1 zote bar 2 cups borax 2 cups washing soda 60 drops essential oil 😁 I've made this twice and always have to come back to hunt the recipe because writing it down would make too much sense for me to do. 😂
I have one of those portable washing machines that you can put into an RV which also has a spinner in it. we only use cold water. with this work in my small washing machine and if so how much would I have to put in there a tablespoon level or could you give me a rough idea. ??? Thanks If I only made half of this recipe could I take the other half make it up without the liquid and put it in a 2-gallon white bucket for next time...
We made this detergent and are very happy with results. The one thing we've found is it works best if we dissolve it in about 1\2 cup of water & then put it in the washer. Thanks!
i've been using this combination of ingredients for years, but I use a box of Zote--already shaved and don't use water to make a jell. The only reason for that is the weight of the finished product----had a fractured shoulder healing, so kept the combination dry until filling the washer with water. This cleans soooo well! Thanks for sharing.
I found using boiling water breaks it down faster and to stir it a paint mixing attachment placed in my cordless drill saves my arm and time. Been making this for years and have saved big money. 👍
The zote soap is so fragrant. Great for stain treating and handwashing. It helps repel mosquitos too. Fels napths is great for poison ivy oil in your clothes.
This is great, i've been wanting to make my own detergent. The only thing is I just priced all the stuff and it's expensive here in Canada. It's 29 for borax, 26 for the arm and hammer, zote bar is $15.99 and just for the glass jar that is 1 gallon is over $51. This was on amazon in Canada, such a huge price difference between the two countries. It still might be worth it to make it, not only that knowing that it isn't full of nasty chemicals is worth it. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe :)
Oh my gosh I had no idea things were that expensive for you guys! I thought our prices were expensive here in the US. It is better than store bought detergents but the Zote bar has some added fragrance. If you decide you want to make it and want to cut out more chemicals you could try the Castile soap instead of Zote. Thanks so much for watching!
I bought all my ingredients in Canada. Yes it slight more expensive but I was able to buy the wash soda and the borex for under $10 each. The bar of soap Zote I bought on Amazon. But they sell other castel bar soap for cheaper at the store .
I've made this or similar. The 5 gallons I make is a concentrate. I cut 50/50 for my laundry bottle. I haven't made laundry detergent for 2 for 2.5 years. I still have 3/4 bucket full.
I'm so excited about this recipe! I love the smell of the Zote bar and already have the ingredients on hand. Your instructions were so clear and simple and I finally feel like I can do this! Also loving the tips in the comment section, thank you all!
I have used this recipe before, i saw it on tik tok but not the melted version. I am going to try this version dissolving the soap and ingredients in water to make a gel. I just finished making this detergent, I found it very easy. My first load is coming out of washer now. I did add Laundry beads from Gain this time because I like that scent. Only essential oils I had were Tea Tree. Thank you for the easy to follow recipe. Going on the dryer with fresh washed in homemade laundry soap😊😊😊
Brilliant! I've seen other videos where they added all that extra water I didn't have space to store, and I wondered if making a more concentrated version was possible. This looks so much less messy and space efficient! I love it.
I just finished making this and I've made a similar batch before and didn't have separation but today I don't know what I did different than usual because it just would not stay blended. So, I whipped out my stick blender I use for making soap and blended it while stirring at the same time and it finally came together. I was seriously befuddled at what I could have possibly done that would make it act funny like that. Maybe it was too hot. My water was 135 from the faucet? Whatever it was, that stick blender did the trick. Thankfully. ❤
I just made this to try out. I recommend using an immersion blender once its set to make sure its all incorporated and it creates a smooth consistency :)

Very nice recipe. Im improvising with irish spring soap( I have some). Borax. I dont having washing soda, however heating baking soda to 400f will convert it to washing soda(youtube), and I have that. Technically it should all work :) Wish me luck! Thankyou.

