One thing to note about phase alignment issues: I don't think there is any simple way to perfectly phase align all of these sources due to the actual, non-flat phase response of each of them. The phase response of the amps/amp sims should be flat or at least linear, but the speakers/speaker sims are curves. It might be possible to set up an all pass filter(s) to get to something close, but panning the two sources is certainly faster and works well. Nerdy fun!
Cool setup! I’ve been contemplating a similar setup so it’s cool to see this broken down piece by piece. Didn’t know about that DISOXO either so glad you discussed that 👍
The ToneX pedal with a DI gives me great results for being primarily a producer. I get tons of options and can tweak sounds after tracking, which is always priority to me.
I take a similar, but waaay cheaper approach. I use an Orange terror stamp amp essentially as a preamp pedal with a 12AX7. I send the effects send out through my reverb/delay pedals and then into the mooer radar for power amp sim and IR. I also have an old Weber Headphone Tap box I had picked up cheap some time ago if I want to use a full amp through that to the mooer radar for IR. I think it works great, having the analog preamp in the Orange let’s overdrive pedals do what I like about them, but it’s also a great silent recording signal.
Love the setup! Have you had a chance to use the open source Neural Amp Modeler VST yet? Its essentially Tone X, but free. Would love to hear your thoughts on how it compares to ToneX for you. I'm using Helix Native and Neural Amp Modeler for live and recording these days
It's all cool as long as the options don't become paralyzing and take away from creative time. My process is a bit different and multiple tracks of guitar would just complicate editing. I record a scratch guitar track (which is sometimes the keeper) and build the song, then I decide if I need to change the sound of the guitar for a better mix, in which case I'll record with my pedal effects. I've just started using the Walrus ACS1 and I've been comparing its IR's with others and with blending in a bit of a plug-in cab IR.
Yeah, I think that’s been my hesitation to go recording DI guitar all the time (that it would slow me down) but it’s kinda had the opposite affect. I don’t worry as much about the initial time and get to tracking. Most of the time the “amp” tone is a keeper but I’ve got the DI for backup/creative purposes.
How are you connecting the Torpedo Captor to the iridium? Do you use the “thru” section of the Torpedo Captor? And do you use speaker cable or guitar cable?
I do something very similar. I love having an all-analog front end, and then using load/IR for a silent solution. Seriously, just swap your Captor for a Suhr RL, and you have my cabless rig. :)
Not particularly useful for me. They are twice as much as the regular captor. If it doesn’t leave the house your better off saving your money and using WoS in your DAW. It also gives you the ability to change the IR after the fact.
@@MichaelWWestbrook what I've been doing that gives you the best feel for the amp is using a 1X12 cab face down on a flat floor surface and using the lowest setting of attenuation in the Captor X. This, on my personal tests, gives the best response for any amp, even better fell than using my beloved Suhr Reactive Load.

Woo hoo! Thank you for the peek into your process and for taking our products along for this!

Geeking out on the tones! If I ever get my home studio set up, this is a great guide for me. Thanks, Michael!
Awesome!
I don’t need this level of flexibility right now, but this nerd rabbit hole is fun to watch. It’s also absolutely amazing what’s capable today.
Yeah, digital stuff keeps getting better and better!
For someone just getting started on guitar recording at home like me this was a super helpful video so clearly explained thank you!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful

You can also use the Tonex Plugin that comes free with the pedal and is even easier to make changes to tones after recording
There's a ton of useful information here, really liked the walkthrough and great explanation. Thanks, subscribed!

Michael would you consider putting up Tonex captures of your amps for sale? With your ear I know they would be great to have!
Yes, that’s in the works!
Sounds great!

Thanks for posting this - giving ideas seeing I just got Native Instruments Audio 2 + Sennheiser e609 but Protools is out of my price point right now.
Man I get it, I’m considering moving away from Pro tools. You could do this stuff in any DAW though!
@@MichaelWWestbrook What could you suggest would be a good entry DAW to start with??
SOLID!

No, I’m using the dry, line out. It uses a TRS. The thru would kill the Iridium and possibly the amp.
@@MichaelWWestbrook right, that makes sense. Thanks so much! Great video by the way. Super informative and great tones.
TOP!

Awesome! I’ve been curious to compare the Suhr with the Two Notes but I’m sure they are pretty similar.
Can you use the actual tone X pedal instead of the strymon pedal in your chain?
I could but haven’t messed with it that much in that way
How’s that ODS Amp? I’m thinking of building one.
I’ve been loving it. Doesn’t work for everything I do but it is super versatile and covers a lot of ground.
Nice, but gen the torpedo X, its Worth it

Man, what brand is It your board?
Can’t remember but I bought a flat board from one company and a shelf from another one. Both on Reverb!
