I wouldn’t recomend buying a tonex pedal used because without tonex max the pedal is kinda useless when you want to make captures the problem is that the tonex max license is gone once it’s activated and you can’t transfer it to another user the serial number only activates the pedal but the license for the Programms only come with the first activation I bought mine used and had to figure this out with the IK support
Are you sure about that? I thought the license could be transferred to another owner.. there was a couple of posts on Reddit about IK charging $25 for the transfer, which is crazy but still doable/cheaper vs buying new
@@maxziplock Yeah true that might be also possible but the next thing is that you have to find a trust worthy seller that is willing to go through this process with you and not just selling the pedal and keep his license
I recently bought a second hand Tonex pedal and the transfer of the license went pretty easy. I just emailed Ik I sent a picture of the paper with the old code and they emailed new codes to me and it all worked out well. More or less to my surprise 😊
thanks! been v curious about grabbing a tonex one. you mentioned that it sort of stands alone in this category, which is almost true because im curious about the boss ir-2 as well. i know there's a lot to access a mess of amps and such with tonex but i only need one sweet, clean, chimey, responsive amp. whoever does it better gets my.... well, no money because ill buy it used!
I've heard mixed thoughts on the IR-2 but have not tried it myself! Biggest difference being that the IR-2 is just for IRs whereas the Tonex is using captures of the entire amp + cabinet and from my comparison of using the helix with IRs vs. using the helix with Tonex for my amps, I feel like the response/feel is much better and more dynamic
Just what I was looking for! Great video! I have the original on my pedal board and I'm only using it as a stomp! So, yup, replacing it with the Tonex One. Can't justify keeping both and as mentioned, they are much cheaper used in case I change my mind in the future 😁
I have both, I use one on my Studio desktop and the other with my Laptop, the small one kind of blows compared to the full size pedal plus with the full size you get the full blown software. 👍
Just saw this video, but I really love the idea of these pedals. I just got a Helix LT, but I'm on the fence about keeping it. Don't get me wrong, it's hugely capable, but might really be overkill for me. I've never been a heavy effects guy. I tend to minimize my processing and only occasionally add things to it rather than the other way around. And I know that IK just released info that they're including Tonex FX as of a November 2024 update. That will be cool and might be all I really need. I'm kind of torn. I could really use other people's experience with the computer software as a help here. The Helix is cool because of the interface and good sounds. But I'd love to get a whole bank of real world amplifiers at my fingertips that I simply can't get a hold of or afford with just enough effects, but ease of use.
@@tommanseau6277 I think the Helix is great for a do it all type platform but if you don't need 60% of the features it may be overkill. I do have confirmation from IK MultiMedia that they'll be including updates for other FXs in their TONEX line soon and that may be all you need
Nice summary of the important points, thanks! I just entered the Tonex ecosystem with the Tonex One, and just tried using it as a programable drive pedal. I'm getting more background noise than expected when using the "Gold Centaur" preset. Are there power supply requirements to avoid excess noise?
To my knowledge, no there isn't additional power supply requirements that would help avoid excess noise. I've also used that Gold Centaur capture and didn't notice a ton of noise though
@@ZachBrobstMusic My iso PS works very well on my other drive pedals, but it causes a quite noticeable high-pitched digital whine on most of the Tonex drive captures. This goes away when I instead power it thru its USB-C port. YMMV...
I bought a Tonex pedal to use as a stand alone or in a Headrush pedal board inside the an F/X loop after the drive ,compressor and expression effects and then before modulation effects , I just pre ordered the Tonex one to put right before the delay on a regular stacked analog pedal board and see how that goes .maybe i'll have to put it somewhere else in the chain. If i use an amp I'll bypass the IRs or use it at as a reverb stomp rite near the delay pedal where it already is in the chain, all the other analog pedals will be before it. not to sophisto but hopefully effective . I can probably try controlling it via midi with the Headrush or a Digitech rack and pedal thing iI have from the past if I want to try it like you use it. to many toys Lol . this stuff will come in real handy , those nice and awesome tube amps are getting heavier in weight every year LOL
Its insane how many options exist now a days! I agree using the TONEX for the amp tones is perfect since they sound so amazing and then using the Headrush, Stomp, etc. for wet effects is amazing!
I’m considering the ToneX ONE to be my drive pedal Swiss Army knife in the studio . It’s limited to only storing 20 ? While recording to my DAW, can I have the USB-C connected so I can swap between 100 captures for example using the software ? And by 100 captures meaning I will capture my analog pedals using tonex capture to build the library .