Very interesting washing detergent is very expensive here in the UK I might need to water mine down as in the UK washing machines are front the loading so you can't open the door. If I put it into 1liter bottles how much of your detergent to water do I need to get it to a pouring consistency?
It is very expensive here as well. I would start out with half a cup of the detergent in hot water to get it to a liquid for 1-liter bottles. If it is too thick, dilute it with more water; if it is too thin, add more detergent.
Thank you so much for this! I don't know why people want to store a heavy 5 gallon bucket somewhere and keep refilling a smaller container....and having to shake it up or stir it each time you use it. I want simple and efficient and this seems to be it. I use the powder version and like it but would like to have liquid at times too.
Interesting to see it actually done. Didn't you say you made it before without the water? I think to store it for me, just the dry ingredients would work. Is the recipe the same for the dry, just minus the water? Thank you.
Yes I did. You can do it the exact same way just minus the water. When I was using the powder version I would sometimes add baking soda to the mixture also.
Typically you would use this in place of a typical laundry detergent. Some people put their detergent in the washer and then add this homemade laundry soap to make it stronger. I wouldn't recommend mixing them when making this though.
Anyone have any idea how well it works with well water?I live rural the water is very hard. I dont want to make it and have things go sort of scummy. Thank you!!!!❤ This is a great idea!

You can but I have found that when I add oxi clean it doesn’t allow the soap to thicken. So I add it directly to the washer instead of adding it when making the soap.
You mentioned how dirty your husband's clothes get after working at the sawmill. Here is something you may want to consider: To get really dirty/greasy clothes clean, get a 5-gallon pickle bucket with a lid (preferably a lid with a rubber o-ring to it; you could probably ask a local deli if they have any empty pickle buckets with lids). Bring water to a boil and pour the water in the pickle bucket. Add a small amount of laundry detergent to the water. If you are doing a load of whites, you can add a small amount of bleach. Place your clothes in the pickle bucket, close/seal the lid and set aside. After 20 or so minutes, do your best to shake the pickle bucket, trying to get the water and the clothes thoroughly mixed. Just be careful when shaking or opening the bucket. The boiled water is under an incredible amount of pressure, so when you release the lid, don't be surprised at the amount of steam/hot water that may escape. Dump the water into a bathtub or a laundry sink and place the clothes in a washing machine WITHOUT any additional detergent or bleach, as you already used detergent/bleach earlier. Run the clothes on what will be basically an extended rinse cycle. The boiled water and the steam gets deep down into the pores of the clothes and really does a deep cleaning of your clothes. You will be amazed at the amount of dirt and grime that will pour out of the pickle bucket. This is the method I use to clean my socks, underwear, t-shirts, bed sheet and pillowcases, towels and dirty camping clothes. FYI: You should really only do this with natural fiber clothes, such as cottons.
Hi there! I made a version of this but not not put the borax & soap in at the sane time so it did not gel. I dont want to waste the mixture-do you think it will still work? Maybe 2 T instead of 1? Ugh.
I am adding up how much I pay for tide what I pay for I month in tide is 15 per month, I am going to make this !! I am tired of giving my hard earned money away and trying cut cost !
I can follow the process precisely and still have a problem with it separating sometimes. The soap fraction will collect at the top and water at the bottom.
So i just attempted this, but tried adding some oxiclean in with it. Whoa boy ......not sure if you cant add it in at all or if i just added too much much but i had a volcano going on 😂
I made this batch yesterday with boiling water. I made half a batch, because my container is smaller. It separated at the bottom and I have liquid at the bottom and the top is perfect. Any tips why? I’ve always done the dry method, so this is new to me. Please help!
The only time I have ever had an issue with mine separating was when I added oxi clean to it. Someone else said they had trouble with theirs separating also. I have been trying to make mine different ways to get it to separate but so far it hasn’t. Possibly try making it with just hot water and not boiling maybe.
OMG I had a leftover container looks exactly like yours, assumed it was 2 gallons, made it exactly as you showed, only to find out I actually have a 1 gallon container... Should I just use smaller portions or is this stuff too strong to use lmao I feel so dumb 😅😅😅
Thank you for the recipe ! And the statement that greasy and soil laden clothes Do Not get Clean in Cold Water as TIDE ! Continues to Advertise ! Take some greasy dishes and pots and pans and wash them in Cold Water with Tide and see how greasy they Remain !

the zote bar in the video looks a lot bigger than the bar i have do you know how many oz of zote you used? Also i used the fels-naptha zote 5oz bar

Does this work with HE washing machines? And how would you use it for front loaders where you can’t add water first?
I was just gonna ask this!
Soak it with warm water for 30 minutes and add it to the drum and load the clothes .
Can I add surf Excel detergent along with laundry detergent
Typically you would use this in place of a typical laundry detergent. Some people put their detergent in the washer and then add this homemade laundry soap to make it stronger. I wouldn't recommend mixing them when making this though.
How do you use it for HE Washers. Do you throw it in the drum. I have everything to make this now.
We have an HE washer that is a top loader. We put it inside the drum and let hot water run over it to start to dissolve it. Then add the clothes.
Do you have to use the PINK ZOTE?
No, you can use any kind.
Do you keep the soap container out on the counter in the laundry room or does it need refrigeration?
We keep it on the shelf in the laundry room.
Can you use dove soap? Sorry for asking but that’s some of the few soaps that doesn’t hurt my skin.
I wouldn’t recommend it. If you are looking for a more natural option you could try Dr Bronners.

