggestion. Borax is a type of mild acid (boric acid), and washing soda is an alkaline. When you add the borax, you’re actually neutralizing the washing soda (leaving salt and carbon dioxide as byproducts)and reducing it’s effectiveness. That’s where all the bubbles are coming from when you mix them together with the soap water. I think you’ll get much better results using just washing soda with your soap, and probably about half the amount you are currently using in relation to soap.

I’ve been reading all the comments and I’m starting to laugh out loud at how many times I’ve read the comparison of the detergent to the weight of a dime and that it’s the same as washing in plain water. You seem to feel very strongly about the subject. Thanks for the laugh..... I kind of needed a good chuckle (I’m not being sarcastic For some reason I just really got a kick out of it) I never comment on RUclips but after reading it so many times I just had to leave a comment. I so love humans! with this fabulous diy detergent video and the slight irritation turned tickled zote pink at the insistence that it absolutely won’t work....no way no how.... no matter how many people commented that they used her recipe with great success. But honestly it does clean clothes at this concentration. When in doubt just whip a batch up and test for yourself. Moving right along I love the video! I’ve been searching for a good recipe that doesn’t involve me filling several 5 gallon buckets. That just seems ridiculous. I didn’t want to just do the math, reduce and hope for the best. So glad I finally found someone who posted a tried and true method. And I always appreciate a video that is to the point with good instructions! Ps frank, there’s no need for you to tell me it won’t work. I’ll just assume you still feel very strongly about it unless I hear otherwise. Have a fabulouso night everyone!!! (Just In case anyone else needed to know the name of the degreaser haha.)

I got it, the secret to keep it from separating. I melt the soaps in the pot on the stove as per instructions. Add hot water to the hot water in the bucket. I did hot tap water into the bucket and added the hot soup solution. My 5 gallon bucket did not melt. Then I stirred with the electric drill paint stirrer like every half hour to every hour for like a minute. Til I went to bed. Perfect. Filled my jugs and hasn't separated. 😀

lol, yes it is. I do it that way so I can store larger amounts in less space. I still have three half gallon jars which will give me about 4 1/2 gallons still. I made five gallons for each child for Christmas, so that was 25 gallons I made, lol. Theirs isn't concentrated though, I love it when they bring the bucket back and say "hey mom, I need more", lol.....this way I know I will see them often, lol.

Accidentally came across your channel when trying to remember on the egg float test if sinking was good or bad. Then saw your adorable bunnies 🐰. I had raised one litter of the californias one time. Husband and I went out to a place to buy rabbit meat. Rabbits were alive and when I realized what the guy was fixing to do, I couldn't take it and stopped him. Told him I still wanted the rabbit and a mate to go with it. So we had baby bunnies one year. So sweet and lots of fun for the kids. But they escaped our back yard except for the original male. He enjoyed hanging out with my cats too much.
Anyway, Love everything else your videos have to offer🤓

If you want to keep xenoestrogens out of your wash, make and use your own simple soap, use washing soda, and baking soda. I grate soap I made with either tallow or lard and lye (no scents whatsoever) and grate it into the wash. I add washing soda and a bit of baking soda. During the rinse cycle, I add a cup of white vinegar. If I can, I hang the laundry on a line. Otherwise, I hang it on dowel laundry rack. Scents, perfumes are not healthy. Sunshine dried laundry is also UV sterilized. Hope you follow this because your family will be healthy and free from chemical poisoning....something our ancestors enjoyed before corporations brainwashed us into believing we need to scent and soften our laundry. I was lucky to raise a child on well water (fluoride and chlorine free water) and supplemented our diet with iodine. Hope you take my advice...just want everyone to be healthy, able to pro-generate healthy and smart children, andto just wake up to what is happening to us behind our backs. God Bless the USA.

Somehow I doubt very much that manufactured soaps and detergents are in any way safer for us, Frank. Perhaps you should read a few more studies. I've read both sides of the fluoride debate. Extensively. There's a reason it's banned elsewhere but not the US. Maybe try reading some non-US based research, although that does usually require an ability to read other languages. MsBlushingrose doesn't seem 'unhinged' at all; she's merely stating what she does in case someone would like to replicate. Nice of her! (And it's not conspiracy 'theory' if it's correct. Just saying.) Too bad that chemistry degree from MIT didn't teach you how to also be nice. Maybe someday you'll realize that ability is worth a bit more than the paper you've got.

Steroidal hormones survive the soap making process. Pesticide residues too. If they’re in a cow’s fat, they end up in ‘natural’ soap. She says scents are not healthy. Look at all the essential oils included in these DIY recipes...many for their alleged health benefits.
She has a bizarre, unfounded belief that our ancestors were healthier. Look at childhood mortality and life expectancies. Unhinged? I’d definitely say yes.
Note that she says she uses washing soda and a bit of baking soda. That’s an indication she doesn’t know what she’s doing, and relies on advertising hype on the boxes, likely believing baking soda ‘kills odors’.

This video was very helpful for me! Every batch I've made has separated and I couldn't figure out why! I can't wait to make another batch this way!

So glad you enjoyed. The secret to not having separation is keeping it in the bucket several day and mixing it really good a few times a day. You really need to use an electrical mixer and mix it real good so the solutions "marry" with each other. Thank you for watching. Have a beautiful evening

leigh ryder you can also use vegetable glycerin to stop the water and soap separating instead of mixing it constantly over several days, it eliminates a lot of unnecessary work. It's inexpensive and you only need a few tablespoons

I added vegetable glycerin to my last soap batch and it still seperates. Next batch, I'm trying it this way

She answered earlier in a comment further down, I copied and pasted it here for you so you wouldn't have to search for it: I use Fabuloso Maximum clean, fresh scent. I buy it at family dollar for $3 (56 oz.). I would always put 1/4 cup in my husbands laundry and one day I just thought "why not put it in my detergent?" so I did. The detergent is a 1:1:1 ration. The fabuloso maximum clean is a ratio of 3, so three liquid cups. The one bottle make one double concentrated batch. I didn't add it to the initial process on the stove. Since it is liquid, I didn't need to break/ melt it down. So I added it on the second day before I bottled the final product. It is an all purpose cleaner, good for bathroom, stove and floors. So glad you found our channel. I hope this helps and you find success with it as I have.

A sweet friend and INCREDIBLE homemaker used to use Spic and Span added to her son's laundry ( mechanic ). Now, I have no idea how that would work in an HE machine, but it sure cleaned his coveralls perfectly.