Hi Zach, such a great to the point video that really cleared my mind up! I'm convinced i will have a better experience with the ToneX Pedal model, do you think IK Multimedia will bring out a new version (with maybe USB-C usage) of this pedal? Since they are shooting sky high in popularity now i think an updated version of the bigger pedal isn't that far away? What do you think? Thanks again for your content!
Hey there! Thank you! I wouldn't be surprised if TONEX came out with another version of the full size unit within the next year with the ability to run dual amps and possibly stereo outputs plus USB C. That would be amazing if they did that!
i've tried few famous multi effect but not tonex one or pedal, as for now I found its best to add good shimmer pedal and IR with xlr out as an upgrade to my vintage GT8 then it will sound great like new branded multi effect
2:25 … Wouldn’t you need the same adapter with the full-size ToneX pedal, though - if listening to those size (3.5mm) headphones … 🙃. You make it sound like they’re different in that respect …
TONEX ONE is nice! Guitar processors can make a big difference in sound depending on the CAB IR you use. actually there are many IR products on the market, but I think DYNAX IR has the best sound. As stated in their product description, DYNAX IR is really fast. When using IRs, the pick attack is sometimes delayed, and it is difficult to add picking nuances, but their IR prevents all of that. It's revolutionary!
I own a boss gt 1000 but looking to buy a tone x tp have different amps and use the boss gt 1000as just effects i just use distortion sound so I don't need a tone of Amps would make more sense me buy the tone x one buy the big version?
can you use these for live gigs like a helix all in one solution or something? I dont want to capture anything or use in a studio. Only live gigs or band practice. Lugging my amp to practice is getting heavy.
Is it possible to import new captures from external providers with tonex one and the tonex se software that comes with it? Or do you have to upgrade to the big software for a small pedal to add new captures?
The capture process actually happens within the app and through an audio interface or through their Capture device so you can't capture with the TONEX One just by itself
The ToneX Pedal (the original) needs an upgrade. Minimal, but useful dot matrix color screen (for itemizing) screen to keep the asthetic - Wifi, and BT for OTA upgrades, BT for iOS/Android, Mac/PC connectivity. Get a delay in there, too.
IK MultiMedia has been pretty on top of the game with releasing the TONEX and then the TONEX one. My gut tells me they have something in the works soon
just a shame tonex doesn't have any effects apart from reverb, because if I could have a delay that i can click on and off for solos without requiring another pedal that would be useful. as it is, it doesn't offer me any real functionality over my ampero 2
At around 4:50 ,You make it sound like you can edit the parameters of the Tonex Pedal from the desktop software live without copying the preset to desktop, tweaking it then sending it back to the Pedal. I don't think this is true.
Hopefully I'm not wrong here but you actually do have the ability to do this on the full size TONEX! Just have to move between live to interactive mode in the global menu. Of course, you still have to save once you make the edits but this is possible.
NEITHER. why? you still have to deal with IK and their hit and miss software. great tones, but a large number of buyers still can't connect to IK in the software. that's why there's around 100 used tonex pedals for sale on each of the equipment sites every day. frustration with the software and generally poor support from IK.
I definitely agree their software is confusing but I’ve not had any poor experiences yet. Bummer to hear that’s been other people’s experience though. Customer support and great software truly can make or break a product

I will keep my big box on the board, getting the small one later on as a backup and for practicing with an iphone/ipad.

great video Zach, lots of key points covered, thanks!
thank you!
I choose...both. (2) Tonex Ones, loading numerous pedals on each. --> Amps on the big brother Tonex.
Great choice!
mooer preamp and cab x2 are in the market as well as alternatives.
Obviously buy both make a big paddleboard with the big one and a miniature paddleboard with a small one by the way best guitar invention ever

Yes you can absolutely import new captures from external providers with the TONEX one!
key nuances?
Do either of these devices do amp captures or do you need other hardware? I haven't seen anyone address this in the many videos I have seen.
Great question! You need an audio interface or the TONEX Capture device and then can capture through the TONEX Software!
Do you need it if you have the Tonex plugin?
If you want it as a pedal on your board, yes. If you just want to use TONEX plugin for recording and already have the plugin, then no you do not!
You can't use Tone X one to capture tone . . .right?
The capture process actually happens within the app and through an audio interface or through their Capture device so you can't capture with the TONEX One just by itself
The physical pedal is the player, the software is the capture/player/librarian.