Many people say that they are not meant to be used to clean your entire load of laundry.😮
That zote bars are not detergents some people us Down dishwashing detergent instead in there recipes.

I am going to dissolve the Borax and laundry baking soda in some hot water maybe 4 cups to 6 cups 🤔
Before I add the Down dishwashing liquid detergent.🤔
I will add the pure essential oils.🤔
Mix it really good in a 5 gallon bucket.🤔
Then I will separate it into different gallon containers like my empty white vinegar bottles.🤔
And just like my regular name brand laundry detergent Tide I am going to use only one tablespoon to 2 tablespoons per load.😍

Does it remove stains
I have found that it can remove fresh stains but older stains need to be stain treated.
Hi there! I made a version of this but not not put the borax & soap in at the sane time so it did not gel. I dont want to waste the mixture-do you think it will still work? Maybe 2 T instead of 1? Ugh.
Yes it will still work. I would recommend still using it the same.
the zote bar in the video looks a lot bigger than the bar i have do you know how many oz of zote you used? Also i used the fels-naptha zote 5oz bar
The bar I used was a 14 oz bar.
Nice!!!!
So is this good with Cold water,, thats all I use! Please let me know...
It will not dissolve in cold water. It has to be at least warm water to dissolve.
Is this safe for HE front load washers? Can't get Zote soap in Canada but I picked up several bars in Florida this past winter. Yey!
I have, and it worked really well!
I am adding up how much I pay for tide what I pay for I month in tide is 15 per month, I am going to make this !! I am tired of giving my hard earned money away and trying cut cost !
How much do you use, what is the size of that scoop you use. To me it looks like a tablespoon size, is that correct?
Yes I used 1 to 2 tablespoons depending on the load size and how dirty the clothes are.
Hello how big is your zote bar ???? New Subscriber
Excellently described. I'm going to have a go at making this. Thank you from Wales.
New Subscriber. Do You Have A Recipe For Fabric Softener? Thank You 🙂
Hi! 👋🏼 I'm sorry I don't. So far I haven't found any DIY fabric softeners that I actually like.
@@LewisAcresHomestead Thank You For Replying 🙂
Can I replace the borax with baking soda ?
You can, but you may need to use a little more soap each time because the baking soda is weaker than the borax.
How much of the Zote bar? The ones on Amazon look smaller than what you are using
The Zote bar im using in the video is a 14 ounce bar.
I can follow the process precisely and still have a problem with it separating sometimes. The soap fraction will collect at the top and water at the bottom.
I’ve never had this issue before. Is it stored somewhere where it sweats and causes condensation in the container?
How much water?
How many cups of water?
The recipe requires 2 gallons of water or 32 cups.
So i just attempted this, but tried adding some oxiclean in with it. Whoa boy ......not sure if you cant add it in at all or if i just added too much much but i had a volcano going on 😂
I wonder how does it smell
If you put essential oil in it, it will smell like the essential oil. If you put nothing in it then it smells like the Zote bar.
Why the borax? I grate the pink zote and i use only that in the washing machine and it works fine.
The borax helps with odor, helps whiten clothes and overall amplifies the cleaning power of whatever soap or detergent you're using.
@@LewisAcresHomestead thank you! I’ll try it again next time. I’m going to use what’s on top. Which is 80% lol
OMG I had a leftover container looks exactly like yours, assumed it was 2 gallons, made it exactly as you showed, only to find out I actually have a 1 gallon container... Should I just use smaller portions or is this stuff too strong to use lmao I feel so dumb 😅😅😅
That’s too funny! It’s all good, just use smaller portions!
Thank you for the recipe ! And the statement that greasy and soil laden clothes Do Not get Clean in Cold Water as TIDE ! Continues to Advertise ! Take some greasy dishes and pots and pans and wash them in Cold Water with Tide and see how greasy they Remain !
Has anyone tried this one in a front load.washer??
do you still use this?
That was interesting. Laundry detergent has gotten really expensive.
Yes it has!
